Dear Seniors, You graduates of 1959 are the first class to have your complete high school experience in the Campbell and Askew buildings. When you were Eighth Graders, these buildings had just been completed. In the fall of 1954, we were still enter- ing the campus on that little dirt road coming through the woods from How ell Mill Road. There was no big field house no Scott building no girls playing field no entrance from West Paces Ferry Road and of course no entrance from West Wes ley Road no music building and no Hut' Indeed you have seen the campus grow from two class room buildings emerging from mounds of red clay to an almost completely developed campus of 170 acres I am proud of this physical development but I mention it only because there is a subtle corre lation here During these same five years you de veloped so many of your potentialities and of course the true purposes of the school have found expression only in your development Rarely does a school have a class that shows as much leadership as has the class of 1959 -Xt all times you have been cooperative critical and loyal This attitude has resulted in your establish ing among other things our program of Senior Supervisors at Westminster I feel sure that this innovation is going to become one of the great contributions to the school You go to college now with our complete con hdence in your success there In the future we shall follow your progress from success to success with great pride Cordially DR PRESSLH DR WILLIAM I PRESSIY Pretzdefzf I' I' I' 1' I' I' 1' r r Mr Boa rd of Trustees Mrs Ixan Allen jr Mr H W Beers Ir Mrs Spencer Boyd Paul Brow n VC'elborn Cody Robert L Dodd W D Ellis Nfrs IamesN Frazer Dr Roland Frye Nfrs Thomas M Hines Mr G Arthur How ell Ir Mrs George Hott Mrs Iames C Malone I R McCain P D Miller Fritz Orr Iames Porter E D Smith Hal L Smith Monroe Sw illes Pollard Turman Xxflllllfll S W'oods Allison Williams 7 Dr. . MUSIC... With the arrival of Mr. Norman Blake and the completion of the new Music House, music has become a major interest at Westminster. For the first time we have a select mixed chorus to perform at special services. More singing in assemblies and required music classes have greatly stimulated interest. at i J CHORUS PRACTICES AT MUSIC HOUSE MR, NORMAN BLAKE, MUSIC DIRECTOR MEMBERS OF MIXED CHORUS SING AT CHRISTMAS SERVICE CHORUS: Alice Williams, Diana Currie, Paulefle Hillinger, Sally Wimer, Ginny Neeley, Susan Pye, Connie Gray, Cafherine Asfin, Marly Davis, Guery Morris, Judy Morgan, Chris Rasmussen, Mary Hunler, Judy Vickers, Caroline Wells, Bonnie Morgan, PaHy Wolfe, Marian Dewar, Joan Summers, Nancy Fowler, Susan Carswell, Vicki James, Kafie Pallon, Bonnie Bryanl, Carol Dudley, Befsy Seward, Donna Shermer, Lynda Bradbury, Lynn Thompson, Fran Milton, Suzanne Sellars, Laura Sauls, Renee Morris, Gay LeCraw, Mary Croom Whitfield, Cheryl Johnslon, Ricki Maurer, Liz Godbey, Wendy Bernhardl, Kay Kirkpatrick, Raleigh Mc- Donald, Lynne Rudder, Sally Wood, Ginger Brumby, Annelle Allyn, Elizabelh Mauldin, Margaret Rains, Jane Guganus, Susan Selman, Lucille Scoville, Brooks Perriman, Cornelia Hammond, Mary Gunn, Jody Collins, Benie Bruner, Linda Dunbar. Boys may take typing, government and sociology, and some foreign languages at the Girls School. Girls may take chemistry and physics at the Boy's School. LEADERS IN THE QUEST FOR KNOWLEDGE We present our faculty, whose members have guided, inspired, and challenged our quest for knowledge. Each teacher has in- stilled in us-sometimes against our will-a love of knowledge and an ideal of leadership. dignity, and culture which will stay with us always. Because of our teachers' patience and understanding, qualities which we too often take for granted without showing our ap- preciation, each of us this year has come a step farther toward realization of our school goal: To increase in wisdom, in statute, in favor with God and man. W M A 4-.4 nu-fwfr -2' ,n 523 4 - 514 U w fi ' M My rbi ATHLETICS, MARDI GRAS, AND MAGAZINES WERE FUN- AND ALSO ADDED TO THE HONORS WE WON. Although our voices were not always blended in melodious tones, we began our long list of honors our eighth grade year by winning our first rat-race-gain- ing first place for our song in Sing Song. Strangely enough, since that first year our voices have developed perennial laryn- gitis, we dropped to second place as fresh- men, third place as sophomores, and-let's just skip our junior year. But this fall we bounced back and redeemed ourselves by taking a first in our skillful skit. Mardi Gras! How we loved the most exciting event of the year, and how we have treasured visions of Pocahontas Cates, Dixie Belle johnson, Geisha Girl Smith, Kathryn of Troy, and Ethel of Oz. As sophomore Geisha Girls we made a dual