' V THI: OWL Class Hlstory Nxneteen thlrty one has come' The year that has ever been before us and to whxch we have so anxlously looked forward Now, slnce we have reach ed the pmnacle of our hxgh school career, we glance back over the road which has been traveled Well do we remember that brlght September day ln 1928 when we entered the portals of W H S as Freshxes We were frightened over what would be expected of us, and yet, at the same time felt we were becommg grown up bemg classed as hlgh school students how we were decelvedl Soon we fell nn wxth the regular routine of thns new l1fe and progressed very rapxdly under the superv1s1on of our excellent teachers even obeying the Senlor call Stop talkmg 1n lme Our flrst year was not filled wlth so many extra actlvltles but we were kept busy establxshmg scholastlc records for ourselves Our actxons would often reveal how young m years we were for htgh school, but we were only Freshmen, so the Faculty looked forward to the day when we would be DIGNIFIED Seniors We can console the faculty by remmdmg them of Brownmgs quotation A mans grasp should always exceed his reach Rejolcxng 1n the name of Sophomores, we returned the next September filled wxth new zeal and determined to be an outstandlng class especially ln guardlanshlp for the Infants who succeeded us as Freshmen After two or three weeks of patlent, as well as careful trammg, we tamed the hnlarxous spxrxts of the chxldren , usually wlthout the a1d or presence of any member of the We soon discovered that our lessons were harder than those of the prevlous year, but there were more extra actlvmes to atone for thxs hardshnp In due time we elected our class ofhcers, who proved to be very capable ones Our flrst bug functlon was a masque class party held on Hallowe en ln the assembly hall Varxous games and xnterestmg amusements as well as the most welcome refreshments, made the party a success Our art1st1c abllxty as Sophs was dlsplayed at the school bazaar where we had a Cider Barrel Then later when the opportunlty came for our athletlc skxll to be shown at 1ts best, we helped to put up a good fight on Fleld Day Toward the end of the year, It IS not dlfflcult to xmagme the awesome re spect and admlratlon we had for the upper classmen for we ourselves were reachnng the threshold of umorlsm We passed through the door wxth eager ness and antlclpatlon, but w1th a sadness at our hearts for the loss of our be loved classmate no we shall never forget Eltmge' The Junlor year was a year of nmportance for us Great strldes were taken ln athletxcs, muslc and dramatxcs Slx umors were on the final declamatlon contest and we are proud to clalm that two of them, who represented W H S at the county contest, placed ln thxs event Some of the classmates took part 1n The Lucky Jade , which proved to be a success, whnle many entered ln the county meet The Elsteddfod was won by our school wlth the umors again helpmg to brlng honor to the school the wmnlng solo bemg glven by one of our classmates, whlle some boys and glrls from our crew shone lh the well tramed choruses The w1se old glrl The Owl flew 1nto our midst of our dutles the latter part of our unlor year Whlle we were rather startled by its presence It was recenved wnth open arms, and the best of our protectxon was gzven to lt In 38 ' W 0 ff ' ,Y ' .
