It ' s time to examine a new yearbook — to smile wryly at the obvious imperfec- tions and to scrutinize the less ap- parent ones. You will notice, please, that there are two parts to this book. Although they are both ARGO, 1972, they are quite different in style and content. The people at Westminster are also different in style and content. This yearbook is designed so that any person who is polarized at either end of the philosophy of year- books spectrum may keep the vol- ume of his choice and disgard the other. This book is not merely an at- tempt to appease the entire cam- pus. The Argo-staff wishes, instead, that you will read each volume care- fully before declaring either a waste of money. Volume I contains what you ex- pect to see in a yearbook — the por- traits, the groups, the sports, the ads. It begins on the opposite page. 2 Argo 1972, Volume 1 Contents Administration 6 Faculty 10 Sports 30 Seniors 54 Senior Index 70 Underclassmen 74 Groups 86 Greeks 110 Advertisements 136 Closing 144 This volume will try to depict the everyday life and activities of the majority of Westminster ' s 1600 students. It will be a picture not unlike that of so many other small colleges around the coun- try. Still, this picture should not be scoffed at because of its ap- parent mundaneness or its con- formity. It is a concept of life as it is in 1972, but ever changing. Study this volume carefully. It represents the outward display of the inward changes that take place in the make-up of a student. Long ago, the college fathers decided that sporting excellence was the best way to put their school on the map and they succeeded. Even today, that tradition is car- ried on by various individuals, whether or not they belong to any organized school team. Football WESTMINSTER 26 MARIETTA 0 The Titans stretched their three-season win streak to 16 as Gene McNamara passed to Rog- er Price for two touchdowns, ran for another himself and di- rected a balanced attack that put scores on the board in every quarter. Joe Veres, who ac- counted for the final TD. led a devastating ground attack. 32 mm WESTMINSTER 21 SUSQUEHANNA 6 Susquehanna, the last team to beat Westminster, back in 1969, fell after a tough defensive battle. Interceptions set up all three Ti- tan scores with Mark Acerni ac- counting for two TDs and Veres scoring the other one. WESTMINSTER 25 LYCOMING 13 Veres had a great day, running for 170 yards and three TDs, but the Titans made a few defensive mistakes and Lycoming nearly carried the day. John Ebersber- ger ' s field goal added the other Titan points. WESTMINSTER 34 atWAYNESBURG 6 McNamara fired four touch- down passes, two to Price and one each to Acerni and Veres. The Titans, on their first road trip, were explosive, and the de- fense was supurb. WESTMINSTER 45 at JOHN CARROLL 13 The President ' s Athletic Con- ference champs had a tough af- ternoon, as Westminster rolled to a 45-0 lead on the passing of McNamara and alert defensive play. The Titans had six intercep- tions (including a 47 yard romp by defensive tackle Mike Annarel- la) and three fumble recoveries. WESTMINSTER 42 atGENEVA 13 Geneva ' s best team in a dec- ade, ranked ninth in the NAIA, put up a tough fight in the first half, but fell before the defending champions when the Titans put on a devastating third quarter exhibition. Two TD runs by Veres, followed by two McNamara bombs to Price finished the Gold- en Tornado. Earlier, McNamara had hit Mark Connolly and Price. The win climaxed Westminster ' s second straight undefeated season. WESTMINSTER 50 CARNEGIE-MELLON 0 After a slow start, the Titans exploded as McNamara passed for scores to Price, Veres and Bill Cole. Joe McCaw turned in a nifty 58 yard punt return for another score. The game was the first one since 1966 in which CMU failed to score. WESTMINSTER 28 at CARTHAGE 28 (Westminster declared winner by statistical advantage. NAIA Divi- sion M Semifinal National Championship.) The Titans outplayed the na- tion ' s leading offensive team, but had to come from behind to tie the score with 3:19 remaining. McNamara hit Price on a 16 yard pass and Ebersberger split the uprights for the extra point, throwing the game to the NAIA Rules Committee for a decision. The team with the most penetra- tions of the opponents 20-yard line (Westminster) got the win. The Titans had scored earlier on a 63-yard McNamara to Dave Mil- liron pass, a seven yard run by Veres and a spectacular 95-yard fake quick kick and pass play from Price to Milliron. Annarella was chosen the most valuable lineman and Veres the most valu- able back of the game. WESTMINSTER 14 at CAL LUTHERAN 30 California Lutheran erupted for 23 points in the final quarter, coming from behind to de-throne the national champion Titans and to begin their own reign as the NAIA Divis ion II kingpin. Westminster struck back after Cal. Lutheran scored first, tying the game on a 37-yard pass-run by Veres from McNamara. Early in the final quarter, Westminster broke the deadlock with a 56- yard McNamara to Price bomb. However, the ensuing kickoff saw the Kingsmen take the kick down the field, 95 yards, for a TD. The momentum had swung to Cal. Lutheran. 