building houses the administrative and admissions offices, as well as the depart- ments of education and psychology, economics and business ad- ministration, religion and philosophy, and english. the senior terrace is the embodiment of Westminster ' s traditional deference to seniors and serves as an attractive backdrop to the graduation exercises, the bells in old main tower summon students to classes and declare numerous conquests of titan athletes. 51 52 54 the arts and sciences complex, now in its second full year of use, has become the main academic center of the campus, its facilities were selected as the best in the east by a government fine arts project, the will w. on auditorium seats eighteen hundred for convocations and big name entertainment, beeghly theater offers the Westminster dramatics student full professional facilities which have been used to give little theater productions added dimension, the classroom section houses the departments of history, sociology, political science, mathematics, art, languages, and speech, the music department is spaciously housed in the conservatory of music, other special facilities include: an art gallery, art and language labs, and the campus radio station, wkps-fm. 55 the mc gill memorial library is the most popular location on campus when the students wish to stage a dress code protest demonstration, the library, however, has its more mundane duties: housing Westminster ' s one-hundred twenty thou- sand hard bound volumes and providing a quiet place for reading or relaxing, the children ' s read- ing room, located on the lower level, is much-used by town youngsters and future teachers, the faculty lounge provides comfortable facilities for both faculty and student meetings, a typing room adds a much needed facility to the study com- plex, a board room on the third floor is used by the trustees who meet there in air-conditioned comfort. 58 Westminster ' s science complex is divided into three parts: the thompson science holl, dark chemical laboratory, and freeman sci- ence hall, in these three buildings scientists majoring in chemistry, physics, or biology experiment with up to date equipment, room 116 serves the entire college as a meeting place for movies and lectures, of special interest is the spitz planetarium with its sixteen foot dome. 59 all paths eventxially lead to the ivalton-mayne student union building, with its lounge and dining area, pool and ping- pong tables, the tub is the perfect place for relaxing be- tween classes, or even cutting classes, the bookstores have a wide selection of books and other materials, the upstairs rooms provide meeting places for many organizations, guest rooms upstairs house chapel speakers and other honored guests of Westminster, in addi- tion, the tub provides head- quarters for argo, holcad, scrawl, ccf, and student gov- ernment, extensive remodeling will change the interior face of the building and provide greater facilities for goofing 60 61 a large part of nearly every person ' s life at mother fair Westminster is spent in the dormi- tories, show, galbreath, ferguson, and browne provide adequate, comfortable, and well guard- ed (impregnable) facilities for the women of Westminster, those with seniority are given the option of living in one of the three cottage houses: sewall, minteer, or mc kelvey. 64 Westminster men have the most sumptuous resi- dence in eichenauer hall, carpeted and complete witli detective service and a john in every other room, eichenauer full deserves its nickname of Westminster ' s holiday inn. nisscU, hillside, and jeffcrs also provide adequate housing for those men who live on campus. 65 67 old 77 received its unusual name from the fact that the titan ' s varsity basketball team was victorious in the last seventy seven contests that they played on that floor, today, this building serves Westmin- ster as the women ' s gymnasium, its swim- ming pool provides the titan swimming team with grossly inadequate facilities. memorml fieldhouse was built in 1950 to honor Westminster ' s war dead, it is the headquarters for Westminster ' s varsity sports and men ' s gym classes, its facilities include a basketball court, seating for thirty three hundred, wrestling room, weight room, lockers, golf range, and of- fices, plans and fund raising for the field- house addition, which would include an olympic-sized pool, are still under way. aciixiinistration in his first year as Westminster s president, dr. earland i. carlson received mixed re- views, this was to be expected, naturally, with the sc ent of change in the air and several groups with differing opinion about the nature of that change, dr. Carlson ' s early pronouncements concerned a very vague dialogue between athens and jeru- salem. the students, the faculty, and that unseen power, the board of trustees, gave their own interpretations to this dialogue, this gave dr. carlson time to get to know the college, a tireless listener, he inter- viewed concerned persons almost around the clock, from these conversations grew innumerable committees, the committee method seemed to the restless students and faculty to be indecisive, slow, and incapable of meaningful action, it re- mains to be seen what changes will occur, it was only natural for the third or fourth year student to be piqued with the lack of dramatic change, dr. carlson found the freshmen and sophomores much more will- ing to serve as committee members, the upper class unrest was not dr. middle left — jitn stey and bev michael, homecoming chairman; middle right — f ie sigma nu entry; bottom — galbreath ' s winning decorations. for the second year in a row, Westminster ' s home- coming came on a beautifully warm and sunny autumn day. using comic strips as a theme, the homecoming floats and dorm decorations were unusually colorful, alpha sigma phi fraternity and alpha gamma delta sorority won the greek prizes, galbreath hall was judged the best decorated dorm, the game, more than normally spirited since it rep- resented the last in a long series of athletic confron- tations between grove city and Westminster, was won by the titans 28-13. at halftime the contest winners were announced and the homecoming queen was named, this year margie moore, sigma kappa sorority, reigned over a court of sorority and independent candidates. 165 clockwise: the queen and escort, the hi-guijs, dance scene, the chapel pres- entation of the candidates. the dance of the year was held at youngstowns hotel oh o niusic was provided by the hi-guys who provided music that both the undergrads and the alumni enjoyed, margie moore the home- coming queen presided over the dance with her court of ruth akrie karen wohlgamuth, debbie wamer, pat olsen donna f l wski, lynn mallery, and biz ellis. a fine time was had by all 0 ™ the little cinderellas had to be back in the bosom of their mother fair Westminster. 166 167 big name entertainment, well attended and un-censored (for a change), was a success that delighted the student government more than any- one as they broke even for the first time since peter, paul, and mary. the ramsey lewis trio, according to time the hottest jazz group going, was very well received by the student body, they performed all their hits, including the million seller, the in crowd, the spring semester ' s en- tertainment, the lettermen, proved to be the best of the big names to appear at Westminster in several years, as the popular choice of the stu- dent body in a poll (one of the rare ones that was listened to), the group sold out will w. orr, an achievement that only three groups can claim. the artist-lecture series again showed a lack of lecturers, the one that did speak, waiter judd — former minnesota congressman and foreign affairs expert, was by far the most controversial that Westminster has seen in several years, the highlight of the per- forming part of the season was the lost in the stars production, with the original broadway cast starring in this adaptation of alan paton ' s cry, the beloved country. the musical performances, topped by kathryn bacon ' s piano recital, were adjudged better than usual, in the only poorly received date of the year, the manhattan festival ballet, was even given a bad re- view in the holcad. nevertheless, it was the first look at ballet for some Westminster students, and most of the first timers went away impressed. left page: top left — waiter judd; bottom u ii— kathryn bacon. 