Delicious, golden honey. :Q Bumpity, bump, bump, up the time-worn stairs and past the well-kept columns skipped a hungry Pooh Bear. Ah, 5 he exclaimed, a college. His quest involved some golden honey, and he was hoping to find some in the columns. What ARE these columns for if not to store honey? mused Pooh. Even a rotten tree, if filled with honey, would be better. And he searched up and down, but not a drop of honey was stored in the barren, white pillars. Silly, hopeful old bear, Pooh muttered to himself. Honey isn't found in columns such as these. 3 Still, for honey do I dream, said Pooh Bear. Delicious, golden honey. l What's that, what's that? avoice barked out. Dreaming about eating honey? For the birds, Bear! You must think about everything! Why, Bear, have you ever thought about smashing babies against walls? Consider such an idea. It's 'X iii much better than honey, much better. ' Pooh did not know such avoice. Who are you? he wondered. 9? Me, me, I'm a student of this college. I think about things. Worthwhile things, not visions of golden honey. I think ' about reasons for things. Reasons FOR smashing babies against walls and reasons AGAINST smashing babies against walls. Well, do you? asked Pooh. D Do I what? yapped the student. it Do you smash babies against walls? continued Pooh. For in the end, that is what makes all the difference. Or all the same. ' No, ofcourse not, yapped the student. I only think about whether I should or not. la it Qi -- . ., .. .. .. ,V-.gm-1 . ,. ,. Q , -- - Pooh paused, noticing a butterfly entrapped in a spider's web between two of the columns. Then discouraged, Pooh sighed, Yes, go ahead and think about all things. For myself, I shall always try to dream of the golden honey that I might find. Pooh turned away from the student who was unable to understand the silly, dreaming bear. Ah, still, for honey do I love, said Pooh Bear. Delicious, golden honey. Honey equals love, a new voice said. Definitely a theory that must be tested. I haven't come across such a theory in any of my books. Q Startled, Pooh turned once again and reluctantly asked, Who are you? I am a professor, more precisely, a professor of mathematics and science, the man replied. I prove and disprove all theories about the world. Consider your hypothesis: If honey, then love. Pooh Bear winced, and a tear appeared in his eye. lf honey is love, then bees make love because bees make honey, and honey is love. But bees sting, so love must sting, but if love stings, there is no reason to love. Therefore, you cannot love honey. Pooh sadly looked back at the sterile columns and saw the spider approaching the captured butterfly. I must leave. the dejected bear murmured. Goodbye, smiled the professor, shaking Pooh's paw. I'm glad that I proved your love of honey to be logically inconsistent. You're much better off now. Hoping no longer, Pooh Bear turned away. His dreams had been destroyed. Poor, silly bear. The empty columns, the yapping student, and the logical professor were not involved in his quest for delicious, golden honey. As Pooh trudged back through the columns, he pleaded, But love must be possible, it must make sense. But the actions of the townspeople were less than worth commendation. There was ass-pitching and many many examples of immaturity. These actions serve to scare away even the few Woodsie's that chose to participate. This is the greatest complaint I have heard from the Westminster students, but run- ning a close second was the complaint of land ex- pectedl lack of participation from the Woodsie's. I'm glad to see the participation of Westminster in this fad. It shows a new morality and liberalism that after many years of falling behind, has finally hit the campus. Each of your college instructors has filled a small compartment in your mind and to a lesserdegree your high school and grade school teachers. But perhaps the greatest compartment of all is filled by the experi- ences and contacts and associations with other people while at the school. College is the place where you grow not just intellectually but spiritually and in the ways of maturation. When first entering as a freshman the dist- ance to becoming a senior seems extremely long, but on reaching that aloof status the way is infinitesmally short. Most of the people that one has run across or been asso- ciated with in his four years will be lostupon graduation. This situation is admittably lamentable but there islittle one can do because of geographical differences and changes that come about upon graduating. lf, 1 ff - 'nut ii .51 X Standing in the hot sun on graduation day supposedly is the biggest day of a man's life. One cannot help but think about the absurdity of the situation. The chaste Columns that one was