triumph with our winning Tea House of the August Moon skit and our second place float. Our honors have ranked high in both athletics and scholarships. For three years we greedily accepted the Athletic Cup, gaining a partner for it, the Scholastic Cup, in '57 and '58. First in Magazine Sales in 1958 boosted our already vivacious ego and raised our spirits to a peak. Who will ever forget our early morning pep rallies at Cecil's, our co-operative efforts to get a holiday for every member of the class, and our friendly competition with the class of 1958. !TT RAT WEEK, PARTIES, FUN GALORE- IN ACTIVITIES WE ALWAYS SCORE. Having felt so lowly and meek in the presence of our long-remembered Big Sisters, this year we were greatly amazed and disillusioned to find that our long- awaited rats towered over us and seemingly forgot that they were to show reverence and respect for their elderly Senior Sisters. Parties of all descriptions were an im- portant aspect of our high school days- swimming parties at Soap Creek, spon- taneous trips to the ranger towerg and, best of all, dynamic days at Daytona, filled with memories of the Safari Motel, beach parties, and the Drive-In. In school activities we had royalty as well as loyalty. Dana reigned as queen of the jazz Weekend in our junior year, followed the next year by another little fireball, Homecoming Queen Linda Wal- lace. Getting stuck in the taffy sale of '58 we made little profit, but we did succeed in learning the art of shrewd salesmanship. Perhaps it was our lack of profit on the taffy venture that made the Great White Father decide the campus was an ideal place for functions such as the junior- Senior. Thus we were notified that we were privileged to use the gym for the big production. In spite of many compli- cations, the decoration committee finally transformed the gym into a fabulous flower garden, complete with portable fountain and floating camellias. BUSY TEACHING AND KEEPING US IN STEP- OUR FACULTY WE WILL NEVER FORGET. As our careers at Westminster end, we are able to look back on our teachers with admiration. At last we have come to appreciate the humor in Mrs. Gil- christ's fly swatters and monitor system, Miss Outler's massive library. Miss Pat- ton's love for May Day, Mademoiselles sick-tired, CIT., Mrs. Session's ex- periments with the alcoholic guinea pig, and Mrs. Herbert's Bible Class. Our faculty list could not be complete without a special recognition of Miss Ann Yates. Besides attending our spend-the- night parties, she undertook the big job of chaperoning seven of our Woolly Boogers on a grand tour of the West. Her friendship has meant much to us and will long be remembered. SPUTNIKS, NORMANS, AND THE SEVEN STEERS- THESE MEMORIES WILL LINGER THROUGH THE YEARS. The Hut was inaugurated on the cam- pus in our eighth grade year, and in two years its worth was recognized. Who will ever forget our daily fourth period treks to the hut when we were sophomores putting our feminine wiles to work on the Boys' Class of '57? Now we can look back and laugh at memories of a Westella when the record player Wouldn't work, a pre-dawn break- fast at the 7 Steers before motorcading to school, our over-joyed state on the day those rings finally came, paper sack masks and black costumes on Halloween, and the familiar blast of Lanoue's mighty charge . . THAT'S ALL-YOU NEED NO FURTHER SIGN TO SEE WHY WE'RE GREAT! Their enthusiasm rose to match that of any other class, as was shown by their noisy, gay participation in all school functions from football games to dances. Led by President Paula Reid, they have proven them- selves capable of great things, including fine showings in all competi- tive activities-winning second place in the Annual Subscription Drive, second place in Westella, and third place in Homecoming lapel contest. In every way this class has been far from insignificant. By 1965 the 'rats' of '59 are sure to develop into one of our best Senior classes. OUR ALMA MATER'S 'I GOAL TO FIND . . . just as our Alma Mater states, we strive to know our high ideals by living them. In many ways we try to put our spiritual training into practice. Each day at noon the entire student body bows in silent prayers of thanksgiving to God. The installation of Courtesy Week made us more aware of our manners, and a prize was awarded to the most courteous girl, Betty Bird, at the end of the week. Each year at Thanks- giving, we share our abundance by the filling of baskets with fruit and canned goods for others less privileged, and at Christmas we fill over 100 stock- ings for the Salvation Army. The Monitor System, instigated by Mrs. Gilchrist and the Student Council, keeps the halls quieter during the changing of classes and during lunch. Thus these traditions, and many