Well-prepared and committed faculty have come together on our campus to lead investigation in the areas of their individual expertise and to carry out this process in a personal and individual manner. To them it is of the utmost importance that the transaction include not only the passing on of accurate information as imperative as that is in itself, but that the relationship of factual data be worked out in the context of a world view that makes sense and includes as many of the realities of human existence as is possible. Nl- J ,VA .1 t '.' cyl , ' -, - '-fz.r,I..:'H A ' Economic pressures and policy controversies marked the '74-'75 academic year and taxed the energies of Westmont's administrators. After an eight-hour trustee conference, Dr. Hillegas announced in early November the reluctant decision to dismiss eleven full-time faculty members and to eliminate four academic majors in an attempt to keep the institution in the black. An emergency faculty caucus, headed by Dr. Paul Wilt, offered a counterproposal to the trustee's decision. The counterproposal was accepted in late Novembergaiad a fund-raisinfg telethon, manned by students and faculty alike, was overw e ming y success u . Also traumatic to the Westmont community was the resignation of Dr. George Brushaber, dean of faculty. After Brushaber's final decision, a dean selection committee, headed by Dr. Ronald Enroth, began interviewing candidates in a man-hunt which was to culminate in April with Dr. Hillegas' selection of Dr. Ernest Ettlich of Washington State University. . A five-member committee set upon the task of designing a proposed Fine Arts Major to be added to the current academidofferings. The program, which involves no extra funding but rather a reshuffling of existing professors and classes, was accepted after careful consideration by the academic council. Controversy erupted over administrative attempts to restrict the Horizon's circulation to on-campus. Dr. Hillegas felt that some parts of the paper might alienate prospective donors, and some students responded with the protest that the cocglege was attempting to sell to donors a Westmont that no longer existe . :AEE Upper Left-Hand Corner: Mr. Stanley Bjornson, Public Affairs, Above: Dr. Donaldj. Cal Oren i? The social and academic life ofthe Westmont community is deeply rooted in a common spiritual life in which prayer, Biblical exposition and worship are at the very core. For this reason, regular chapel attendance is an expectation which the college community places upon itself for the purpose of C11 directing our attention to the glory of God, 123 edifying our lives through an enlightened hearing of the Word of God, and C31 awakening our consciousness to the needs of the world. Spiritual Life Committee 'ik PAUL AND PETER How do you make people feel as though they are in their own living room? l've got to say it's the gift of the Holy Spirit. Ever since I asked jesus into my life l've had an amazing peace-something quite unlike l had ever known. I suppose that's what my audience feels too. Something else began to displace that fear, and that something was a feeling of freedom . . . Our new freedom has been a determining factor in the ongoing discovery of who we really are. Without the imposed preconceptions of who we ought to be, and free from the structures of the institutional mold, many of us have been realizing that we might not be the person whom we have thought we were for these many years. What a surprise it has been to discover a new self. Or perhaps we are merely affirming the individual we have been all along. flharlie Kennedy E ROPE '74 News from home comes with a kind of freshness because we are surrounded by a different life style. After using British, Egyptian, lordanian and Israeli currency, American coins begin to look strange and unfamiliar ... Someone hears that the Dodgers will be in the World Series. The word is passed around like an isolated message, as if it had been brought by courier over a long distance. Henry Kissinger is in Cairo, reports the Voice ofAmerica. The BBC on the 31 meter band reports that labor is winning the election in England. Greece will have its election on November 17th. And then a package of HORIZONS arrives, a month of Westmont campus experience capsuled as if it were for instant consumption. Dr. Eldad C. Vanderlip ,-f M.. .. 