Davidson, President of the college. As the guiding light of Westminster, Dr. David- son leads a varied and hectic life. His office, always open to students, is busy making plans for the future of Westminster, while at the same time solidifying the college's past. Often the question What does a college presi- dent do? is asked. At Westminster the answer is more than obvious. The excellence of Dr. Davidson's performance is the reason that he is second only to the dedication in this book. The principles and ideals which the editors and staff followed in the preparation of your yearbook, the ideals of democracy, fair play, and impartial ob- iective presentation of student life, are those which the leader of this institution has always championed. The picture above shows Dr. Davidson seated in- formally with his family in Washington West House, a moment all too rare in his crowded schedule. if .M mln W I B ,l 1' ' -O 2 jineins D -r A , 1, I Q iff, ei 9 :V .f . 085 . Mr. Gordon, on the left, is the Registrar of the college and consequently finds him- self an integral part of student affairs as does Dr. Sloss, on the right, who serves as Dean of Men and advisor to the Inter-Fraternity Council and Student Council. Mr. Schuessler finds he has his hands in everyone's pockets, serving as Business Manager of the college. To- gether, they form an awesome trio. ,E Y., , .. Dean Dahl reclines in a wheelchair following the Dad's Day accident in which he sustained a broken hip. The Dean found his forced vacation provided him with spare time in which he could catch up on some of his reading. Mr. Dahl sprang quickly back into action late in the year and completely resumed his teaching duties second semester. in W siiszr :ms .ws around the Churchill Quadrangle. Development. How soon the future? This seems to be the question these administrators ask as they pose before an artistic conception of a future Westminster. Planning to ln crease enrollment to an estimated 700 students in the next few years, the college has hopes for a new chapel, a new science building and additional buildings Lounging around the ideal of the fu ture are Mr. Keel, Director of Admissions Mr. Humphreys, Assistant to the Pres: dent, Mr. Marshall, Alumni Secretary and Mr. Stinson, Assistant Director of PHILOSOPHY AND BIBLE A wide variety of courses is of- fered by Dr. Niles, Dr. Gates, the head of the department, Dr. Hauer, and Dr. Sengel in the department of Bible and Philosophy, as Reli- gion is one of the important phases of Westminster life. PSYCHOLOGY The theories of Freud, Jung, and Dewey suddenly become less am- biguous to aspiring young head- shrinkers under the expert guidance of Mr. Fuller, the head of the de- partment, and Mr. Reigel, while Dr. McAdam is more concerned with preparing his students for a teaching career. ,, gee - sa es is HISTORY NapoIeon's troops and the fight- ing men of the contederacy clash head-on while our two learned his- torians, Dr. Jones, the head of the department, and Dr. Parrish, oc- casionally disagree on the respec- tive merits of such notable men as F. D. R. and Dwight D. Eisenhower. ENGLISH Resembling nothing so much as six iovial Canterbury pilgrims straight out of Chaucer, our English department seems to be tremendously eriioying one of Dr. Randolph's quotable quotes. Grouped around the table in the Jordan room of Reeves library, H they are: Mr. Fehrenbach, Dr. Wilkerson, Mrs. Randolph, Dr. Randolph, the head of the department, Mr. Fernandez, and Dr. Bleifuss. ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Whether one is interested in supply and demand curves or the difference between one's credits and debits, he will find a prodigious amount of courses available in the department of econorgcs and business administration. Mr. Weld, Mr. Cave, Dr. Ellis, Dr. Bosch, and Mr. Larsen, the head of the department, gleefully offer this subiect matter. POLITICAL SCIENCE Beneath the benevolent gaze of Missouri's favorite son, Mr. Kerr, ..,-, BICJLOGY Westminster's Biology building is frequently invaded by vast platoons of frogs, sharks and other assorted delicacies. Their various anatomies are capably identified by Dr. Elrod, Dr. Levin, and Dr. Day, the head of the department. Dr. Horton, the head of the de- partment, and Dr. Wei browse through clippings of contemporary political significance in the Church- ill room of Reeves library. it , THE LIBRARY Dr. Hillard and Dr. Morrison relax in their citadel of knowledge, Reeves library. These two erstwhile bibliophiles competently preside over the brisk flow of books which crosses their desks each day. vfrzggs' 7 J ' R.O.T.C. STAFF Today's students are tomorrow's army. The Westminster R.O.T.C. Staff makes sure that at least some of those army leaders are capable and intelligent and possess out- standing qualities of leadership. Above, enjoying a coffee break, are: Lieutenant Colonel Andersen, Sergeant Householder, Sergeant Scott, Lieutenant Colonel Wardner, the PMSTp Captain Mitchum, Sergeant Huffman and Sergeant Prather. -an new A survey conducted this year reveals that our very talented language department has at its command fourteen foreign languages Professors of the Germanic languages are Mr. Gersh, Mrs. Alexander CRussianl and Dr. Sharton, the head of the department, while Mr. Vargas, Mrs. Fess, Dr. Fess, Mr. Gordon, Dr. Hoerber, and Dr. Artiles teach the Romance Languages and the Classics. 