In his health and gym classes, his words of wisdom frequently ap- pear in his speech. After a dismal start, the long distance harriers came into their own in the last three meets, racking up first, third and se- cond place finishes. In a sport in which low score wins, W esty exhibited an early season tendency to roll up some alarmingly high totals before settling down in the second Itatf of tne season. Although the team didn't end the season with a win- ning record, some fine individual performances highlighted the various meets. Coach Claycomb, and the team, were disappointed by the lack of support given the sport by Westmont spectators. Mr. Claycomb pointed out at one pep rally that a cross country meet requires only twenty minutes to run, yet only a handful of students stay to watch. The effect of a big, appreciative crowd on the performance of Red and Gray athletics is well known. If Westmonfs student body wants a more successful cross country team, the student body must do its share. 15 4M Pregame huddle Although it is always more fun to win, winning isn't the major objective of a .lunior Varsity team. funior Varsity football was developed to bridge the gap between the Junior High and the varsity squads. It is here that aspiring underclassmen get the additional training and experience necessary to produce winning var- sity squads for Westmont Hilltop High School in the future years. This year's squad recorded its only win over Somerset Area in a season abbreviated by the cancellation of the finale against Cone- maugh Valley. However, Coaches Lantz and Stramanak are confident that the 1971 var- sity will be much improved with the addition of the 1970 funior Varsity performers. Westmont Hilltop,s 1970 Football season was high- lighted by an upset victory and a heart-breaking defeat. Enroute to a 5-4- record, the Hilltoppers pinned the only loss on Richland by a 7-0 score. Local sports writers re- ferred to the Super Rams in pre-season writeups and predicted an undefeated season. The second game of the campaign ended all this as the Scarlet defense scored one of its two shutouts of the season and extended Westmonfs mastery over their rivals from the other hill. The Scarlet and Gray have not been beaten by the perenial gridiron powerhouse from Richland for seven years. The game against Mountain Conference Champions Windber Area was one of the most thrilling of the local grid season. Down 13-0 at half time, the Big Red Ma- Westmont Opponent Penn Cambria 25 7 chine fought back gamely, scoring twice after the rest period. After the second TD, scored on a 90 yrd return of a pass interception by Bob Kerr, the H illtoppers gam- bled on a two point conversion in an attempt to win. Al- though the attempt failed the fans applauded the win or lose spirit of the team. Again this year Westmont's strong defense, a trade- mark of Matsko coached teams, stood out by allowing only 89 points during the nine game card. A capable passer and receiving corps permitted the Big Red Machine to present a balanced offense, scoring nine times via the airlanes and 10 on the gound. The future looks bright as 18 experienced players will return for the 1971 season. GOLFERS RETAIN TITLES As far as Westmont Hilltop is concerned, the Wheeling Trophy has found a permanent home. The 1970 golf team returned the big silver bowl to our trophy case for the third consecutive year and the ninth time in twelve years. The Inter-County League and District V I champs must be consi- dered the prime contenders to repeat in 1971 since Pat Wolfe is the only senior in the top five. Juniors Dave Delozier, Jeff Hall, and Kim Kunkle and sophomore Joe 0'Donnell, along with Captain Wolfe took turns capturing medalist honors as they swept past eight opponents to run their undefeated string to 33 matches. During the past season only Ligonier, a 10-9 loser, was able to press Coach Sheldon Hunter's linksmen as they averaged 14.5 points per match. Playing the tough Sunnehanna course like they owned it, the 1970 golf team held their opponents to less than three points in twelve of their sixteen matches. This year the Pep Club aided in the sponsoring of the annual Homecoming by providing the decorating and cor- sages. Also, the club sponsored a school Toys for Tot's campaign to aid unfortunate children at Christmas. As al- ways, the Pep Club enthusiastically supported both the cheerleaders and majorettes in their respective contests. All in all, the club had a busy and successful year. A real live baby doll? x I Pep Club Initiation A Somerset Eagle Boy Cheerleaders 31 ,,,, Pre-game huddle , This year, the Phoenician gives you the basketball team from the eyes of one of its varsity players: The season may have seemed disappointing to the onlookersg but to the team it was a tremendous accomplishment. Success was not measured by the 9-13 record, but by the companionship and enjoyment felt by the team members. Also, this season was very ironic. Carnes were lost that