WESTMINSTER COLLEGE NEW WILMINGTON, PA. JOHN CAIRNS, EDITOR FOREWORD To the college student there is no more omnipresent factor than time. For some there is never enough, for others there is always too much, and for still others it is never properly distributed. To the alumnus and undergraduate alike, the Westminster chimes effect a chain of association that in- cludes the passage of both time and their college experiences. So we of the 1961 Argo staff have tried to compile a book which will reflect for you both time and your college experiences. TABLE OF Preface 2 CONTENTS Organizations 134 Leadership 136 Honoraries 144 Publications 150 Speech and Music 156 Activity Groups 166 Greeks 172 Athletics 196 Advertisements 218 Directory 234 These are the things you ' ll remember, these are the su- perimposures of sounds upon sounds and images upon im- ages, each partially forgot- ten, each overlapping the other in a continual process of highlighting and blacken- ing out until the picture de- velops. This is the essence of routine that makes up the atmosphere you will remem- ber. Through the memory emerges the picture. The traditional grey Gothic dormitories, the gingerbread Victorian fraternity houses, the modern red-brick field house — lines of delineation measuring the life of a college. The white criss-crossed campus walks, the line of giant pine trees, the sundial, the arched entrance to Old Main, and the tower — the picture catches it all, uniting it with the college you anticipated, the college you know, and the college you will remember. Superimposed on the picture are the football games, the new fall clothes, the touchdown that won the game, the victory bells ringing as lines of students walked up the hill back to the dorm. There were the picnics, the candle-light sere- nades, the professor with that spe- cial sense of humor, and the Satur- day night dances. But within this picture is the era of sweet bitterness — the other side of the person you were. You will then remember those peaks of de- pression, the stinging eyes following all-night studying sessions, the in- tense political and religious debates, the cycles of doubt and then the 12 13 The awful apathy when four years seemed like half a life and you forgot about the newspapers; and then, paradoxically, the resulting de- sire for too much. Then again a change, the move toward moderation and maturity. Yet that is only a partial shot — an imperfect measure of memory. There is more. A close-up of a college must catch the quality of some- thing called the spiritual, the unknown. It is not found in one course, in one chapel, on one mountain-top experience. It is the overlapping of all philosophies — knowledge highlighted by the individual ' s experiences. It may be felt in various ways — the image of the blue ceiling, the sound of the organ, the sight of a favorite book. It may come through the hanging lights or the altar or it may come of itself, but this, too, is part of the picture. 15 Friends you never see again con- trast strongly against the blurred background of events. Their laugh- ter, voices, and mannerisms are stilled in time and they become an inseparable part of the campus, its buildings, its life. The Student Union, the common meeting ground for debate and gossip over a cup of coffee, becomes a symbol of a spe- cial kind of intenseness peculiar to the college student ' s naivete, his extreme hopefulness, and his ex- treme pessimism. The years of feel- ing too important, expecting too much, caring too much. 16 17 These are years to be silly. To do crazy, childish things for the last time; to decorate the center of the quadrangle with stolen Amish bug- gies, to carry small dogs to chapel in one ' s coat, to wash one ' s hair at four in the morning, to borrow food from the kitchen, and to go out for a midnight smoke on the roof. There were early morning tennis games and eight fifty-five swimming classes. This, then, is the close-up; a rediscovery of four years in a picture perhaps faded, but never forgotten. 20 28 34 Dear Friends: This Annual has value far beyond its cost. It has taken hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to produce it. Each year the Argo staff proves to be one of the most dedicated groups on campus. It is no doubt true that they must feel let-down when their finished work appears. Very few speak any really adequate word of gratitude. The book has a genuine value out of all proportion to our present appreciation of it. This is not an isolated case. Seldom has any youth properly appreciated his home, his parents, his church, his home town, his school teachers and college pro- fessors. Appreciation blooms late. It is not an annual harvest reaped in the late summer from an early spring planting. There are a few who never reap the harvest of appreciation. Given time, however, most people do come to a high sense of ap- preciation. Practice-teaching spurs appreciation of those who have taught us. Mar- riage spurs appreciation of our childhood homes. The necessity of work for daily food and clothing forces our gratitude to those by whose labors we have been nur- tured. Parenthood and child-rearing almost inevitably produce a spirit of grateful- ness to our parents. Such long delay is often tragic, in that our harvest is made too late for any real expression of thanks to those who have labored for us. This Annual will, in time, produce in you a genuine nostalgia. As you finger its pages, you will see yourself as you once were, unburdened by care, unbent with heavy responsibilities. You will likely look back upon a slimmer self. You will certainly marvel, in later years, that one so young could have known so much, been so sure of so many things. Time has its way of producing humility, charity, and long-suffering. If the Argo will recall some of your dreams, some of your college friends, some of your high promises to yourself and to God, it will indeed be valuable. The college has sought to instruct you in many of the fields of knowledge. Here you learned more of what man has hoped for, what man has done, what he has suffered, and what he can do. As you take leave of the student-status and become an alumnus, it is our hope that you have here deepened your faith in God. With Him you can do all things. May His blessing go with each of you throughout life. Sincerely, Will W. Orr 42 WILL W. ORR 43 Mr. Paul Gamble, serv- ing as Executive Assistant to the President, couples a successful record of service with a rich background of family-tradition concerning Westminster College. After graduation from Westminster in 1932 he held the position of program director for WPIC in Shar- on, Pennsylvania. In 1946, he served as a part-time fac- ulty member, teaching radio courses. Three years later he became a permanent staff member in the position of Alumni Secretary, and con- tinued in this capacity until May, 1960, when he as- sumed his present position. This position requires co- ordination of alumni rela- tions, fund raising, and pub- lic relations. Mr. Gamble ' s early as- sociations with the college date back to its original founders, one of which was his great-grandfather. He has added in many ways to the family tradition con- cerning Westminster and has played an integral part in its functions in the past eleven years. ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT 44 ACADEMIC DEAN To characterize in a few paragraphs the interests and talents of Dr. John Forry, Westminster ' s Academic Dean, would be quite diffi- cult. His talents are many; his interests varied. Dr. For- ry came to Westminster in 1946, serving as an English instructor. In 1953 he be- came Academic Dean and Professor of English. His undergraduate work was completed at Millers- ville State Teachers College. Later study at the Univer- sity of Pennsylvania quali- fied him for his Masters De- gree, and at the University of Pittsburgh for his Doctor- ate. The position of Academic Dean requires coordination of curriculum, registration, and student-advisor pro- grams. Students enrolled in his Shakespeare classes find his lectures spiced with in- teresting anecdotes gathered from his studies and experi- ences in advising Shake- spearean productions. A brief summary indi- cates a fine background coupled with a successful record here at Westminster. 45 DEAN OF WOMEN Through her association with young people as Dean of Women for six years and Resident Director of Ferguson Hall for a similar period of time, Mrs. Martha B. Whitehill feels that a new life, whose meaning cannot be measured, has been afforded her. The privilege that the campus has been given because of her presence is inestimable. Her smile has been a symbol of the personality and character which Westminster women hope to attain. Following her graduation from Beaver High School, Mrs. Whitehill began her career with youth in a country school in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. She has also taught school in Freedom and Aliquippa. She now busily coordinates women ' s activities on campus by directing orienta- tion of Freshmen women, supervising the housemothers, serving as advisor to the Pan-Hellenic Council, Cwens, Student Council, Student Conduct Committee, and ex-officio advisor to Mortarboard. The most gratifying aspects of her work and the ones which most endear her to the campus are the personal contacts she makes through counselling individuals and groups. 46 Mr. Graham M. Ireland has spent three devoted years as advisor to Westminster men and as an instructor in the department of Business Administration. His work has been dominated by the philosophy that the Dean ' s office should always be open for men to seek help with their personal and academic problems. Mr. Ireland graduated cum laude from Westminster in 1952 and received his Master of Business Administration degree from Western Reserve University. Be- fore joining the college staff he pursued a career in business and was employed by American Airlines and the treasury department of Republic Steel Corporation. He has also served on the staff of the New Wilmington Missionary Conference. In addition to supervising campus activities and counselling students, Dean Ireland more specifically advises Student Council, Student Conduct Committee, and the Interfraternity Council. Through his varied activities, he has maintained close associations with the student body who now hold him in high regard. DEAN OF MEN 47 After having served Westminster College for one and a half years as assist- ant to the Director of Ad- missions, Robert M. Ash- baugh was appointed Di- rector of Admissions and Placement in August, 1960. In this new position Mr. Ashbaugh is in charge of contacting high school guid- ance counselors and pro- spective students, process- ing applications for admis- sion, and locating job op- portunities for graduates in commercial and industrial business. Mr. Ashbaugh is a 1948 graduate of Pennsylvania State University and holds a Master of Science in Edu- cation degree from the Uni- versity of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining the college staff, he taught engineering draw- ing at Sharon and Sharps- ville Senior High Schools and was employed at West- inghouse in Sharon and Bell Aircraft in Fort Worth, Texas. Although his college du- ties often entail travelling, Mr. Ashbaugh finds time to spend with his two sons and to serve as a church elder in Sharon. Director of Admissions, Robert Ashbaugh As Dean of the Chapel, Reverend Judson McConnell not only carefully plans campus religious activities, but also serves as a friend and counselor to Westmin- ster students. Under his supervision, daily chapel programs and Sunday vesper services have presented a well-rounded program. Reverend McConnell ' s office, located in the Walton-Mayne Union Building, is open to students at all times. An alumnus of Westminster, Reverend McConnell received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in history in 1955. As an undergraduate he was outstanding in many phases of campus activities. His theological training was completed at Pittsburgh-Xenia Theological Seminary in 1958. Shortly following graduation he accepted a position at the Wallace Memorial United-Presbyterian Church in Greentree, Pennsylvania. Reverend McConnell has shown interest in Westminster students and has attained widespread admiration from the student body for his work. 48 Mr. Ross Ellis has served Westminster College as business manager and treasurer for a period of twenty-one years. He did his undergraduate work here and received a Bache- lor of Science degree with a major in mathematics. Har- vard University later award- ed Mr. Ellis a Masters De- gree and he pursued addi- tional graduate study at Northwestern University. In 1931, Mr. Ellis ac- cepted a position on West- minster ' s faculty staff and taught business and eco- nomics untU 1939 when he assumed his present posi- tion. Mr. Ellis is well known in campus circles and is active in church and civic organizations. Even with his busy schedule he finds time to enjoy music, fishing, and reading. Stud ents have been urged to attend meetings and to voice their opinions through the council which then presents suggestions to the administration. Activities under the supervision of the council include: Migration Days for ath- letic events, World University Service drive, Homecoming Dance, Freshmen Hell Week and Sing and Swing. Campus car registration and week-end movies are also a part of the program. This year a special project, that of sponsoring a big name group on campus, was investigated. The Four Freshmen were scheduled for an appearance at Westminster in April. If this activity is successful, it will be in- corporated into the regular program of the college. Student Council was also instrumental in presenting a plan to the administration which would eliminate many campus ac- tivities preceding the final examination period. Many students felt that they were not given adequate time to prepare for this period since a number of campus organizations held meetings preceding the examination period. On