never supposed to pass through lexcept maybe while streakingl stand before one and you find you don't care about that, only of getting back to that fi- nal meal in the house where the final good-bye's to the brothers you have acquired while at school. - ' You listen to the speaker that has been 'brought from times past or from present, listen intently and find he has said nothing. If you are one ofthe peoplethat just can not stand the sound of bitching, please read no further. H In order to start this glorious dissertation, I will comment on the fraternities. The fraternities on this campus were originally established as fraternal organi- zations as in the classic case. But in the majority of the houses, or perhaps all of them, this conception has certainly been lost. In this past year as editor of this great literary edifice, I have consistently had the most trouble gaining coopera- tion from the fraternities. I am sure that I will receive an extraordinary amount of bitching that my house was poorly represented. Well you poor bastards, your president was asked repeatedly for pictures of house activities, the year- book staff tried to set up original group pictures and in both endeavors, we failed miserably. Unfortunately, each house was content to use the pictures that were on the composite in the traditional fashion, because it was one hell of a lot less trouble. If an organization bills itself as being fraternal, why doesn't it help? At this time I would like to apologize for this book coming out late. I certain- ly could blame this on others for blowing me off, but that accomplishes noth- ing, so if you have complaints, please come to me. '1::5 1'-' .1 Football arrived on the local scene in the fall of 1893 when a group of students calling themselves the best eleven in college began to work out at the Deaf and Dumb Institute. It did not take long for a rival group to challenge the braggarts, and a match game was arranged for Thanksgiving Day at Star Park just below the Hockaday house. According to the local press account, some 300 or 400 turned out to watch the Kickers maul the best eleven in college 15 to 2. The GAZETTE'S reporter noted: The Kickers were outweighed but showed greater head- work and superior generalship. The College made several bad plays, they seemed to be afraid of getting their suits dirty ... We are sorry to say that we did not see anything worthy of mention on the College team except the claim- ing of fouls on the part of Lamkin. The following fall Maule welded the components of these two outfits into Westminster's first real football team. With Ellison A. Neel at quarterback and Maule at left half, the boys challenged some kind of a team in Mexico and came off the worse for wear. The rather slightly built Maule was knocked out early in the game while Mexico had a fullback who went at will either around or through or over us as his fancy dictated. About all our boys could do was to run along beside him and hope that he would fall down and break a leg which he never did. The final score stood 44 to 4. Under the leadership of L. Mitchell White, the college's outstanding athlete during this period, the students re- organized the old Westminster Athletic Association in the fall of 1902 and gave it complete charge of all sports. It sold memberships for a dollar a year which enabled the holders to attend all games. New enthusiasm was aroused among the merchants. The Association purchased 15 new uniforms and hired Sam Anderson, one of the famous State University Tigers, to coach the team. With White captaining the eleven from his fullback slot for the fourth straight year the Westminster squad compiled a highly successful 4-2-3 season. Following a disastrous 1921 season, coach Hubert Green resigned at mid year. With the help of a special alumni committee, President Reed lured james E. Pixlee from the world of business to serve as Green's successor. An alumnas of the University of Missouri, Possum Pix- E R l -l I ? l l K , R Ng,- ' 1+ - --' ----- - --- --- -...f- cs. r::..,-, -f : g:,::y.g.. lee had coached at Missouri Wesleyan and- Oklahoma A84M interspersed with a stint in the army. He had been a success all three places and during the next 716 years would take Westminster to the small college athletic heights. Like his predecessors Pixlee coached football, basketball, and baseball, and he produced numerous champions in all three. The following winter, in December, 1922, Westminster joined eight other church-related colleges at Moberly to discuss their relationships within the Missouri Intercolle- giate Athletic Association. They had become increasingly dissatisfied with the amount of subsidization given athlet- ics by the state supported schools as well as by differ- ences