He has a genuine feeling for each one of them and has become a close friend to many of them. It is because of this devotion, not only to education, but to people that makes him stand out in our minds. Jim, you have been an advisor, a profes- sor, but most importantly a friend. For this we sincerely thank you and dedicate this yearbook to you. God Bless. Dr. James J. C. Washabaugh. In 1956 he assumed the position of head coach until 1968. In those years, the Titan teams compUed some of their best records, as well as becoming NAIA State Champions and earning the right to go to Kansas City. Then in 1968, Mr. Ridl moved on to the University of Pittsburgh to coach the Panther Basketball team. Now in 1976, we say welcome back Buzz, our Alumni Director and special friend. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA New Pool — New Opportunities Olympic Gold Medalist Micki King, physical education instructor at the United States Air Force Academy, was the featured speaker at dedication ceremonies February 28, for West- minster ' s New Natatorium and Memorial Field House Expansion. While addressing more than 500 alumni, students and friends. Miss King stressed the need and importance of sports in today ' s hving. Her charge to the crowd was, You have an obligation to share this fine facility an obligation to take care of it and not abuse it, and finally an obligation to use it. Sharing the dedication platform with Miss King were President Earland I. Carlson, the Honor- able Judge John L. Miller, Dr. Robert E. Lauter- bach, C. G. Buzz Ridl, Dr. Harold Burry, Dr. George R. Hart, Michael F. Shaffo, and Miss Maijorie Walker. SITE OF NEW COLLEGIATE SWIMMING POOl AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION FACILITIES C. ROBERT BUCHANAN e ASSOC. ARCHITECT JOHN G. RUHLIN CONST CO. Everytime I went out on stage, I felt a warmth all around me; I belonged; I was needed. The audience can sense that. I think that was part of the suc- cess of Fiddler. We really were a family! It is comedy but not the kind we ' re used to seeing. It wants to be amusing and upsetting both. It wants — be- cause the people in it are — to be funny and a Httle terrifying. And above all, it wants to be a vision of a world with tears but without tragedy, with passion, pain and funny things all caught in bright clear comic light. Ives, Cuff, Crall best speak- ers ... The political awakening we receive through the convention is for some startling and disturbing while for others common and almost expected. Per- haps we learn one important lesson through the actions of the state of Alabama — UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL. What is a mock convention? A learning experience? a political science lab? a fun time with friends? a once in a life time chance to be a politician? The best ex- perience at Westminster College. 25 Excitement, Anticipation, Exhaustion The nitty-gritty of adopting a platform and finally nomi- nating a Presidential candidate brings excitement to the convention. Who can forget the arguments for and against aid to the elderly or the more heated debate over abortion? The speeches by delegates, Ives, Koenig, Jones, Georgiadis, and Kairys pour forth, sometimes coercing us, always reminding us to think, but steadfastly demand- ing a solid workable platform. Spirited interjections by delegate Sabachinni keep us giggling. 10 o ' clock Tuesday evening, the long awaited and much anticipated nominations begin. Alabama leads the way with George Wallace while Alaska yields to Washington and Scoop Jackson is placed on the ballot. The candi- dates number 18 in all and the spirited demonstrations show evidence of the delegates taking an opportunity to walk around. Roll call votes drag on through the night. Round one. We face each problem as it occurs with enough confidence in ourselves and others and flexibihty in our attitudes to carry it through to a solution. I plan to see that this pattern of open mindedness and flexibihty continues. And, in the end, come grad- uation day, I sincerely hope that the dorm is still standing. P.S. GRADUATION DAY - MAY 30, 1976 FAREWELL CLASS OF 158 I Four years gone in a flash. As we sit under the canvas, sweating, hoping we will not faint from the heat or fall asleep from boredom, we have a chance to remember and to think ahead. At last the moment of truth arrives and one by one we hear our names announced (many of them butchered). We take our diploma and step out into the sunUght. Now we can add another chapter to the story of our life — Graduate, West- minster College. Job well done, Amen. 159 Final Thoughts from the Editor ARGO Office Dear Mom, Believe it or not, the AGRO ' 76 is completed. I know we never expected this miracle to take place, but I had some terrific staff members who were really dedicated to their jobs, especially the emergency staff and the 180 pages are now a dream come true. I know people will complain about the book, but we all have worked hard, sometimes too hard and I know the book will reflect our effort. Of course, I also understand that those who complain the most are the people who never lifted a finger to help us. I have to laugh when I read some of the picky details tha t upset people. If only they would realize that about one hour of concentrated work goes into each page. That does not include the time involved in setting up, taking, developing and printing the pictures. Add an extra hour to the original time and the total per page is two hours. The year hasn ' t all been hard work. Remember when I told you about our basketball team and how we beat the Phi Taus? There were also the two allnighters to finish deadlines and our race to the Neshannock Post Office. Who would believe we made it to New Castle in six minutes? There are many people I have to thank for their help. Mr. Buquo, Mr. Sands in the Business Office, Dr. Badal, who kept my spirits for the book alive with his witty ideas, the Riverside Office Practice Class who helped type notices, C. T. Miller, who had the patience of a thousand angels when I had to make a decision, Deb, Rob, Terry, and Suzanne, my editors, Pat, Chuck, Dave, Bart, George, Bob, Cindy, Martha, and Denny, who offered their time unselfishly, learned eagerly and listened so patiently when the going got rough. Finally, thanks Mom for the encouragement to see me through all of this. Dad, we made it, I know you would be proud, too. Thanks to all for the memories, Shirley P.S. My challenge to next year — overcome the apathy that is engulfing most of Mother Fair, strive for quality, produce as good a yearbook as the ARGO ' 76, and be happy. Good luck. Barb. 160 Hail, hail to thee, Our Mother Fair, Westminster, Thy sons thy name with rev ' rent homage greet; While rings our song within thy sacred portals, Fresh wreaths we twine and lay them at thy feet. Long may she live. Our Mother Fair Westminster! Fling to the breeze her banner White and Blue! Halls of our fathers, Home of hallowed mem ' ries. Our Alma Mater, Glorious, Grand and True.
