VV: n ter -9 College includes so many experiences and emotions. It does for those of us on the staff, as well as for our students. Certainly Diane W' ' and I are ww I I O v e rw h e I m e d by the emotions of our first year here at Westmont. I The sadness of leaving Whitworth, the frustrations of moving, learning our way around Santa Barbara, locating a church home for our family, understanding the history, tradition and customs of the college, and trying to formulate the unique and distinctive min- istry that Westmont can provide in the years ahead -these are tasks that have taken time and energy. Yet there has also been the enjoyment of becoming friends with many students and staff, and sensing the bond and joy we can have together. Our first Spring Sing, the missions emphasis week, the Dean's List, Rosella Wilson retiring, the baccalaureate service with Arthur Lynip, and the final faculty-staff dinner on commencement night - I could go on and on: these times were enormously rewarding for us. I suppose the most obvious accomplishment of the year was the County approval of gradual growth to I 200 stu- dents. Yet the by-product of this, our increased contact with immediate neighbors, may be even more important. There has been some opportunity for me to discuss my philosophy of education with faculty and students, and yet it may be more significant that we have set a style of relationship between all of us at the college, faculty and student alike, in which we make decisions and work through normal and healthy disagreements with openness and respect. As the months go by we have become increasingly confident that this is the place we should be, for Westmont is people, and we are very thankful for the many people we have come to know and love here on campus this year. Since these proposi- tions are believed because their truth derives from God's authority, they are immediate obiects of faith, but not the ultimate obiect. The latter is God, for the propositions are about and from Him. In knowing Him by faith, the cognitive or knowing relation between us and Him consists in our believing His truths. Graduation is not so much an academic achievement as a profound personal loss. Four years at Westmont produces a dynamic of interpersonal relationships and friendships. Leaving this school creates a tender, painful sense of stunning emotion. After years of community building through common idenification with struggles, pain, laugther, singing, frustration, questioning, and learning, permanent parting is painful. Yet we leave with gratitude and hope. Praise be to God for the privilege to grow together, for every minute of companionship and communion. Praise be to Jesus for His promise- to gather His elect together in His nearing Kingdom. For now parting is such sweet sorrow, but then we shall again be together in the full light of His glory. Horizon A The temptation to intellectuolize one's faith in Jesus Christ is great at Westmont. Too often l found myself studying God rather than worshiping Him. In our aca- demic zeal ta understand Him it is easy to forget to quietly bow before God and acknowledge how truely awesome He is and how terribly ignorant we are. Sound doctrine and a good apologetics are essential to the Christian life, but they mean - little if our lives and attitudes do not reflect the love and grace of Jesus Christ which become a part of us only through prayer and meditation on! Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show for my Fellow Creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. - Emerson When you deal with human need, you never seem to have the satis- fying feeling that you are finished. That expresses a little of what l've felt throughout the year. There's always one more elderly per- son who needs a friend, one more lonely person who needs a lis- tening ear, many hungry mouths to feed, children who need a big brother or sister and so forth. We have only so much time alotted to us and must invest it in others the best we can. In working with Christian Concerns, we have at times thought big - even visionary. We have tried many things - some successful, some in which we have failed. Yet, unless we took risks and tried, we would have gone no where. As it is said, God does not call us to be successful, only obedient. As I look over the past year, I experienced a certain deep sense of ioy. I have been involved in other peoples' lives as they have touched me in special ways. Though we have been stretched to the limit we come ou having new endurance and a closer understand- ing of the nature of God. I remember when I became a Christian six years ago, I came to Christ saying, Lord you gave your life to me, the very least I can do is give my life to you. May God grant me and you a renewed understanding every day of what His Lordship means and may we follow him. - Dave Dolan Director of Christian Concerns Christian Concerns e started off as a disiointed group. No one knew more than at most one other person ere. God, what am I doing here? I don't really know these people, and I don't even naw if I agree with this type of evangelism. I don't know how long I'Il stick around . . . ' Yet we began going out to UCSB, iust a handful of people, to talk to students there. ow do you start talking to someone about Jesus, someone you've never seen before? I on't know, you iust do it. You're nervous at first, your voice sounds stilted, you stutter, ut you learn to l . Listen carfully to what these people have to say, Jon Berg told us, ecause they have a lot to teach you. Spring was different. We each had come to know eople at UCSB, which gave us opportunity to have dialogue in a whole new dimension. ime passed, and new relationships were woven with care, ioy, and lots of prayer. hen I think of the girls at USCB and Westmont that I've come to know, l'm confident at we have encouraged and helped build in each other something that will last eter- ally. I guess we all learned more about being a servant to each other like Christ is to us. - Beth Allyn Wagner INavigatorsl CHRISTIAN CONCERNS' DIRECTOR: BACK - Karen Jantzan ICC Secretaryl, Dru Gladney lMissions Emphasis Week -- MW and Missions Directorl, Ginny Rennard IMEWIQ Doug Hendrson IMEWJ, Dave Dolan ICC Directorl. Unfortunately, I iust can't seem to get myself there. I know l'm missing out. Chapel is a good program but the idea of making it required builds Resentmeht. Makes it hard to enrich when forced upon you. I hated WCSA chapels. lt offers outside views and teaching and stimula- tion defintely valuable to me. Temple has a tendency to latch on to two or three issues and harp on them all year appealing to guilt and emotion to the excess. That does not enrich - it repeals. I think we need to concentrate more on the quality of each chapel instead of the quantity. Realizing this, it would then be to our future benefit to make certain that our present actions are worthwhile. - Chalmer D. McClure 1 Quotes Gordon Q. gl ' .N a Phoen lt must now be made clear that eternal life is an immediate and very present experience. Our behavior betrays that fact that we often realize no such thing. We play along as if life were an Arbitrary ame, debating whether we are indeed living or if this is merely a rehearsal for life, forgetting this: each person at Westmont is as real as anyone we will ever meet. Were we to take God seriously at his word pardoned, we could pursue with abandon active, forceful prayer, the prayer of creativity. And creativity is magnified in suffering, not mere rehearsal, the Holy Spirit is the fountain of creative force and in the face of pain will be our comforter. - Dan Overgaard Phoenix Editor l made the mistake of believingjhat because Westmont studied the arts it was necessarily, interested in doing them. Tribe follows Tribe, Notion follows Nation like the waves of the sea. Your time of decay may be distant, but it will surely come for even the white man, whose God walked and talked to him as friend to friend, cannot be exempt from the com- mon clestiny. 8 . . From Conifer . . . I q , in the state lndex and Ads To achieve all that is possible, we must attempt the impossible - to be as much as we can be, we must dream of being more. Gale Baker Stanton I could probably express a lot of heavy concepts and ideas here on the Editor's page. For me, however, there is only one expression which would be appropriate. That expression is thank you to the other person who worked on this yearbook. To Patricia Furry l want to say thank you, not only for your long hours of work, but, thank you for your patience, your kindness and most importantly - your friendship. Patricia is a special person, which is what this book is about . . . special people ata special place called Westmont. . . . lt is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these over- whelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circum- spection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked with a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilization - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we ioke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriest must be a serious kind land it is, in fact, the merriest kindt which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously - no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. - C. S. Lewis Besides saying thanks to all the people who have come to mean Westmont to me, l would like to give my direct appreciation to Mike Taylor and the five beautiful people l live with. - Patricia Furry Editors' Page 1 ' 'L' 7.4.-L 'sm-f 'F S.. + V Q, Til ,.
