-.-.-.V - Since my arrival on this campus six years ago, I have been asked many times to tion, What is Westminster?', To query requires more than a word, paragraph, for Westminster is a of many varied components. To perhaps, something different, but I believe that we can all agree that it is a miraculous welding to- gether of the following ingredients. answer the ques- do justice to this a sentence, or a complex mixture each man it is, A PHYSICAL PLANT: Any col- lege is, of course, a group of buildings. It is stone and bricks, mortar and glass, grass and tennis courts, heating systems and class- rooms, bedrooms and offices - all of these. This is the aspect that most people think of first, but it is certainly not an adequate answer to the question at hand. A CURRICULUM: The curricu- 5 lum is, and must be, an integral 1 part of the college. In our par- ticular case, the curriculum is designed to teach scholars to think for themselves and to learn to ask the right questions, rather than to know all the answers. We believe that the liberal arts curriculum best satisfies this re- quirement and most effectively serves the purpose of improving the student intellectually and cul- turally. A FACULTY: A community of scholars is another prequisite for any college. Nothing so characterizes an institution as the dedicated persons who devote sacrificial lives to teaching. This group sets the course for the institution, regardless of how out- side influences may tug at the wheel. A STUDENT BODY: Another and equally necessary portion of the college community is the student body. It is a mixture of earnest scholars, would-be earnest scholars, intellectual dilettantes, social butterflies, academic risks, loafers, leaders, followers, conform- ists, non-comformists, and, all-in-all, a pretty good cross section of American life. Out of this group will come the leaders of society, whether they want to be or not. hat CSIITI Robert L. D. Davidson President - To 'sap-Arr-wt ' 'rvT'X1 f' A BOARD OF TRUSTEES: These men, the repre- sentatives of the legal owners of the college, are, likewise, a vital ingredient of the college. With enthusiasm and vigor they attempt to meet new de- mands and keep the old college sound and growing. IS PLANS AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE: Without this ingredi- ent, our Alma Mater might die on the vine. For, no matter how adequate the other ingredients may be, the survival of our old college hinges on its ability to meet the challenges of the future, as well as the present. Without a vision, the people perish. ALUMNI, FRIENDS, PARENTS, THE CHURCH, AND A HOST OF RELATED AGENCIES: These are also partial answers to our question of what the college is, but there is remaining one ad- ditional intangible factor which cannot be overlooked. Whether we label it the Xu QUANTITY, THE SPIRIT OF THE INSTI- TUTION, THE CHARACTER OF THE COLLEGE, or by some other title, it is present, and its influ- ence is keenly felt. inster? It is this nebulous component which has enabled Westminster to survive war, depression, and crisis upon crisis. Without it, there would be no West- minster. With its continuing influence upon us all, we shall be able to move toward a greater and more stable Westminster which will perpetuate the dream of over a century ago which caused the amalgamation of these many ingredients into The Great Small College . This, then, is my answer to the question What is Westminster? . With gratitude for this college and the many component parts which comprise it, let us rededicate ourselves to its objectives and strive for its continued service to the succeeding generations who knock at its doors. 5
