The announce- ment this spring that he would succeedDr. Edward K. Williams as Dean of the College makes this tribute even more fitting, for in assuming this position, Dr. F, Brooke Sloss becomes the first Westminster alumnus to hold this post, A native of St. Louis, Dr. Sloss graduated from Westminster in 1938. He returned to this ,campus as instructor of mathe- matics in 1941, after receiving his Master of Science degree from Brown University. With the exception of time out for Navy service during World War ll and occasional leaves to complete his Ph.D. at Northwestern University, he has served Westminster continuously since that time. He became Chair- man of the Mathematics Department in 1946 and Director of Student Affairs in 1957 moving to the post of Assistant Dean in 1960. An avid sports enthusiast, Dr. Sloss coached the tennis team for many years during which Westminster had a long skein of consecutive conference championships. He also helped inaug- urate the Washington Semester program by serving as one of the faculty in residence at American University during its first year of operation. A former province chief of Omicron Delta Kappa, he has served as advisor to this group and other student organizations with great aplomb and equanimity over the years. Certainly not the least of his talents have been devoted to his courses in mathematics, where students have come to appreciate him as a personable, knowledgable, and fair-minded teacher. It is in deep appreciation for his friendship with and service -to the men of Westminster that we dedicate this'l969 Blue Jay to Dean F, Brooke Sloss. azmiimlxammxmiaw.,