the whole. Student Council feels that student participation has been greatly aided by the open system of meet- ings and that the council has been very effective in bringing the student body and the administration together. MORTAR BOARD Mortar Board, a national honor society for senior women, established its West- minster chapter in 1955. This honorary seeks to promote scholarship, leadership, and service on the college campus. Each spring Mortar Board chooses its members from junior women who have attained at least a 2.0 average for five semesters and displayed their abilities as participants in and leaders of campus activities. By sponsoring several Donut Days and selling date books. Mortar Board has developed a fund from which credit at the college bookstore is given annually to a deserving sophomore woman. Each year Mortar Board selects the Outstanding Junior Woman and also awards citations to several senior women high in scholar- ship and service. The current Mortar Board group has tried to broaden its area of work by de- veloping a special project — urging students to take advantage of local cultural ac- tivities and stimulating a cultural environment on campus. 138 The Westminster Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa was installed this year, re- placing the group formerly known as Phoenix. This honorary selects its mem- bers on a basis of both scholarship and leadership. Men who are members of the junior or senior class may be considered for membership if their academic aver- age is 1.8 and they have shown outstand- ing leadership in campus affairs. As a group, these men discuss the needs of the student body, propose a solution, then channel their efforts toward solving these problems. The first initiation service of Omicron D elta Kappa was held on Saturday, Oc- tober 15. At this time the undergraduate members were officially initiated as well as several faculty members and graduate students who were originally members of Phoenix while attending Westminster. Under the leadership of President Bill Anderson and advisors Mr. Smith, Mr. Clark, Mr. Colton, and Mr. Ireland, the group successfully worked together this year in executing their goals. A. WHO ' S WHO One of the greatest honors to be given any senior is that of membership in Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities. To be eligible for this mem- bership, a senior must have attained an average of 1.5 or better for his six semes- ters of college work. The members are chosen by non-senior members of Student Council and representatives of various campus organizations. In the selection of the members, potential is the main determinant. This poten- tial is measured through activities, attitudes, leadership abilities, character and per- sonality. The number to be selected is set up by the national organization. The names and backgrounds of those selected all over America are then pub- lished in a national yearbook. This, and the honor that it carries with it, represent the intangible advantages that Who ' s Who can offer. Along with these go the tangible benefits of aid through a placement service or through fine recommenda- tions for later jobs or for graduate school. Here at Westminster, those in Who ' s Who stand before the other students as examples to be followed or as goals to be reached. They show the other students what may be accomplished in college life and the meaning of this accomplishment. 140 CWENS Row I: Mrs. Whiiehill. N. Cofer, R. McLam, P. Lockley, K. Hodell, C. Bluke, A. Each year as the freshmen arrive on campus, they receive their first greeting from a group of busy, active sophomore women. These women represent the na- tional sophomore women ' s honorary, Cwens. The Cwens are chosen as fine ex- amples of leadership, personality, scholarship, character and service. Their main purpose is to help and to promote schola rship among freshmen students. Acting primarily as a service group to the college, they were seen in numerous activities throughout the year. For the bewildered freshmen they ofTered tutoring services; for Homecoming and Parents ' Day they sold mums; and for the student body they sponsored several dances. This year they also initiated several new pro- jects. One of these was a scholarship to be offered to the most deserving freshman on the basis of first semester work. The twenty-one women of this group were readily recognized on campus this year in their new attire of navy skirts and jerkins. The red crowns and sceptres, by which they were distinguished, are a mark of the superior qualities which they rep- resent. 141 This year Pan-Hel, under the capable leadership of Norma-Kay Seiple, has been hard at work coordinating sorority life. In addition to cooperating with the Inter-Fraternity Council to sponsor Greek Weekend, Pan-Hel did a fine job in supervising second-semester rushing. The Council printed a handbook of rush rules for freshmen women and gave a tea for them in order to acquaint them with the Greek organizations on campus. Pan-Hel also awarded trophies to the sororities winning the volleyball and bas- ketball championships. Pan-Hellenic Council is made up of the president and one other representa- tive from each sorority. Mrs. Martha Whitehill and Mrs. Judson McConnell serve as advisors. Row 1: J. McCullough. N. J. The Council establishes and administers pol- icies which relate to every aspect of ac- tivity among the fraternities. Rushing, pledging, inter-fraternity events, and fraternity social activities are supervised and controlled by IFC. Besides sponsor- ing fraternity athletic competition, the Inter-Fraternity Council cooperates with the Pan-Hellenic Council in organizing the annual Greek Weekend. Headed by president Tom Mansell, IFC was composed of the president and two elected representatives from each fraternity. Buzz Ridl and Dean Ireland served as advisors. 142 Senate is Westminster ' s governing body for women. The seventeen members of Senate are composed of women representing the Student Conduct Committee, each sorority, and each women ' s dormitory. During the first few weelcs of school each fall. Senate sponsors a party to help the freshmen become better acquainted with one another. Senate members also visit freshmen women in their dorms to tell them about dorm and campus rules and to answer their questions. Another annual project of Senate is to sponsor the Mid- night Movie. This year Senate has secured permission for women to smoke in dormitory rooms. Also, each woman can now take an extra hour any six Wednesday nights during the semester. Senate was led this year by President, Bitsy Johnson, and advised by Mrs. Whitehill and Miss Hileman. It is through Senate that Westminster women are able to participate in the formation of the rules that govern them. SENATE Row 1: K. Hodell, L. Conaway. Row 2: K. McClure, J. Boothman. It is their hope that the words and pictures incorporated into this book will stimulate and animate memories of years spent on the Westmin- ster campus. This year a new feature has been added