M 'Q ,A L ' V 2 And yet, just as we grow older in years and find we must build new character, we find also that as our school grows in size we must build new class- rooms. It is with warm pride that we have watched the framework go up, but it is not without sorrowg for we know that these are buildings which are no part of our own memories-but they hold a very real place in our dreams. May the future bless these buildings so that they may represent the same quali- ties our old buildings have because of the people who shall pass through their doors. It . -qv--www-sv vt-vw ' I Buildings must be constructed on secure foundations, they must be erected with a principle in mind, and they must possess the qualities of beauty and proportion-even so must lives be built. There are many requisites for build- ing lives, but the most important is the influence of people. Our lives will follow your blueprints, Miss Pharrg and so we have chosen to dedicate our annual, the Napfoniana '53, to you. They go to the forest for palm or pine, the stuff for the humbler homesg The mountain gives up its valued gifts for the stately spires and domes, But whether they work with marble or sod, The builder is hand in hand with God. 6 DEDIICATIION FOREWORD . . . . And so we have chosen Building as our theme this year. We are indeed erecting new buildings, but we should like to think too that we are building in character, in leadership, in ability, and in spiritual developmentg for these qualities have always been a very real part of our school and our lives. We should like to keep before us the ideal upon which Naps was built and on which the new Westminster is founded. MARY LOUISE COFER Editor Why build there cities glorious if man unbuilded goer? In min we build the world unlerr the builder alfa groan. 8 ADNUINIISTRATJIUN amd FACULTY When we mean to build, ' 1 We first survey the plot, rhen draw the model, And when we see the figure of the house, Then 9 we must rare the cost of the erection. ': b I WESTMINSTER SCHOOL POR BOYS '-T'L?'-' i POREWORD Three things are to be looked for in a building: that it stand on the rightispotg that it be securely foundedg and that it successfully executed. The boys' editorial board feels this quotation applies to our school lifeg ,therefore it has been chosen for our theme. , Westminster rightly puts first things first. Belief in basic Christianity keeps the stu- dent on the right place spiritually because Christian life at Westminsterhis thorough. Daily devotional in classes, Bible courses in each grade, a religious emphasis week-all 'these show Westminster is built on the right spot. A secure foundation is realized through careful instruction and thorough study habits. The faculty feels that adequate college preparation isgbased on day by day application to the tasks of scholarship at hand. In mastering each new demand the student will also develop a sense of responsibility necessary to a good foundation. - In order to execute successfully the development of the student's character, three main phases are followed. First, the student has the ability to think for himself. Next, West- minster has activities that encourage responsible relaxation. Thirdz Westminster's athletic program encourages both team spirit and individual accomplishment in the realm of sports. A 5 ' Our theme for the Westminster Boys' School successfully summarizes the program followed for the development of the student's character. 64 , v-+1-v--rv 1--------- -- v- -- if --f-vw, ,J Y .Y , , T Yi A ' -rw -ff kv THE WESTMINSTER SCHOOL FOR BOYS FACULTY MR. First, the Council, though in effect less than a year, has achieved that position that allows the students to take examinations and quizzes without proctoring. The second reason is the fact that the Council is an organization made up completely of students who are chosen by the student body. There is at least one member of the faculty present at each business meeting and hearing, but they serve only in an advisory capacity. This advisor is either Mr. S. M. Williams or Dr. W. L. Pressly. The above use of the word hearing is not in the strictest sense. The purpose of the Council is not primarily to inflict punishment on a student for a misstep, but to let him see and understand his mistake. When the meeting is over the Coun- cil has a prayer with the boy and, in the future, tries to help him to be a better student. The full success of the Honor System depends not only on the members of the Council, but on every single student in the school. The system has no value without the full co- operation of everyone. But students have realized the privilege of having an Honor System, and this tradition will continue to be one of the things of which Westminster is most proud. 69 THE SCHOOL PAPER AND THE ANNUAL DURING THE YEAR THE BOYS MADE THE TWO MIDDLE PAGES OF THE WESTMINSTER TATTLER Seated, left lo right: Duncan, Allen, Davis, Bugg, Matthews .... Westminster 14 Darlington Westminster O McCallie . Westminster 20 G. M. A. Westminsters first football season was 1 real suc cess when the newness of the underttking is con sidered. The record of three wins and four defeats represents much hard work by Head Coach jim Pat- ton and his assistant, jim Marlowe, while each mem- ber of the team showed marked improvement as the Fall progressed. Vernon Broyles and Tommy Bates led the offensive and defensive backs. Dave Ison developed as a break- away runner and led the scoring. Leading the linemen in all around play were Bing Owens, Ray Turpin, Rooker, and Bill Bugg. Linemen: Front: Rainey, Ford, Sams. Second row: Henderson, Rains, Davis. BASKETBALL XXfestminster had a very successful season in its first year of competition, The record, a losing one, cannot sl1ow the improvement made by each member of tl1e team during the season. Coach Wrigl1t brought the team along very well by heavily stressing the fundamentals of tl1e game. Victories over McCallie and Darlington showed that West- minister will be a factor to be reckoned with in the Mid-South in a few years. Tommy Bates was outstanding in his excellent play, particularly in rebounding and scoring. His point total of 240 for the season was the teams highest. Those following the games will remember well tl1e set shooting and ball handling of Charlie Hunt and Harry Thompson, Alfred Thompson, Charles Fuller, Ivan Allen, and Stevie Stephenson all developed rapidly, And not to be forgotten was the spot help given by McCullough, McCalley, Strickler, and Bugg. Victories were registered over Darlington although Wesminster dropped close ones to McCallie, Baylor, and Georgia Baptist. Coach Wright molded a T-formation built around the running and passing of quarter- 1' back Richard Hffll. The offensive load was shared by backs McGaughy, Sibley, and Davis. In the line Hopkins, Healey, and Prewitt were outstanding on both offense and defense. Kneeling: Shepherd, J. Hull, Prewitt, McGaughy, Davis .... Those out for the team had first to be drilled in the fundamentals by Coach Patton before they could start working together as a unit. The losing record bears this out, but it cannot measure the progress made by each indi- vidual player. ,,, ..4..... . The basic ideals will always be the same-they are unsurpassable, but we are fully aware of the fact that we are growing and changing. This year, we have added a boy's sectiong next year this addition will probably assume an even more prominent place. Perhaps, in coming years, the name of the annual will be changed to a more suitable one for the new schools. Throughout the year, in all seasons, almost every sport is offered not only for experi- enced girls but also for beginners as well. They have certainly added to our school life something which rewards not only in ath- letics but also in a more co-operative school spirit, These girls who have helped Miss Mynatt and Miss l.ane in organizing the athletic program, deserve a great deal of credit for their careful planning and leader- ship in carrying out a successful sports sea- son.
