Ranum Superintendent, School District if 50 The 1976 Yearbook Is Dedicated To Mr. Iver C. Ranum, Supt. Cf District if 50 School System lt has been said that there is no honor in one's hometown. But for Iver C. Ranum, who's never moved from his hometown, the honors have been frequent and many. Where else could one rise from bus driver, coach, teacher and principal to become super- intendent of the District within a 15 -year span? And where else but School District 50 has a superintendent held that position for 25 years? Perhaps it can safely be said that his hometown provided the basis for his success as superintendent, for Iver C. Ranum never forgot from whence he came and his success in part must be attributed to his solid values and his friendliness that served him so well during the days when he wore three hats- that of bus driver, and coach. In other school districts superintendents have come and gone, but in School District 50 Iver C. Ranum still enjoys today the respect of his colleagues, his school faculty, and his cityg and the status he enjoys remains un- blemished and untarnished to all who have come to appreciate his genuine concern for every student who has participated in the edu- cational process in District 50. Mr. Ranum began his teaching career in what was then known as Union High School in 1935 after graduating from Luther College in Iowa in 1934. He taught Math, History, Physi- cal Education and was also the coach. He be- came principal of the school in 1939 and was named superintendent of District 50 in 1950. In 1947 he was awarded a Masters Degree from the University of Denver, and has taken additional Work at Colorado University. He is a member of the Local, State and National Ed- ucation Associations and has been President of both the local and county associations, Phi Delta Kappa, the Colorado Association of the American Association of Administrators. Name a civic or charitable organization and at one time or another Iver C. Ranum has served as president or chairman of the group. In addition he was a Scoutmaster, organized the first girl's softball team, was Sunday School Superintendent, and sang in the church choir. In 1950 when Iver C. Ranum became super intendent, the District had three elementary schools, one high school and 1,400 students. Today, the District has nearly 17, 000 stu- dents, 19 elementary schools, four junior highs, two senior high schools, including Iver C. Ranum High School which was dedi- cated in his honor in 1962, and now a new Westminster High School, and a Career En- richment Park. Nine of the past ten bond elections have met with success under his leadership and today the District enjoys the enviable reputa- tion of having the best in educational facili- ties to serve the needs of the 17, 000 students enrolled there. Mr. Ranum attributes this success to the dedicated parents and teachers of District 50. Through the years he has been honored by many organizations, but one of the most trea- sured honors came two years ago when he received the Distinguished Service award from the Westminster District 50 Chamber of Commerce- the highest award given by that organization. Now, he is retiring after 45 years in the District. His guiding hand will no longer steer the course of school District 50, but he can rest assured that he will have left School District 50 with a solid foundation for educa- tional excellence. His shoes will be difficult to fill. No man is so tall as when he stoops to help a child. ii-Qiiqj 9 by -evv w 'mMW.N WIM-mmwm Head Start Christmas Party 1974 n . WarnOrS Scoop vowml u. Long Branch, September 20, --President and family will leave here in a special car on Thurs- day next, and go directly to Denver, Colorado. Colorado's First University The cornerstone of the University of Colorado at Boulder, was laid yesterday, by the Grand Lodge, A.F. and A. M. , of Colorado. All the of- ficers of the Grand Lodge were present. A major- ity of them, with about 40 members of Colorado Commandery No. 1 Knights Templar, for an escort, and a large delegation of citizens, swelling the number of excursionists from Denver to at least 150, left here at 8:15, and were joined at Golden junction by quite a good sized delegation from the mountain towns. The programme previously arranged was not carried out entirely, because it was impossible to do so. The attendance was not as large as it should have been, in view of the excellent arrangements made, nor as it would have been, had the weather been more propitious. As to the weather, it is only necessary to say that it was irascible, and with that dismiss the subject. The streets were fear- fully muddy, and it rained or snowed, or both, all the time. 200 years ago in the colonies Late September 1775-- King George III of England, upset over events in the Colonies, issued orders to his subordi- nates in the Army to secure the services of mercenary troops to bolster the small British forces stationed in North America. This was a shocking action on the Crown's part as the practice was going out of style in Europe and even Frederick the Great of Prussia viewed it as intolerable. The mercenaries hired came from the small Saxon States fGermanj whose rulers emulated Louis XVI and needed the British money. The total number of mercenaries hired was 29, 875, two thirds of whom came from Hesse- Cassel and from Hesse-I-Ianau -- hence the name Hessians applied to these troops by the colonists. The total cost of this trade in human flesh came to either 850, 000 or 1, 770, 000 pounds sterling fboth are official figuresj between cost of initial rental and blood money . Over 1, 200 men were killed in action and 6, 354 died of non-battle causes. In