169 little theater ' s second season in the beeghly theater opened with three one acts written by edward albee, the em- bittered young playwright of tvho ' s afraid of Virginia wolf. the three plays presented albee ' s scathing proclamations of society ' s sins as they were at once universally symbolic, absurdly funny, and tragically true in giving insights into human relationships. the ironically named american dream more closely re- sembled an american nightmare, the play dealt with the reversal of parental roles, the freudian destruction of a child and a dear old grandmother who feared being taken away by the van man. in Westminster ' s production di- rected by doug vander yacht, sally kolesar starred as mommy, galen girvin as daddy, trudi kalb as grandma, sue enzor as mrs. barker, and bill jesburg as the american dream. the zoo story, dealing with the sordid reality of lonliness and the inability of one human being to communicate with another, starred douglas scott as peter and don goughler as jerry. the sandbox, a sequel to the american dream, was a metaphor for a funeral as grandma digs her own grave with a toy shovel. albee, as a playwright, challenged the Westminster audience, his plays are designed to make the audience feel uncomfortable or perplexed or en- raged — anything but indifferent and unfeeling, as plays that charged their audience with though and meaning, they were the highlight of a very good season. 170 4 . 4-, left page: top — trudi kalb (grandma) and sue enzor (mrs. barker); Westminster ' s production of hus stop, a romantic comedy by William inge, was directed by dr. william burbick. in writing this play, inge used a popular situation in literature, that of assembling a group of strangers with problems under unavoidable and inescapable circum- stances, he deftly uses his strangers to act out a moving commentary on human love, as in most comedies, the basic situation is resolved satisfactorily for everyone, douglas scott as dr. lyman, art miller as bo, sue kolderup as cherie, dan klinedinst as will, gary webster as virgil, and becky leax as grace all gave good performances in this, the second little theater production of the season. 171 mother courage, written by german playwright bertolt brecht, centers around a german canteen woman and her family during the thirty years war. directed by earl lammel in his first little theater production, the play was extremely well received as a comment about the futility and debauchery of war. trudi kalb played the lead role of mother courage, a portrayal that won for her the best actress of the season award. the teahouse of the august moon, described by director earl lammel as a light, enjoyable comedy with no profound meaning, starred mark ivancic as sakini, dick Wilkinson as captain fishby, lou malandra as colonel purdy, and chris briggs as lotus blossom, if teahouse did have a message aside from being frothy entertainment, it was that with age comes wisdom, very ap- propriate for a Westminster audience. the gay nineties revue, directed by william burbick, was a fun show with a cast of over sixty, the performances ranged from rita phil- Hppi ' s portrayal of lillian russell to magic shows, a good time was had by all, performers and audience alike, as the vaudeville — in modern day lingo, variety show — achieved its purpose very well, a new dimension was added to the little theater this year with the inception of the 4:30 theater, diverse entertainment performed by interested students was the keynote of the 4:30 season as one acts, opera, and allegories were presented, to the delight of over two hundred students who took time out of their friday afternoons to enjoy this worthwhile experiment in entertainment. music majors, since their education at Westminster is of a professional nature, are required to pre- sent a senior recital, this activity caps their four year Westminster career and demonstrates to others what the performer has accomplished. 174 this school year saw the inauguration of irving carlson. dr. carlson, in his inaugu hzed nature of education. he reiterated h (reason) and Jerusalem (faith), dr. paul delivered the main address, dr ' Carlson ' s responsibility, and travail of the college p tives from all over the academic world, w ministerite. Westminster ' s tenth president, dr. earland ral address, pledged himself to the civi- is belief in the dialogue between athens 1. mc kay, president of millikin university, former boss outlined the requirements, resident, the ceremonies, with representa- ere a rare and inspiring sight for the west- 175 some very untraditional things happened at Westminster this year, everyone came to school, for example, expect- ing student council elections, so what happened? the outmoded student council changed its name in the only visible innovation contained in a new constitution, so Westminster had student government elections, spring weekend was different because the mud was frozen in- stead of gooey, wkp ' s first year of broadcasting was highlighted by dave walls ' marathon dj stint for the benefit of a local family. 176 the big happening of the year was, however, the great dress code controversy, this piece of trivia kept the at- tention of a student body hungry for change while many other opportunities for more meaningful protest were ignored, in loco parentis was the phrase of the year as the students began to find the weight of the undefined admini- stative thumb more oppressive than usual, all concerned hoped that somewhere in dr. this year ' s monthly meetings, in april twenty-two students j met the requirements of a 3.0 after four semesters of calculus j and a 2.75 all-college average and were initiated into the j society at the annual banquet, as its award, the honorary . presents a book to the sophomore mathematics major withli the highest cumulative average. i mortar board, this group is a national honorary for senioni} women, members are chosen on the basis of a 3.0 all college, | leadership and service within the college community, one of i mortar board ' s primary purposes is to promote high academici achievement and t hus the group provides a tutorial service ■ and awards a scholarship to an outstanding sophomorerj woman, junior women with a high academic standing arerJ traditionally honored by a smarty party in the fall. mu delta epsilon. this organization is Westminster ' s own 7 pre-ministerial honorary, membership is open to junior pre-M min students who have a 3.0 in theology and a 2.5 all-college i average, mu delta epsilon has two purposes: to honor theij academic achievements of its members and to encourage itsl! members in the pursuit of ideals suited to the christian min-ii istry. in a year of growth and re-evaluation following re-e organization in 1967, the group ratified a new constitution, ii the fall initiation of twelve new members was highlighted ij by penetrating dialogue with faculty members, campus i seminary day was also successfully initiated in connection n with the faculty committee on pre-seminary studies. mu phi epsilon. this honorary sorority, a professional group, |i requires a 2.75 all-college and a 3.0 average in music for i membership prerequisites, in addition to the academic re-t quirements, the sorority wants musical