Aiding him were: Richard Grave. 'junior Prefectf' Robert Thomson, james Slimmon, john Forrest. and james Warren. Having been at xxfsoninster for six years, Bob Russell has always been prominent in his class, acting as its leader for the last three years and Baseball Captain this past year, Dick Grave ends four years consisting of activities including participation in three first team sports for the past two years and the place of Hockey Captain in the most recent season, liob Thomson concludes three years at Westminster with positions including Editor-in-Chief of the News, Chairman of the Dance Committee, and 1945 Tennis Captain. james Slimmon, another six year man, was an integral part of this year's football team. while l-'orrest and Warren have been leading workers in the News and members of the Glee Club. lt can be said that the present board of Prefects succeeded in its leader- ship of school life and in furthering cooperation between the Faculty and the boys in this. their last year of life at Westminster. s if. fa. Slimmon, jewett, Forrest. THE YEAR BOOK Wartime conditions have allowed the XYICAR Book staff to produce a larger and a better year book than was published in the previous two years. It has now greatly increased its number of pictures and articles. The delayed pub- lication of the YEAR llooiq was because of the staffs desire to have a complete account of the school year. so that it was necessary to postpone publication until after commencement. The organization of the YIQAR Book staff has been as simple and expedient as possible. .Xll officers were dispensed with. and under the able direction of Mr. Bourn the business and literary groups were coordinated into a unit to produce this YEAR lloola. Traveling again, this time to encounter Gunnery. the Black and Gold showed that they were not easily fooled. The Gunnery tricky 'I'-formation was smothered by a driving eleven. Westminster easily pushed to a score of Zo-O. Encountering the Kingswood eleven again. the Williams llill squad found them as strong as before and suffered another defeat hy 33-7. On the following Saturday the Black and Gold was matched against its traditional rival in the final encounter. Pomfret proved to be a smart. strong, and heavy team which overpowered the Westminster eleven 15-O. The home team fought hard and made several threats to score, hut were unable to cross the goal line. --R. W. W. gl 'y -V 3, Numan. The Westminster uve met a well trained Loomis team on Williams Hill for their first encounter. The home tive lacked ten points until the final quarter in which they showed that they were not beaten until the final whistle. Loomis won .12-.SO in a thrill-packed game. The next week found the tive at Gunnery where they easily beat the home team 48-24. l'ete Calvert proved a good shot hy scoring Z9 points. .Xt Iierkshire, Westminster won by putting on a hnal spurt to make the seore 311-Zo. Suftield next felt the power of the Westminster quintet when they were defeated Boa! 1. Schafer, playing guard, hooped in 17 points. The squad worked hard in order to beat Loomis in their second meeting, but Loomis was well prepared for them and won 47-ZS. Spirited by their recent defeat, the quintet met Hopkins and showed they could play good liasketball. Westminster won 32-ZZ. -R. W1 VV. THE TENNIS TEAM This year Mr. Gow's Tennis Team had a fairly successful season. Art Benington was able to hold the number one spot by his good, steady play- ing. and an ability to maneuver his opponents into weak positions. Tapley held the number two spot. His games were distinguished by deep drives to the base line. These two combined to work as the first doubles team, which proved to be a definite asset to the squad in every match. Thomson and Luyties played number three and four, respectively, and united into the second doubles team. Their games were generally hard and fairly steady. The five and six positions in the singles provided competition for Warren, Risley, and Griggs who held them at various times. The number three doubles team generally consisted of Warren and Griggs. as J. L. H. . ., - J' 3 Q Q I , , s ' QW -fr l ,c it I tu: yt Wgniusrg, 6 ' pulu, ?'-- tw tSf '-'fr L5 c quusr. The pitching staff of our team consisted of Whitman, Russell, and Claude. Vlaude was new at pitching and improved tremendously as the season progressed. The team. too, improved greatly during the season. In its early games only against Simsbury did it show what it could do unhampered by errors and careless ball playing. In the last four games the team began playing lietter haseliall, The Pomfret and Kingswood games showed much better defensive liallg hut then the hitting that was needed to bring in runs at crucial moments failed. liven in the last victorious game against Berk- shire, there were several innings when two men got on bases with one Out, only to die there. a J.