9 A fake field goal put the Kings- men ahead, 21-14. and the Titans were forced to play catch-up ball. Westminster had the edge in yar- dage gained, 348-221, but those gams were negated by eight turn- overs, four of them in that final, fateful quarter. The loss not only ended the Titan ' s reign atop the NAIA ratings, but terminated Coach Harold Burry ' s personal streak at 24 straight wins. A month later. Dr. Burry, who had been head coach for twenty years, announced his resignation from that spot, to concentrate on the Titan athletic directorship. Joe Fusco was named to succeed the man who had become a small college legend. 37 . poP, Basketball 1971-72 TITAN CAGE LOG WC OPPONENT 70 Alliance W 68 76 Carnegie-Mellon W 63 89 Waynesburg W 72 105 St. Vincent W 55 96 atOtterbein L 104 70 Clarion L 75 70 at Alliance L 73 59 at Pittsburgh L 78 64 Grove City L 68 72 at Waynesburg L 74 51 Youngstown L 74 89 Indiana W 86 80 at Wash. Ray Ondako, the school ' s 4th head coach in the past five years, led the Titans to a 12-10 record — good by most college stand- ards, but mediocre by Westmins- ter criteria. Yet, there were positive notes. Ondako decided early in the sea- son to go with a youth program, to rebuild the shattered recruit- ing program and to inject his own ideas on playing strategy. 38 i i V Titan Basketball Team — FRONT ROW: Dan Hecker, Andy Young. Having brought juniors Fred Rothen and Tom Ritchey with him when he came to West- minster from Knoch High, where he took that school into the PIAA state playoffs, Ondako added ju- niors Sam Males, Gary Rice and Bill Cress to complete his starting five. Freshman Don Tylinski was the first sign that the recruiting pro- gram had been revitalized. The 6- 3 forward stepped right into the varsity games and pointed the way. And Ondako managed to land an even more promising eager for next season . 40 il Cross-Country Team KNEELING: Ed Halusic. Chuck Fisher, Don Andree, Matt Flora. Fusco ' s charges remained true to form, however, and dropped the other six meets on their card. There were bright spots, though. Captain John Ble- witt, in his junior year, had a personal record of 6-1, and he did it despite a physical handicap. Apparently the trip proved beneficial, for upon re- turning, the Westminster duffers proceeded to rack up nine victories in team competition while tying once and dropping just one match. Not all of the baseball Titans were as green as the grass that they played on. Joe Veres and Darryl Jones carried the club much of the season and Jones led the team with his .406 batting aver- age. In fact, Jones was so good that the New York Yankees took him in the annual player draft and signed him to a professional contract. Westminster is no exception, for the Greek system is alive and thriving in New Wilmington. The ARGO staff thanks all the Greek organizations who put forth an effort to produce lively, interesting group photographs. Special thanks go to Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and Sigma Nu fraternity for the extra time and advance preparation re- quired for their photos. The ARGO regrets that not all Greek organizations felt com- pelled to turn in their photo iden- tifications. They were all given equal opportunity to accomplish this task. Nothing in this volunne should have surprised you much, so if you count yourself among those who don ' t like their money used for grand surprises you should be relatively satisfied. I think, and you may wish to stop here alto- gether. For those who appreciate even untrained efforts at creativi- ty in communication, however, the best is yet to come. For the Argostaff. though. Vol- ume I of this book represents the most frustrating and unglamo- rous work experiences. My sin- cerest thanks go out to the staf- fers who stayed around even through my most violent dead- line traumas — to Betsy and Cin- dy, who were reliable when I needed someone to rely on. and to James who somehow con- vinced me that I shouldn ' t scream at him even when I should have, and to Steve, who took so much hassle and was still my friend. There are many oth- ers. In fact, this year ' s staff was quite large by comparison. Thank you all — Rich, Cathy. Marti. Eric. Ginny. Sharon, Donna, Evann. Carol. Kip. Sue. Jerry. William . . .
