Throughout history, Maryland has been the site of many crucial battles during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Our National An them was Written by Francis Scott Key as he wa tched the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air over Fort Mcl-lenry during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Throughout its history Maryland has served as an important center for commerce with other sta tes and wi th foreign countries. And even since Indians inhabited the savage forest of this sta te, the Bay, teeming wi th life, has supplied Maryland Wi th her greatest natural resourcesg the crab and the oyster. Th us the history of Maryland is not only our heritage as Marylanders, but it is truly part of every American 's heritage. 1-4 7