5 3' ,. I This year's Citadel is the product of an attempt to combine some of the methods of traditional yearbookery with a bit of playing around with layout and copy, it is an attempt to strike a balance between artistic license and responsible journalism lthough the two are not necessarily mutually-exclusivel. I hope that the inclusion of sundry statements from students and members of the faculty enhances the personality of the book, for it seems quite right to include both verbal and visual images of the persons who comprise the institution we call Westmont College. A publication unavoidably reflects a bit of the personality and perspective of its creator, and, therefore, the book cannot pretend to represent some sort of nebulous and perfectly balanced outlook on life here at Westmont. It is, admittedly, perspectival, but has been conceived by one who, most of the time, genuinely likes this place, this place made a space by the good people who inhabit it. sibility of advisorship of this year s At Left Willis Campbell Who d Voluminous high quality raphs for the staff. Paced by sophomore co-MVP and All-American Alfonso Guzman's twenty-two season goals, the Warriors rolled to a 12-5-6 year-end tally and a seventh place finish in the NAIA soccer tournament held November 27-30 in Florissant, Missouri. The injury bug struck quickly for the Warriors as junior fullback Dave Homer suffered a knee injury in the season-opening Far West Classic. Soph Dan Ribbens hairline-fractured his foot in Westmont's first roadtrip, and freshman Gary Ofner was lost midway through the season with torn knee ligaments. A strong core of veteran seniors pulled the Warriors through their trials, however. Not enough can be said about the performances of Ben Mshila from Kenya, team captain and co-MVP, Tim Quick, fullback, Lowell McCoy, fullback, Tamarat Afsaw, forward, Dave Rice, halfback. ln addition to solid play from sophs Robby Conn and Dave Tegenfeldt and junior goalie Pierre Belanger, the Warriors received invaluable support from freshmen Pat Velarde, Dan Chapman, Pete Dutton and john Sloway. The Warriors set a new school record for the most ties in one season at six and etched a new Westmont mark for shut-offs in one season at eight with a 3-0 tally over Claremont College for the District III title. Goalkeeper Belanger proved a tough obstacle to bypass for Warrior foes throughout the year and junior reserve goalie Bruce Beal, guarding the varsity cage for the first time ever in the district final, preserved the record-setting shut-out with a sensational driving block during a Claremont penalty kick. Mike Clark WOMEN'S g GLLEYB LL i ,4 W s l '. u ' ---4' -4.,f 1 Exuberance and a desire to compete characterized the 1974 Westmont women's volleyball team. In just their second season of intercollegiate competition, the Warriors claimed fourth place in their league while recording an overall 8-8 ledger. lnexperience showed up in the form of inconsistent play throughout the season, but the Warrior women, coached by Alice Henry and her assistants Steve Levoe and Roger Brown, succeeded in providing fans with an enjoyable brand of volleyball. The season's highlight was undoubtedly the Warrior's two-game-straight victory over league runner-up Biola in Westmont's gym. Senior Janice Kennedy provided the squad with stability and technical knowledge as well as sound play, and Kathy Devaney and layne Presnell supplied both hitting and blocking power on the front line. Lisa Mosbaugh, Shelley Bourland, Diana White, loan Pearson and Cindy VanderDussen all contributed heavily. Improvement cah be expected for the coming season, as the entire team except for Janice may return to play again. Mike Clark - . -Af Tf' Fa- c... A general lack of manpower characterized the cross country endeavor in the Fall as the Warriors failed to garner a team placing in the District meet and again manifested itself during track season in the Spring when Westmont managed only one team victory all season, failed to win the Warrior Relays for only the third time in its thirteen year history, and finished a meager eleventh in the District Ill championships. Mr. john Brennand, an amateur marathoner who lives here in Santa Barbara, assumed coaching responsibilities for the Warriors in the Fall while veteran coach lim Klein, away on Sabbatical leave in Europe the first semester, returned to manage the squad in the Spring. Clif Cole provided the Warriors with consistent strength during the year, establishing himself as the number one cross country runner in the fall and recording a 4:17.3 mile and 14:48 three mile during track season. Senior Dave Koss blazed the second fastest six mile race ever run by a Warrior in March at the Santa Barbara Relays with a 30:13.4, and Randy Thwing, sitting out most the cross country season with a knee injury, returned in the Spring to run a 4:15.8 mile and a 1:56.9 880. As far as the Warriors most outstanding athlete is concerned, discus thrower jim Howard undoubtably takes the honor. Transfering from Stanford this past year as a junior, the former high school all-American annihilated both the school record and the District Ill discus record with a toss of 179-2. Rated one of the top discus throwers in the NAIA and chosen Santa Barbara's top collegiate field athlete, Howard proved to be a formidable foe for Warrior opponents throughout the year with his familiar lightning-quick release and insatiable competitive spirit. Other Warriors strengths included senior Stanley Mosiany from Kenya in the half-mile,1:53.7, and Warren Shank in the hammer throw with a nationally-rated heave of 161-8. Dan Hall, Larry Cates, Steve Houseworth, and Len Hightower also made significant contributions to the