could have been wong and games were won that should have been lost. We, of the team, all agreed that Mr. Balogh was not THE greatest basketball coach in the world, but he was the ONLY one we wanted to play for. This season may be remembered as a mediocre one, but not in the memories of the players. Barry goes for a lay-up Poetry in motion? A time to remember. heerleaders Cheerleaders prepare to host the Cheerleading Contest. In the words of Mrs. Meredith, their advisor, the cheer- leaders were a unique group of girls. This years squad was made up of seven seniors and three juniors. All of the senior members had years of experience prior to this season. Several of them, in fact, had been mem- bers of the winning team in 1970. A high point of the year was the hosting of the Annual Cheerleading Contest. For weeks, the cheerleaders and their helpers prepared for the big night, and when it arrived, it was a big success. Following the contest, the girls spent a memorable weekend in New York. After such a successful year, any improve- ment in the future might be difficult. LV. Cheerleaders: S. Goettlicher, L. Davey, A. Springer, P. Rullman, B. Dill, Mrs. Meredith, K. Mullen, J. The chapter won the Red Rose Award for their project and are eligible to compete in the State competition in January, 1972. The girls were very active this year by travel- ing to the State Farm Show, sponsoring a bake sale, and holding the February Birthday Dance. They also visited the Childrens' Home, the Scalp Level and Lutheran Old Age Homes, and col- lected for UNICEF, and the Arthritis Fund. Baseball With only three returning lettermen Westmonfs base- ball team still finished the season with a fairly successful re- cord of 6 wins and 4 losses. The returning lettermen, .lim Duray in center field, Dave Meehan as catcher, and Tim Ellenberger as pitcher were aided by veteran seniors, Bill Rostosky at first base, Ken Shorts at shortstop, and Rick Smith at third base. One of the highlights of the season was having Vo-Tech as a new opponent. Also, our team experienced an easy vic- tory when Conemaugh Valley was forced to forfeit their second gamedue to their teachers' strike. Possibly the best game of the season was Westmontls victory over their arch rival Johnstown by a score of 10 to 6. C 'mon Dave! Our Gang Ray Whips one in . . . Row 1: J. Herdman, I. Herdman, T. Track and Field lVestmont s track and field team, under new coach Mr. Stramanak and veteran Mr. Lantz, turned the corner during the 1971 season. The change in attitude of the team members was obvious to even the casual observer. As a result the future looks much brighter for the cindermen. Even though the scores were not impressive, the team showed steady improvement as the season progressed. Team victories require depth in the various events and this year's team exhibited this to a greater degree than other teams of recent years. A further bright spot was the emergence of underclassmen as point-getters. Next year's team should benefit greatly from this talent and experience. At the District VI meet, three of Westmont's track and field men, senior Don Oakley, junior Don Nokes, and sophomore Don Cowie qualified for participation in the PIAA State Class B Track and Field Meet at Penn State. Thus Westmont can boast of three boys who rank among the twenty-four best in the state in the shot put, two mile run and M mile. Dezelofn on the pole vault. The world, however, continued to revolve without much help from you. Years from now, will you remember what went on in the world while you frequented these halls, what you heard in the news each day, what current events you discussed in class, what moral and political issues influenced your family? Will you remember, for instance, that it was when you were a freshman, that assassins brutally murdered Senator Robert F. Ken- nedy and Martin Luther King, that the Chicago Seven disrupted the Democratic Convention, that Dr. Christian Barnard performed the very first heart transplant, that the Paris peace talks started? Will you remember, that when you were a sophomore, Apollo 13 set the first man on the moo-n, that America viewed a music phen- omenon called Woodstock, that Nixon became president and Ag- new, a household wo-rd, that Edward Kennedy's political life died at Chappaquidick, and that the ,lets won the Super Bowl? 146 Will you remember, that when you were a junior, that four stu- dents were lcilled at Kent State, that abortion became legal in many states, that an incident at a Vietnam village called My Lai 4 caused national controversy, that ecology became a national password, and that the Mets won the Series? And finally, will you remember, that when you were a senior, spending your last days in school that 18-year-olds were given the national voteg that Lt. Cally was tried for the deaths of 22 Vietna- meseg that a political group called Black Panthers wrought havoc with the police, that May Day brought a nationwide peace move- ment?