others, exemplify the daily living of our ideals. AS MERRY SANTAS, WE FILL HUNDREDS SNIZYEMPTY STOCKINGS FOR THE SALVATION A . A PAUSE AT NOON FOR A WORD OF PRAYER. Under the leadership of Presi- dent Kate Kelley and Advisor Miss Cole, the first and most important project this fall was the drive for the Red Cross, the Community Chest, and the March of Dimes-this year a composite fund. The annual Thanksgiving baskets, made and nlled by each class, were both creative and copious, The party for the Atlanta Childs Home and the drive for Salvation Army Christmas stockings added to Christmas spirit of the whole school. Next came the Red Cross boxes filled with necessary and practical items for under privileged children all over the world. The knitting contest is almost a tradition, giving every girl a chance to take part in our VC estminster Community Chest. TALLULAH FALLS . . . Around in circles. The Tallulah Falls Circle has taken on various projects this year to promote interest in the Tallulah Falls School. The voluntary mem- bers worked under the leadership of Ginger Cates as President, Mrs. William Perryman as sponsor, and other officers and Com- mittee Heads. The chief aim this year was to raise enough money to furnish musical instruments for a much-longed-for band at the school through such projects as a Mock Faculty Show, a spring Carnival, and a Pilgrimage to the school. Tallulah Falls has a long history and definite need to till. We are proud to be part of an Atlanta tradition which links our school with another less fortunate. Every alternate Tues- day afternoon was the regular meeting time when pro- grams were given on other religions and their bearing on Christianity. There were also discussion and questions concerning details of our own religion. The clubs special project was assisting at Sheltering Arms, a day nursery for children of working parents, every Monday after- noon. In these ways the Bible Club both studied and sought to exemplify the teachings of Christ. Our victories have just begun! The junior Varsity basketball team, coached by Mr. Don Hubbard and managed by Nancy Porter. Cornelia Hammond. and .Imnne Heinz, has made an excellent record by winning the majority of their games. Their victorious record is due to many hours of practicing and spirited playing under the leadership of captains Mary Croom Nwhitfield and .Iudy Darby. AFTERNOON ATHLETICS . . Spor+s illus+ra+ed Characterized by green shorts and white sweat shirts, great masses could be seen daily migrating onto the new athletic field. onto the tennis courts, into both field houses and even into the basement. These were the underclassmen participating in the newly initiated Afternoon Athletic Program. A variety of sports were offered-hockey, soccer, basketball, tennis, archery. ballet. swimming, volleyball-and the desirability of this new institution was flavored still more by the addition of several young and male Columbia students to the coaching staff. Under the leader- ship of Mrs. Thornton and Miss Yates, the program has pro- gressed rapidly, and even mothers have entered into the spirit with several victories over their off-spring. HOCKEY HIGHLIGHT . . . Mofhers dedica+e new field Wfith everybody getting into the swing of things, mothers and daughters alike vie for ball in tense hockey game for the Mud Bowl championship. Our new field, which is slowly exchanging its red hues for greens, has greatly added to the general prestige and beauty of the campus and is certainly another excellent example of the rapid growth of the school. 11 , , . . .HE UNITES NOT IF YOU WIN OR LOSE BUT Basltelball C-Team is Organized HOW YOU PLAYED THE GAME. Scoring for the afternoon was provided by Bonneau Ansley with two touchdowns, Peyton Robinson with one, jim Fluker, one, and Bill Abbott, one. Although this was not a real test, the Wildcats looked good, and the fans were getting more and more enthusiastic. GEORGIA MILITARY ACADEMY In this the fourth game of the 1958 season, the Wildcat fans were again not disappointed, but they almost were. Tommy Rains' Big Toe' provided a one point margin which beat the Cadets, 7-6. G.M..