May it serve in future years to link the class of '46 with friends and experiences at W. H. S. We wish to express our gratitude to the faculty, to whom we are deeply indebted for the instruction and guidance they have given us, and to our principal, Mr. Richter, who with .sincere interest in the welfare of the students and school has led us through our senior year. A Message from the Principal Horace Mann, one of the stalwart champions of early public schools, said to his last graduating class nearly one hundred years ago, Be ashamed to die until you have Won some victory for humanity. What a challenge for 1946! The World looks to you, citizens of tomorrow, for the answers to the unsolved problems of war, famine, and industrial strife. N0 more significant challenge can I give you, the first graduating class of my administration, than this from Mr. Mann's last message to his students in Antioch College. Class History A log of the voyage of the good ship 'L'46 , having set out in Septem- ber of nineteen hundred and forty two, with over a hundred hearty souls aboard, onto rough seas with the goal of Diploma Land many years dis- tant. X September 1942: T'he crew seemed in high spirits as we began our long and arduous journey. We were subject to the hazing of several of the older, more ex- perienced hands, but bore up well. We are allowed to do nothing but the most menial tasks, as we are but novices at sailing the seas of higher education. The journey will be trying but We are determined to see it through to the end. June 1943: Our first goal, Sophomore Island , has been reached. There is much rejoicing among the crew as we have put a full year behind us . . . yet ahead lie many perils. September 1943: We are well into the Straits of Sophomorus and the going is some- what easier. The older crew members permit us a little more freedom and we are beginning to feel accustomed to our surroundings. We were all allowed to celebrate on the day of St. Valentines - - the occasion being one of riotous merriment. June 1944: A few of us have been entrusted with greater responsibility as we near the Gulf of Juniorem . Half of our journey is now completed and we face the future with firm hearts and confidence. September 1944. We enter the third year of our journey no longer novices, but full fledged seamen knowfing all the ropes like Veterans. We subject the younger crewmates to some of that hazing which we were obliged to bear some years ago. Several of our members take part in weekly enter- tainment held on the main deck, and we climax this new feeling of im portance with a gala St. Patrick's day party. June 1945: The waters of Seniorus are just off our bow. September 1945: Our old and faithful commander, Admiral Seitz, retired, but our journey continues with the able Admiral Richter at the helm. We are now the oldest and most experienced hands aboard and have many privileges-- we pride ourselves in our selectness. Every night a few of the crew row over to the island of 4'Marg and Earlus where there is much dancing and merriment. The most festive occasion of our entire journey, The Prom, is a tremendous success, as the main deck is gaily decorated and we dance the merry hours away. June 1946: Directly ahead of us lies Diploma Land - - the goal of your years of labor and hard work, and as we drop anchor in Commencement Cove , we are filled with pride and satisfaction. For the first time i11 the history of Westminster High School a chapter of the National llonor Society has been founded. This society was founded by a soc- ondary school principal in l921. Twenty seven hundred chapters are now scatter- vd over the United States and other countries. The purpose of the chapter is to stimulate scholarship, leadership, service and character' among the students in high schools throughout the country. It 1-ndcavors to make them strive for highcr records in scholarship, and to render service to their school and community. It tries to bring out qualities of leader- ship and to develop character. The members are elected by the faculty. The students must have an aver- cragc of B in order to be eligible for membership. lf at any time a member's average should drop below B he is not allowed to remain a member of the organization. He must also turn in all pins and in- signia. Scratch . . . Scratch Click . . . Click If you happen to hear these sounds coming from the Owl room you know the senior journalists are in the midst of publishing the monthly Owl ! These headlines won't work out, What happened to the an- trim article? Where's the copy? But all their sweat- ing and griping is forgotten when they see the finish- ed product favorably meet with the critical eyes of the underclassmen. Sweat . Sweat . . Sweat . . . That's what these bud- ding journalists will be doing next. Their wrath was proned this year by publishing two issues of the Owl. May they keep up their industriousness and remember occassion- ally those who strived this year for a bigger and better Owl . W.H.S. M.P.'s... Those Military Police under the leadership of Captain Francis Martin have proven themselves to be an important part of W. H. S. They are an invaluable aid to the bus drivers, and they assist in directing traffic at various school activities. M Work - M, Play . . . This club really stands by the old motto, fAll work and no play makes Jael: a dull boy. These .Junior and Senior students Know their operas back- ward and forward and tney'll jump at a chance to tell you about any com- poser. Those informal tal- ent programs once a month are really tops with them. Earth Has A Voice . . . And so do the members of the mixed Glee Club - - and what voices too. They are W. H. S's prize group of warblers and they make many contributions to as- semblies, P. T. A.'s and other outside organiza- tions. Mrs. Hunter's un- tiring work with these stu- dents helps make them what they are and she de- serves much credit for her efforts. Boys' Chorus . . . Every Tuesday during the sixth period, do you hear the sound of joyful uyoung men's voices echo- ing through the halls of W. H. S.? If you do, it's probably the Junior-Sen- ior Boys' Chorus singing their way through their weekly class which is dir- ected by Mrs. Hunter. Hubba! Hubba! . . . W. II. S. gals swoon over these handsome rom- eos of the Octet when they start serenading with Round her neck she wore a yaller ribbon. Mrs. llunter shares their laughs and fun as they work. Oh! A Capella . . . Music has the power to soothe the savage beast when made by the A Capella choir. Although the group was newly intro- duced this year, it has al- ready proven its worth. Mi...Mi...Mi... Such are the voice ex- ercises of the Girl's Glee Club during their Wednes- day chorus period. The lovely melodies that they sing remind us that Music soothes the savage beast. Maybe there're not fu- ture Harry .James or Tom- my Dorseys but they do an excellent job of giving us music for assemblies and a game now and then. The club is a very new one, was or- ganized for the first time ths year under Mr. A1- brecht's direction. Artisteers . . . Have you noticed the excellent scenery for some of our plays? Or maybe the posters in the front hall? The Art Club is the one to be thanked for all this. They spend their time doing all sorts of art Work for the school. For one day in February six girls of W. H. S. put away their sweaters and skirts and donned soft even- ing gowns for the Queen of Hearts ceremony, an annual affair around the school. Martha Schaeffer was crowned our own queen and Mary Groft, .Ioan Royer, Junita Starner, Molly Hyder and Jacqueline Taylor were representatives of their classes in her court.
