Furthermore, when this service has been at one institution, the color of this opinion becomes fairly deep and thus he sounds dogmatic. Anyone reading this will im- mediately realize that I loved my jobg I enjoyed being an educational leader as much as my capacities permitted. Westminster is one of the last remaining men's colleges and is strongly attached to a curriculum in the liberal arts. Since I was a product of a small liberal arts college I have caught the idea of liberating minds from ignorance, fear, and prejudice and appreciate the flavor of an educational program that seeks to cause men to think for themselves based on value judgments rather than just direct preparation for particular employment. So one of my greatest satisfactions is to have assisted in some slight degree, despite tremendous pressures to the con- trary, to see this college continue even more strongly a liberal arts in- stitution. But, since this is only a means to an end, my real joy is witnessing what has happened in the lives of some 3,500 young men who have made this their choice for higher education. The number who are making successes of themselves, not just with profitable careers, as important as that is, but also because of what I see them perfor- ming in trying to make the world a little better. Whether it be eleemosynary boards, school boards, church boards, or political service, Westminster men are widely and intensively represented. Another pleasing aspect is the fine atmosphere of intellectual stimulation received from colleagues on the faculty and board of trustees who insist that the level of learning be kept rigorous and demanding, yet at the same time challenging and interesting. The fact that 91W of our sophomores returned as juniors this past fall, in- dicates that we have motivated a substantial segment of our con- stituents and convinced them tand usj that our program is worthwhile. Of course there have been some frustrations, but I leave my official position on the whole with a sense of pride and a conviction that Westminster under its new ad- ministration will continue to prosper. Robert L. D. Davidson, President dedication R. L. D. Davidson The past academic year saw the completion of the administration of Robert L. D. Davidson as the fifteenth president of Westminster College-the longest tenure of any chief executive in the institution's history with 18 years of service. His two decades of leadership have guided the college through an era of unparalleled growth in the numbers of students and faculty, the development of new and imaginative educational programs, the construction of physical plant, and support through endowment and giving. During this time he encouraged constant self study of the institution by faculty and students in joint respon- sibility. He saw the return of the Honor System by student initiation to the college and gave it his full support..He es- tablished the Honors Dinner to recognize Westminster's top scholars each year. He helped pioneer the cooperative program with William Woods College which enabled it to become a four-year institution. One of President Davidson's most striking ac- complishments was the expansion of the campus to the north with the establishment of Churchill Quadrangle in 1958-1959 and then the later completion of Elizabeth Champ Auditorium in 1966. In addition the Phi Kappa Psi house and Sweazey and Weigle Halls were built in this area. Climaxing the building on the new north campus was the reconstruction of the Church of St. Mary, the Virgin, Aldermanbury, transplanted from London to Fulton asthe Winston Churchill Memorial and Library-an idea conceived and pushed to completion by President Davidson. ln addition to all of this, a new Science Center rose on the main campus as well as a new president's home in South Fulton. Washington West House and the old Science Hall were completely refurbished. ln addition to his service to Westminster, President Davidson served on numerous local, state, and national civic, educational, and religious boards. In all of this ac- tivity, he was never too busy to see students personally and to be concerned about their views on campus affairs. It is in deep appreciation for his friendship with and ser- vice to the Westminster community that we dedicate this 1973 Blue Jay to Robert L. D. Davidson. .SX if! Truman was an honorary alumnus and honorary member of the faculty of West- minster College. But more particularly he stood out as a world statesman, friend of freedom and equality both at home and abroad, and devoted admirer of this institution. His death on December 26, 1972, marked the end of a long and eminently useful life. Although thirty-five other men have shared with President Truman the honors and respon- sibilities of occupying the highest office in this land, few have come to that post under more try- ing