THE 1959 WESTMINSTER COLLEGE NEW WILMINGTON, PA. HUGH FERGUSON, ED. Foreivord You, an alumnus, will in your later years see West- minster ' s campus not as an integral part of your college life, but as an outsider looking in. In this book you will look into the inner workings of administration, into laboratories of science, you will dimly see through smoke-coated windows the brother- hood of Greek organizations. Our camera shows, above all, the magnificent windows of the chapel, symbolizing the Christian ideals of the College. The Titans of ancient Greece have said, Know thy- self ; the Romans practiced the philosophy, Be thy- self ; Jesus the Galilean said, Give thyself. The Argo staff, endorsing all three of these ancient philoso- phies, welcomes you, the reader, to See thyself. 2 Digitized by tine Internet Arcliive in 2014 littps : arcli i ve . o rg detai I s argo 1 959west TABLE OF CONTENTS page 7 page 27 page 39 page 91 page 109 page 149 page 177 page 199 page 220 The students of Westminster College take pride in dedicating the 1958 Argo to Mr. Alfred O. Shaffer, the man who is largely resj)onsible for the beauty of our campus. As the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Mr. Shaffer has contributed many years of invaluable ser- vice to the maintenance of the physical plant of the college. Born near Greenfield in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, Mr. Shaf- fer received his education at the Lackawanna public schools. While attending school he was interested in music and took an active part in church singing. Mr. Shaffer started to work as an apprentice in the building industry, first as a stone mason, then as a plasterer. Later he became a plastering contractor in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Because of his competence in the fields of carpentry, electricity and heating, Mr. Shaffer was invited to become the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds in 1932. Under his capable leadership the de- partment, whose headquarters were located in a barn near the present site of Galbreath Hall, became quite well organized. When the barn burned down in 1940, destroying most of the equipment, the head- quarters was moved to the basement of Hillside Dormitory. After his service in France during World War I, Mr. Shaffer married Dorothy Steel. They are th e parents of three children, two sons and a daughter, and are the grandparents of five. Mr. Shaffer has served as a deacon and is presently an elder in the New Wilmington LTnited Presbyterian Church. Through the years he has used his spare time to pursue his interest in buying and remodeling homes. Mr. Shaffer ' s major concern has always been the beautifying and landscaping of the campus. He supervised the planting of all the lawns on what is now the quadrangle. He has devoted himself tirelessly to the college, working late many nights and being called out often when things have gone wrong. With deep gratitude we dedicate the 1959 Argo to Mr. Alfred Shaffer, a man whose contribution to Westminster College cannot be measured. Dedication 4 The College Who can define a college? We know it is not a location, a campus, a building, or a classroom. Are the students the college? If so, there are as many different definitions of Westminster College as there are students. For college is an experience, and as such it cannot be the same for any two people. All experience changes us. So there has been a change in you, too. We see the world through different eyes than we did four years ago. We came to college, not knowing what was ahead; on the blank wall of life we wrote four years. Those four years make up our conception of Westminster College. We can ' t write nine hundred definitions of our College. Here is the campus in pictures ... we leave the rest to you. 8 9 10 11 13 15 16 17 19 The Glenn Miller bantl, directed by Ray McKinley, introduced the 1958 Homecoming weekend by playing for the Dance of the Year, held at Youngstown ' s Idora Park. The highlight of the dance was the crowning of Queen Jane Houtz, a junior from Coraopolis, Pa. Candidates represented the six national sororities and Quadrangle, and they were voted on by the men students. Students spent Saturday morning on tours of the campus, seeing the displays provided by the fraternities and dormitories. The soror- ities ' floats were viewed before the game. In a close contest the judges selected Alpha