To perhaps, something different, but I believe that we can all agree that it is a miraculous welding to- gether of the following ingredients. answer the ques- do justice to this a sentence, or a complex mixture each man it is, A PHYSICAL PLANT: Any col- lege is, of course, a group of buildings. It is stone and bricks, mortar and glass, grass and tennis courts, heating systems and class- rooms, bedrooms and offices - all of these. This is the aspect that most people think of first, but it is certainly not an adequate answer to the question at hand. A CURRICULUM: The curricu- 5 lum is, and must be, an integral 1 part of the college. In our par- ticular case, the curriculum is designed to teach scholars to think for themselves and to learn to ask the right questions, rather than to know all the answers. We believe that the liberal arts curriculum best satisfies this re- quirement and most effectively serves the purpose of improving the student intellectually and cul- turally. A FACULTY: A community of scholars is another prequisite for any college. Nothing so characterizes an institution as the dedicated persons who devote sacrificial lives to teaching. This group sets the course for the institution, regardless of how out- side influences may tug at the wheel. A STUDENT BODY: Another and equally necessary portion of the college community is the student body. It is a mixture of earnest scholars, would-be earnest scholars, intellectual dilettantes, social butterflies, academic risks, loafers, leaders, followers, conform- ists, non-comformists, and, all-in-all, a pretty good cross section of American life. Out of this group will come the leaders of society, whether they want to be or not. hat CSIITI Robert L. D. Davidson President - To 'sap-Arr-wt ' 'rvT'X1 f' A BOARD OF TRUSTEES: These men, the repre- sentatives of the legal owners of the college, are, likewise, a vital ingredient of the college. With enthusiasm and vigor they attempt to meet new de- mands and keep the old college sound and growing. IS PLANS AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE: Without this ingredi- ent, our Alma Mater might die on the vine. For, no matter how adequate the other ingredients may be, the survival of our old college hinges on its ability to meet the challenges of the future, as well as the present. Without a vision, the people perish. ALUMNI, FRIENDS, PARENTS, THE CHURCH, AND A HOST OF RELATED AGENCIES: These are also partial answers to our question of what the college is, but there is remaining one ad- ditional intangible factor which cannot be overlooked. Whether we label it the Xu QUANTITY, THE SPIRIT OF THE INSTI- TUTION, THE CHARACTER OF THE COLLEGE, or by some other title, it is present, and its influ- ence is keenly felt. inster? It is this nebulous component which has enabled Westminster to survive war, depression, and crisis upon crisis. Without it, there would be no West- minster. With its continuing influence upon us all, we shall be able to move toward a greater and more stable Westminster which will perpetuate the dream of over a century ago which caused the amalgamation of these many ingredients into The Great Small College . This, then, is my answer to the question What is Westminster? . With gratitude for this college and the many component parts which comprise it, let us rededicate ourselves to its objectives and strive for its continued service to the succeeding generations who knock at its doors. 5 0 .-- .' Among other ac- tivities, they have contributed greatly to the organiza- tions on campus. Social life is always stressed at the SAE house, and this year several successful dances were held, including the annual Monte Carlo Panty, the Gay Nineties Party, and numerous Vic Dances. The SAE social service calendar has been filled with many admirable projects. In intramural activity, the Sig Alph teams have always been strong con- tenders, and this year they have provided a number of lettermen to fill Varsity positions. ,A N ,H,,,,,.:lV:.,Y W . 1---.rf 3 1 -A-,f,...V , , Y-fr - - -1- , Y --v' --,- ln the picture al right, Sig .-Xlphs and their duh-5 take part in the annual -pring Home Carlo Party which Con- 5' sisls of mock gambling and dancing l combined. Since its inception, the Chapter has stressed the develop- ment of a well-rounded chapter and the inclusion of every phase of fraaternity life in its activities. The Sigs have -always been strong in dramatic and vocal contests, winning the Westminster Revue two out of the last three years, and retiring the Motheris Day Sing Trophy last year. This year's intramurals find the Sigma Chi teams finishing well up on the lists. Socially, the Sig- ma Chi's have had a very successful year. Merited by sound leadership, they have attained due respect on the campus. f .. :di 513. . iii. Due to the loss of five seniors on last yearls conference champion- ship team, the Blue-,lays finished with a 7-18 record. Also, the ball club was hurt by grades at the semester, as two fine freshmen were forced to quit. The team never gave up and always gave all they had till the final whistle. Television's General Elec- tric College Quiz Bowl was used for a format, and joint faculty-student coopera- tion was instrumental in providing teams and competitive questions. Going into- a four-game series with Culver, the ,lays had compiled a 7 - 1 conference -record, their only loss coming at the hands of William Qlewell, by the score of 1-0. After winning the second game of that series and a double victory over Cen- tral, the Jays had only to split with Culver fwho had a 6 - 2 recordj to re- tain their championship. Dave Smith, ss .7 i- Vg -.., cg.-5. tty On Thursday, May 16, Culver jour- neyed to .Fulton to encounter the Jays. Superb pitching and excellent fielding spelled doom for the Jays, as Culver swept the doubleheader 4- 2 and 2 -0. With their backs to the wall, West- minster travelled to Culver,- needing to take both games of adoubleheader to win the conference. In the first game, which was marred by Jay errors, Cul- ver executed a perfect squeeze play in the top half of the seventh inning to bring the winning tally across the plate. The golf team can well be proud of its per- formance this spring: a respectable 5-3 record climaxed by an excellent showing in Conference. Dan Wilkins, Dow Heimbrook and Bob Bloom composed the nucleus with freshmen Frank Kirk and John DesJardins playing closely behind. With .4-O2 strokes, Westminster dropped the first match to a well-seasoned Missouri squad. However, the same total 'easily defeated Central College, and the following week 390 strokes were I M HANDBALL needed to put down Drury. These accomplish- ments, however, offered no consolation to a sur- prising upset by William Jewell at Excelsior Springs, where rough greens and strong winds definitely favored the home squad. Dow Heim- brook led the team to wins over Rolla and Mis- souri Valley the following week. Meeting Missouri on our home course, hopes were high, but so were too many scores, and the Jays bowed in defeat. Westminster was favored to win the Confer- ence title and did so by 20 strokes. Dan Wilkins, probably the finest golfer in the area, was picked for medalist and won it with Heimbrook two strokes behind.