addition, be- tween 5, 000 and 6, 000 deserted, most in America, many joining the American Army. This trade in German lives was not par- ticularly profitable for Britain. Many of the troops recruited in this fashion were extreme- ly poor. Desertion rates were high. Indeed many troops deserted en route to Hanoverian ports, but the loss was made good through the immediate kidnapping and enlistment of anyone the officers could lay their hands on. ln addition, the hiring of such mercenaries for service in the war did nothing to enhance Britain's prestige in the eyes of the world. Life, Libertm and the Pursuit of appiness The Land of Plenty Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation, to preserve your Freedom! I hope you make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven that ever ltook half the pains to preserve it john Adams 2nd President of the United States Philadelphia, 1777 Let us all, during the coming months study carefully the character, study the qualities of the men who founded this Nation. Let us try to grasp the stuff that was ins ide of each of them and all of them collectively. And then, let us release, if we can, the same spirit within ourselves. We have the same capacity for unity, dis cipline and sacrifice. Let us show the world that the character and qual- ity of the American people has not changed in 200 years. Gerald R. Ford 38th President of the United States Philadelphia, 1974 Qt 37370 W THE FIRST 200 YEARS A knowledge of American history is an invitation to experience the ac- complishment, drama, tragedy and hope of an infant nation struggling to grow up. Sturdy, determined pioneers hacked away at the edges of a raw continent and, with blunders and achievements alike, modeled a country with a spirited nature and a united commitment to individual liberty for every one of its citizens. Americans, great and not so great, have given us a heritage to carry on and improve upon. Farmers and soldiers, industri- alists and merchants, dreamers and leaders, are all there in two centuries of progress. But the maturing isn't finished. You'll find the boundaries of growth as endless today as when our forefathers first envisioned them. You can seek out your own destiny with the wisdom and judgement which comes with re-creation of the past. Your knowledge, dreams and industry will carry on through many more centuries of living history. is N CONGRESS, JULY 4, 1776. The colonists reacted in seething resentment which erupted into angry protestations. The first blood of the American Revolution was spilled during one such incident at Boston in 1770. Several Americans lost their lives over a snowball thrown at a British sentry. In the fight to achieve commerce equality, the United States found itself in a naval war over shipping lanes. Fort MCI-Ienry was heriocally held during a British naval bombardment, and the stars and stripes still flew after a night of hard fighting. The next morning Francis Scott Key penned the immortal words of what would become the national anthem. . . . E : 5,1 gi- . gs? it !!12!!1i-ML - 'M A t - -- r Tri? sgffr'-T Settlers had to have permanent access to the new lands, so canals and bridges were built to carry stages and wagon trains loaded with machinery destined for settlements in the West. The pioneers foresaw great wealth in the cheap acreage that was available. Frontiersmen cleared the wilderness, built set- tlements and drove back the Indians. The Pony Express and the telegraph became primary means of communication. Agriculture was the wealth of the country. American inventions of the time were often re- lated to working the soil. The McCormick Reaper, mowing machines, textile looms and the cotton gin were instrumental in the settling of new frontiers. In 1848, james Marshall found gold in the race of a sawmill he was building for Iohn Sutter at Coloma, California. The lust to get rich quick was the force behind this biggest and gaudiest gold rush ever. While gold rush fever gripped the country, states were increasingly more divided on the slavery issue. Civil war broke out in the East. This Brothers War was bitterly fought and, though the scars remain even today, slavery was abolished. Cities grew at an alarming pace, often without regard to the limits of safety. The great Chicago fire of 1871 burned the bustling cattle market empire beyond recognition, But the pioneer spirit was not broken. Chicagoans began re- building and preparations were underway to celebrate the 100th birthday of the country. The Iron Horse, carrying homesteaders, greatly helped settlement of the new country. The first transcontinental railroad connected the country at Promontory Summit, Utah, on May 10, 1869. Transportation was setting the pattern for the American way of life. The country became a mobile society with electric trolleys, automo- biles, farm machinery, and bicycles, all the rage. Along with the accessibility of travel came a new era of nationalism. A World War called upon the nation's young men to unite and fight. After the war in Europe, the nation pulled itself together and industry flourished once again. A carefree America bur- ied war memories in the new moving pictures, telephones, light bulbs, electric generators, stock market ticker tape machines, phono- graphs and a wealth of inventions from the fer- tile minds of its young inventors. Baseball be- came the national sport and prohibition was law. Black Thursday, October 24, 1929, saw the American stock market crash to the lowest level in history. Panic set in as the unemployment level skyrocketed. The country was in its worst economic crisis. Slowly, but surely, the wounds of the crash, the dust bowl, and poverty