to the Argo in that it includes happenings of the entire academic year, 1960-61. The College Calendar extends from Freshman week beginning September 12 through Commencement on June 5. The Argo staff has found the compiling of this record a valuable experience. A chairman, appointed by the College President, heads the committee composed of the Academic Dean, the Business Manager, the Alumni Secretary, the Holcad, Argo, and Scrawl ad- visors, and the editors of the three publications. The Committee on Publications meets about four times a year to discuss finan- cial and printing problems of student publications. It also appoints the editors of campus publications and gives them an understanding of their responsibilities. The committee attempts to encourage participation in and constructive criticism of the student press, and to discuss mutual publication problems between administration and students. As an ethical guide for the Holcad, Argo, and Scrawl, a Code of Practices for Student Publications has been devised by the committee. PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE Row I: J. Boothman, Miss Keen. SCRAWL Student writers are given the opportunity to present their creative work in Scrawl, the campus Hterary publication, which is issued once each semester. The staff, headed by editor Marilyn Magee, reads and edits all work submitted to Scrawl on a five point grading system. Original selections receiving 2.5 or higher on this system are pub- lished. Several literary awards add incentive for student writers. These awards are in three main divisions — fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. The Chi Omega Fiction Award, Senate Humorous Fiction Award, and the Scroll Non-Fiction Award are determined by the originality and ingenuity of each work submitted and are awarded by a group of faculty judges. Judges for the Winter edition of Scrawl included Mr. Peck, Dr. Jensen, and Mr. McWhinney, while the Spring issue was judged by Dr. Adams, Dr. Cook and Dr. Edwards. 154 Information Please is compiled and edited each year by the mem- bers of Rho Gamma, Westminster ' s business education honor society. In this helpful directory is found each student ' s name, his school address, his home address, his class, and his Greek affiliation, if any. It also contains a complete list of the addresses and phone numbers of the administration and faculty. This Who ' s Who on Campus is quite helpful to both students and faculty in getting to know one an- other, as well as in planning daily activities. An unusual aspect of Information Please is the fact that it contains no advertisements. In order that the students may know the time and place for campus events, a complete social calendar is found in the back of the directory with a day by day account of the activities planned throughout the year. DEBATE and FORENSICS Titan Debate President, Bob Goode Westminster oratory winners, Carl Carmichael and Melva McCrory. Debate at Westminster College is under the auspices of the Titan Debating So- ciety. The Society seeks to create and maintain an active interest in debate and forensic activity as an instrument of higher education. The Society operates both a Novice program for Freshman and first year debaters; and a Varsity program for the more experienced debaters. The programs last throughout the entire school year, and debaters may even participate in the Pitt Summer Cross Examination Tournament. One of the reasons why debate is so rewarding an activity is that it is curricular as well as extracurricular. The topics debated frequently fall into some of the debaters ' major fields of study. The material the debaters gather on a particular question may cross departmental lines and serve to unify formerly disconnected bits of knowledge. It certainly will extend his field of interest and this extension is surely one of the prime justifications for the existence of debate. Skills such as clear, logical, and orderly thinking are fostered concurrently with effective speaking. These qualities: preciseness of thought, ability to evaluate evi- dence, and fluency of speech are serviceable in any field and certainly in every profession. Westminster debaters have expounded on a wide variety of topics in a wide vari- ety of speaking situations. Compulsory health insurance, capital punishment, and diplomatic recognition of Red China, are some of the topics. The speaking situa- tions have ranged from intramural arguments before friendly Women ' s Clubs, to participation under intense competitive pressure of a renown international cross- examination tournament. Finally, in a larger context, debate is one of the more significant activities of our Western civilization, for debate is both an instrument of democracy and a by- product of civilization. 160 Row 1: M. This was the third time in three years that Westminster has cap- tured this award, and it is the first time in the history of the state forensic associ- ation that any school has won the event for three consecutive years. On April 20-21 Carl represented Westminster and Pennsylvania in the national contests of the Interstate Orator- ical Association at Northwestern Uni- versity in Evanston, Illinois. His speech entitled One Man in His Time took third place honors, and dealt with the concept of ideal communication. This was the 87th annual contest, and in the past such famous men as Wm. Jennings Bryan and Woodrow Wilson participated in the event. Westminster ' s two past men ' s state winners were Chris Thompson in 1959 (11th nationally), and Scott Carter in 1960 (7th nationally). CONCERT CHOIR The Concert Choir for this year was comprised of fifty members. Many fi ne voices were blended together with very pleasurable results. As part of this year ' s work they made a tape with five other colleges to be played on the Youngstown television station on Christ- mas day. Another Christmas project was the annual Chapel service with Dr. Orr. The choir tour made by the group in April included various stops through the Eastern States. Under the direction of Mr. Clarence Martin, the group presented an admirable year of work. 162 VESPER CHOIR As figures robed in the traditional blue and white move quickly into their various places, all heads turn upward in anticipation of what will follow. After a brief silence, music fills the chapel and each member of the congregation experiences a deep, meaningful feeling. Every Sunday night the Westminster Vesper Choir is present to help make the evening services more worshipful. Under the direction of Mr. Clarence Martin, the choir presented numerous other performances during the year. With an unusually large membership they offered a year of fine service to the college. 