accomplishment, per- r sonality, and character in its prospective members, an award i is given annually by the group to the outstanding senior in the group, a party which honored the seniors closed out ann active year. omicron delta kappa, exemplary character, scholarship, lead-il ership, and service to the campus life are but a few of the requirements for membership in odk, the men ' s national i leadership honor society, this spring, as has been the tradition n in past years, a faculty committee presented a man of the i year award to the outstanding man of the senior class, thisf year the award went to james h. moorhead, who was active, in ccf, studied in the honors program in history, and grad- uated summa cum laude after three years at Westminster. omicron pi delta, this year the organization underwent a re-evaluation and plans to affiliate with national honories in n business administration and economics in the coming year, n as this year ' s project, the honorary which requires a 3.0 average in either business or economics and a 2.75 all-college i of its members, sold advertising space for the argo. in the • annual banquet, held this year at sharon ' s holiday inn, the members heard vemon smith, superintendent of sawhill tubu- lar products, who discussed the problems with management and career possibilities in this area, the group took several i field trips as the guests of youngstown and Pittsburgh firms. r duquesne university ' s graduate school of economics hosted ■ several interested members of the honorary, the monthly meetings were highlighted by guest speakers in economics ■ and investments, after this year ' s advisor, mr. robert dyer left to continue his education, the honorary elected dr. robert milam as its new advisor. phi alpha theta. this national history honorary has had a chapter on campus for twenty-two years, any student with a 3.0 through twelve hours of history is eligible for member- 250 ship, phi alpha theta meets monthly to hear speakers and discuss subjects of historical relevance, each spring the honorary presents a book award to the senior history major with the highest cumulative average in his field and gives a dinner to honor the outgoing seniors an the incoming initiates. phi mil alpha, this sinfonia fraternity of america represents the music profession as a professional fratemity. since its founding in 1898, it has had four purposes: to advance the cause of music in america, to foster mutual brotherhood and welfare of students of music, to develop the truest fraternal spirit among its members, and to encourage loyalty to the alma mater. Westminster ' s chapter, xi psi, was formally installed april 24, 1966. phi Sigma tan. the national philosophy honorary, phi sigma tau, exists at Westminster for the encouragement of interest in philosophy and philosophical questions of every nature, the requirement for associate membership is a 4.0 after three hours of philosophy, while a full member must have a 3.0 after six hours of study, throughout the year the honorary invites interesting speakers, such as dr. j. b. rogers discussing his latest book, to the monthly meetings. phi delta phi. this group is a national french honorary whose purpose is to promote an appreciation of and an affection for the french language and culture, membership require- ments for Westminster ' s delta rho chapter, installed in 1966, include completion of a 300 level french course with a cumulative 3.0 in french and a 2.8 all-college, this year some of the groups activities included an initiation dinner at the tavern, a christmas party and french carol sing at the home of the group ' s advisor, miss alice mac farlane, a twelfth night celebration in the traditional french manner, student talks on various aspects of french literary history, and a demon- stration lecture by dr. george clemens on how to make french tapes for language lab. the active year ended with the annual french picnic in may. pi sigma pi. Westminster ' s academic honorary, until a chapter of phi beta kappa is installed, has as its requirement for membership a 3.4 all-college average, this average, attained ' after seventy-five hours of study, must be kept if the member is to retain his membership, the group sponsors the spring honors convocation and an annual book drive for the library, this year the convocation was rated a success as the speaker, i dr. j. b. rogers, held the audience ' s attention throughout his i address — a rare feat at the hour and one-half convocation, i psi chi. the purpose of this national psychology honorary is to stimulate its members to achieve outstanding scholarship, especially in the field of psychology, each year the group ' gives an award to the junior psychology major with the ' highest all-college average, the group also continued in its drive to complete the library ' s collection of graduate school bulletins, this is an aid to those who would seek to further their education. scroll, this group is the english honorary society at west- minster, it was originated as a club in 1939 to encourage student interest in literature and writing, monthly meetings are held to discuss poetry and short stories, this year, dr. waiter slack of the political science department met with the group to discuss the problems of publication, membership is open to all students with a 3.0 average through twelve hours of english. mr. chris brown is the group ' s advisor. rho gamma, organized in 1947 as a local business education honorory society, this group strives to stimulate creative in- terest in the field of business education, majors or minors jin the field who achieve a 2.5 all-college and a 3.0 in business subjects may join the group which stresses high scholarship and the desirable qualities of a successful business education worker. Sigma delta pi. for students who are interested in the Spanish language and culture, the epsilon tau chapter of this na- i tional honorary offers lectures by native Spaniards, folk songs, and a christmas party where Spanish customs such as the pinata are observed, this year the meetings included mr. daniel van dyke ' s showing of slides of his mexican trip, to be eligible for the Westminster chapter, a Spanish student must be a sophomore in Spanish with a 3.0 in Spanish and a 2.8 all-college. sigma pi sigma. the activities of this national physics honorary ranged from seminars on esoteric subjects to a physics de- partment picnic, the highlight of the year was a seminar given by dr. arnold honig of Syracuse university on ortho- and para-hydrogen, this seminar was sponsored by the na- tional science foundation, a new program to help graduating sigma pi sigma members was initiated this year: the alumni file will keep members in touch with the alumni, a record of the graduate ' s career will be kept and will be available for consultation by anyone wishing information on a par- ticular grad school or industry, the Westminster chapter re- quires a 3.0 in physics and a 2.75 all college of its member- ship candidates. tau kappa alpha, this organization is a national forensic honorary, their purpose is to promote interest in public speaking, most of the local chapter ' s emphasis is placed on debate and oratory, those given membership in tka must have an outstanding two year record in forensics and rank in the top third of their class. thancs. this group is Westminster ' s sophomore men ' s hon- orary, membership is based on scholarship and activities, leadership and other intangibles are also considered in re- 251 viewing a candidate for membership, the group, whose academic requirement is a c , holds a cake sale to finance their annual award of a scholarship to a deserving freshman, the scholarship criteria are: need plus all the qualities needed for membership in thanes. who ' s who. requirements for membership in who ' s who in american colleges and