healed. , . The nations leaders scoffed, until December 7,1941 . . . Pearl Harbor! Industrial production reached a peak during the 'war years. Upon their return from four years of battle, the veterans forged ahead with an eye on a better life for everyone. Several mod- erate recessions in the 50's and 60s reminded cautious citizens of past decades. Huge strides were being taken in the scientific field, Television became a part of every family's life. National events were household topics - while they happened - thanks to the new medi- um. Individuals and groups were seen on the tube as they advocated new social reform, or justice, or special causes of their own. TV gave individuals and political systems power greater than ever before. Audio-visual journalism had made its impact. Nearly 100 years of struggling for civil liberties were realized when President Lyndon Baines johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law. The Act outlawed segregation in any form, The seventies shed light on a new trouble for the nation as it approached its zoorh birthday, The world's energy sources and natural re- sources were being used up faster than they could be replenished. Americans once again waded into a new frontier, The energy crisis and ecology were prominent words in the language. Ways to save nature from the neglect of mankind and ways of preserving precious fuel without damaging that balance of nature were the objectives of Americans across the country. t 1 v ianii , 'ff' A f if i ,rK'ft1a '1jf9 4 Tj -1 J -.3-7 ' fftjgffr KJ 3? ,Z jx-A -2: e 44' - .' Those are the prices offered to our founding fathers to encourage set- tlement of the wilderness areas of this nation. A stage wasn't the most comfortable way to go, but you could get from city to city for as little as 53 - at the amazing pace of six miles per hour. Compare todayfs wages with a 12-hour day in the early 1800's. A man earned 506 a day. Of course his dollar bought a little more than today's. Butter in 1826 was about 56 lb. in the Midwest, eggs, 36 doz.p corn 66 bu., wheat, 256 bu., and a cow could be bought for 55. With travel becoming the American tradi- tion, you could choose train, wagon, horseback or the water. A canal ride, with bed and board included, averaged 3 or 46 per mile. And when you reached your des- tination, you could sit down to a 5, or even 10 course meal for 256. tl.adies 206, in consideration of appetite.l Farmers in the early 1800fs could own the famous McCormick Reaper for a mere 5100. But the Civil War increased prices as the machine became the first item farmers could buy on time payments for the sum of 51,500. A good suit of clothes then might cost 51,95 and ladies waists tblousesj were marketed for 496 to 53.50 with a whole dress pattern priced at 15c. Cookstoves, quality-satisfaction guaran- teed, could cost you 529.25 at 54 per month and a dandy heating stove could set you back as much as 55.73 and up. The first electric refrigerator cost 5900 - which might be enough to make you faint on your 1907 fainting couch that had cost a mere 57.85. Your new baby travelled in the height of fashion in a wicker sleeping coach tstroll- erj for the sum of 512.04. If you had 51,500 in 1903 you could show off in one of the first automobiles, Ah, those were the days. Some of the cur- rent prices are reminiscent of those days, but at frontier prices, which were a whole different story. Hardy pioneers had to pay 52 a pound for sugar, too. And the same for a pound of coffee or pepper. Those items were only 156 per pound back in civ- ilized St, Louis. Flour was marked up 100 times for sale to the frontiersmen and dur- ing the famous Cold Rush, that precious commodity went for 5400 a barrel. ..-- .-ef S rr'! '. The events which took place in Dayton, Tennessee, during the scorching july of 1925 are clearly the genesis of this play. It has, however, an exodus entirely of its own. Only a handful of phrases have been taken from the actual trans- cript of the famous Scopes trial. Some of the characters of the play are related to the colorful figures in that battle of giants, but they have life and language of their own--and, therefore, names of their own. The greatest reporters and historians of the century have written millions of words about the Monkey Trial. We are indebted to them for their brilliant reportage. And we are grateful to the late Arthur Garfield Hays, who recounted to us much of the unwritten vividness of the Dayton adventure from his own memory and experience. The collision of Bryan and Darrow at Dayton was dramatic but it was not a drama. Moreover, the issues of their conflict have ac- quired new dimensions and meaning in the thirty years since they clashed at the Rhea County Court house. So Inherit The Wind does not pretend to be journalism. It is theatre. It is not 1925. The stage directions set the time as Not too long ago. It might have been yesterday. It could be tomorrow. It has been a time of experimenting with the new while holding steadily to the traditions of the past. The Warriors moved into their new 4. 5 million dollar home even before the workmen had fin- ished it, and settled down to making the open concept suit their needs. At the Same time the new 1. 7 million dollar Career Park opened to give students a myriad of Voc-ed opportunities beyond the traditional high school. It has been a year of the new .... a new high school, a new Career Park, a new community stad ium, a new principal, new teachers, new courses, new friends. It hasn't always been easy, but th Warriors took it all in stride and continued their pursuit of education. But years end, the new home of the Warriors had become Westminster High School. - I 4?
