Laman, T. Chavez. The 1964 basketball season had its ups and downs for the Westy cagers. Losing the first seven non-league games, the Warriors came into league competition with dim hopes of gaining anything but a cellar position. The Warriors dropped their first league game to the Littleton Lions by a score of 49-75. The next game was with rivaled Ranum. The Warriors were ready and walloped the Raiders 75-62. The surprise of the season was the Warrior victory over the Cherry Creek Bruins 70-55. The Warrior's encountered with the Denver Christian Crusaders gave the team its highest scoring game in Westminster history, S5-72. The first round of league play closed with the Warriors easily defeating the Adams City Eagles 82-65. In the second encounter of Westy and Littleton, the Warriors gave the Lions a real fight and lost only in the last minute on free throws 54-58, The Warriors still had hopes for the number one position after defeating Rantun for the second time 73-67. These hopes faded though when the Warriors dropped their second Cherry Creek encounter, 50-51, in overtime play. Coach Hustad had a variety of players this year with representation from all classes, Soph- omores Steve Barnett and Tom Chavez provided the team with both speed and accuracy. Juniors Bob Cook, Mike Newton, and Jerry Lamanprovided all the skill needed for a top notch team. Seniors Ken Rutt, Dan Barnett, Dave Robinson, Dan Osborn, Kim Henderson, Red Walker, and Rich Barker completed the Warrior team by skill, speed, and that extra spark of Warrior spirit needed to win. This year's Warrior team was by far one of the best in Westy's history and the five returning lettermen next year will provide the Warriors with a great team to start out in the new Skyline league.