Sigma Phi as having the best fraternity decoration; Hillside dormitory won their division and Theta Upsilon won the sorority competition. The Titans presented the returning alumni a 7-0 victory over Geneva College in a well-played game that clinched the West Penn Conference Championship for us. The student-alumni dance was held Saturday night in the Walton- Mayne Union Building. It was the first dance to be held in the new student union, and it proved to be a great success. On Sunday afternoon the choir, directed by Mr. Clarence Martin, presented Handel ' s Creation in an excellent performance that provided a fitting finale to a successful Homecoming weekend. 20 Judy Briggs KD Ann Moorehead TU Joan Curry QUAD. 21 22 23 24 Dear Friends: Memory has value far beyond dollars and cents. This book is designed to help you hold in memory some of your college days. Here you will find how things appeared when you were in college. Since changes occur from year to year, you may find it difficult to recognize once familiar scenes when you return for your tenth or twenty-fifth reunion. This Argo records for you the campus you knew and loved. People also change. Some of your classmates will change greatly in the next few years. You will also change. This edition of the Argo is a permanent record of just how you and yours appeared as college students. It is therefore, a book to be treasured. It will increase in value as the years pass by. It will help to sweep the dust from events covered over by time and distance. We sincerely hope thai you will want to remember all your college experiences. However, college cannot be recorded in a book. It is my earnest prayer that at Westminster you may have secured an adequate education for life. Life ' s hardships will strengthen you, its joys will comfort you, and its sorrows will keep you humble before God. I wish for you all that you deserve. Sincerely, Will W. Orr 28 WILL W. Each year two issues containing prose and poetry composed by the student body are printed. The various themes and interests contained in this magazine offer enjoyable and often thought-provoking reading. Student participation is stimulated through the offering of prizes for outstand- ing contributions in either the poetry or prose sections. Edited by Al Wheeler and supported by a highly se- lective editing staff, the Fall 1958 and the Spring 1959 issues were not only outstanding, but also unique. One of the main purposes of Scrawl is to keep the literature published which not only reflects student feelings and philosophy, but also to remain within the realm of legitimate literature. 132 Information Please During the first semester of each school year, a dili- gent committee of college students publishes a helpful guide booklet Information Please. This booklet fur- nishes a directory of the students ' home addresses and fraternity listings. The directory has proved its worth many times over to hopeful swains, to students who wish to send Christmas cards or to receive vacation news, and to many distraught faculty wives who need baby sitters. Information Please also provides the ad- dresses and telephone numbers of faculty members of the administrative staff. This year ' s staff is headed by Charles Herrick, 1959 editor. Another convenient feature of Information Please is the addition of the complete social calendar for the year as it is arranged by the extracurricular committee. T. Bear, C. Herrick, A. Wheeler, R. Interfraternity Council Interfraternity Council is the supervi- sory and policy-setting organization of the four national fraternities. The Council is the chief representative organization be- tween fraternities and the administra- tion. Composed of three members from each fraternity and the Dean of Men, IFC establishes and administers policies of rushing, pledging, social events and interfraternity, intramural athletic com- petition. The organization annually acts as co-sponsor with Pan-Hellenic Coun- cil of Greek Weekend. As a service pro- ject, IFC contributes to a special fund used for the support of a foreign student on Westminster ' s campus. J. Vignovic, Sec; W. Rankin, Vice-pres.; D. Scott, Pres.; B. Fast, Treas. 