6 The ruins of himself! Now worn away with age, Yet still majestic in decay. — Homer 15 !3 So rolls the changing year, and so we change; Motion so swift, we know not that we move. — Dinah Craike 19 The highest compact we can make with our fellow is, — Let there be truth between us two forevermore . . . It is sublime to feel and say of another, I need never meet, or speak, or write to him; we need not reinforce ourselves or send tokens of remembrance; I rely on him as on myself; if he did thus or thus, I know that it was right. Emerson — ESSAYS ■. And that inverted Bowl they call the Sky, Whereunder crawling coop ' d we live and die, Lift not your hands to it for help — For it impotently moves as you and I. 26 4 « ' Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendour in the grass, Of glory in the flower; We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind. Wordsworth — ODE There is no more reason to believe that man descended from some inferior animal than there is to believe that a stately mansion has descended from a small cottage. — W. J. There was no razzle- dazzle style to their play, though surprise was one of their favorite weapons. They took a ferocious pride in their de- fense, despite an offensive unit that could bury the best out- fits in the country. Everything about them reflected an in- tense humility eminating from confidence in their ability to temporarily suppress their individuality and coordinate their efforts for a common purpose. When they took the field, they almost seemed to grow larger and more formidable. They carried into each contest the name of a school that had gained national recognition for its athletic excellence, but they played each game as if fame rode on its outcome. Through eight straight regular season contests they played their hearts out. A rating system secured a berth for them in the post season national playoffs, and they proceeded to bring home the NAIA National Championship. The friends of Westminster College can justifiably be p roud of the team ' s performance. Coach Burry ' s record of five unbeaten seasons and only thirty losses in nineteen years is one of the finest to come to my attention, and I am sure it is indicative of the leadership being provided for the students of Westminster. Westminster College head basketball coach Ray Onda- ko ' s first campaign at the helm of the Titans, this past 1 970- 71 season, must be termed a success. Final mark charted by the Blue and White read 13 victories against 10 defeats. Significant to this record, how- ever, are facts that a full seven of the ten losses came to recognized big time or small college powers, and four of the ten came by less than ten points. Two bright spots stand out in the past season. At mid- year the Titans ran a hot streak to win six of seven con- tests at one stage. A rather easy win over Washington and Jefferson 79-68, followed by an easier one over Alliance 91-74, preceded a three point loss to Saint Vincent. But Westminster then rebounded to defeat Bucknell, Waynesburg 91-82, Allegheny 74-69, and Geneva 76-66, the latter three away. Then came the final six frays of the campaign, with the Blue and White breaking even. Wins over Saint Vincent 71-63 and Susquehanna 94- 83 — back to back — and the season finale over Geneva 85- 71 were offset by their loss to Slippery Rock 75-69 and the two to Pitt, the worst of the two 62-41 . Westminster kept up its traditional home court mastery again this year, losing only twice at Memorial Field House, to Youngstown and to Pitt, while winning nine. They did not do as well on the road, however, winning four but dropping eight. Titan Basketball 1970-71 136 The team presented a balanced scoring attack with four men within 1 1 points of each other, no single player pro- vided game after game consistency. Sophomore Sam Males, without a doubt the most ef- fective sixth man on anybody ' s roster, emerged as the lead- ing scorer with a 12.5 average. Senior co-captain Gary Brown, the team ' s morale and floor leader, followed at an even dozen. Right behind him was another sophomore, Fred Roth- en, at 11.7 and the other senior co-captain, Randy Huey, at 11.5. Brown set a new team record as he tallied 41 mark- ers at Waynesburg, more than any other Titan had ever scored in an away game. Although the Blue and White held their own in re- bounding this season, it was not by much as the best indi- vidual averages in this department were charted by Rothen at 7.9 and junior transfer Ray Bridge from Clemson at an even seven. Rothen posted the best single game effort, 16 against Geneva. Harold Burry flatly denied having January Approaches; A Westminster First by Glennah Ruiz-Valera As the first January Term at West- minster approaches, students and faculty are showing great anticipation and excitement, which makes us wonder just what the campus will be like during January. This is the first time anything like this has happened in Westminster, so undoubtedly there will have to be adjustments as different con- tingencies appear. Nevertheless, we are going to try and give you a pre- view of what WC will be like next month. Although registration for January has already been completed, there is still a drop-add period coming. MORE Force hint ' a A green drop-add card can be picked up at the registrar ' s office next week. Students actually dropping a course to add another (remember, only phys. ed. can be taken simul- taneously with another course during January) must get the signature of both the instructor whose course he is dropping and the instructor whose course he is adding. January Term enrollment is not handled through the regular channels, and this is the only way in which