The first game was with Gunnery, and in a splitrseeond heartbreaker, we lost zo-1.1. In spite of tlte loss, the opposition gained a minus total of yards on running plays, and did not score one hrst down. The weakness in this ease was pass defense. One bad break was followed by another of much more serious conse- quences, as the school was foreed to adjourn because of a polio epidemic. XVhen the team assembled a few weeks later, we renewed practice without 'l'ommy llunneman, one of our better baekheld men. In the only other game, tlte black and gold trampled a very spirited but lighter South Kent eleven by tlte score of .10-13. In both games, Captain Claude and Vlll'Cflg'Cl' showed up well on the line, and Curt Alvord starred in the baek held. .Xt the football bantluet. eighteen won letters: Captain Claude was awarded the Lynch Trophy, for tlte greatest contribution to the team, and Curtis lf. .Xlvord earried away the Tackling Cup. TENNIS THIS YEAR Mr. Gow's tennis group had a fairly successful season. Art Benington, as captain, played a very steady number one, but was pushed hard as the spring progressed by the overpowering game of John Tapley. Tap seemed to be uncanny at driving long hard balls to the baseline corners. These two, both of whom are only Hfth formers, united to play the first doubles. Fred Risley and Jeb Howard held the three and four positions, respectively, and also constituted the second doubles team. Harry Sedgwick and Drew Friedman vied for the fifth and sixth spots, with Drew having a slight edge. The third doubles team was made up of Trefzger and Griggs, the latter also playing a number of singles matches. N.R. .ff ff - ,.,.. . ,Q . ' .AK -' - ' . TRACK 'l'ms YIQAR, A1f'1'1eR a lapse of several years, lVestminster had a few boys working out on the track during the spring. The group was in charge of Mr. Graves, who was ably assisted by John Rigby. It was not planned to have outside competition for the group, but the season ended with a Spartan- Athenian meet in which the track squad as well as other members of the school participated. The squad had many capable performers and it is hoped that this form of sport may take an increasing part in the x'VCSllHlI1SlCI' sports picture. w ,xus wg-,, six ug H lx Q1 1- 1 , , A 1 lu A 1 1 1 X , ,, , ' 1 ff .' f5z f - ., gf gl '. SPARTAN-ATHENIAN COMPETITION IT WAS FELT last fall that interest i11 Spartan-Athenian competition in the school should be revived. In order to do this it was decided to revise the scoring system and to make tl1e scholastic marking periods the unit in the Spartan-Athenian competition. The score which each Club had made during a marking period would be announced at the close of the period. Points would be awarded for a different list of achievements during each period. Scholarship was brought into the picture for the first time, and boys on Superus or Summus for the marking period scored one point each for their club. Other items in the scoring during the various periods were leader- ship in school activities, participation in first outside athletic competition of a sport season, receiving a letter in a Hrst team sport, and winning a Spartan-Athenian athletic contest. The winning club for each marking period had the honor of having its banner displayed at the dining room entrance, and the privilege of shaking hands with Mr. and Mrs. Milliken each evening after dinner before the members of the other club. Although the competition has at times been very close, the Athenians have been vic- torious in every marking period this year. Although the Athenians have won their share of athletic contests, the fact that more Athenians than Spartans rank high in their studies has frequently been the determining factor in the scoring. The totals for each marking period are as follows: Period Athenian Spartan ' 1 26 17 2 22 20 3 44 31 4 31 21 5 40 28 6 55 42 7 25 20 8 79 43 Austrian as Athenian captain and Calvert as Spartan captain have done a good job of organizing tl1eir clubs for athletic competition. In the fall, senior and junior football games were played. The end of the winter term saw junior and senior competition in basketball and hockey, a swimming meet with senior and junior divisions, and a ski meet. The close of the spring term featured both senior and junior baseball games, a track meet with two divisions, and a tennis meet for the older boys. Competition was keen in all these contests. In looking forward to another year of competition, we hope that some changes will be made to improve and enliven the competitive spirit. We feel that more effort should be made to differentiate Spartans from Athenians, that additional awards might be used, and that scholastic achievement might play a slightly less prominent part in the scoring. CURT ALVORD To dear old Curt, so gentle and tame, Breaking bones is part of a game. But please do not mistake the tone, The bones he breaks are not his own. But underneath, his heart is goldg Hc's like a child whose toys are oldg In angry moments, meaning no harm, He knocks you down, and breaks your arm. And then as sorry as can be, He offers an apology, But just for fun he can't restrain From poking the spot, to test the pain. And then to make the whole thing ducky, He'll show you how you got off lucky, Yes, I can thank my guiding stars, Comparing