152 The all-important job of co-ordinating the activities and solving the problems of six busy sororities is assigned to Pan-Hel- lenic Council. Two girls from each soror- ity, one of whom is the president, are members of Pan-Hell. This organization has charge of soror- ity rushing, pledging and activation. It often serves as an intermediary for the sororities and administration. In the spring Pan-Hell holds a special program for the newly-elected sorority officers to familiarize them with parliamentary pro- cedure. Another project at this time of year is Greek Weekend, which Pan-Hell organizes in cooperation with Interfrater- nity Council. Pan-Hellenic Council Seated: G. Weister, Pres.; M. Alpha Gamma Delta Two of the many pleasant memories which launched the Alpha Gams ' fall semester were the Sing and Swing win of 1958 and the tea which was given in honor of the Alpha Gamma Delta patroness, Mrs. Elmer Beecher Russell. A portrait of Mrs. Russell, painted by Miriam Fox, is now hanging in the new chapter room in Fer- guson Hall. They also caroled at Mrs. Russell ' s home before Christmas vacation. One of the special projects for the sorority this year was the furnishing of the chapter room. The annual Halloween party for the sororities was held in the tunnel which connects Browne Hall and Ferguson Hall. Alpha Gamma Delta also raised money to contribute to a cerebral palsy fund by selling candy . 154 Row 1: M. Pallone, J. Wilson, J. McCuUough, P. Funkhouser, S. Bechtel, P. Black, A. Sherwood, A. The Beta Sigs particularly enjoyed celebrat- ing Founder ' s Day and Christmas at the same time at a party in the home of Beta Sigma Omicron patroness, Mrs. Paul Musser. February was a special month, for the dinner dance in honor of the pledges was scheduled in Mercer. A party for the children at the Mercer Children ' s Home was a featured project, and the annual Beta Sig Ice Cream Social was enjoyed by all the sororities in May. Along with a Christmas party, the girls sold Christ- mas seals, using the proceeds to aid crippled children in Richmond, Virginia. A Christmas basket and tree were presented to a needy family in New Wilmington. In the spring the girls entertained and treated the children of the Mercer Chil- dren ' s Home to an afternoon picnic on campus. The pledge who was outstanding in scholarship was honored at a banquet in the spring, and an award was presented to an organization doing outstanding work in orthopedic research. Sigma Kappa Parties and Altruistic projects comprised the largest part of the Sigma Kappa social year. Among the first events of the winter were the Patroness Coffee Time and the annual Ski Lodge party. Christmas parties were held at Overlook and Elmira, and the actives also held a Christmas party in honor of the pledges. Along with the usual bundles of clothing, mittens were sent to a farm school in Greece as a Christmas present. Another one of the Sig Kap ' s altruistic projects was helping to support the Maine Sea-Coast Mission and each week the girls send favors for the dinner trays at Overlook Sanitarium. To open the new year, a Housemothers ' Breakfast was held in January, and a party was given later in the spring for the children at the home in Mars, Pennsyl- vania. 162 Rolo 1: C. Wright, J. Faculty sponsor, Mrs. Means, and the two patronesses, Mrs. DeHaas and Mrs. Cobb, have given much appreciated help through- out the year ' s program, which included bowling and movie parties, and the annual sit and sip in April. Also, Quadrangle members will never forget the Christmas party sponsored for the children ' s home in Mercer. The rest of the athletic year looks quite promising and they are looking forward to successful seasons in the remaining intramural sports. Socially, the year was characterized by several house parties. The Christmas formal was held at The Jack- town Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The well-balanced Blue and White nine won the District 30 NAIA championship and was given con- sideration for the NCAA Regional Tournament at Springfield, Mass. The squad won the championship of Pennsylvania by coming from behind to edge Indiana State Teachers. Other key victories included a pair of one-run decisions over Du- quesne University by 8-7 and 1-0 scores. The Titans turned giant killer against a highly touted University of Pittsburgh team by defeating the Panthers 6-4. The team had many stars including pitchers Ben Brenner and Bob Duvall, first baseman Jack Pogue, third baseman Glenn Smith, outfielder Tom Parks, and catcher George James. Brenner set a new school record for victories in a single season by turning back seven opponents and dropping only one. At one point Brenner hurled 25 1 3 scoreless innings which included a 1-0 victory over Duciuesne. Duvall had a 5-0 record and Glenn Smith won two games. Pogue anfl Parks backed the Titans with lofty hitting averages. Pogue was the leader with a .403 mark and Parks was close behind at .400 even. These two and Smith gave the Titans plenty of long ball power, while James showed superb skill in handling the pitchers and had many timely hits. The only loss of the season came at Slippery Rock, May 12, when the game- weary Titans dropped an 8-4 decision. The Titans had previously beaten theRock- ets 5-2 on the home diamond. 