instructors can know the final enrollment in their courses. The signatures and course cards must be picked up at the various in- structors ' offices. For visiting instructors, cards can be picked up at the respective department offices. A memo with the schedule of room assignments for January will be sent before the end of this term. Many of us have been wondering just how many people will be gone during January. According to Dr. Rogers ' data, about 350 students will be off campus. Seventy-seven students are enrolled in Independent Study, which will be taken by many away from Westminster. A group of 50 students are participating in the Philadelphia exchange program, while at least 68 others are enrolled in courses to be taken at 18 different 4-1-4 colleges. Ninety-three students are participating in Westminster ' s own travel seminars. This year they are to visit Mexico, the Middle East, made any such racist statement. Later, a letter from President Earland Carlson distributed to students claimed that the statement had been made, that it was in refer- ence to a skit seen on a network tele- vision program. The seemingly conflicting stories provoked a sit-in by 35 Westminster students, many of them members of Share, at 1:25 p.m., Friday, May 14. They sat on chairs, desks and on the floor in Old Main, but allowed ad- ministration officials to come and go as they pleased. The sit-in was for the purpose of obtaining an explanation from Dr. Carlson of how the investigation of the incident had been made. The demonstrators were asked to leave at 6:15 by Phillip A. Lewis, dean of the College, or face a possible court in- junction. Claudia Miller, Ed Freeborn. The 1970 Titans became the fifth undefeated squad in the history of Westminster, all under the guidance of Coach Harold Burry. The teams of 1953, 1956, and 1964 all had identical 8-0 marks while the 1955 edition finished with a record of 6-0-1. In 19 years of coaching at Westminster, Dr. Burry has compiled the remark- able record of 119 victories, 30 defeats, and four ties, a winning per- centage of 778. Before the 1970 season Dr. Burry ranked sixth among all NCAA College Division coaches. Titan wins this past season came, in order, over Marietta 26-6, Susque hanna 38-0, Lycoming 28-0, Waynes- burg 51-0, Heidelburg 40-20, John Carroll 20-6, Carnegie-M Mellon 27- 7, and Geneva 13-0. The Titans led in the ratings of Division II of the NAIA since the Lycoming victory. This was the inaugural year of the NAIA Division II football program. Division II was created in order to give the 148 true small colleges across the nation deserved recog- nition. With the regular season ended, and the Titans 0, Westminster accepted a bid to play nearby Edin- boro State in the semi-finals of the national championship. After some talk of a journey to Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, the game was played at Taggert Stadium in New Castle before some 6500 fans. The Blue and White looked im- pressive in jumping to a 13-0 half- time lead and coasting to a 20-7 victory. In the championship game last Saturday Westminster met Ander- son College of Indiana, again in Taggert. About 5000 fans showed up to see the contest. The third quarter displayed the fense that made the Titans unb able all year as a fumble and a g line interception stopped two I and White drives. The fine pase of Mark Manley and receiving Kirk Carpenter coupled for touchdowns and four extra point the waning four minutes of game, but one last symbolic ir ception by Don Grimm ended the i test and the Titan quest for the tional title. Greeks 170 A big question in many freshman minds this past spring as they took part in what is commonly referred to as rush (i.e. snow job ), was whether they would choose to remain G.D.I. ' s, forfeiting the companionship and prestige that accompanies Greek membership, and to keep their own individuality rather than assuming that of another. The choice being offered — a small percentage of eligible fresh- men chose to assume the individuality of one of the following Greek organizations on our campus. It is easy for me to leave mis-navigated seas — but what of you? Touch me gently, as the wind moves the rippling river, but cannot touch life below; — gently, Until I rise above the dark waters to take you by the hand, and walk with you. . H. Preate Editing a yearbook is an exercise in frust- ration. Besides the working course in human relations, there is always the nag- ging fear that something that was sup- posed to have been sent in a month ago hasn ' t yet been started. You think about the thesis that you ' re supposed to be writ- ing, the graduate schools to which you ' re supposed to be applying, the interviews you ' re supposed to be taking, the grades you aren ' t getting, and then you remem- ber things like getting called out of class to unload a semi so that Westminster might have its Argo, climbing a 100 ft. light tower at New Castle ' s stadium to get an interesting angle for a picture of the National Champion Titans, every week- end in the darkroom breathing fumes of acetic acid and watching Kodak Dektol turn your hands orange. All the while you keep in mind the $15,000.00 that this book is costing the students of Mother Fair and hope that it will be received with a bit more than the apathy characteristic of the place. What gets you the most is the knowledge that when the book is act- ually distributed, you ' ll be a thousand miles away, in another school, playing freshman all over again. But someday, may- be somebody will run into you and tell you that he had recently pulled this book from his shelf and leafed through it and that he thought that that was the way it was . . . maybe.