163 BAND Providing lively and entertaining music at half-time for school foot- ball and basketball games and stirring up school spirit at pep rallies are but two of the activities brought about this year by the Westmin- ster College Band. The Band held its annual Spring Concert with guest soloist Alfred Galladoro, a renowned saxophone player, adding his own talent to that of the Band. Mr. Galladoro is well known for his recordings as well as for his personal appearances. Under the direction of Mr. Raymond Smith, a new instructor in our Music Department, the Band has done a fine job of boosting school spirit and adding a delightful atmosphere of music to our campus. 164 MAJORETTES p. The new organization has developed a constitution, more inclusive than was covered by the previous campus Christian program, and has set up a ruling cabinet system. Besides the president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, CCF is headed by five second vice-presidents who head specific divisions of the group — established services, special services, soc ial activities, publicity, and literature. Plans, policies, and aims for the current school year were formulated during an officer workshop early in the fall. Through regular Sunday evening programs in the Student Union Building, social events, and spiritual service on and oft campus, CCF forwards its goals of providing for Christian fellowship and offering opportunities for spiritual growth and service. 166 KARUX Karux offers to the men of Westmin- ster a fraternity for all those in prepara- tion for the ministry. It presents an op- portunity for fellowship among all the preministerial students and attempts to provide various means of preparation for those entering this particular field. All those who contemplate entrance into the ministry are eligible for membership. This year Karux had a membership of approximately fifty under the presidency of Fred Wilkes. Among their various ac- tivities the group made field trips to churches throughout the area to observe the church in action. The group was par- ticularly interested in having several en- lightening speakers for the men during the year. F. Wilkes. D. Murphy, J. Walker, D. Wolfe, D. Wagner, B. Myers, P. Fosberg, D. They were represented at the Homecoming Dance by Carolyn Blake, their Homecoming Queen candidate, and by the Shaggy Dog float in the Home- coming parade. Also in October the Al- pha Gams entertained sorority women with the annual Halloween Party in the tunnel. At the Greek Weekend carnival the Alpha Gams sponsored a Hit the Birdie booth and Give My Regards to College — an original song and dance routine. The Christmas season was a busy one including a chapel program, Christmas party at the home of an alumnae, and caroling for Mrs. Russell, the AG pa- troness. Second semester introduced a hectic, but fun-filled rush period. On pledging day the AG ' s were proud to see red blazers on seventeen freshmen. The pledges were presented at a party in Feb- ruary and they, in turn, gave a party for the actives in April. Participation in Siglympics and Sing and Swing along with a Parents Day din- ner and the Spring Formal helped to round out the year ' s activities. Certainly the 1960-61 school year will be a high point in the college memories of an Alpha Gamma Delta. 175 Row 1: G. Frazier, Corr. Sec ' y; S. Thomas, Pres.; G. Carlsen, Vice Pres. Row 2: M. Some of their nu- merous fund raising projects were a bake sale, a record hop, and a doughnut sale. They entertained the chil- dren of the Mercer Children ' s Home and raised money for the Pine Mountain Settlement, their national philan- thropic project. As a reward for their skill and vigor, the Betas won the volleyball trophy for the inter-sorority tournament of fall, 1960. Of the numerous other activities of the college year, the memories of the spring formal held at the Mahoning Country Club, the Ice Cream Social held for all of the sororities, the pledge dinner-dance in Mercer, the annual street dance, and the numerous house parties will live forever in the mind and heart of every Beta girl. October saw all sorority women invited to the Chi O Pancake Breakfast at the Alpha Sigma Phi house and a morning Coffee Hour in the Chi O chapter room for parents and friends on Homecoming Day. Nancy Seigel represented Chi Omega as candidate for Homecoming Queen. The Christmas season saw the spar- kling blue and silver decorations of the Chi O Christmas formal held in the Un- ion. Another highlight of the holiday sea- son was the party given the chapter by the advisors and patronesses. Spring semester brought its usual gai- ety to the Chi Omegas. Eighteen new pledges busily decorated Russell Hall for the Pledge Dance held in honor of the actives. The chapter then held a dinner at the Tavern in honor of the pledges. In April a dinner with the Chi O ' s from Thiel and Youngstown Colleges was held at the Shenango Inn. The annual Easter Egg Hunt, for the faculty children was, as always, a fun-filled event. The spring formal at the Shenango Inn in May drew to a close a most memorable year for the Chi Omegas. Row I: J. Hopkins, S. Morris, B. Eger. Row 2: N. Baird, A. Robinson, J. Pagiey, B. Craig. The 1960-61 year was a fruitful, happy and industrious one for the Alpha Phi chapter of Kappa Delta. The KD ' s be- gan the fall semester by capturing the Student Council float trophy at Homecom- ing Weekend for the second consecutive year. Greek Weekend saw the KD ' s pre- senting their co-ordination of arms and legs in a dance routine plus their pearl- in-the-pin booth. The fall semester also brought upper- class rushing during which seven new members were initiated into Kappa Delta. The KD Dessert, the Blue Angel house party, and the Patroness ' s Christmas party added to the activeness of the Kappa Deltas. Swinging into the Christ- mas spirit, the KD ' s followed their tradi- tion of donating a food basket to a needy family. Rigorous work mingled with pleasure was again evidenced as the KD ' s pre- sented their unusual chapel program. The ushering in of the new pledge class in the spring semester was highlighted by an en- joyable house party presented by the new members. Participation in Sing and Swing, Parents ' Weekend, and the spring formal rounded out the spring semester for Kappa Delta. The KD ' s are looking forward to another year which will be as industrious and memorous as the previous. A. Allen, Treas.; C. Christine, Vice Pres.; L. Leech, Pres.; L. Becoming a national sorority has been the ultimate goal of the Delta Chi ' s since May of 1959 when they were first recognized as a local sorority on Westminster ' s campus. In all college activities Delta Chi has made her con- tributions. During the fall semester Connie Rodocoy represented Delta Chi as a Homecoming Queen candi- date. The group also entered a float in the Homecoming competition and sponsored a booth for Greek Week- end. As charter members of Phi Mu the sorority partici- pated in Sing and Swing. And in May they held their annual spring formal. Delta Chi ' s camel-colored blazers have been replaced by black ones trimmed with red and bearing the red and gold shield of Phi Mu. Shortly following this event was Greek Weekend and the offer- ing of Sig Kap ' s Dunk a Sigma booth along with the entertainment of a song- dance routine to I Can ' t Say No. The philanthropy program was once