in school terms and in curriculum. Now, they de- cided that the time had come to withdraw and establish their own conference. They created the Missouri College Athletic Union and elected Dean George Sweazay as its first president. This move greatly reduced tensions and provided overall a more competitive situation for both groups. That spring, Coach Pixlee appeared before the Board to ask for certain improvements at Priest Field to equip it for a better all around sports program. Once begun, the bet- terment program grew beyond original intentions. When finally finished in the spring of 1924, Priest Field had two gridirons -- one to be kept sodded for regular play and the other for practice -plus a 25 foot cinder track with four laps to the mile surrounding the main playing area. Four baseball diamonds and four tennis courts had also been provided. Topping it all off were permanent bleach- ers on the west side of the new'football field and a small field house on the east. To justify all this academically and indeed his existence on the faculty, Pixlee, in the meantime, had introduced a full schedule of courses in physical education and coach- ing theory. The college required the former of all fresh- men while upperclassmen had to pass a physical fitness test at stated intervals. The latter came under the new education curriculum being developed, and students might elect up to four hours toward their degree. Pixlee spent the major portion of his time, however, in building competitive teams for intercollegiate sports. He recruited widely and secured the assistance of local mer- chants, who hired his athletes for a variety of odd jobs. - 2'.:S'QE:-112'i?:ufgef4::5 -Siiifznzr 'Y51rff5EEEay?EE?Er5iE : - rfffrffffff- f' sm. , :4.- argent...-N., ..-......-Mx..- V - ...A . i i Led by Curt Blattner and Boulware jameson,,the business- men organized the Blue lay Association, a forerunner of the present-day quarterback clubs. In the fall of 1924, Bru- tus K. Hamilton joined the faculty as assistant coach and instructor in history with athletic enthusiasts among the alumni and townspeople subscribing at least part of his salary. That year, 1924-25, Pixlee's efforts suddenly paid off in grand fashion. Westminster entered its golden age of sports. For the next decade and a half the Blue lays would dominate M.C.A.U. competition in every activity. It be- gan with Westminster's first winning football team since the great squad of 1911. Their supporters had an inkling of things to come when the Blue lays opened the season with a 13-0 victory over William Jewell at Liberty - the first time they had beaten the Cardinals in 23 years tthey had not played them in 19119. The campus went wild as cars of boys sped through the streets yelling, singing, and shouting. Then a snake dance formed. President Reed declined to grant a full holiday on the Saturday fol- lowing the game but did give the students the first hour off so that they could meet the victorious gridders when they arrived at the depot As the season progressed so did the tension, particular- ly since the Blue lays went through their first five games unscored on. Sometimes the games away from home would be carried on that new invention, the radio, and the students would gather around a centrally located set in ReUnion Hall to listen to the play-by-play account. Reed appointed Pressly Edwards as the college's press reporter to follow the squad and relay word to the city newspapers on each Friday afternoon's game so that it would make the Saturday morning editions. With the col- lege in the midst of its fund-raising efforts, the president did not wish to miss a turn on publicity. The Blue lays finally yielded a touchdown to Missouri Wesleyan in winning 13-7 but bounced back to shut out Drury 6-0 at the second annual homecoming and Dad's Day celebration. A 33-9 triumph over Central Wesleyan paved the way for the final game with Central, the ancient rival, at Fayette on Thanksgiving Day. Victory there would clinch the conference championship as well as an unde- feated season. The Blue lay Association arranged for an eight-car special train to take students and townspeople to the home of the Eagles It included four day coaches two parlor cars and a diner to accommodate those who -as-aQu...,,z-v.s.,gh.q ' 1 - 1 U K W Y WNW, -,.,,.,,.,4.,,..,- ,ff,,...,-fu.,---fa.