squad in 1975. Mike Clark as A' '2 !i'5'f':'f2t--'Eff-'. You have just finished the construction, put on the finishing touches, and are ready to move in. Then, a few days before the actual move, you discover with shock that a considerable portion of your foundation has been removed. What do you do? If your name is Tine Hardeman and you are a missionary on furlow from the Philippines coaching your first college basketball team, you would most likely look the obstacle squarely in the eye, smile, and proceed undauntingly to build upon what is left of your foundation. And that is exactly what the 1955 Westmont grad twho happens to hold the school scoring recordl did during Westmont's 1974-5 basketball season. With ineligibility rulings removing star transfer guard Ron Handley a week before the season opener and forward Bill Boyd and reserve guard Buddy Rogers from the roster within the first two weeks of play, coach Hardeman watched months of preseason 1 preparation crumble before his very eyes after only six games. Making use of a horde of freshmen and relying heavily upon returnees Mark Miller and Roger Boyles and transfer Mike Macy, however, Hardeman led the Warriors to a 13-14 season tally. Miller, a talented all-district soph and potential all-American, led the squad at forward in scoring and rebounding taveraging respective 19.0 and 11.2 figuresi and capped the season with a 42 point effort against UCSB. Senior center Boyles averaged 13.1 points per game while junior Macy contributed 14.6. Freshman TJ. Hardeman performed well at guard, junior Scott Hilliker and soph Dave Kennard were both able forwards, and freshmen Dave Robichaud Kevin Barclay Rick Streelman and Gary Walm all provided substantial contributions to the team The return of Bill Boyd for the second half of the season added considerable quality to the squad s performance , ilr' T 7 j',c1,,,Q,-V-4.45-1 ' ' IETF fllzlgi.rAftg.i:a'E',4t1i3Q1.it:H'1 ' ' 1.1, :-w?FT 'fi'.e. ix ' 1 ' -ir '--uf 5.--sngf 1-1 1 -4-F.. WOMEN'S BASKETB LL t.':, Victories didn't exactly fall effortlessly into the hands of the women's basketball squad this year, but, given the dedication of this year's team, winning seasons cannot be too far off. Guided by the 110'Vn effort of sophomore Kathy Perkins, the Warriors recorded a 2-14 ledger this year in only their second season of intercollegiate competition. Besides leading the team in scoring, Perkins collected MVP honors at the end of the year and was named team captain. Margie Wise established herself as the Warrior's most improved player while freshman Holly Walker was elected the team's most inspirational player, The Warriors were coached this season by firs-year mentor Pam Perkins and assistant coach jeff Giese. Freshman Dana Ohanesian claimed the number-two spot on the team throughout the 1975 campaign while Robby Conn, Dan Cornelius, lack Grubbs, and Dave King alternated at the remaining four positions for much of the year and played major roles in Westmont's victories over LaVerne College, Biola, and Southern Cal College. The Warriors were coached byjon Hess. The Warrior women, enjoying their first year of intercollegiate tennis competition ever, served their way to a respectable 3-4 season record in 1975. Coached by Westmont Grad Pam Perkins, the Warriors recorded victories over Cal State Dominguez Hills, Scripps College, and Whittier College during the year behind the performance of most valuable player Kathy Evers, most inspirational Nita Engman, and most improved player Laura Manning. Margaret Begg, Beth Howard, Marybeth Lieber, and Karen Perkins all added to the squad's overall success in its first year of existence. Mike Clark 0 BASEBALL Second-year head coach Mike Simpson's Warrior baseball squad rolled to a 14-8 division ledger for third place in 1975 while accumulating a 16-22 overall record on a tough road schedule that included opponents such as USC, UCLA, Cal Poly SLO, and Pepperdine. The aggressive hitting of second-baseman Don Adams and the phenomenal basepath wizardry of centerfielder Tom Perkins highlighted Westmont's performance throughout the season. Adams earned all-district III NAIA team honors with a .346 average, and Perkins, in addition to hitting .301, recorded an awesome 39 steals in 39 attempts to obliterate the school's base-stealing record. Shortstop Mike Glenn led the team in RBI's with 31 as well as hitting .309 and stealing 22 bases. The team rewrote several school records during the season, most notably the marks for: most hits in one season t337J, most team runs 12091, most team runs in one game i18l, most double-plays in one season i49l. Bill Belamo paced the squad on the mound with an 11-7 win-loss ledger and a 2.25 ERA. Regular starters for the Warriors included Cliff Lindsey behind the plate, Mel Olds on first, Bobby Thompson on third and john Durnal and Pete Rennard in the field. Of coach Simpson's 20 man roster for 1975, only seniors Lindsey and Thompson will not return for action in 1976. Mike Clark 1 ni. 5 1- ,,- -ig,-1.53. . -i .5 .-TVQI.-'-' .'