again in full swing as Sigma Kappa helped to support the Maine Sea-Coast Mission and the Greek farm school. On the local level, tray favors were sent weekly to Overlook Sanitarium to help brighten the patients ' trays. When Christmas arrived, two Christmas parties were given — one at Overlook Sanitarium and one at Elmira Sanitarium, both of which were not only cheerful to the patients but to the mem- bers of Sigma Kappa as well. And one of the most rewarding experiences was the annual Mars Party at the Mars Children ' s Home. The Sig Kap ' s sponsored a pizza party for all sorority women and a home- cooked breakfast for the hardworking housemothers early one Saturday morn- ing. Second semester brought about rushing and the pledging of seventeen outstandmg girls of whom Sigma Kappa is very proud. Closing out the second semester was the spring formal held at the Broadhead Ho- tel in Beaver Falls. Thus, another successful year for the women of Sigma Kappa has drawn to a close. Row 1: C. Much to their pleasure, the Ben-Hur float placed second in the competition. Greek Weekend was the next project of busy fun. The Theta U mini- ature golf course was a hub bub of activity, and the evening was topped by T U ' s contribution to the en- tertainment — a gay Calypso number. Other Theta U features of the year included various house parties, the annual Do-nut Dunk, the Pledge slumber party, the sponsoring of a movie, and the pres- entation of a chapel program. Their two main service projects dealt with the altru- istic program of sending clothes and school supplies to the Navajo Indians and a friendly visit to the Elmira Home of the aged. The latter part of the year was spent in participation in Sing and Swing for Parent ' Weekend and in Sig- lympics. The year was then brought to a happy close by the sorority ' s spring formal. B. The Alpha Sigs began this year ' s activities with a Freshman Week redecoration of the first floor of their house. This project was enhanced later in the year with the gift of new chapter room furniture from the senior class. Formal activities began with Homecoming Weekend when the Titans Whitewashed Geneva, and the Alpha Sigs won their fourth consecutive display trophy. I.F.C. week saw the campus hit by Jack Sharp as Popeye and Old Main tower temporarily decorated with a spinach can. At the Greek Carnival much time was hilariously spent feeding the faculty. One of the most rewarding activities of Alpha Nu chapter was the annual Christ- mas party for underprivileged children. The Christmas formal at the Adams House in Irwin was the scene for the crowning of the Alpha Sig Sweetheart. The beginning of the second semester found the men of Alpha Sigma Phi busily engaged in rushing. The very successful results — thirty-three new Alpha Sigs. A temporary break was taken in the activity of the pledge period for the spring formal at Squaw Creek Country Club. The year ended with the third annual Siglympics and a successful softball season. 188 Row 1: R. Ericson, D. Deuel, R. Hckert, H. Pollack, C. Myers. Row 5: i. Royal, B. Bianchi, A. Smith, D. The men of Sigma Nu carried on tradition by again winning the intramural softball and football champion- ships as well as making an outstanding showing in the three intramural basketball leagues. Sigma Nu was re- paid for its efforts in basketball by winning the I.F.C. trophy. The annual I.F.C. King campaigns in November brought another honor to Sigma Nu when they brought Mr. Lucky, Circus Boy, Animal Lover, and Oliver Cool to Westminster ' s campus in the person of Mr. Chame- leon. The clever and well-organized efforts of the group earned the title of I.F.C. King for Bob Dunlap and Sig- ma Nu. Highlighting the social season of the first semester were a Christmas formal at the Pick-Roosevelt Hotel in Pittsburgh and a tea which was attended by faculty, administration, and freshman women. In the latter half of the year the White Rose formal was held at Edgewood Country Club in Pittsburgh, featuring the crowning of the White Rose Queen. Also, the year was characterized by several house parties and open houses at the Sigma Nu Manse. With the acquisition of a fine pledge class, the men of Sigma Nu were well pleased with a successful and rewarding year. ] 92 W. Growney, Commander; A. Girdwood, Lt. Com- mander; L. The members of Sigma Phi Epsilon look back on a happy, busy and success- ful year. 195 FOOTBALL For the third year in a row the West- minster Titans captured the West Penn Conference Title, boasting a 5-0 confer- ence record and a 5-3 season record. With only ten returning lettermen Coach Burry and his assistants were able to de- velop the squad into real champions. The season ' s opener found Juniata defeating the Titans 6-0. In the second non-con- ference game Indiana State Teachers College set back the Titans, 20-7. West- minster scored first on a pass from Susi to Pekich. This lead was short-lived, however, as Indiana scored twice in the first half and once again in the second half. Against neighboring Grove City the Burrymen won their first WPC con- test by the score of 19-6. Westminster ' s first score came on a handoff from Susi to Ferguson after a Grove City fumble. Freshman quarterback Herb Ellis inter- cepted a Wolverine pass on the West- minster goal line and ran it back 96 yards. On the next play, Gensamer scored on a handoff from Ellis. In the second half Gensamer scored again and Susi ' s conversion was good. Westmin- ster ' s Homecoming was a success as the Titans nipped Geneva, 7-6. Geneva took the lead as Pupi scored from the one yard fine. The Titans rallied as Ellis hit Pekich with a 23 yard touchdown pass. Susi ' s conversion was good and the game ' s scoring ended there. The Titans won their third straight conference game by defeating St. Vincent, 14-6, on passes from Susi to Gensamer and Ellis to Pe- kich, respectively. Susi began the second half with a touchdown pass to Wilkes. Gensamer scored twice and Susi cli- maxed a great day by scoring the sixth touchdown of the day and his sixth con- secutive extra point of the game. At Slippery Rock the Titans had an off day as they lost on a rain-soaked field, 18-0. They closed the 1960 season by tram- pling Carnegie Tech, 46-20, thus winning the title. Gerry Ferguson, Ron Frisco, Paul McNelly, and Steve Pekich were elected to the All-Conference team. 200 Westminster College was awarded the All-Sports Trophy in the fall of 1960 for the second consecutive year. The rotating trophy is awarded to the West Penn Conference team which compiles the most points per year in the nine varsity sports. The points are awarded on the basis of two points for each victory and one point for each tie. The teams which compete for this trophy are Carnegie Tech, Duquesne, Geneva, St. Francis, St. Vincent, Waynesburg, and Westminster. The following sports are considered: football, cross country, basketball, swimming, baseball, golf, tennis, track, and rifle. Westminster enters teams in all but rifle and compiled a total of 93 points while winning conference championships in football, cross coun- try, basketball, tennis, track, and split a 5-way tie for honors in baseball. Geneva was second in the bids for the trophy with 68 points. Carnegie Tech won the trophy the tirst time it was awarded and Westminster has won it the two years since then. Beginning with the 60-61 sports season the trophy will be awarded in the spring of the year, the points being accumulated to March 15. It will continue to follow this pattern, thus eliminating the summer holdover for the presentation. 