-Q .He ---L-w ' ff ' wanted their turkey dinners en route. An enormous throng witnessed the Westminster heroes score two fourth quarter touchdowns to win it 13-0. The joy of the Fulton crowd knew no bounds, and a gay train returned to the Kingdom of Callaway that evening. Fortunately, the faculty had already agreed to give thestudents Friday and Saturday off, win or lose. When the KANSAS CITY STAR picked its mythical all- state college eleven, three Westminster men made the first team: lack Frost and joe Haw at tackles, Max Farring- ton at quarterback. Frost received the additional honor of being named captain of the all-stars. Beyond this, the Blue lays placed four men on the second team and one on the third with three receiving honorable mention - not a single member of the first eleven being overlooked. Westminster's football champions of 1924 did not re- peat their success the following year as they fell victim to their old nemesis, William lewell, and to Missouri Wesley- an, but they roared back in 1926 to lose only to Kirksville Normal in the opening game, then go through their con- ference season of seven games undefeated and unscored on. Again, the climax on the field came at Fayette with a special train carrying the Blue lay supporters to watch the L1-ui1:5-.::.::4Q..:-.i4g:?Tlzss::':z:Eehui::.'f-ggg '-1:51:17 ' ,., . -- -.. , ' ' ' -rr J'-'mf--f -15:v..0- -:::53:.+: .i5'z3g,,g,,-,L 21-0 triumph. But unfortunately the football story did not quite end there that fall. A few minutes after the game, Professor Frederic A. Culmer of Central, the duly elected official arbiter of the M.C.A.U., raised the question of the eligibility of the Blue lay's star end, Hank Iba. At their first meeting of the fall term, the faculty, following a long-standing practice, had agreed to allow Iba to take a second final examination in sophomore English on the recommendation of jerry Reeves. He had failed the first time out in the spring, but under Westminster rules iwhich many other colleges also followed! at that time, he could petition for a second chance. Ordinarily this must be done within a week, but Hank had gone off to summer school at Warrensburg and did not get around to it until he returned. The second time out, he passed both the examination and the course. On November 13, with the entire season completed ex- cept for the Central game, Professor Culmer announced that thereafter all grades to be counted toward eligibility had to be on the college books by the end of the semes- ter. This meant no makeup examinations. Westminster agreed that they could live with this if the others could but had no idea it would be applied retroactively. Within a week of the game, Culmer made Iba's ineligibility for football official. 1 ':1....A.-1:...,.,--fzzilggggeifgqigggzagzgrffi.fgggfzzzggfqiz -1-a A 5. Ful- tonians and the college community awoke the day after the Central game to read in the Kansas City papers that Culmer had declared him ineligible on the grounds of professionalism. Unlike the lba case, this implied gross misconduct on the part of Westminster officials in cover- ing up the facts. ln reality, these men had raised the ques- tion themselves with Culmer early in the season after becoming fearful that White's participation in Chillicothe Business College prior to coming to Fulton might cause problems. Inasmuch as White made no attempt to trans- fer credits from there, the arbiter declared him eligible. Then after the Blue lay victory he reversed himself on the basis of new evidence, the exact nature and source of which he refused to reveal in public. Westminster protested and carried an appeal to the annual M.C.A.U. meeting in Kansas City on December 11. Here they requested an open hearing with the press as spectators. The other schools refused. Behind closed doors, Culmer revealed that after protests from William Jewell and one other school, unnamed but not Central, he had investigated the White case further. In doing so, he found that White had played and coached for his hometown business college three years without really attending the school, receiving various renumerations as he needed them for his services. Pixlee, according to his later statement to the press, refuted all of this with affida- vitsp but the conference upheld Culmer. They exonerated Westmins'ter's coaching staff and the college officials of any knowledge of or collusions in White's problems but nevertheless expelled the school from the conference. They just as promptly turned around and offered read- mission which Westminster accepted. lt was a sad mo- ment for Dean Sweazey, who had headed the M.C.A.U. since its inception and who quietly but firmly upheld the college's case. Both Coaches Pixlee and Hamilton stayed on for two more years. The 1927 football squad, hampered by gradu- ation losses, managed only a 3-4-1 season, but Pixlee came back in 1928 to coach the Blue lays to a 6-2-1 cam- paign. The following spring he announced his resignation to go to George Washington University as head football coach and director of athletics. A fierce competitor, Pix- lee had made an excellent record at Westminster and brought the school a