-X. scored first, and at the half they led 6-0. After a little en- couragement from Coach Brake, the 'Cats returned to the field, took the opening kickoff, and marched 76 yards in 16 plays to score from the 2 yard line, with Ansley doing the honors. Then came the big moment, Tommy Rains kicked the ball right through the uprights, and the Wildcats had won their third ball game. A VG , . In this game, as with G.M.A., the Wildcats came from be- hind to win in the last quarter. The offensive horses were Bonneau ,- ff I Jr 's Ansley and Peyton Robinson, with Ansley gaining 171 yards in 17 carries. By this time the experts were beginning to see that the Wild- cats of Wfestminster were leading charmed lives. CHAMBLEE Tom Fraser Tackle This belief was not changed in the next clash with the tough Chamblee Bulldogs on the Chamblee Field. The cause looked hopeless after the Bulldogs had scored two quick touchdowns early in the game. But, never giving up, the 'Cats scored in the second quarter on a 25-yard pass from Baxter to Fluker, and the score at halftime was 12-7. When the Wildcats hit the field in the second half, it was hard to believe that they were the 531116 team. Julian Baxter took the kickoff all the way back on an 89 yard touchdown return. Rains converted for the P.A.T., and the score was 14-12. Chamblee regained the lead, however, in the third quarter leav- ing the score 18-14. HARRISON CHANGES TWO POINTS THROUGH FING- such as Chamblee, Headland, Avondale, and Athens, showing how good the 'Cats really were when they were on. Much of the success of the '59 round- ballers can be attributed to the two Sen- ior captains. jimmy Fluker, a regular for four years. climaxed his basketball career in creditable fashion. In several games, Fluker hit in the double figures and was a defensive standout all year long. His leadership and great spirit were big fac- tors in the success of the team. Sandy Hammer had his best year yet in basket- ball after recovering from an early season illness. He was the best rebounder on the team and in many games, tough to handle on offense. As a tribute to Sandy's com- petitive spirit and effort, he received the S. White Kenan Memorial Trophy at the end of the season. Harrison Jones The juniors, led by Bonneau Ansley and Harrison jones also carried a big load during the season. Speed Howell was a good rebounder and a defensive standout, and George McCarty and Bucky Askew both did much valuable substituting throughout the season. As was said before, the Sophomores were the big surprise that made the team. McKee Nunnally, who was voted the most valuable player of 1959 led this group of young stars. .lohn Thompson, who had played last year, returned and helped the team immensely. His best game of the year was at Sandy Springs, where he about shot this group completely off the floor. Moneybags Abbot also had a number of good nights. He consistently hit in the double figures and was high point man on many occasions. Pearce and Blackwood took turns substituting, however, both started a few games. Altogether the 'Cats of '59 did much better than had been expected of them. They had a winning season and did not suHer any humiliating defeats at all. Perhaps the most important feature of this year's team was their youth. Nine boys will return for next year's squad off of this year's team. This year's staff has worked hard to maintain the award-winning style of the past years with the Joint Section at the beginning of the book, followed by the Girls' and then the Boys' Sections. At the same time, several new improvements were initiated. The classes all now found in chronological order with the Seniors climaxing the series. The football and basketball sections have been slightly lengthened. Tommy Rains deserves much credit for a fine job as Editor. He was ably assisted by Chip Siegel. The many business aspects of the annual were excellently managed by Inman Allen with assistance from Tom Fraser. The job of photography was successfully handled by Larry Hess. Sandy Hammer served as art editor. Mr. Stephen Adams was the faculty advisor. Weller Rafchford, Sporfs Edifor Edilor Rains clamps down on Hess for dead line on phofography. Merrill, McCarty, and Stone were high on the Honor Roll. In football, Bell, Abbott, Robinson, Ter- rell, Stone, Young, Drake, and Pearson were valuable assets to the team. Pearce, Blackwood, Nunnally, Thompson, and Abbott would have been a winning combination in basketball by themselves. ln Other Sophomores participated in school clubs and functions such as the Key Club, W Club, Science Club, Mark Sheet Staff, and Chorus. For the third year Grilhn Bell was President of our class. He was assisted by V. P. Ricky Stone and Secy.