Glancing back only three years 4 Opening one will find there have been great changes during our short stay here on “the Hilltop.” Opening 5 Halls in which we roamed from class to class learning, preparing for the future, now will be so far behind. By ourselves we set out to find the knowledge we have yet to learn. Opening As we stand before these doors, we remember when we wished this day would come. Now that the doors are opened and a new light shines through, we are afraid of what is to become of friends and precious memories. 8u;uado 01 Opening 11 Computers 14 Opening Library Opening 15 Faculty Academics 17 Mr. McLoota waits for the bell. 18 Faculty Academics Faculty Academics 19 Industrial Arts Mr. Sosinski 20 Faculty Academics Mr. Bolton Faculty Academics 21 Home Economics Mrs. Kebel 22 Faculty Acadcmics Chorus Faculty Academics 25 Spanish 26 Faculty Academics French Facully Academics 27 English Mr. Clawson Miss Chuba 28 Faculty Academics Mr. Puhala 30 Faculty Academics Physical Education 32 Faculty Academics Faculty Academics 33 Life in the fast lane. a o In School D e+entiofl % 210 34 Faculty Academics Faculty Academics 35 Mrs. Meredith ... a la Punjab! 36 Faculty Academics We’ve pot Culcha! Battling bad weather for away matches, the team was handicapped by shooting against teams who have fired competively for many seasons. Things look better for next year though, as ten of the twelve shooters are returning for competition. Mell Zelenski was the high scorer with 96 points out of a possible 100. She tied David Cornell for the highest cumulative average on the team. Richard Holbay was a close second with an 85 point average, just ahead of Rudy Haupt’s 84. Athletics 51 Westmont’s golf team ended their season with an undefeated 10 wins 0 losses record. They also won the Inter-County Golf Championship by defeating Indiana 12-7, Bedford 16-3, and shutting out Laurel Valley 19-0. Once again this season, the golfers annexed the Dr. Geroge Wheeling Trophy. Westmont seems to have permanent possession of the big silver bowl emblematic of local High School golf supremacy. Westy sent three players to district play as Todd Thiele paced all qualifiers with a 79. Dave Yerger shot 81 and Mike Price shot 83. They also had two senior representatives at States. Mike Price placed 9th and Diane Wiegman placed 35th. Girls finish with 13-3 mark Westmont's Girls’ Tennis Team finished the season with an impres- sive 13-3 record. Suffering a loss to Bishop Guilfoyle early in the sea- son, Westmont went on to win the rest of their matches until the last two. They then lost to Bishop McCort 3-4 and 1-6. This gave the Crushers first place in the league standings with Westmont a close second. Coach Moors sent several girls to Districts this year. Participating in singles were Sue Joy and Fredricke Rauno. Fredricke, an exchange stu- dent from West Germany, was un- defeated until she suffered an in- jury which forced her out of action. Also attending Districts were the doubles teams of Sue Joy, Jeanne Duncan and Jane Gleason, Kathy Davis. Although none of them ad- vanced further in competition, three of the District participants will return next year. They are hop- ing to regain the title next year with a strong team which will lose only three squad members. 54 Athletics Season Record Westmont Opponent 7 Central Cambria 0 7 Forest Hills 0 7 Vo-Tech 0 5 Hyndman 1 6 Johnstown 1 7 Central Cambria 0 7 Indiana 0 5 Hollidaysburg 2 3 Biship Guilfoyle 4 4 Hollidaysburg 3 6 Forest Hills 1 5 Vo-Tech 2 6 Johnstown 1 7 Indiana 0 3 Bishop McCort 4 1 Bishop McCort 6 Athletics 55 56 Athletics Football starts fast Athletics 57 VARSITY SCORES Westmont Opponent 20 Penn Cambria 0 16 Richland 8 8 Ligonier Valley 13 8 Forest Hills 26 22 Conemaugh Twp. 0 22 Central Cambria 0 12 Windber 27 8 Somerset 30 0 Bedford 45 Westmont’s Varsity Football team has a fairly suc- cessful season this year, finishing with a 4-5 record. Winning four of the first six games, the Scarlets hoped for a winning season, only to give up 102 points in their final three games to very tough com- petitors. This made the difference between a winning and a losing season for Westmont. Scott Mardis led the offense in rushing with 639 yards and an average of 5.3 yards per carry. Erik Goggin, quarterback, completed 19 passes for 174 yards for a 9.16 yard average. The defense held the opposition to 149 points and also scored three shut-outs. They had twelve fumble recoveries and five interceptions. Tony Camut led the team in indi- vidual tackles with a total of 44. Westmont is hoping that next year will be a more successful one. The squad members of the Class of 1981 were Mountain Conference Champs in 9th grade. Westy is hoping for an equally successful season. Season ends on sour note Row 1: S. Dorian, N. Patton, M. Coach Mintmier's team waited till the last game to show off their stuff, beating Ferndale 62-61 to take third place in the Ferndale Tournament. High scorer for that game was Karen Peterson with 16 points. This year’s team, which lacked height, will lose only two seniors. They are Andrea Paratore and Capt. Karen Peterson. “The Class of 81” will consist of returning letterwinners including last year’s leading scorer, Barb Salem and leading rebounder Karen Tanase. Also re- turning will be Sophomore Sue Brownlee, who was named to the All-Tourney team. 4 — 14 = Long Season 60 Athletics Westmont Season Record Opponent 23 North Star 52 38 Bishop McCort 73 41 Richland 75 39 Johnstown 42 42 Windber 64 38 Ligonier 36 49 Forest Hills 45 32 Indiana 77 45 Vo-Tech 56 31 North Star 46 39 Bishop McCort 71 30 Richland 64 42 Johnstown 31 47 Ligonier 37 37 Forest Hills 47 30 Windber 56 49 Vo-Tech 54 29 Indiana 65 Clockwise: A. They were Chris Henry at 105 lbs., Mike Chabon at 138 lbs., and Tim Budash at heavyweight. Chris was the only one able to advance to Regionals. There he pinned