These and other extra curricular activities have no concrete won and lost column, but those participating in them have the greater reward of having served the school in worthwhile work. The singing at YVestminster has been outstanding this year, and we wish to extend our thanks for the class of 553 to Mr. Griffin and Mr. Crandell for their contribution to our year. Mr. Lamont and the Dramatic Association gave us a professional job with The Man Who Came To Dinner. We will laugh long and loud in the future as we look back upon our year's show. The boy who overlooks the chance to hit that typewriter, sing a little flat. organize a dance weekend. or contribute to a serious interest like the Discussion Group or the John Hay Society. has missed the best fun in school. Ford, Metcalf fManagerl, Mr. Kennedy fCoachl Westminster Hoeke 1953 Remarkable above all else this year was the cooperation between the different hockey teams in their fight against a common foe, the weather. The rinks were maintained only through continuous labor of everyone from the top man on the first squad to the last man on the third squad plus the efforts of Conrad Metcalf and Tom Scheetz at all times of day and night. The game records, however, showed the consequences of the limited practice time. The firsts, under their coach, Mr. Kennedy, came out with a 2 win. 2 tie. and 4 loss record, while the seconds and thirds, both coached by Mr. Montgomery with the aid of Norm Fitch, a first teamer injured early in the season. had 2 wins, 1 tie, and 3 losses and 1 win 1 loss records respectively. One of the high lights of the season came for the firsts in their victorious game with South Kent when goalie Greg Neal, who is Captain- elect for '54, made 53 saves. Another high point of the season came when lineman Tim Clark and the defense held the league winning Taft team to one goal after penalties had taken two members of the team off the ice. Hopkins Grammar found the tankmen from Williamis Hill too strong and returned to New Haven under the burden of a one sided defeat. 42-22. The meet showed Coach Clough a hole or two in his team and helped him prepare for the oncoming Canterbury meet. One of the most exciting meets in Westminster swimming history pro- vided a heartbreaking one point loss for the home team. Canterbury won by a few feet in the final relay to bring home a win in spite of the record breaking performances in the individual medley by Bill Childs and the 100 yard breaststroke by Franz Spurny. Childs' time was l:23.2 and Spurny's was 1:O7.2. In the next two meets the Black and Cold swimmers sank the Deerfield Junior Varsity and Avon Old Farms by lopsided scores. Childs and Spurny broke their own records unofiicially in the Deerfield meetg and Hincks. Brown, Johnson. The First Tennis Team The Old Prosv of the '52 Tennis Team left many holes by their graduation, and the weather allowed the team to play only six of the ten scheduled matches. Bill Childs, Tim Brown, Captain Tim Towell, Mel Johnson, ,lim Hunt and John Tunney filled the one-six positions on the team respectively. Sam Lovejoy, player-manager, and Artie Pratt made the team complete as fill-in doubles partners. Of the six matches that were completed the tennis team won but two. Berkshire and the Trinity Freshman were the two defeated foes, 7-2 and 8-1 respectively. Defeat came at the hands of Choate 9-0, Kent 7-2, Hotchkiss 5-4, and Loomis 5-4. The Taft match was started twice, but each time rain interfered. The match went into the books as unfinished even though the Westminster team was leading 3-2. The long trip to Deerheld proved to be a waste of time. Again rain came down with Deerfield leading 3-1. By far the best played match of the season was with the Trinity Fresh- men. On that day everyone was on his game . Had our team shown this kind of ability during the entire season, another victorious season would have been ours. One thing the team had this year was depth. Anyone on the team was capable of beating any other one at one time or another, and they frequently did, to the anguish of Mr. Gow, their coach. One important thing the team got from the season was experience. With Jonathan Tunney and Bill Childs as the base for next year, the team should be progressively stronger. f59 'llfg Q0 K -ef' in 1 X N. 1, 1 NP X 'kv- Th S d Ifirsl Roux, Loft to Right: llouk, Stratford, Brumlnler, R e Morgan, Nickerson, Jones, Taylor. The Track Team The Westminster Track Team returned this year in a depleted although not unhopeful state. Messrs. Clough and Griffin combined their resources in order to ready a rather inexperienced team for its first encounter of the year against Canterbury. A powerful Canterbury visiting team failed to subdue the spirited Westminster cinder men, for the final tally was 52-52. While the fleet- footed Canterburians won all but one foot race, the weight men collected a majority of points in the field events. Jamie Greenleaf was Westminster's soloist in the running, while Captain Ray Croolce, ,loel Brightman, and .lim Draper captured the field events. The team next journeyed to Hopkins where they weren't quiet so suc- cessful. Sherman Durfee took the only first by winning the mile in the moderate time of 5:22.6. Pepper of Hopkins easily won the shotput with a put of 55 feet and a discus throw with a toss of 134 feet. Continued on Page '14 f61 621 rw! Un the following Wednesday Sawyer pitched well only to be downed 4--2 at home but the Miller-Sawyer duet again downed Salisbury 2-0 at the end of the week. At Canterbury the contest was a slug- fest on a wet slippery field, and Westminster was on the wrong end of a 14- to 9 score. With Kingswood here, the Sawyer-Miller duet bested an evenly matched Kingswood squad 6-5. On May 9th, Father,s Wleekend, the large crowd inspired the team to fight back from a 10-1 deficit with an eight run 3th only to lose again 10 to 9. ln the next three games South Kent, Canterbury, and Pomfret beat the Hill-toppers. Fine 1-0 pitching by Bart Miller was seen on the losing Canterbury contest. The Taft game found us at least able to get into the run column in spite of the loss 12-5. Closing Continued on Page 74 N.