circumstances or faced with the variety of awesome decisions, both immediate and long run, that he was called upon to make. That he responded well to the crises of his time, history has amply borne outg albeit several recent revisionist historians have questioned some of the United States' behavior in the development of the Cold War. The heritage which Harry S. Truman leaves us is a great one. In times of continuing stress, it is well to recall his remarks on the occasion of his Green lecture at Westminster in April, 1954, as the McCarthy era was drawing to a close: The cause of freedom both at home and abroad is damaged when a great country yields to hysteria. The way for us to spread democracy is to practice it ourselves. In times such as these, our colleges and universities have a very special obligation to maintain freedom of thought and inquiry. The precious freedoms for which Westminster College stands-freedom of thought and freedom of the human spirit-are our greatest strength in the world struggle in which we are involved. We can- not win our goals by abandoning our values. I urge you to be alert and bold in preserving and protecting our democratic freedoms. V. Z, -e A.. T vm Welcome to Westminster Westminster extends a warm welcome to the members of the Class of 1976 as they join an un- broken procession that extends back more than a hundred years. -Quoted from President Davidson in Student Handbook fit? They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. Coach Richard Ault has stated that Binggeli ' possibly has been Westminster's greatest track performer. He was selected four times to the District 16 NAIA Cross-Country All-Star team. He holds both the Indoor and Outdoor NAIA records in the one, three and six mile races. He also holds the following Westminster track records: two- mile in 9:06.5, three-mile in 13:51.2 and the six- mile in 30:59.8. Binggeli established Westminster records in Cross-Country in the four-mile, five-mile and 10,000 meter competition. 100 bmggell named athlete of year SOCCCI' Kneeling lL-Rl - Todd Wolfram, Larry Saenger, Binky Stanza, Bill Lodes, Pete Northway, Ed Rhomberg, Glen Carlson, Kim Figge Standing QL-Fil - Coach David Steinmeyer, Peter Graven, Joe Creech, Steve Welsh, Steve Lannigan, Dave Lannigan, Tom Knutsen, John MacMillan 2 SOCCER SEASON RECORD 6 wins 8 loss Westminster Oppgnem 5 Forest Park 1 O Meramac 10 5 State Fair 0 4 Central 3 O Washington University 4 1 Evangel 3 2 Wentworth 0 1 Lindenwood 0 1 Harris Teachers College 5 5 McKendree 0 O Blackburn 5 1 Greenville 3 St. Louis Tournament O Florissant Valley C,C. 4 0 S.l.U. Running his fourth year in the All-District championships, senior Fred Binggeli grabbed second place overall in the meet. ln his first time in the competition, Tim Shaw, a junior, came in fifth to make the final man in the top five man team. Overall the team has done an excellent job, not only in District 16 but in many invitationals with larger schools present, such as in the Greenville Invitational in which they tied Indiana Central for the cham- pionship. The Westminster Cross Country team may not have quanti- ty, yet this isn't necessary with the quality that our trackmen possess, which they have continued to ex- hibit meet after meet. The record for this year's Cross Country season speaks for itself as they compiled 13 wins and one loss. After Coach Ault won his sec- ond Coach of the Year title in four years he too agreed when he saidg My title was a result of the West- minster team winning, since the ti- tle usually is awarded to the coach of the winning team. Many times they would hit a winning streak as they did against illinois College, Principia, and the University of Missouri at Rolla. ll would seem the Blue Jays were really going strong, yet they would often slip back into their losing trend. Overall the season didnt turn out as well as many people had hoped as they ended the season with a season record of 13 wins 15 losses. There were several highlights in the season. One of these would have to be the Hose Hulman Tour- nament. At Terre Haute, Indiana the Blue Jays arrived and sweeped through the Bose Hulman Tourna- ment. Their first contest was against the host Rose Hulman, which they downed very convinc- ingly 82-66. In the title game, Prin- cipia gave a real battle before the Blue Jays finally came away with a 67-62 victory and tournament honors. The Blue Jays were placed un- der pressure most of the season with numerous strong and com- petitive teams on their schedule. Southern University, Missouri Bap- tist and the University of Missouri QRQ games were the real pressure games to the true Blue Jay Power. The game looks like football, but the players wear no pads. The plays look like soccer, but the players grab the ball and run. lt is the roughest game around. Yet, rugby is a gentleman's game. As