considerable amount of athletic fame. , 2 --1.1: ...sh Westminster felt the depression with full force by the fall of 1931. It became necessary in October, as the trea- sury stood empty, to ask the faculty to voluntarily return some of their salaries. All but two did, and the college saved S3,000. Registration showed a student body above 300 with a full freshman class, but nearly one-third were receiving some kind of aid. Still the college maintained its standards with some 20 prospects turned away for aca- demic or other reasons. Melvin promised the Board at its February, 1932, meeting, that he would present a trimmed budget in june with some faculty cuts and reductions in salary from the president down through the ranks. He al- ready had a faculty committee working with the dean to see what could be done. Shortly thereafter Westminster suffered another blow. Sometime that spring a Mr. Monilaw, an investigator for the Executive Council of the North Central College Asso- ciation, visited the campus apparently unannounced. In examining the school's records, he discovered that a larger percentage of the football squad receiving scholar- ship aid or employment on campus than the percentage of such aid and employment in the whole student body. When he reported this to his superiors, they placed West- minster on probation for a year without a hearing or even a warning. College officials protested that the discrepen- cies did not exist by design. But the action made it essen- tial to bring athletic expenses, which had again gone in the hole by 54,000, into line, especially in view of the whole budgetary review then being undertaken. On Thursday, May 5, 1932, the faculty met in special session to hear the report of the dean's committee on budget. In light of the North Central's action and the straightened financial circumstances of the college, it recommended that football be temporarily discontinued. With President Melvin and Danny Gage absent and Coach Stuber abstaining, the faculty voted 16-0 to accept the proposal and pass it on to the Board. At the same time they asked the trustees to try to retain Stuber in some other capacity should he desire to stay. The following day, Dean Sweazey and Professors Mc- Cluer and McPheeters presented the faculty action to a special called meeting of the Board in St. Louis with cer- tain interested alumni present. A thorough discussion ensued with President Melvin supporting the facuIty's request. He had been in touch with several of his fellow presidents in the M.C.A.U. and found them considering the same thing. After a motion by one of the alumni to drop all intercollegiate athletics failed, the trustees voted to concur in the faculty recommendation. Westminster had seen its last football team! The news hit the student body like a shockwave. Al- though rumors had been flying for the past week or so, no one could really believe that the college would take this drastic step. The Blue lay eleven had gone through an undefeated season in the fall of 1931. Only a 0-0 tie with William Jewell on a snow covered field in the final game marred their record. Six starters had made the Associated Press's M.C.A.U. All Star first team: guard lrley McClard, the Blue lay captain, tackle Red Blanton, halfback Norm Edmunds, end jim McClanahan, center lim Smith, and quarterback Billy Tolliver. Most of this great team would be returning. One team member recalls vividly the scene that week- end at The Greek's, a student hangout located on Court Street. There, before a packed house, Red Blanton, the team's captain-elect and one of the toughest tackles ever to don the Blue, stood on a table at the edge of the balcony toward the rear of the cafe. With impassioned oratory, he urged the assembled throng to rise up in pro- test and save the game. This they did, though perhaps not quite as vociferously as Blanton hoped. A petition quickly made the rounds asking that football be restored. ln order to cut costs it proposed that one coach be hired for all sports, season tickets be sold among the students, and no new equip- ment be bought. Student Body President Wallace Bowers presented this to the faculty at their May 20 meeting. They agreed to allow him to take it to the Board. At the same time, they appointed their own committee to consider whether football could be made to pay for itself and pre- sent its findings to the trustees. When the Board met ten days later, it refused to rescind its previous action. lt also decided to dispense with Stuber's services. Fortunately he secured the vacant post at Cape Girardeau Normal. Al- though there had been threats that most of the team would go with him, only four finally did so. -m.,e-QLXQQM My W V W ,, I if Hank lba is pictured third from the left.