universities include a c academic average and an active campus life, lists of eligible students are presented to student government, the members of this organization then determine the most deserving of the students. american chemical society, the student affiliate of this na- tional professional organization is composed of those chem- istry majors who find their interest in the field going beyond that material which is available in the classroom, their monthly meetings are open to the public and include films, student discussions, and guest lecturers, the program initiated last year which brings in students from other colleges to discuss their studies and research was a continued success this year, one of the local members, glenn edmunson, dis- cussed his recent patent for a way to render nitro-glycerine safe for transport. american guild of organists. Westminster ' s branch of ago is composed of students who wish to augment their private organ studies with participation in the many activities of ago. this year the group attended several organ recitals in the area and helped sponsor an organ workshop at the college. hand, the 1967-68 Westminster college band is a sixty-five member organization directed by dr. lewis songer. the band livens home football and basketball games with its pre-game and halftime music, in addition to its annual winter and spring concerts, the band presented an inauguration concert in honor of dr. e. i. carlson. this concert was rated as the band ' s most outstanding performance. campus christian forum, this organization gives all interested Westminster college students opportunities in christian service, the group ' s purpose, as stated in its constitution is: to provide an opportunity for spiritual strengthening and witness through on-campus and off-campus service and fellowship; to strive to exemplify the person and spirit of Christ in every aspect of life. the group sponsors service groups on both special and permanent bases, ccf dialogue groups discuss books and topics of current interest, while co-rec nights pro- vide for healthy physical release. cheerleaders, a willingness to devote long hours to practice is one of the principal prerequisites of a titan cheerleader, generating enthusiasm at titan basketball and football games, these ten girls try to keep student spirit high throughout the entire year, the girls, advised by miss walker, are chosen from all four classes, led this year by captain pat wright, they never quit, not even at waynesburg. circle k. the circle k club, the newest student organization on campus, is an affiliate of kiwanis international, the circle k club is a service organization for both the college and the community, the Westminster chapter just completed its first year of service, yet it has become one of the more active chapters in the state, this year the club held an easter party for the mercer county children ' s home, helped the local kiwanians in their annual halloween parade, ushered at Sunday vespers, and performed many other services for the school and community, since the group is entirely masculine, they need some occasional assistance from the womenfolk, in this area the kappa delta sorority was of great help. interfraternity council, the purpose of i.f.c. is to unify and co-ordinate the activities of Westminster ' s five national social fraternities, this, along with fostering good relations with the administration, is their goal, i.f.c. meets once a month or whenever necessary, its representatives are made up of three members from each fraternity, i.f.c. put on three dances, co-ordinated fraternity rush and pledging, and sponsored a golf tourney this year. mermaids, this organization is composed of upperclass women 252 with at least 2.0 averages, membership is determined on a competitive basis, with only the most accomplished swim- mers being selected, tryouts are held in October after prac- tice sessions supervised by members of the club, once new members have been chosen practices for the show are begun, around christmas a theme for the show is chosen and ideas for its development are discussed, after semester break, the girls work hard on routines,, costuming, and staging. m.e.n.c. the music educator ' s national conference strives to develop the professional growth of its members. Westminster ' s student chapter is primarily for those students who plan to teach music in the public schools, for this reason, the latest developments in music education are presented at the meet- ings, two of the most important phases of this year ' s activities were the revision of the organization ' s constitution and the sponsoring of a christmas party for the students and faculty. new wilniing-ten. ten women who just happen to enjoy sing- ing comprise this group, their purposes are a good time, •service, and personal enjoyment, the members of the group are selected on the basis of their voice qualities, blending, and sight-reading abilities, this year the tensome gave their annual christmas chapel and toured the area giving concerts for local organizations. uanhelJenic conference, this council-type set up is composed jf the president of each social sorority on campus, each of the seven nationals also elects a delegate to sit in on the conference, pan-hel acts as an intermediary betAveen the administration and the sororities, it also makes and enforces he mles for sorority rush and the relationships between |reek women and freshmen, the most important purpose of he organization, however, is to develop better inter-sorority ■elations. nolitical relations club, this was the big year for the pre. 3very four years the group, under the advisorship of dr. valter slack, stages a ' mock convention. ' this year ' s was the biggest and bestest yet. spirited political controversy swept he campus, this is the purpose of the political relations club, and this year it was well achieved, during their monthly meetings when the mock convention was not being planned, the group heard many interesting speakers relate their opin- ions on the sundry political crises of the day. pre-ined society, this society has the aim of familiarizing pre-med students with the personnel and material associated with the field that they plan to enter, programs this year have involved speakers, films, and field trips, all activities, of course, are related to the medical profession. senate, this is the governing body of Westminster ' s women students, it is composed of representatives from each dorm, sorority, and class, the senate ' s principal purpose is to super- vise the actions of the house council of each women ' s resi- dence, in addition to this duty, the senate meets each spring in conjunction with the dean of women to review and discuss possible revision of the rules in the student handbook, this is to facilitate proper definition of and consequent com- pliance with the school ' s stated policies. sociology club, this group is composed of students interested not only in sociology, but in related fields, thus the group is open to all students, under the advisorship of dr. roger wol- cott, they sponsor programs of interest throughout the year, the club closed its activities at the end of this year with its annual picnic at dr. wolcott ' s home. student government, this group ' s problem was dissolved by some linguistic analyst who changed its name from student council to student government. otherwise not too much was changed, a new constitution was passed, but not before becoming embroiled in controversy with some of the non- apathetic students who though that the new document did nothing to cure the body ' s chief problem — impotence, big name entertainment was well received for a change and the student government was solvent, (broke even.) dress codes, poorly attended tub dances, and proper channels further added to president