Throughout history, Maryland has been the site of many crucial battles during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Our Na tional An them was written by Francis Scott Key as he wa tched the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air over Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Throughout its history Maryland has served as an important center for commerce wi th other sta tes and with foreign countries. And even since Indians inhabited the savage forest of this sta te, the Bay, teeming with life, has supplied Maryland wi th her grea test na tural resourcesg the crab and the oyster. Th us the history of Maryland is not only our heritage as Marylanders, but it is truly part of every American 's heritage.

In these historical scenes is captured the grandeur, lavish beauty, and the free, lighthearted cavalier spirit of colonial Maryland. 6

Snow da pples the gently rolling hills and a Herce, biting wind whips the bleak, barren Helds of win ter. With the coming of spring, the farmer enters his Held to sew anew the seeds which yield this year's bountiful harvest. Beneath the sun 's golden warm th and the clear azure heavens, tiny sprouts peep above the rich earth. Patiently, the farmer nurtures them un til, with the arrival of summer, the fields are filled to the brim with their succulent yield. The gilded leaves of autumn are illuminated by the orange glow of sun. A sharp fresh breeze rustles the corn stalks, laden with full maize-colored ears, their gift to the fall harvest. Cattle graze peacefully in frost-nipped pastures, and the farmer waits for the arrival of another spring, another harvest. This is our home, Carroll County. The Carroll County of today and yesterday. lt is a county whose roots lie in the agricultural development of its rich, fertile fields and pasturelands.