much as any other sport, rugby is a team effort. The emphasis is placed on the club. What makes this club outstanding is the lack of college funds. Rugby is the only sport on the West- minster campus organized and financed by the players themselves. lt simply is a club organization and every member plays. The fall schedule proved dis- mal, with a 1-1 record. The West- minster Ruggers won their first game with a 10-0 victory over Rockhurst College of Kansas City. Hopes of a two game undefeated season were lost as lVi.U. triumph- ed over Westminster 20-0. Team Co-Captains Rich Kennedy and Buzz O'Brien have been playing regularly since their freshman days. And, like Rich and Buzz, most of the players learned how to play after joining. Yet, Rugby is not all rough stuff and no fun. Unlike any other American sport, the post-game parties and weekend sooials are a strong tradition, not mere byproducts of team acquaintances. The two separate teams constantly strive for togetherness of the club as well as unified play. Never did blood and beer mix so well. Unlike the major varsity sports with scholarship athletes, ruggers never quit, the clubg they just graduate. l120 polo Westminster has a Water Polo team? This appears to be the average Westminster student's re- ply after being confronted with the sport of water polo. Yes, West- minster does have a water polo team which just happens to be this year's Missouri Intercollegiate Champions 81 the Missouri Athletic Association Champion. Our Water Polo team has been coached by Ted Greenhouse since the club was first organized two years ago. As for any sport its first year of competition was poor. Our club had just been organized and was still young and inexperienced. This was a building year with a record of 1 win and 4 losses. Yet, Coach Greenhouse would develop his team in just two short years into a champion. The year 1972 rolled around and with it the Westminster College Water Polo Club. They were well trained and in excellent shape as they looked forward to the upcoming season. With the teams first win over Central Missouri State 13-3 there was no way of stopping them. Each oppo- nent they confronted appeared to go down to the deep end to drown in defeat. At the conclusion of the season, Coach Greenhouse's team found themselves on top with two championships and an excellent record of 10 wins and 2 losses. In just two short years Coach Greenhouse made Westmin- ster a Champion 'in water polo with just 3175.00 which was al- located to the club by the Stu- dent Government. lt's just phenomenal!!! ..,,.,,......f.-- :1ff i' ' Y. were: ' W. we 12 Aa sg Westminster 13 11 6 5 1 5 21 8 13 7 9 WATER POLO SEASON RECORD 9 wins 2 losses Central Missouri State U. P g It has often beensaid that your college years are the best ones of yourlife. Such truths-continuously present themselves for verification. As four years rapidly marches by it becomes increasingly difficult to determinelwhat specific incidents' make the college career so great. Certainly inthe final analysis it appears to be the culmination of ,every incident,.with thepicture now being completed, every detail on .the canvas addinglto the end result. 1 As I glance. back for the mo- ment at my picture loan however determine several -parts which I hold most dear.-One of -.these is learning. Learning not just from a book jbut from. people, their ideas andfideals. This I, would put as Westminster's greatest asset. ln the integration .of hundredsof value systems and interests of students and professors you become 'aware 'of the way others feel and why they feel that way. From this mixture you are able to present and develop your own values and set, them to work in your life. it : ,',' ff in Maybe simply an'eXtenfsio'n of this learning and growing process is friendship. Meeting with, rtalking to, and living with so many diverse attitudes, you increasingly grow to tolerate, understand, and accept' people for what' they are. And if possible, you try to show them a way you have found to more easily live life. That's what makes friends, listening, sharing, understanding. A Another truth that has been presented to me and. passed the test is the old cliche that you get out F Qi ffff I 146 of something what you put into it. Yet it seems that it has already sur- passed that point: Westminster has returned my efforts manyfold-She has multiplied my investment time and time again. I owe her more than can ever be repaid. The final touches to my college picture have now been added and I stand in awe and sur- prise that such an amateur could present such a work. Yet I have been the least of hundreds that have created this masterpiece: friends, teachers, and associates have done the real work. To these people l owe thanks that could never be sufficient. Speaking on New Politics of the 7O's, he addressed an audience in