dave thompson ' s headaches. student Pennsylvania state education association, the psea has the basic objectives of advancing the cause of education, elevating the quality of teaching, and promoting the wel- fare of those who teach, this year the group sent represen- tatives to a fall leadership conference and a spring state con- vention, both held in harrisburg. programs varied in both form and content were presented, the first semester was highlighted by a banquet at the tavern at which mr. Stevenson of neshannock high school spoke, the organization culminated the year ' s activities with the election of new officers and wishes of good luck to the graduating seniors. titanaires. the titanaires are Westminster ' s precision drill team, this year they were under the direction of barb Wallace, the titanaires provided half-time entertainment for football and basketball games, they also marched in the homecoming parade and for parents ' day. the twenty-four members are chosen for their marching and dancing abilities, poise, and appearance, their advisor is miss walker. ickps. this year the college radio station changed its call letters and became a for real f.m. radio station, under the advisorship of mr. Stevens, the station blossomed quickly, popular music, classical music, opinion, and news filled the air over mother fair, the most listened to programming of the year was wkps ' excellent coverage of the n.a.i.a tourna- ment in kansas city, students filled the ' tub ' and listened on the edges of their seats at the game description, wkps, not without pride, is one of the truly student oriented groups on campus. varsity tv. this is the elite group of athletes that have earned the right to wear the varsity ' w ' through participation in intercollegiate sports, to become eligible, an athlete must letter twice in one sport, once in two sports, or once in a sport that the athlete has participated in three years, the purpose of the organization is to keep intercollegiate sport in its proper place in education, thus the group encourages high academic standards among its members, each year they sponsor the mvp awards in each sport and give a banquet at 253 sororities the end of each year to recognize the achievements of the season(s) past. y.w.c.a. the young women ' s christian association meets twice a month and is open to all women, the purpose of ' y ' is to realize a full and creative life through a belief in God. they annually sponsor the big-little sister program as an aid to freshmen, this year book-markers were made for the shenango home, several members went to regional meetings in Pittsburgh and Washington, d. c. alpha gamma delta, the women of this social organization began the year ' s activities by having the winning entry in the annual homecoming float contest, the ag ' s were well represented in the homecoming queen ' s court with karen wohlgamuth as their candidate, the traditional halloween tunnel party was followed by a very enjoyable house party with the chi o ' s. the year, of course, included christmas and spring formals along with the usual philanthropic work done by the sorority, lo ann christy was selected by her sisters to sit in the may court, the year was closed out with a parents ' day reception and a sing ' n ' swing performance that was praised by all. chi omega, the members of this sisterhood began their year by entering their tweety bird float in the homecoming parade, biz ellis was nominated by her sisters to be in the homecoming court, on homecoming day, the chi o ' s held a breakfast for parents and alumnae, the activities had no lull, as a house party with the ag ' s, a pancake breakfast for greek women, a faculty tea, and a christmas formal at the sharon country club filled the remainder of 1967. philanthropic projects included preparing thanksgiving baskets for the needy and packages for the boys in Vietnam, spring brought a very successful rush and a houseparty given by the pledges, spring also saw an easter egg hunt for the faculty children and a picnic for the settlement house children in youngstown. in april the chi o ' s held their spring formal at the greenville country club, their active year was brought to a close by a parents ' day breakfast and dinner and participation in sing ' n ' swing with the numbers supper time and hap- piness is. ' delta zeta. this year was a successful one for the women of delta zeta. fall brought homecoming happiness with a second place trophy for their peanuts float, pat olsen was selected by her sisters to run for homecoming queen, the dz ' s picked up another second place finish in the annual siglympic . working a little harder in the winter and spring, the delt i zetas were undefeated in the volleyball intramurals and als )i took first place in the spring weekend competition, the yet ■ included more than athletic events, though, with the doni dunk for all sorority women, several philanthropic project, the dz state convention, and, of course, sing ' n ' swing, was a long drive for the dz ' s and their dates, but the sprin ; formal at the carlton house in Pittsburgh highlighted a ver good year. kappa delta, the women of this social sorority began th year with their annual kickoff dance before the first footba! i game, at homecoming, the kd ' s were represented by thei queen candidate, donna majewski. their float was well re ceived, even though it did not carry off one of the top prize; in addition to their spring and christmas formals, the kapp. deltas sponsored a patroness ' tea and a dessert for the othei sororities, as they do every year, the kd ' s held a picnic fo the children at the mercer county orphanage and partici pated in sing ' n ' swing. phi mil. preparing for the homecoming festivities kept th phi mu ' s hopping at the beginning of the first semesteiii their offering in the homecoming parade, thumper, urges; the titans to thump ' em down. lynne mallery was he! sisters ' representative in the queen ' s court, they entertained! alumnae in their chapter room on homecoming afternooDi the phi mu ' s held their first houseparty of the year in ii psychedelic atmosphere in the activity room of the nev castle business college, the lake arthur country club wa the setting for an enjoyable winter formal, as a philan thropic project, the women of phi mu acquired a Vietnamese orphan, hong thi pham, whom they presently supper through food sales, among their other activities were par ticipation in intramurals and achievement of the highest scho lastic standing among the campus ' sororities, second semeste; began with rushing and continued with a fashion show foi the other sororities, the spring formal, parents ' day, sing ' n swing, and a pledge-sponsored picnic. sigma kappa, once again as September came the women o; sigma kappa swarmed back to their mother fair Westminster ' the sig kap ' s broke their tradition of second place homecoming I floats by not placing at all. margie moore more than com ' pensated, however, by making the homecoming court hei own. the chapter room underwent remodeling this year, al last, in addition to the traditional pizza party, fund-raising spaghetti dinner, and christmas parties for the alumnae anc the overlook the sig kap ' s journeyed to waynesburg for the big game and a reunion with a sister chapter, the new yeai began with a belated christmas formal, rush, and pledging, for the second year in a row, the sig kaps won the inter- sorority basketball tournament, they were also amply rep- resented at another tourney held in kansas city, sig kaps, along with the rest of the campus, took part in the mocl; convention, the annual thiel picnic was held at thiel. the year ended with a parents ' day dinner and a presentation of a cole porter medley in the sing ' n ' swing. zeta tail alpha, the women of zet tau alpha started the school year off right by placing first