The subjects are varied to include those students interested in vocal instruction, from the girls' glee and mixed chorus to the A Cappella choir for the more advanced student. The instrumentalist is taught in classes of band and also by competitive marches and parades. Courses offered for those students showing an interest but not necessarily planning a career in music are such classes as music appreciation. The purpose of the music department is primarily to allow those students with an interest of talent in music to enlarge this interest or talent through advanced study. ? by JOYCE BLASER BERNICE COBB HENRY REITER B.S,, Kansas State University A.B. With only four returning Letter- men, the Varsity squad faced the difficult task of meeting improved and experienced foes during the season. The hi-light of the season was Westminsters Homecoming, when the Warriors faced.the riveled Ranum Raiders. Every Warrior put forth his maximum effort to defeat the Raiders, and were leading 7-0 at the half. However, the Raiders came back in the second' half and scored twice, defeating the, Warriors 14- 7. The Warriors claimed two victories over non-league foes. Early in the season the Warriors defeated Arvada West 7-0. Later the Warriors tromped the Sheridan Union Rams with a record score of 40-7. The Warriors will not be remembered for their victories, but even though the odds were against them they never gave up. . Q w-'-' 1 , , q w- Warrior picks up loose ball in Homecoming game. The 1964 basketball season had its ups and downs for the Westy cagers. Losing the first seven non-league games, the Warriors came into league competition with dim hopes of gaining anything but a cellar position. The Warriors dropped their first league game to the Littleton Lions by a score of 49-75. The next game was with rivaled Ranum. The Warriors were ready and walloped the Raiders 75-62. The surprise of the season was the Warrior victory over the Cherry Creek Bruins 70-55. The Warrior's encountered with the Denver Christian Crusaders gave the team its highest scoring game in Westminster history, S5-72. The first round of league play closed with the Warriors easily defeating the Adams City Eagles 82-65. In the second encounter of Westy and Littleton, the Warriors gave the Lions a real fight and lost only in the last minute on free throws 54-58, The Warriors still had hopes for the number one position after defeating Rantun for the second time 73-67. These hopes faded though when the Warriors dropped their second Cherry Creek encounter, 50-51, in overtime play. Coach Hustad had a variety of players this year with representation from all classes, Soph- omores Steve Barnett and Tom Chavez provided the team with both speed and accuracy. Juniors Bob Cook, Mike Newton, and Jerry Lamanprovided all the skill needed for a top notch team. Seniors Ken Rutt, Dan Barnett, Dave Robinson, Dan Osborn, Kim Henderson, Red Walker, and Rich Barker completed the Warrior team by skill, speed, and that extra spark of Warrior spirit needed to win. This year's Warrior team was by far one of the best in Westy's history and the five returning lettermen next year will provide the Warriors with a great team to start out in the new Skyline league. unior VZZTSZQJ BACK ROW: Left to Right, Coach Lotrich, M. All of the one hundred girls are re- quired to attend a majority of the sports events that Westy's athletes participate in. The girls follow the cheerleaders in yelling and cheering the boys on to VICTORY. During football season the Pep Club sponsored a drill team in which about half of the girls took part. They performed intricate drills during the half times along with the pompon girls and the cheerleaders. Each of the drill team members is entitled to wear ared star on her sweater for her work. Any girl is eligible to join Pep Club if her grades are average, she makes a written request, and she is accepted. After one year in the club any girl is eligible to try out to be a cheerleader, banner girl, or pompon girl. 145 etteffmarfs Club , , .Aw Frank Babkiewich Richard Barker Dan Barnett Mike Beasley Dan Beauvais Bob Bigham Richard Borchers Dale Camblin Jack Chalmers Joe Chaney Mike Conrad 146 coming Parade. Among their activities, the Lettermen sell programs at the games, and support the teams by cheering with the white shirt section. The Lettermen undertook a special pro- ject this year by helping to purchase the blue blazers for the Westy Coaches. Members of Letterman's Club are required to earnaletter in one of the eight sports at Westminster. During this day students elected from the senior class take over the govern- ment of our city. Each student is given a tour and explanation of his office by the city official and the group is taken on a tour of the city plants. During the afternoon a mock city council is held. Problems facing the city are then brought up, discussed, and voted on by the city council. City officials are also expected to give reports on their office. The day was a great success. Students learned a great deal about city government as well as specific offices concerned with the city. NIayOI' . . . . Richard Borchers Souncilmen . Ken Van Cleave Souncilmen . . .