mine to Hotch's scars. JEB HOWARD Xllidget goes for the outdoor life, Winters hard and sharp as a knife, Always drinks from a rusty dipper, Takes his shower as cold as a kipper. Widget's a boy who shoots from the hip, Locks your hand in an iron grip, Likes to hght his way from the gutter, Dotes on the smell of rancid butter. Widget sneers at the loveliest ladies, Swears he'd send them all to Hades, Rough and tough and plenty sparky: That, of course, is all malarky. JOHN RIGBY Riding out of the middle-west, With a fiery and determined zest, Rigby left us all impressed, With seven sizes more in his vest Than there were ever in his chest, But stuffing filled up all the rest. Laughing so we shed a tear At this robust cavalier, Nonetheless, we lent an ear To wild tales of our frontier. And yet this western Lochinvar Can strum a tune on his guitarg But, if you think, you'1l wonder often, If all that hair will fit in his coflin. Or did I mean to say salomiP I fear there's something wrong, so please, Let's compromise on bread and cheese. BOB SANDERSON Sandy is the type of boy We'll miss upon the morrow, He fills his teammates' hearts with joy, And South Kent foes with sorrow. And so my friends it's great to see That robes of glory clad himg There stands a rock, a solid tree, We're glad his parents had him. DANNY MASELLI Should auld Maselli be forgot, And never brought to mind: The old Maselli jugger-naut, That Bloomfield gave mankind. Ye flowery banks of bloomy-field, How from ye bowels and belly, Could ye friends of Scotland yield The powerful Dan Maselli. FREDDY PHILIPS Whenever on his tail he sits, It doesn't bother brawny Fritz: Not e'en a tack makes him call quits. That part's so cushioned, I maintain, Without the slightest show of pain He bounces to his feet again. There's something sweet about dear Ed, I think he calls into my head A friendly canine quadruped, But, of course, a thorough-bred. But out upon the lield of play, With lightning blows he saves the dayg He blocks and hits, he raves and rants, As though a bee were in his pants. PETER CALVERT New Jersey's nearest to his heart, At least so saith our Peter, For that is where he got his start, But so did the mosquiter. New Jersey's swell he's apt to say, With fire in his eyes: Its merry towns are very gay, And full of buzzing flies. So Pete will say: Give bugs a snub, You always wallop where they're not, And if they are, aye, there's the rub, The nasty creatures make a spot . TOMMY JOHNSON Now when it comes to electric trains, Our Tommy swears he has the brains With Parky and Peter looking on, He scattered the pieces hither and yon Now don't you fretg leave all to meg I'll have it running perfectly! And with a very worried look He turned to the direction book. Later by hours with feelings strained All had been tried, but nothing gained Tommy said with cunning stealth: C.an't we play at thomething elth P HOTEL BOND HARTFORD'S FINEST DANCING NIGHTLY WILLARD B. And Toby's mind toward business tends, For he sells food to Imus friends, Dreaming the while of car and drum, Of Sam's old girl, and chewing gum. GENE TREFZGER Some of usdream of reaching stars, And some a million dollars, Of expensive cars, and big cigars, And shirts with silken collars. But Trefzger's dream is to implore, Not cars, nor silken trusses, He'd like to trample from his score Those horrible B plusses. And then I think he'd add: P.S. --- A larger set of muscles, In order to get beaten less By Junior House in tussles. PETER CRAWFORD Westminster holds the limelightg In Ethel Walker fame, Cause Peter knows them all by sight, And most, they say, by name. And at the year's most jolly party, With Walker Girls abounding, Why, Peter's feeling hail and hearty And his technique's astounding. And here's where I would like to say Though Franky does the singing, It's Peter, Peter, come what may, That keeps the phone a'ringing. His rivals say they lost their hold, When Peter came in tux, But now his secret can be told He'd washed his things in lux. J HALL BROTHERS, INC. Ush is suave, and won't give a hootg He's the lad in the pin-stripe suit, He'll not admit in a month of Mondays He's dreaming dreams of choc-late sundaes. HARRY SEDGWICK Poor old Harry, he's not very tall, So its odd to me, that one so small, Could be so very much on the ball. Football pads build shoulders squareg Visitors scream, are they really there P Then we say Of course, Of course, That's the famous Harry-Horse . When the ladies flock to see His greatness, later, at the tea, And praise his stature as tremendous, He shyly answers, Yes, stupendous . LARRY KERNAN Larry, Larry, quite contrary, How do your conquests grow? If you would marry, do not tarry, The ladies think you're slow. In fact you may die solitary Unless you start to go. - And that for you'd be very, very- Well-lonely, don't you know. ABE CLAUDE As we sit at the banquet quiet And ruminate the evening's diet, We know that this like all good things, Alike for commoners and kings, Has come at last to reach its end And we must part now, friend from friend. There's but one more whom we applaud With all our hearts-our Captain, Claude H.ere's to you, leader of the team. We hold you high in our esteem. We're proud that you should bear our shield, Both on and off the playing field. g , 2 ,L , v 1 , 'S 5 R ' I .