in the siglympics. soon after- ward they held their fall houseparty and founder ' s day cele- bration, debbie warner represented her sisters in the home- coming court; their float was based on a li ' l abner theme, other fall activities included a halloween party in the mercer chfldren ' s home and the christmas formal at the sharon holiday inn. zeta week and a christmas party in the chapter room brought the first semester to a close, second semester activities began with rush, the spring houseparty and formal followed, the zeta ' s held their annual ice cream social for 254 fraternities all greek women in april. as one of their philanthropic projects they contributed to support a child in jordan. as the school year came to a close, they participated in the parents ' day festivities and gave a buffet luncheon for their [parents and alumnae. lalpha sigma phi. the alpha sigs ' first act of the new year was to welcome the freshman women to Westminster with their annual freshman tea and a serenade outside the womens ' dorms, this year saw the phipies win the ' a ' league bas- ketball intramurals and also win the scholarship trophy it the fall and spring honors convocations, their entry in :he homecoming float contest, ' Taat-ter ' em titans!, won first Drize, and their annual siglympics was the biggest and best 3ver, this year with good weather conditions, house parties, ush, and formals filled the rest of the year which was ended w sing ' n ' swing and a parents ' day luncheon. vii kappa tau. beginning with their traditional tea for fresh- nan women and an open house for freshman men, the inembers of this social fraternity experienced a busy, active i ear. they entered the homecoming float contest and held a lomecoming reception for parents and alumni, the phi tau ' s mtered a team in every intramural league and finished well n nearly all of them, their annual greased pig contest was ts usual rousing success, as was the christmas party held vith the kd ' s. the year was ended with sing ' n ' swing and he annual spring picnic at mill creek park. igma nu. the snakes are the oldest social fraternity on [ampus. this year they added one more successful year to heir already long list, they entered a float in the homecoming liarade and received the freshmen with a tea. alumni and barents were received at a homecoming breakfast, fall house- parties closed out the first semester activities, in addition to rush and pledging, the snakes were busy with their annual volleyball tourney, spring formal, and sing ' n ' swing, a parents ' day reception closed the year. sigma phi epsilon. the men of sigma phi epsilon began this year as they begin all years — with a freshman tea. (for freshman women, natch.) homecoming was its traditional success as the eps presented their non-float to the home- coming audience, a dinner was given for the homecoming queen candidates and a luncheon for alumni and parents activities for the year included having at least one team in all intramural leagues, for their eff orts, the eps were win- ners in the football and basketball b ' leagues, rush, formals, and pledging rounded out a good year for the eps, a year that was ended with an unusual sing ' n ' swing performance and a parents ' day luncheon. theta chi. some of the theta chis ' activities for the year included a tea for the freshmen women, monthly house parties, christmas and spring formals at sharon ' s shenango inn, a fraternity smoker and other rush functions, the brothers successfully participated in intramurals of all descriptions, theta chi ' s homecoming float entry, roadrunner, won second place in the fraternity division, this year ' s rush efforts were well rewarded as fifteen men became brothers, several mem- bers attended the regional theta chi convention held in toledo, ohio. seven went to miami beach to attend the national convention, for their sing ' n ' swing entry, they sang sheldon, sheldon and a medley of beer commercials, in may the fraternity bought the garrett estate, next year should be even better as the brothers move into their new house, the fraternity house farthest from the campus. I first Jock he was kilt a handsome man and James and next let me see yes ' ill that was cleverest he was kilt and my youngest boy was kilt last with the big eyes i loved like you can ' t imagine Harry was o god kilt he was kilt everybody was kilt they called them the kilties e. e. cummings 0 3 if november had not come, the Westminster titans would have been unde- feated, if the monster that ate Cleveland had had the little burg founded by mad anthony wayne for a chaser, Westminster still would have had the best defensive small college football team in the nation, but november was predestined to be and the monster was satiated with Cleveland, all of which resulted in Westminster ' s dies irae being spread over two very long Saturday afternoons, a play by play account would tell no more than a glance at the last two scores, the carnegie-mellon game was just an upset, but the waynesburg battle was dunkirk without boats, the yellow jackets and the titans were to meet in the game which time magazine billed as the clash of the irresistible force and the immovable object, the immovable object must have been kidding, the air above the cow pasture down by the b o station was filled with waynesburg passes, not many of which fell incomplete, the yellow jackets ' groimd game also left little to be desired, after the game a titan fan mumbled, God isn ' t dead. He plays right half for waynes- burg! that allegation was not disproven that day. there were other days, however, and good ones at that, the season got off to a rollicking start as harold burry, the reigning ncaa small college coach of the year, started a freshman quarterback and a green defensive backfield against a team that expected to go to the tangerine bowl, if juniata thought the Westminster game would be a piece of cake, they got the icing all over their faces as that freshman quarterback ran for three touchdowns and that green defensive backfield throttled juniata ' s air attack, the loss to west- minster was the only one of the year for juniata. thiel had their only loss of the season handed them by the titans the follow- ing Saturday, after playing to a scoreless tie the first half, the titans, led by the passing of dave bierbach, scored twice in the third quarter and coasted the rest of the way with ball control, or as Westminster affectionately calls it, burry ball . geneva had their homecoming ruined by an uncooperative titan squad that broke a scoreless deadlock with twenty-six second-half points, the west- minster defense, headed by all-american middle linebacker bob scarazzo, had now only been scored upon once, and that in the closing seconds of a game comfortably won. bethany fell easily before the titan defense which forced three interceptions and two fumbles, and the titan offense which converted three of these errors into scores, by this time the Westminster offense had jelled, with a now experienced bierbach at the helm, paul smargiasso and charlie kurz were running well behind a fine offensive line headed by bill etheredge and doug behn. the stage was now set for hurry ' s eighteenth consecutive homecoming victory, the opponent was arch-rival grove city, and feelings were bitter because this game marked the termination of athletic relations between the two schools, the grovers eased out to a touchdown lead in the first quarter, but the determined titans broke it open with three second quarter scores, including an electrifying punt return by charlie kurz. burry ball made the halftime score the final. glenville then fell easily victim to the titan machine, after this game it was announced that the Westminster titans had the best small-college defensive team in the nation, they now were a nationally ranked team with an unblemished record, they had all-american bob scarazzo, all-state paul smargiasso and charlie kurz. they had all-west penn conference bill samuels, bill etheredge, roger hannigan, craig mcnamara, and outstanding spirit of coach fran Webster ' s squad, the titans notched second place in the west penn conference with a 4-1 record, losing only to waynesburg ' s champion harriers, the highlight of the season for the titans came in the west penn conference championship meet at latrobe, when tom gregory outdistanced all competitors to capture first place, along with gregory and craxton, letter winners included bruce biggins, rick henderson, doug wilson, and tom armstrong. coach webster is looking for a fine freshman crop to replace seniors craxton, wilson, and armstrong. 