-Treas., Ter- rell. On the Honor Council were Drake and Kirkland. McCarty and Thompson served on the Student Council. Bill Abboltf An+l'1ony Arnold Griffin Bell Bully Beneducl' Robed Blackwood Tully Blalock Joe Brill Bill Blum Jim Bremen Terry Bridges baseball Marett, Abbott, Pearce, and Thompson shared foul balls with Mr. Patton. REFLECTIONS Friends Romans and Heads we come here not to bury West mrnster but to build rt The good that students do often leaves wrth them but the evxl lives on afterwards Take for an example the time Dr Miller a past prmcrpal was ned to a tree desptte hrs determination to visit Herbert s Hectxc Halls Those were the days when some of the notables of our class htstory were stxll wrth us However Cthrs will be a final word for all Stllay Gann etc D they have passed rnto a more dngnrfied state of exnstence To be remembered in our Sub Freshman year of the maturrty of the campus culls 1S the astonrshrng group of indlvxduals to whrch the hlgher authoritles freely applred the title of teachers There was Bulldog sit down and identify Williams who was responslble for upsetting that twrsted and confused supposition of teacher equalxty by holdmg joe little man with the brg water gun Hahn out of the second story wmdow and threatenlng to drop htm Cprty he drdntb There was jolly Cholly Lloyd who kicked a hole rn his desk Wh1le upset at our nrncompoopery but has now found mtellectual refuge with the Granger Move ment Other than what has been mentioned our first year of high school was typically uneventful However one could always find 1 game of touch football bemg played in the drrveway with slrght dents left on the top of some poor unfortunate not know poor boy vrcttm of the Eighth Grade rmg leaders whose muffled gurgles and groans could be heard as he was pushed under a tor rent of water in the basement showers or stuffed into a smaller than he trash can Also forever imprinted on the Colonels scratch pad Cthat th1ng he draws pin ups on while tn a D C meetrngj rs the record of our escapade to the neighboring schools with results that we as a class first encountered the fierce wrath of an excrted admlnistratron And then we became Freshmen entering our first real year of hugh school life Dooley IS the only remaining student who ven tured onto the Varsity gridrron that year beg1nn1ng the Class of 59 s illustrrous football fame We were honorable students that year Having lost Doc I grant Miller we maugurated the first Be Kind to Teacher Week The first one we expressed our appreciation for was Dupree jordan who is now a newspaper tycoon sponsoring stu dent cruises around the world Also memorable from that year was George Goober Graham pentathalon champion of 1898 who was jostled by the mad onslaughts of the 7nd period against the reststrng forces of the lst period competently led by jack Candler This boy unfortunately had adopted the graduate and get marrred plan and as a result he was jerked from the ranks of A C s by the little lady On the subject of first loves we will always remember the rnfluence of Indra on our class This was when B111 W and Bozo found their one and only true love Also promnnent rn those days was Lassie and C Y and Mxghty Clem, now of lesser fame because of Peyton who seemed to snow all but be snowed by none However thats only Clems side of the story In September of 1956 we became honorable Sophomores And we were all honorable That was when many of us lirst got to know Coach Brake who has an uncanny way of expressing him self to the students That fall was uneventful as far as gr1d1ron v1ctor1es were concerned but much was learned that alded us on the football field tn later years In the athlenc world at West mmster a few boys began to dtstrngutsh themselves Stanley and Rains became soccer stalwarts while Fluker and Hammer hit the hard wood court The Freckled Rat Klng Walter and the Fluge establrshed their names with Diamond Jrm s nine rn the spring This was the year of some of our greatest trxumphs As we reached srxteen one by one certain boys enjoyed an rmmense popularity until their humble followrng got thetr own cars Hull of Darlington and Daytona fame began hrs career by defeating the fast and Fury est and by leavmg four door sedans in the dust Easy Ed Fincher also began a famous career as a race drlver Big lm Hug it Strrblmg who now knows more about cameras than Mr Kodak while Baxter and Gunby realized the true values of FoMoCo Although the Sophomore Slump found many of us still slumplng by Spring Hol1days our now mobile student body left for Daytona We all finally made lf through the tenth grade looking forward to a greater amount of power the follow ing year Vfe did however succeed rn extending our heartrest approval of the smrlnng Snake He was better known as Earle book on the back stde Barron jazzbo also left after our Soph Englrsh class to go instruct prelimrnary tactics in Mad love making at Kentucky Much to our sorrow Wild B111 Austm the friend of all left the fold Thrs was the year that the class of 59 established their un touched record as men of the world The Rat began emerging as an unrivaled king while such notables as Hammer Mullin and Tiger Alexander started on the royal road to romance The beginning of school as juniors presented a perplexing problem Certainly were we all honorable students but those who usrted the beautiful shores of Lake Rutledge 1n late August began to doubt not only thelr mtellxgence but also their existence . y , Z h . , , ,