201 CROSS COUNTRY Coach C. Oliver, E. Pollock, B. Kerr, P. Sanders, T. Truxell, D. Zinsner, S. Their season record was 5-3. Coached by Cleve Oliver and captained by Paul Sanders, the team had only one returning letterman other than Sanders, this was sophomore Bob Kerr. Paul Sand- ers, nucleus of the team for the past four years, holds both the school and course records here. Paul placed first in all but one conference meet this year, his loss due to an injury. He has lost only a few times in his four years of running. Sam Williams, a freshman prospect, hurt his leg and was forced to drop out after his first meet. Junior Dave Zinsner, a new- comer, did an excellent job this past year. Two freshman standouts are Jim Ledrick and Ed Pollack. The scoring in cross country is given according to places, i.e., 1 point for 1st place, etc., and then a team ' s places are totaled. This means that the winning team is the team with the fewest points. In the Titans ' first run they clobbered St. Francis 18 to 45. A strong team from Oberlin defeated the Titans 19-39. West- minster returned to the win column with a 21-39 score against Waynesburg. Car- negie Tech forfeited because of an ineli- gible runner to give Westminster their third victory. Geneva then handed the Titans a 20-35 setback, and Slippery Rock Teachers College smothered the Westminster runners 15-50. The Titans slipped past Duquesne 26-29. Grove City fell to Westminster in the last run, 26-30. In the All-Conference meet held at Grove City this year the Titans took third place. Paul Sanders, who had won this meet two years in a row, was first with only a half-mile to go when he fell over a cable stretched across the course and was hurt. Mr. Oliver talks it over with Kerr, Ledrick, and Pollock. Captain Paul Sanders 203 BASKETBALL Row 1: S. Daglish, R. Galbreath, S. Stolarik, J. Steele, Kells, L. Skiircenski, J. Dugan, M. Holm. MICHIGAN 101 204 Coach Buzz Ridl ' s Towering Ti- tans compiled a tremendous record in the 1960-1961 season, continuing to make Westminster College synonymous with good basketball. In what most peo- ple considered to be a rebuilding year, the flashy quintet finished the season with an excellent 23 wins against 5 losses. The not so towering Titans with only one regular returning from last year ' s squad had 18 regular season victories, in- cluding two impressive wins over the University of Pittsburgh. They suffered two conference losses to Geneva by a to- tal of five points and one non-conference loss to Bucknell. Led by senior co-cap- tains Jack Steele and Steve Stolarik, the Titans completed the team with juniors Bill and Bob Douds, Ron Galbreath, sophomore Warren Sallade and freshman Lou Skurcenski. With any member of the team capable of being top point man Coach Ridl was able to develop one of the most evenly balanced teams in the area. As a team the Titans averaged 77 points a game while limiting the oppos- ing teams to an average of 62 points. The widest margin of victory was against Thiel, a fifty point spread, 99-49. The narrowest was a squeaker in Kansas City against Winston-Salem, N. C, 35-33. The outstanding regular season record of the Titans along with their high Dun- kle Rating enabled them to compete on the N.A.I.A. District 30 playoffs. In these playoffs they defeated Geneva, 68- 55, and handed Mansfield their first de- feat of the season with a comfortable 9 1 - 68 victory over the Mountaineers. They then advanced to the N.A.I.A. Tournament in Kansas City for the third year in a row. The top-ranked Titans, sporting one of the smallest teams in the tourney, won their first three games, ad- vancing to the semi-finals for the second straight year. Westminster then played Grambling College and lost to the gigan- tic Louisiana team 45-44 in a thriller. The following night Westminster lost to Northern Michigan, 101-84, in an ex- perimental thirty second rule contest. Grambling went on to defeat George- town, Kentucky by 20 points for N.A.I.- A. Championship. Our congratulations are extended to Coach Buzz Ridl for his excellent teaching and coaching of the Titans dur- ing this rebuilding year, and best wishes to him and the team for the com- ing season. Coach Ridl with Freshmen B. Hennon, Schrecengost, S. Daglish, L. Skurcenski, and J. Riggans. Ron Galbreath, former Wampum High star has been a key man in the Titan attack for three years. This year Ron has been a real standout. One of the most accurate shots in Westminster ' s history, Ron shot a re- markable 80% from the foul line and 55% from the field. He tied the school ' s single game scoring record (set by Chuck Davis in 1960) with forty points against Bucknell. He set a new Westminster season record with 607 points and is eighth among Titan all-time scorers with a total of 1081 tallies. Included in Galbreath ' s other honors are: Second team Associated Press Little All-America; first team Associated Press All-State; first team District 30 N.A.- I.A.; first team Pittsburgh Press All-District; Most Valuable Player, West Penn Conference; Honorable Mention U.P.I. Little All-American; and the All- Opponent teams of Bucknell, Carnegie Tech, Pitt, and Waynesburg. Coach Charles Buzz Ridl ' s ability was again recog- nized, as he was named District Small College Coach of the Year. It was only a small token of the great honor this coach deserves. N.A.I. A. With only four lettermen from last year swimming, Coach Burry had a challenge upon his hands. Academic probation, graduation, and lack of interest, reduced last year ' s capable squad to a few trusty diehards. Ed Schade, a transfer student from Case Tech, showed much abihty and potential, but due to his status was ineligible in competition. The four men who received letters this year were senior captain Don McClure, senior Tom Mansell, junior Jim O ' Donnell, and sophomore Frank Clark. These men were also the only returnees from last year ' s team. Jim O ' Donnell set two records this past season in the 440 yard freestyle. The two records were the Grove City College pool record and the Penn-Ohio conference record. Jim ' s time was 5:04.3. At the opening relays held at Grove City, Westmin- ster placed sixth. In their opening meet a week later against Slippery Rock, the Titans suffered what was to be their worst defeat of the year, 70-25. Westminster dropped the next two meets to Grove City and Carne- gie Tech, respectively. At the next meet the Grovers again turned back the struggling Titans. The limited schedule found Westminster facing Slippery Rock and Carnegie Tech again. The Titan swimmers dropped these two and their final meet with Allegheny. In the Penn-Ohio Championships Westminster placed fourth, it was here that Jim O ' Donnell set his records. 