262 263 over a decade ago, he overlooked one very easy way to get to kansas city: win n. a. i. a. district 18. this, for the second season in a row, the titans did. during their eighth visit to kansas city (more than any other team in the nation) the players did more than stand on the comer of twelfth street and vine with their kansas city babies and their bottles of kansas city wine, they played some basketball, and, at the end of the week, were one of the four teams remaining from a starting field of thirty-two. the titans, one of the shortest teams in the tourney, but seeded sixth, trailed pasadena state for thirty-seven minutes before mike dresphng tied it with a jumper, regaining the ball, Westminster went into a two minute thirty second freeze, drespling was set up for the last shot with just seconds left, but he missed, titan fans in the tub and in the second deck at k. c. were sent into ecstasy a split-second later as dave robinson knifed through two pasadena rebounders to tip in the winning bucket and earn mother fair a crack at a monmouth (n. j.) team with a 26-1 record, in a see-saw battle that saw neither team gain an appreciable advantage, monmouth took a one point lead with ten seconds remaining, billy samuels, with the ball inbounded to him, looked futilely for a well defensed drespling. dribbling the ball into the key, samuels forced an opening and arched a soft thirteen footer that dropped perfectly through the net as the buzzer sounded. Westminster, with her two hollywood-scripted victories, was now the Cinderella team of the tournament, eastern michigan, a formidable foe which had easily disposed of its first two opponents, fell victim to the hottest titan shooting of the season, the flred-up titans, playing like a team that believed in itself, netted a phenomenal 57.1 per cent of its shots, to send themselves into the semi-finals against towering, third-seeded central state of ohio. the ohioans, with an impenetrable zone, toppled the titans by twenty-one points, and went on to defeat fair- mont state for the championship the next evening, in the consolation game, the demoralized titans, who felt that they should have come closer the night before, were routed by oshkosh state, the season had begun many weeks before as coach c. g. buzz ridl, aided by frannie webster, fused a well-knit, finely balanced unit of nine men that were all starters , the titans ' strength was on the beach as ridl could call on a hot shooter like ' l uppy or strong rebounders like joe yost and dale boyd to come in and change the tempo of a game to suit the titan cause, mike drespling, a second team all- american who was invited to try out for the Cincinnati royals after his selection to the all-tourney team in kansas city, led the titans offensively and for his efforts was named the most valuable player in the west penn conference, russ boston, an honorable mention all- american, led the team in rebounds and was second in scoring, these two did not by any means carry the load alone, as six titans were game high scorers, flashy fred mcconnell, floor general and free throw leader, gave the titans an effective freeze and a pattern that broke every press that the titans faced all year, clave robinson and bill samuels were game heroes several times, as was george zepernick, who made his senior year his finest one. Westminster opened with an unimpressive win over slippery rock, their careless play continued against the stronger competition of st. francis and gettysburg resulting in two losses, an encouraging victory over powerful c. c. n. y. gave the titans the impetus they needed to extend their winning streak to five, maryland state, who, after a disputed loss to the titans in the previous year ' s optimist tournament, had vowed that they would return with a vengeance, did. the titans recovered from the maryland state game over christmas and returned to easily beat wittenburg and pitt. back home, mother fair entertained the n. i. t. bound duquesne dukes, in one of the most exciting games of the season, Westminster led the 264 dukes late in the game behind fabulous shooting before succumbing by a narrow margin, red man- ning whose highly touted team barely escaped with its reputation intact, lik- ened playing the titans at at Westminster to walking into the valley of death , buoyed up by the narrow loss, the titans took four in a row before walking into duquesne ' s valley of death , the civic arena, three more victories fol- lowed, including one of Westminster ' s semi-annual annihilations of pitt — a tradition that may end soon because pitt has signed an extremely com- petent coach for next sea- son. the titans then dropped a heart-breaking one point overtime loss to st. francis after leading by six with a minute to go. russ bos- ton kept the out-classed titans in the game with the best effort of his ca- reer, george zepernick al- most personally handed geneva a defeat, and the titans closed the regular season with an easy win over aUiance. Westminster 75 54 slippery rock Westminster 65 51 hiram Westminster 70 64 pitt duquesne 86 72 Westminster alumni 107 90 Westminster geneva 85 78 Westminster Westminster 111 86 amo ' s esso buhl community center 73 72 Westminster pitt 65 63 Westminster Westminster 60 45 hiram Westminster 81 64 geneva duquesne 73 63 Westminster buhl community center 74 70 Westminster ■wrestling St. Vincent kutztown state slippery rock western reserve allegheny slippery rock won 0 lost 6 23 20 27 18 26 24 8 Westminster 13 Westminster 8 Westminster 17 Westminster 13 Westminster 10 Westminster in their second season of varsity competition, coach ralph bouch ' s grapplers dropped all six matches, it should be recognized, however, that it takes time to build a successful wrestling program, and more time yet to build a winning tradition that will attract good wrestlers to Westminster, even though the team as a whole did not do well, there were some outstanding individual records: john hogue, wrestling in the 145-pound class, went unbeaten, winning all five of his matches, prob- ably the most exciting performer was mvp ernie bodo. bodo ' s unblemished record in the 177 pound class included four pins, his one loss came while wrestling in the unlimited bracket, against kutz- town bodo pinned his opponent spectacularly in the early moments of the first round, with underclassmen comprising this year ' s squad entirely, and with several top-flight freshmen ex- pected in the fall, the prospects for next year seem somewhat brighter. 270 s-wimming competing under about the most unfavorable con- ditions possible, the titan tankers went winless again this season, their record, however, does not reflect the team ' s desire, perserverence, and hard work, promising freshman and mvp dave fuller had some excellent individual efforts in the free- style events, the freestyle relay team of dave fuller, warren risk, eric wilkins, and captain torn kepple was undefeated in dual competition, and set a school record in the penn-ohio champion- ships of 3:39.2 in the 400 yard event, with most of the top point-getters returning next year, and another good freshman crop expected, the for- tunes of the titan swimming team will certainly improve and at least be on a par with the oppo- sition by the time the new pool is built. 