Champ Auditorium on Sunday and then spoke to a political science class. Mankiewicz said the McGovern campaign was 'old politics' - the campaign strategy which included going to the voter, exemplified by the McGovern door-to-door canvas by volunteers, and then getting out the vote on election day. The 'new politics'lincluded us- ing computers which produced 50 million 'personal letters' to voters by the Nixon campaign according to Mankiewicz. Computers could spot every left-handed surgeon in the United States for personalized letters, he said. Retail politics is the future trend. A campaign can present a candidate for President, so remov- ed by surrogates that the candidate never gets near the people: he can be packaged and sold to the elec- torate, he said. Such a campaign could elect a man to the presidency who had been dead for six years, using taped TV speeches, Mankiewicz said. He said Nixon understood the temper of the times in his cam- paign. For Americans it was not a time to fbring us together' but a time to 'leave us alone'. , In his talk sponsored by the Westminster Student Assembly, Mankiewicz pinned the defeat of Sen. George McGovern on the ouster of Sen. Thomas Eagleton from the Democratic ticket. Mankiewicz said that the Eagleton episode gave a great many per- sons in the country their first im- pressions of McGovern. The way the campaign began was fatal, and l'm not sure we ever came back. Some political writer said it didn't matter what Senator McGovern said after booting Eagleton, and l think that's largely true. When the voters were con- fronted with an unknown tMcGovernl, they stuck with what they had fNixonl even though they were not happy with him, Mankiewicz said. He went on to say if McGovern had moved swiftly to take Eagleton off the ticket or known of his health record before putting him on, it might have made a great difference in the outcome of the election. Mankiewicz said the affair in- troduced a large section of the electorate to McGovern, im- pressing them with McGovern handling a crisis with tumult and uncertainty. He said Nixon should have been put on the defensive in July and August. Instead of Nixon be- ing the issue, McGovern was the issue for a long, long time, Mankiewicz said. Nixon played on the racial fears of the country, he said. He exploited them very well. It was not an accident he inherited that Wallace vote. Nixon sensed a strong racial backlash, fears set against any further advancement for the blacks. When the President talks about bussing and says he wants neighborhood schools to be preserved it's not the same as talk- ing about preserving the neighborhood, Mankiewicz said. Mankiewicz said he spent election night with McGovern and was not surprized at the vote. I thought we'd do better in a couple of states, he said. I thought we'd win Wisconsin and Rhode Island and maybe Michigan. Mankiewicz blamed the heavy turnout in Republican suburbs and large cities such as New York for the defeat and said, it seemed Clear we were not getting out the vote where we needed it. r, 57 fi, V ..,' G if s Q -L E -.g I United States Senator Thomas Eagleton spoke at the Callaway County Courthouse. Mankiewicz, who joined the McGovern campaign in April of 1971, said he thought people were in general agreement with what McGovern was saying and wanted change, but they were not ready to entrust that change to McGovern. He said the electorate was no doubt afraid of a large defense budget. They see the insanity of it, but are afraid they will be out of a job, he said, so they stuck with Nixon. -ZQEFEQEH'-A Eifr 1 Mankiewicz said the Vietnam peace agreement announcement before the election was a hoax which stopped the Watergate cor- ruption issue dead in its tracks. He said the implications of the Watergate affair and the Soviet wheat deal had not affected the public as McGovern had hoped. The people did not rise to take issue with the corruption in the government because the feeling is that corruption in government is not surprizingj' he said. 153 James Tate, the first Henry ir ,l 'Xi-1wW.,,Lii,: ' 4 -,mf sg 'iigtgsgxypw f 4 55 if, fr P W 9 'EY ,vets . , 1 1 i ff ' 7 YLQFW - 4 4 ,X ,ri' f f r W K C X ffwfil ' ?TZ'W'iH-:fl-W T 57137, -- ,EW buaigr' X f r a ff' 'v '23 XE 4wwfzw1ewgQf,5,ffP:: fha - f fi r 5 ,M g,ff,iiJy,aL4ii , Q , , . s1eGW4,.,ff--,fmt My t 2 ,V ,,ff.f, Q X' - ,.,, M, -.,,a.,,,,,,, ,. , --.,a..,,r,,w.tiaW., .W ,,,. .,,,4v, ,Q ffsjl' V-M-rf L54 General Greer, of Ft. His lecture was sponsored by the Student Assembly and the Concert and Lecture Series. US's Toughest Customer Nader has been called everything from Muckraker to Con- sumer Crusader to Public Defender. His documented criticisms of government and in- dustry have had widespread reper- cussions on public awareness and bureaucratic power. He is, as Time Magazine noted, the US's Toughest Customer.
