A yearbook can he considered as a mirror of the school it represents. I only hope that the image I have produced is a clear one and successfully portrays Westminster College. Many things were left out due to space limitations but nevertheless I feel sure that the subjects and pictures herein are of a sufficiently wide-spread nature so as to adequately and purposefully fulfill the requirements of the Blue Jay. Many thanks are due to my faithful staff, Mr. Applehaugh for his pic- tures, Mr. Hook of Myers Yearbook Company, Mr. Jack Marshall, faculty advisor, ,Iohn Cromwell, Dick Metz, and especially to Business Manager and Assistant Editor Jim Lacy. The hook would not he possible without such competent help. I I If in some future year a member of the class of '59 runs across this Blue Jay and it reminds him of his college days and some of its lighter moments, then this book, to me, will be a success. Boasting a new house, the Sigma Chis have not been content to rest on their laurels and have, throughout the year, demonstrated a progressive attitude that has gotten them many new honors and campus-wide recognition. This year the Sigma Chis won the coveted West- minster Revue Trophy for the skit they submitted. Socially, the Sigma Chis had a delightful Pajama Party in addition to numerous Vic Dances. All told, the Sigma Chis can look forward with a great deal of anticipation to a truly successful year and a position of respect on the campus that is merited by sound leader- ship and a hard working attitude. 5 1 ,f rf ' K Founded: sigma chi - 1855 Delfa Tau - 1949 OFFICERS Counsel Tom Lake Pro-Counsel Asa Willmourn Quaestor Jim High! Their conference record was 9-3 while their overall record was 15-5. The season highlight was the play-off game between the two second place teams, Westminster and William Jewell. It was held on February 26 to determine which team would meet Culver-Stoclo ton in a best-two-out-of-three series for the right to represent the conference in the N.A.I.A. tourna- ment. Jewell edged by the Jays in this contest by the score of 69-67. Coach Eugene Kimbrell Coach Kimbrell is an alumnus of Westminster College graduating in the class of 1920 and returning as a coach in 1929. After graduation he received his Master's Degree in Physical Education at Columbia University. He then came to Westminster as Professor of Physical Education, Athletic Director, and basketball coach. He has coached on our cam- pus for 30 years and compiled a record of 228 wins and 164 losses, in conference play. Coach Kimbrell received one of the highest honors that can be conferred upon a basketball coach six years ago when he was presented the Helms Hall of Fame Award. This was the first award made in the National Association of Inter- collegiate Athletics. Kimhrell was one of the five C0aCl1eS to receive this award out of 400 coaches representing smaller colleges and universities which make up the N-A-I--'L ix. Agar' ' Coach Harold Flynn Coach Flynn came to Westniinster in 1954 after four years of coaching at Barry, Illinois, High School. After serving during the war between 1943-1946, Coach Flynn resumed his education at Culver-Stockton College, graduating in 1950. At Culver-Stockton, he played varsity basketball, football and baseball. In basketball, he was an all-conference selec- tion and captained the team in 1950. The varsity swimming team this year ended up with a 2-6 record. However, with all its members returning next year, it will undoubtedly put forth a much -better showing. Although the team was limited in members, Coach Kanehl is hoping for a bigger turn- out next year. The top point scorers this year were Mike Ives, freshman, Mike Wood, freshman, Bucky Krieger, sophomore, Mike Gooding, juniorg and Harry Wood, junior. Varsity swim- ming is a relative newcomer to the varsity sports on the Westminster campus and should in future years rank among the top in the conference. Coach Ray Kanehl graduated from the University of Kansas in 1927. He then coached at a high school in Wich- ita, Kansas, for 16 years. In 1943 he returned to the University of Kansas as assistant in Physical Education and as the coordinator of the Army and Navy programs. He was head track coach at Kansas from 1944 until 1947. In 1948, Coach Kanehl went to Drury College and spent the next ten years there as head track coach, di- ifii rector of intramurals, and assistant basketball coach. This year at Westminster Coach .K Kanehl has taken over as coach in wrestling, swimming and track. 83 ,.,...,-....,. .e.. ,....0.... -,-.........g... 5.,,,.... ....-...--,...,,..,...,.......-..