272 the old adage that records were made to be broken certainly was upheld by this year ' s titan track team, no less than seven records were broken this season, as Westminster powered to one of its best track records in recent years, only a loss to slippery rock kept tlie titans from an undefeated season; every other opponent fell by sizeable margins, mvp laroyal wilson, who seems to break the triple jump record each time he jumps, extended the mark to a distance of 44 feet 11 inches, ed craxton, running the hurdles for the first year, broke the 440 yard intermediate record with a time of 58.3 seconds, russ boston leaped 6 feet 5 inches in the high jump to set a new standard, the 440 yard relay team of jim taylor, bob power, jim barron and laroyal wilson now hold the record in that event with a 44.1 time, the field events did not escape the record breaking onslaught, doug behn extended his record in the shot to 46 feet 1 inch, john pap- worth hurled the discus 140 feet 6 ' i inches, and keith conover now holds the longest javelin throw in Westminster ' s history with a toss of 196 feet 2 inches. although laroyal wilson, who could be cormted upon to win four events in each meet, was the big sparkplug in the titan attack, it was balance in all events that gave the titans a more than successful season, with most of the cindermen returning next year, it looks like the titans may shoot for an undefeated season. 274 tr stele won 7 lost 1 Westminster 110 35 St. francis Westminster 118} 26K waynesburg Westminster 107 38 geneva Westminster 95 50 edinboro Westminster 102} 42 thiel slippery rock 86 59 Westminster Westminster 86) 58 clarion Westminster 102 43 camegie-mellon 275 276 277 TDSLseTDetll J. , cdinuoro won A o lost yj Westminster geneva, 1 1 JL 1 o o Westminster geneva D n u Westminster allegheny q o Westminster Westminster D c O clarion state Westminster O A clarion state wayncsburg o o westmmster Westminster A 4 1 waynesburg westmmster A 4t q St. francis Westminster o o 9 st. francis duquesne 1 n Westminster slippery rock 1 0 Westminster Westminster 8 5 thiel 278 1968 proved to be quite a disappointment to the titan baseball team, with many of the key performers back from last year ' s championship squad, titan players and fans alike were expecting good things, inability to come up with the clutch hit, a sieve-like defense, and a rain-abbreviated schedule all contributed to the titan demise, the season got off to a poor start as mother fair dropped her first four contests, there was no giving up, however, as the titans came back to take five of their next six to even up their record, the most heartbreaking loss of the season came in the next to last game as the titan de- fense handed n. c. a. a.-bound slippery rock a 1-0 victory, the victim of this was bill harper, who pitched in the form that won him all-american honors the previous season, the titans ' last game was a victo ry against thiel that brought Westminster to within one game of the break-even mark, any hopes that the titans harbored of coming up with a .500 season were washed out as the last four games were cancelled be- cause of rain. leading the titans at the plate was freshman dave bierbach, with a lofty .448 average, dave, who was also an outstanding quarterback on the football team, was the winner of the most promising freshman award at the annual all sports banquet, senior bill harper contributed a strong .348 mark that included a dramatic last-inning home run against clarion that won the titans ' first game of the year, dave anderson, who was one of the few bright spots defensively, also had an excellent .340 average, paul smargiasso, a .289 hitter, was the leader in home runs with three and rbi ' s with ten. after these four fine stickmen, the titans ' hitting was exceptionally weak, in fact, the team batting average was an anemic .222. in the pitching department, the only hurler that worked more than fourteen innings was bill harper, who coach ridl said was the finest pitcher that he has ever coached, in his four year career at Westminster harper set many records, including a fantastic 23 2 3 con- secutive innings of hitless ball, this season bill was the victim of poor support, both offensively and de- fensively, he struck out more than one batter per inning en route to posting a 3-3 record and a 3.33 e. r. a. the team earned run average was a horren- dous 5.51. with harper, anderson, and smargiasso graduating, the future fortunes of titan baseball do not look good, new coach ron galbreath must look for an outstand- ing freshman crop if he expects the titans to regain their newly-lost standing atop the west penn con- ference. this year ' s tennis team was led to a tie for the west penn conference title by ' freshman sensation steve ross. steve, who had a sensational high school record, only dropped one singles match during the entire season, including the southern tour, outside of ross, the rest of the team was inconsistent, but played well ini clutch situations. the season opened with easy victories over conference rivals waynesburg and st. i Vincent, allegheny proved too strong for the titans who picked the wrong after- noon to have a bad day. Westminster then came back to shut out duquesne in their most convincing victory of the year, a loss to tough camegie-mellon was followed by the low point of the year as the titans were upset by the university of Pittsburgh, in the next match, the netters made amends with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over geneva to win a tie for the conference crown, trailing 4-2 after the singles matches, the titans won all three doubles matches to eke out a one point decision. buoyed by this dramatic win, frannie Webster ' s men went on to take the con- - ference championships, number four man, miles olsen, had the best day of his career as he won the number four singles and teamed with dave thompson to win the doubles, the teams of harrison-ross, and mcgill-beshore also cap- 1 tured doubles victories as the titans made a clean sweep of the doubles com- petition. ninety pound dull enamel in oflfset lithography, the college section was printed on a special paper, hunter naturel. the body copy, captions, and identifications are Caledonia roman with italics, the headlines are hellenica wide and the index is times roman with bold, four color and special effects were used to a greater extent than any previous argo. the tip in division pages on loden stock were an inno- vation, this year the argo strived to give the year and other yearbook subjects a presentation that was primarily visual, for this reason iden- tifications for group shots, group writeups, etc. were relegated to the general index and organi- zations index respectively, the po etry of e.e. cummings, copyrighted by the cummings estate and harcort-brace co., was used to give insights, some real — others satirical, into the church- related liberal arts institution attended by the students whose activities fee paid for this book. this edition of the Westminster argo was not the effort of just one individual, dave evans of e.g. a. and george Stewart of s.k. smith were eager and willing to help with the production of the book, barbara smith and jim turner worked tirelessly to see that the argo was a well- designed, accurate representation of the 1968 school year, toni jo fox and my wife, alfreda, typed endless copy sheets throughout the last months of their pregnancies, the argostaflf, espec- ially photography editors cliff mosher and jim rentz, helped give this book its soul, the visual effect, abey studio ' s photographer, neil baldelli, did outstanding work on the