179 The Titan netters helped contribute to a winning spring season in 1958 by winning eight and losing five matches over district opposition. For the sake of statistics, the team played three thousand two hun- dred-forty games, two hundred seventy-six sets, and one hundred seventeen matches. One of the highlights of the season is emphasized in that the team won five of its last six matches. Prospects for next season are optimistic, since six lettermen will return. Coach James Garland did a fine job with a largely inexperienced team, having only three returning lettermen in Dale Garver, Chuck Herak, and Don Hoover. Freshmen Ray Pierson, Don McClure, Bill Repack and sophomores Bill Rankin and Dick Kauffman had no college tennis experience prior to this season, but performed admirably and were instrumental in the team ' s winning season. Captain Dale Garver paced the team with twelve singles victories in thirteen matches. Ray Pierson with a 10-3 record, and Chuck Herak with 9-4, ranked second and third on the team. Garver and Pierson led the team in doubles triumphs with eleven wins in thirteen tries. Tennis Row 1: W. Rankin, R. Pierson, C. Herak, D. Hoover. Row 2: W. Repack, J. Garland, D. Garver, R. The Titan thinclads posted a 7-2 record in dual com- petition, the only setbacks coming at the hands of the University of West Virginia and Slippery Rock State Teachers College. In the Tri-State meet held at Westminster on lay 17, Slippery Rock was favored to win the event, but the Titans piled up 66 ' points to outclass the Rockets, who finished a distant second. Sopho- mores Felton Brown and Ron Minnie led the Titans to their upset victory. Brown won the 100 and 220 yard dashes in record-breaking time, while Minnie won the 220 yard low hurdles and placed second in both the 100 yard dash and the 120 yard high hurdles. Brown displayed Olympian speed in the sprints with a 9.5 seconds 100 yard dash time and 20.9 seconds in the 220 yard dash. Freshman Fred Wilkes was another high scorer for Westminster as he won the high jump and finished second in the broad jump. 181 Football The Titans surprised their followers by scoring four successive victories at the beginning of the 1958 season. In the opener at Green- ville a wet field bogged the Titan attack, but the Blue and White won the game, 14-6. One week later the Titans convinced their fans that they were again a district powerhouse when they returned home to crush Waynesburg, 46-0. Four touchdowns were scored in the final period, although Coach Burry had already cleared the bench. Follow- ing a victory over St. Vincent the next week, Westminster treated the Homecoming Day fans to a 7-0 victory over Geneva, clinching the West Penn Conference championship. Two undefeated teams clashed on October 25, and at the end of the game both teams remained undefeated. Westminster and Juniata played to a 21-21 deadlock, as both teams performed brilliantly. Two long pass plays from Jack Bestwick to Jack Barnes featured the Titans ' scoring, while Bill McConnell kicked the important extra points. The Titans rolled over Indiana State Teachers College and Slippery Rock State Teachers College on successive weekends, but they finally met defeat the next week. On a rain-soaked field in a sea of mud Carnegie Tech squeezed out one touchdown to defeat Westminster, 6-0. However, the Titans finished with an excellent 6-1-1 record. Quarterback Jack Bestwick was honored as the outstanding dis- trict j layer of the year, and President Will W. Orr was honored as the man who has done the most for small college football during the past year. He is the first president of the West Penn Conference. End Fred Fred ' ilkes was also named to one of the all-district teams. G. James, J. Barnes, Co-captains. 