4 LANGUAGES I SOCIOLOGY M .psi Population, statistics, theory, the family, and social psychology are but a few of the areas covered by Dr. Alexander, the head of the department, and Dr. Matthews. Illlllilli II Ill ....... Iihllrlsi l 1 . IA el ll. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Mr. Flynn, Mr. Kimbrell, the head of the department, and Mr. Kanehl are three good reasons why Westminster consistently turns out first-rate teams. CHEMISTRY Enlightenment in the organic and inorganic nature of the universe is provided in ample doses by Mr. Schaeffer, Mr. Ollivier, and Dr. McCreight, the head of the department. SECRETARIAL STAFF Miraculously grouped together in one single picture are our girls, Westminster's unsung heroines who keep the business of the college flowing so smoothly and efficiently. Although you may seldom see them in action Cthey may be frequently surprised at the Student Union on break, howeverl, let's face it, fellas, we iust couldn't get along without em. PHYSICS AND MATHEMATICS After all the female pulchritude exhibited above, it may be rather difficult to fasten one's attention on the contemplative group pictured at left. Seemingly lost in the higher realms of probabilities and permutations, these three gentlemen fre- quently become much more dynamic in the classroom. They are: Mr. Winters, Head of the Physics Department, Mr. Barrow, and Mr. Chen. - ,,-W MAINTENANCE STAFF They may not come to work in white shirts and ties, but this ruggecl looking group is as important to the proper func- tioning of the college as any other de- partment on campus. Under the expert supervision of Harry Davis, this compe- tent crew enioys an outstanding reputa- tion for getting things done, whether it be replacing a broken window, unstop- ping a plugged sewer, or generally keep- ing the physical appearance of the campus in its usual tip-top shape. The last year that a Westminster team won the MCAU crown was in 1939. lt was a long wait for followers of basketball at Westminster, and for five graduating sen- iors, Rich Autry, Curly O'Byrne, Dale Ocheskey, Ken Quest, and Dave Wright, it was the fulfillment of a goal set four years ago. The Westminster Five, coached by E. F. Kimbrell, boasted a 15-6 record follow- ing the completion of the regularly scheduled season, but two defeats at the hands of William Jewell prevented the Blue Jays from traveling to Kansas City to participate in the NAIA. It is the purpose of this week to provide students with a specific opportunity to devote themselves to their faith and at the same time learn more about it. This year's platform speaker was the Rev. Dr. George E. Sweazey of the Webster Groves Presbyterian Church who spoke at four morn- ing convocations. The Rev. Mr. George Chauncey was the discussion leader, with the two men together leading seminar groups and giving private counsel to those students desiring it. Gllnsing the ing long- The saddest moment for your yearbook editors this year was that awaited moment when the entire book was finally put to bed and we could breathe a bit easier at last. We had a lot of fun putting this book together and we only hope you enjoyed reading it half as much as we did working on it, The late nights and early mornings slaving over layouts and copy, the last-minute frantic rush to meet a deadline, the moments ot sudden inspira- tion and the moments of utter cleiection were all dedicated to putting out a book of which we could be proud and one which would be something of special value to you in later life. A yearbook is the total product of many people working closely together. All the organizations, fraternities, taculty members, and students on campus cooperated admirably in every possible way. We would like to thank, in particular, Mr. Applebaugh for his many fine- quality photographs which are so important to a yearbook, .lack Marshall, our yearbook advisor, and Dick Roughton, who worked so hard when one of us was away in Washington second semester. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Fern O'Neal, representing Inter-Collegiate Press, our publisher. Fern came to Fulton on a collect long-distance phone call every time we were in trouble, and hosted a very memorable after- Christmas work party.
