Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1968 volume:

MV “It begins in delight, it inclines to the impulse, it runs a course of lucky events, and ends in a clarification of life — not necessarily a great clarifica¬ tion . . . but in a momentary stay against confusion.” Robert Frost IN MEMORIAM RHEA B. WILLIAMSON “As one who looks on a face through a window, through life I have looked on God. Because I have loved life, I shall have no sorrow to die. Rhea B. Williamson knew no sorrow in dying. She lived a full, rich life, striving, with the man she loved so completely, for the goals and ideas in which they believed. She shared in the making of Westminster Choir College, and it remained a precious part of her life. We are grateful for the concern she had, not only in the college as an institution, but in the lives and futures of its students. Amelia Josephine Burr DR. GEORGE LYNN “Never measure the height of a mountain until you have reached the top. Then you will see how low it was.” In appreciation to Dr. George Lynn, who by word and example has challenged and inspired us to be better than our best, to care about ourselves and our fellow man, and to search for meaning and excellence in all that we do. His interest in us as individuals as well as musicians has been a constant source of support and encouragement throughout our years at Westminster. from Hammarskjold ' s Markings DEDICATION With a touch of humor, a sense of proportion, a sin¬ cere warmth and honesty, and a deep love for life, music, and his God, he has made working with him a privilege and knowing him a treasured experience. Because our lives have become just that much better since we have both worked with and known him, the class of 1 968 dedicates this edition of the Quadrangle to MR. ROBERT CARWITHEN We believe that ours is a time of unprec¬ edented opportunity for the musician when we realize that we can perform for more people in one half-hour on television than have entered Carnegie Hall in 25 years or J. S. Bach played to in all his lifetime. Here’s hoping that you will want to con¬ tinue to grow musically, intellectually, and spiritually in the days to come through self- study, practice, listening, reading, exposure to other teachers and institutions and influ¬ ences that can augment and reinforce, and association with others who are trying to grow as well. To you of the class of 1 968 go especially warm greetings and best wishes for the years to come. V THE DEAN (not pictured) Helen Coleman Secretary For his perpetual efforts to assist and sup¬ port the students of Westminster in all their endeavors, for attracting and maintaining a superior faculty, and for developing and sustaining curricula stressing excellence in a college education, we express our gratitude to Dr. Edward F. J. Eicher. THE BOARD KENNETH CHORLEY Born in Bournemouth, England, Dr. Kenneth Chorley came to the United States at the age of seven, and was educated at the Manlius School in New York. Now that commencement day is almost upon us and we are about to say goodbye to you, I want again to tell you that your class has made a memorable contribution to the life of the Choir College over the past four years and will certainly be much missed. The growing acceptance of the “Arlington” Carillon is good news for organists! Schulmerich is the world’s ONLY producer of modern bell instruments with both English and Flemish type tuning, as well as chimes, thus providing percussion in¬ struments to meet the requirements of any church or institution. Both bell instru¬ ments have all the traditional partials, including the rich, colorful minor third distin¬ guishing a true bell tone from chimes which lack this quality. The Schulmerich “Arlington” Carillon is the ONLY modern instrument having the sub-octave hum tone which together with its other partials identifies the Flem¬ ish type tuning. All types of harmony, major, minor, augmented, or diminished chords or any other type of chord, arpeggio or trill, can be played without restric¬ tion. With its 61 bells, 5-octave chromatic range, played from one key¬ board, all types of cari I Ion i stic effects are possible. Individual expression pedal controls for bass and treble bells provide wide dynamic range for solo and accom¬ paniment so necessary to true carillon music. Truly, the “Arlington” is the 20th Century carillon embodying the tradition and color of the finest cast bell instrument. While retaining all the desirable features of cast bell carillons, weight, huge tower construction, keyboard limitations, complex automatic operation and enormous cost are eliminated. If you’ve dreamed of the unfettered use of bells from the tower or with the organ, investigate the “Arlington” Carillon now! Write to: SCHULMERICH CARILLONS, INC. It is a difficult task to compile a yearbook. I ' m sure that most of you realize this. My staff and I also realize this, and we have tried our best to do a good job and to create something different for you. It is almost impossible not to make mis¬ takes in compiling a yearbook, so I’m sure some will be found, and I ' ll soon hear about them. May I just say that when you approach me about something you didn ' t like, be assured that your name will be added to the list of next year ' s staff members, because they could use you. We’ve all heard the saying, you can’t please everyone,’’ so we didn’t try to. Often you plan for something and a crisis manages to take away those plans. I do not mean to say that I disliked working on the yearbook. On the contrary, I greatly enjoyed it and I have learned much. I feel that we have had the best staff that the college has had for some time. I would like to thank them now. I would like to thank Kay Fowler, our literary editor, for her fine job of compil¬ ing interesting quotes and write-ups; Richard Ratcliffe, who did an excellent job in photographing events and organizations; William Nash, who spent hours in obtaining advertisements; and Kathe Swab whose cover design is a revelation to the school. I would especially like to thank Lynn Massey who unselfishly gave of much of her time in doing many different jobs. Also, many thanks go to Nancy Pastore. Thanks also go to the other staff members who contributed of their time and talents. Two were especially outstanding: Robert Edwards, who organized picture taking and helped with layouts; and Allan Ontko, who did a tremendous job on some of the more difficult layouts. We also received much help from non-staff members. Mickey Lazenby, who wrote the In Memoriam,’’ Karen Clinton, who drew our musical cartoons, and Alayne Abbey, Wylie Aaron, Pam Beaird, Algene Klesitz, Carole Holston, Con¬ nie Fee, and Kathleen Sailor, who helped with layouts, advertising, and proof¬ reading. At this time I would like to thank four special people who gave the staff a great amount of help. First, is Irene Jervis who helped me in the mimeograph room. Mr. Pate donated his time and many of his photographs to add a great deal to our edition. Next comes Mr. Thomas, our advisor, whose help was invaluable. Last is Mrs. Wible who kept the public relations area of yearb ook running smoothly, and I cannot thank her enough. I would also like to thank our patrons and adver¬ tisers, Glick Photography Studios, and Taylor Publishing Company. Last of all, may I say that some of you will not like what you see in this edition. Rest assured that there was a definite reason for everything you see. You need only ask. But, before you do, ask yourself if you were a responsible student who fulfilled all the wishes of a staff whose main interest was to have a complete, ac¬ curate, and creative yearbook. Only you can make next year s edition better. FINIS!