182 Ih 24 ,30 22 3 9 _ 2 42 S0| 28 47, i Row 1: R. Uncapher, J. Martin, D. Edwards, J. The Titan harriers compiled a 7-3 rec- ord, captured a gold medal berth in the Western Penn- sylvania Conference meet, and took second place in the annual Tri-State meet. Pitt ' s, Carnegie Tech ' s and Slippery Rock ' s squads were the only successful teams to outrun the Blue and White speedsters. In the West Penn Conference, West- minster grabbed four out of the first five places to clinch first place among eight competing schools. Paul Sanders and Tom Truxell were outstanding runners for the Titans, both winning the right to run in the NAIA meet at Omaha, Nebraska. Sanders cap- tured 9th place in this nationwide contest. The two senior members of the squad were Captain Jerry Paul and Pete Marshall. Others who were instru- mental in the winning season were: Leroy Shaw, Dick Stone, Drew Byers, Joe Stewart, Bob Goode, and Chuckle Davis. Rowl: R. Colman, W. Seeley, D. Lydic, W. Filbern, R. Willis, P. Sanders, G. Trimble, G. Meyers. Row 2: Mr. Burry, W. Armour, T. Mansell, D. McClure, F. Scott, J. O ' Donnell, A. Rose, E. Saurman. Coach Burry ' s swimming squad finished their winter campaign lacking victories, but hopeful of a bright future. The Titan swimmers won only one of seven meets but gained valuable experience, since the entire squad is made up of underclassmen. Led by freshman Jim O ' Donnell and sophomore Al Rose, the Burry- men impressed many observers with their late season form. The sin- gle victory came at Morgantown, West Virginia where the Titans defeated West Virginia 47-39. Rod Willis, Jerry Trimble, Al Rose, and Bob Colman swam in the medley relay. Tom Mansell and Don McClure represented Westmin- ster in the 60 yard freestyle, Al Rose and Bill Filbern swam the 200 yard butterfly. Bob Colman and McClure swam the 100 yard free- style, Willis and Don Lydic swam the 200 yard backstroke, O ' Donnell and Wayne Seeley swam the 400 yard freestyle. Rose and Trimble swam the 200 yard breastroke and O ' Donnell, Colman, Seeley and McClure swam in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The freestyle relay event, worth seven points to the victor, was the deciding factor in the last two meets of the season. In losses to Alle- gheny, 40-37, and Grove City, 47-39, this event made a great deal of difference. Fred Scott and Paul Sanders were the Titan divers. Swimming 185 Coach Ri(il. Paced l)y the high scoring of Dave Rankin and Chuck Davis, the Bhie and White ended with an impressive 16-7 mark. This fine won-loss record earned the Titans first place in the West Penn Conference and the NAIA State championship. An early season highlight was the 78-66 victory over the University of Pittsburgh. Davis was brilliant and stole the show from Pitt ' s AU-American candidate Don Hennon. Davis had 33 points while Ilennon bucketed 30. Senior Dave Rankin moved into second place in the all-time scoring column behind Jim Riley. Rankin was nominated for the NAIA little Ail-American award, and Davis was given honorable mention on the UPI Ail- American team. The 5 ' 9 hustler from Brooklyn, N.Y. proved a constant thorn in the side of the opposition. In the second Pitt game, the Titans losing 72-68, Chuck again outscored Hennon 28-22. In the first round of the NAIA play-offs the Blue and White squad avenged Geneva 64-46, and later swamped Mansfield STC, winning a bid to Kansas City. In the Kansas City NAIA tournament the Ridlmen emerged victorious over New Britain, Conn., but the second round found stiffer competition. Although losing 61-58 to a taller Southwest Texas State Teachers team, the Titans made an excellent showing. Captain Dave Rankin. NAIA State Champions 187 Intramural leagues in the three main seasonal sports of football, basketball and softball are sponsored by the physical education department. Both fraternity and independent teams enter into the competition. Trophies are awarded by the college to the first place team in each league, and the champions of fraternity competition are awarded a cup by the I.F.C. Along with fraternity teams are independent teams represent- ing dormitories, campus organizations and the faculty. W.A.A., Women ' s Athletic Association, sponsors intramural leagues in volleyball, basketball and soft- ball. Both sorority and independent teams compete for the league championships. Participation is also active in intercollegiate W.A.A. events, including competitive swimming.