209 Row 1: J. McNavish, C. Cummerick, W. Douds, R. Douds, Cox, J. Sergi. Row 3: H. BASEBALL The Westminster baseballers of 1961 compiled an excellent 11-2 won-lost rec- ord. Coach Ridl ' s men took nine of eleven conference games and finished as con- ference co-champions with Geneva. Defeats to Geneva and Grove City, each by a single run, spoiled the Titans ' bid for a perfect season. Pacing the Titans from the mound was Gene Susi. Susi had four victories against no losses and an earned run average of 1.17. Bob Douds was second with a 3-2 record and an E.R.A. of 1.72. Warren Sallade and Charley Cummerick each had two wins and no losses, with E.R.A.s of 2.52 and 4.68, respectively. Bob Douds and Dave Schreckengost furnished the big bats for the Titans. Bob was high with an average of .341 and Dave was second with .325. The Titans scored a total of 93 runs and held their opponents to only 31. An excellent combi- nation of pitching, hitting and fielding contributed to the diamond-men ' s fine rec- ord. Last, but not least, the coaching of Charles Buzz Ridl was again a big factor in bringing the Titans to the top. Assisted by Wayne Christy and Carl Kosac, Westminster ' s mentor took advantage of every opportunity, coaching a thinking game rather than an automatic game, and keeping up the hustle and spirit of the players. 210 The Douds brothers — Bob and Bill Season ' s Results WESTMINSTER 4 GENEVA 2 WESTMINSTER 10 SLIPPERY ROCK 5 WESTMINSTER 10 ST. During the 1961 season the Westminster College dropped its first West-Penn Conference meet since the forming of the conference two years ago. The Titans were strong again in the distances, pole vault and high jump, but due to graduation and academic probation Westminster was weak in the dashes. Running the mile and two mile were senior captain Paul Sanders, who holds the school and track records in both these events, Sam WiUiams, a freshman with the desire and ability to keep the Titans placing in the distances after Sanders ' graduation, Dave McLaughlin and Ed Pollack, sophomore and freshman newcomers to the team. In the half-mile Westminster had two great runners in Steve Pekich and Tom Truxel. Steve broke the 54 year old school record set in 1907 by Hugh Lambie. Lambie ' s time was 1:58.0 and Pekich ' s Paul Sanders wins the two mile run. Fred Wilkes going up and over. time was 1:57.2. Sophomore John Dick was the 440 yard man for the Titans. Bill Frenz and Jim Brown ran the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Sophomore letter- man, Bob Thompson, and freshman Ron Hustwit ran the high and low hurdles. In the field events, big Fred Wilkes held the fort at the high jump bar. Fred set school and field records in this event this year, jumping 6 ' 4 . Sophomore G. David Smith, a newcomer this year, did an excellent job high jumping and broad jumping. Wilkes also broad jumped this year. Bob Dunlap and Bill McKnight both cleared 12 ' in the pole vault to furnish the Titans with many 1st and 2nd combinations. In the discus, freshman Jim McCaulgin did a fine job. Bob Alter, Tom Truxel and Wayne Swift threw the javelin and Norm Bemiss and Bob Hannigan were the Titan shot-putters. In their first two meets the thinclads defeated St. Francis and Carnegie Tech. They then lost to Baldwin- Wallace, Grove City and Slippery Rock. Waynesburg fell to the Titans, who took a second place in the West- Penn Conference meet the following week. The Ge- neva team nipped the Titans in their final meet 66-65. 213 TENNIS The 1961 Titan netters were West-Penn Conference co-champions with Geneva. Since the coming of Coach Cleve Oliver in 1959, the Titans have won or tied for the tennis championship. Team co-captains this year were seniors Ray Pierson and Bill Repack. Both Pier- son and Repack have lettered for four consecutive years, and each has lost only two matches in as many years. Ray Pierson was first man and Jim Glaser was second man. Mark Peterson and Bill Repack were third and fourth men, respectively. They were followed in order by Joe Plummer and Tom Cooke. Newcomers this year were sophomores Frank Clark, Jim Glaser, Bill Walker, and junior Tom Cooke. Those who re- ceived letters were: Tom Cooke (1st), Jim Glaser (1st), George Martin (1st), Don McClure (2nd), Mark Peterson (2nd), Joe Plummer (2nd), Ray Pier- son (4th) and Bill Repack (4th). The Titans won their first four matches. They de- feated Grove City in their opening match, 8-1. Then followed a victory over Duquesne 6-3. The netters edged past Carnegie Tech 5-4, and smashed Waynes- burg 8-1. A 5-4 loss to Geneva interrupted the Titans ' winning streak, but they recovered to win their remain- ing four matches. After a 9-0 walloping of St. Francis the Titans took third in the West-Penn matches. The following week the racket-men shut out Waynesburg in a return match, 9-0. A 7-0 partially rained-out match against St. Vincent found the Titans holding their opponents scoreless for the third straight match. A final 6-3 win over Duquesne assured the Titans a share of the West-Penn Conference Championship. Co-Captains Bill Repack and Ray Pierson. The team had six letter- men this year: Senior captain Bob Alter, seniors Bob Dunlap and Wally Growney, juniors Bob Amsdell and George Bilo- wick, and freshman Bob Wheeler. The Titans will be looking for new talents next year with the graduation of four men. The season opened with a triangle match between St. Vincent, St. Francis and Westminster. St. Vincent scored SVi as compared to the Titans ' IV2, and St. Francis scored 5 against 2 for Westmin- ster. The next match was again with St. Vincent, who defeated the Titans for the second straight time, AVi-lVi. Waynes- burg handed the Titan linksmen their fourth loss, 4-3. Westminster then won a triangle match with Duquesne and Car- negie Tech. The Dukes forfeited, 2-0, while the Engineers dropped the match 4Vi-2Vi. The Titans took their third straight by defeating Waynesburg 5-2. The golfers traveled to Latrobe for the W.P.I.A.C. matches, where they took a 5th place. Geneva enabled them to con- tinue their regular season match victo- ries by bowing 7-0. Grove City ' s golfers then put a stop to the now rolling Ti- tans by downing them SVi-lVi. West- minster then finished the season with a 4 to 3 victory over Duquesne. Bob Alter was awarded the senior tro- phy which is presented to three year let- termen. Merely ink on paper . . . though nice to own and enjoy. But to the staff and the adviser the yearbook means much more. For yearbook work comprises a multitude of details: Layout, Art, Photography, Copy, Typography, Covers and Binding (not to mention the small detail of money-raising). Highly technical and often confusing, these details are at the very least time-consuming and a source of anxiety to a staff unless the pubhsher ' s repre- sentative is company-trained to give needed help and suggestions.