his man in 1:58 and defeated his next man 11-9. Then he lost his next two matches eliminating him from further competition. The teams that they defeated were beaten twice and the teams that defeated them won twice. Although they didn't have the kind of season that they wanted to have, this year’s squad was a very close group of girls who cared about each other and what was being done to make a better team. High spirited and enthusiastic they tried until the end of the game and at times came from behind to defeat a team that was leading by 8 or 9 points. The team was kind of like the little girl with a curl. “When we were good we were very, very, good. But when we were bad we were horrid.” Athletics 71 The boys' track team had a long season compiling a record of one win and five losses. The team was hurt by the lack of returning lettermen. This year's seniors were Gregg Horner, Gregg Kautz, Jim McCaffery, Dave Stumpo, and Brad Swanson. Junior letter winners were Chris Camut, Marcus Cunningham, A1 Ghantous, Dave Good, Ed Gregg, Dan Reitz, Rhomes Ritter. Sophomores Dave Long, Tim Papinchak, and Paul Zettek also lettered for the Hilltoppers. Westmont also qualified ten runners for Districts. Camut — 400 meter, Long — 3200 meter, Kautz — Papinchak, Cunningham, and Stumpo — 400 meter relay. Ghantous — 110 meter high hurdles, Gregg — 300 meter intermediate hurdles, and Good and Zettek in the high jump. One school record was broken this year, and one was tied. They finished with a record of 2-6. Coach Puhala attributed some of the losses to bad weather. Two of the postponed games were not rescheduled. The inclement weather also decreased the number of outdoor practices, in turn affected the Hilltopper's play. The two wins were recorded by pitch- ers Mike Molchany, a senior, and Fred Mulkey. Other seniors on the team were Jeff Bird, Jason Cwik, Bill Frick, Shawn Hartnett, Jack Prescott, and Dave Schultz. The underclass letter winners were Bruce Groves, Joe Kittka, Mike Litte- rine, Scott Mardis, and Fred Mulkey, and Dave Williams was the only sopho- more to letter. Next year should hopefully be a good one, with 13 men returning, and also a healthy Scott Mardis, things can only hope to improve. Athletics 77 The girls softball team had a losing season this year with a record of 3- 4. Keith Beckett, in his first year as coach, had only two seniors to work with. They were Shawnn Mo- ran, second base, and Andrea Para- tore, shortstop. Other letter winners were Laurie Chidester, Stacey Fol- som, Diane Gillis, Lydia Kohler. Leslie Maser, and Anna Shahade (all juniors), and sophomores Anita Kohler, Betsy Pudliner, and Nancy Romanow. Lydia Kohler was the teams only winning pitcher. She chalked up victories in all three games. Laurie Chidester led the team in batting with an average of .600. The girls also participated in the Johnstown Tournament at Roxbury. They played Laurel Valley and lost. All in all the team is looking for- ward to next year. With the loss of only two seniors, the team will be prepared for a better season next spring. The season started late because no coach had been hired. The team suffered by losing weeks of practice. Mr. Mintmier accepted the position and the team hit the courts. The loss of last year’s seniors, who composed the entire top five last season, left this year's team with one senior, Rick Ruhf. Juniors, Rick Dezelon and Scott Brownlee, complete the top three. John Penrod, an up and coming sophomore ranks fourth. The team's record this year was an understandable 4-7. Rick Ruhf and Rich Dezelon competed in district singles, while doubles teams Joy-Ruhf, Duncan-Penrod and Dezelon- Kerin attended district doubles. The team has a very good outlook for next year with all team members returning but senior Rick Ruhf. Athletics 81 82 Activities A. M. Westy D. Moyer. Dr. Strange. D. Eash. J. Bailey. K. Kapp, K. He is a teacher in the highest sense of the word. He diligently instructs classes in chemistry and biology, yet he is always available to those students who seek his counsel. He also devotes much of his ex- tracurricular time to the Westmont athletic program. As football, wres- tling and track coach, his under- standing, patient attitude has earned him the respect of the stu- dents. Therefore, because of his caring attitude, his unselfish dedication, and his contributions to the aca- demic and social aspects of our lives, we honor as Teacher of the Year 1979-1980: Mr. Milton E. Whether it was in sports, activities, academics, running around, partying or just being plain old lazy, we found special things about each other, as well as the rest of the world. 164 Closing We’ve discovered friendship and happiness, tears and frustration; we’ve laughed, cried, complained and tried to understand each other. Closing 185 Through it all we’ve gained a certain knowledge, not only that of math or English, but that of life. What will become of precious memories? 166 Closing They will never be forgotten because they were the building blocks of our young lives, they were our decisions, our fun and our friends. We were ourselves, part of others’ lives. They, in turn, were a part of our futures. Closing 167 In Memoriam The students and faculty of Westmont Hilltop High School were saddened at the untimely death of Mrs. Miriam Mangle during the past school year. Mrs. Mangle had been a well known figure in the high school office for many years. All of the future stu- dents of Westmont will be deprived of the privilege of seeing her pleasant smile and hearing her May I help you?” in her soft voice. We will miss her. 168 Closing Staff Scott Wyland Gwen Galloway — Editors Beth Dunn Troy Galloway Scott Rea James Reesman Dave Sigg Glaudia Straitiff Becky Wagner Credits the 1980 Phoenician Staff extends thanks to: The Administration Westmont Hilltop Board of Education Cover Studios Herff Jones Yearbooks Mr. C.
