The awful apathy when four years seemed like half a life and you forgot about the newspapers; and then, paradoxically, the resulting de- sire for too much. Then again a change, the move toward moderation and maturity. Yet that is only a partial shot — an imperfect measure of memory. There is more. A close-up of a college must catch the quality of some- thing called the spiritual, the unknown. It is not found in one course, in one chapel, on one mountain-top experience. It is the overlapping of all philosophies — knowledge highlighted by the individual ' s experiences. It may be felt in various ways — the image of the blue ceiling, the sound of the organ, the sight of a favorite book. It may come through the hanging lights or the altar or it may come of itself, but this, too, is part of the picture.

Friends you never see again con- trast strongly against the blurred background of events. Their laugh- ter, voices, and mannerisms are stilled in time and they become an inseparable part of the campus, its buildings, its life. The Student Union, the common meeting ground for debate and gossip over a cup of coffee, becomes a symbol of a spe- cial kind of intenseness peculiar to the college student ' s naivete, his extreme hopefulness, and his ex- treme pessimism. The years of feel- ing too important, expecting too much, caring too much. 16
