We search, reaching for new meaning and under¬ standing; we serve, giving of that which we find; and we share, finally, uniting ourselves with all those who strive for common goals. It is our hope that within these pages you will find a record of the searching, serving, and shar¬ ing which have been a part of your life here. In our era, the road to holiness necessarily passes through the world of action.” In appreciation to Dr. George Lynn who came to the Choir College with us four years ago. He has given all of us through Symphonic and West¬ minster Choirs the ability to see into our corpo¬ rate selves, a knowledge of our personal integrity as leaders, and a sense of choral sound which is part of us. His consideration and help have been available to us as individuals at all times. In appreciation for helping us to know that During a working day, which is real only in God, the only poetry which can be real to you is the kind which makes you become real under God; only then is the poetry real for YOU, the art true. You no longer have time for — pas¬ times.” We have known him as a man who came to Westminster sharing the dream of an¬ other great man, and doing his utmost to fulfill that dream. The Class of 1967 6 from Hammarskjold’s Markings”. It is seldom in a lifetime that one is fortunate enough to know someone with a wealth of tal¬ ents and resources, who gives of them constantly with untiring patience and understanding. In the presence of such a person, it is impossible not to grow both in intellect and spirit. We have been highly privileged to have such an influence in our lives. It is one which has been an inspiration to all of us, guiding us to greater understanding of the studies we pursue, the music we sing, and finally, of our place as individ¬ uals in a changing world. It is with the deepest admiration and gratitude that we, the Class of 1967, dedicate this edition of the Quadrangle to DR. PRISCILLA SILZ 7 FouWe is JoJuv PUuEey WittiCUft iSOii Rh Ct; B. WitliCttoi OH; Unselfish sharing and- serving must have al¬ ways been a part of the lives of John Finley and Rhea B. Williamson. They shared with others their ideal of excellence in church musicianship and served as dedicated leaders in this field. Their contagious efforts to promote this ideal have been enlarged to an international scope. We are indeed grateful to these persons whose visions have enriched our lives. 8 MM WJSCRAEKW im Hastings Bristol We can believe that ours is a time of unprecedented opportunity for the musician when we realize that we can perform for more peo¬ ple in one half-hour on television than have entered Carnegie Hall in 25 years or J. S. Bach played to in his lifetime. Here’s hoping that you will want to continue to grow musically, in¬ tellectually, and spiritually in the days to come through self-study, practice, listening, reading, expo¬ sure to other teachers and institu¬ tions and influences that can aug¬ ment and reinforce, and association with others who are trying to grow as well. To you of the Class of 1967 go especially warm greetings and best wishes for the years ahead. Pte idwb 10 From his warm smile and sincere efforts to serve the students and the College, one can declare the ir.dis- pensability of Dr. Eicher as Dean of the College. We all appreciate his hard work in helping to attain Middle Atlantic States accredita¬ tion last spring. Du GJaj uWuL DtcJus i Dv. Go Wjb Lyn v U-uStcy JDVv jdt(yo As Musical Director of the college, Dr. George Lynn exerts a tremendous influence over our lives. He challenges us, not just for a moment, but for a lifetime of striving toward perfection. And as composer, con¬ ductor, arranger, organist, and vocal teacher, he sets an example that is hard to match. It is truly a privilege to work with him. 12 rfl Sooa 1 Oh Trustees 13 THOMAS K. They went with us to Newark as we sang the traditional Messiah” at Old First Church, and when we returned, listened patiently to our mutterings over the wrecked rooms. At Christmas time they decorated” our rooms with a seasonal red glow while we worked on our Christmas Dance, Symphony in White,” complete with parachute ceiling. (Thus began Donna Yamaji’s long career as decorations chairman.) The robes glowed with pride when Bonnie Bird won the Carol Contest for the Class of ’67, taking the trophy from the Class of ’64 who had held it for three years. As the year moved on, the robes went with us to Atlantic City to sing in Conven¬ tion Hall, and on our famous 13-day tour to the South. (They grew Mouseketeer ears briefly when we wanted to take our stuffed animals on tour with us!) They mercifully covered the unsightly bulges in our figures from all the Southern Fried Chicken and ham. But our poor robes were highly insulted when the girls swapped them for coats and ties one day because Mr. Simpson said that was the only proper dress for choir!! They mushed through the World’s Fair Opening Day with us, blowing wildly in the c-c-cold winds of the New Jersey Pavilion. They rustled softly in the spring breezes, approving of the May Day festivities and our freshman attendant, Ellen Severson. And finally, they marched down the aisle of Princeton Chapel with us in our first graduation ceremony. They spent a quiet summer at the bottom of various and sundry trunks, emerging rumpled and dirty to sing Aufersteh’n” the following year! Sophomore year began auspiciously as the robes journeyed to Washington D.C. to sing the Beethoven Ninth. They shook slightly due to our nervousness over our first major performance. On the return trip, the robes grew a little redder than usual when one of the buses caught fire! Then, adorning a few of us who sang, the robes watched the success of our Thanksgiving banquet. The twelve members of our class who made Westminster Choir gave their robes an extra work¬ out in the Mozart Requiem under Scherchen, but they gave them up in favor of brown hooded ones for Carmina Bura- na.” All our robes did quite a bit of traveling that year: The Mahler 2nd with Stokowski, five performances of the Verdi Requiem under Ormandy, and the never-to-be-forgotten Elijah” performance at Dr. McCurdy’s church. Our red robes were right in style (color-wise, that is) for our Valentine’s Dance when the decorations included bon-bon candies hung from the ceiling. Much to our disappointment a red robe was not worn by Mary Banta, our representative, to the May Day ceremonies that spring. At graduation our poor robes became streaked with our parting tears as we all bade Dr. McCurdy farewell. Veni, Creator Spiritus and Leonard Bernstein called our red robes back into action for our Junior year — that year of being on top of the world. The seventeen members of our class in Westminster Choir went to Washington in the midst of the Mahler and used their robes as pillows in the barracks. From the duties assigned them by the sergeant (would you believe latrine duty?) you never would have known the men were toting tie and tails. Springtime kept the robes hurrying around the town of Princeton as we sang Mozart Vespers and the Bach B Minor Mass at McCarter Theat¬ er; and our 40th Anniversary Convocation, the Methodist 200th Anniversary service, and graduation - all at Princeton Chapel. Other concerts this year included the American Bible Society 50th Anniversary by the entire student body and the Mozart Requiem by Westminster Choir at Mr. Carwithen’s church - and of course, Westminster Choir’s well- remembered western tour. The high point of the year was our May Day. David Scott’s red robe cavorted across the qua- drangle as he directed the band in a glorious exposition of Sousa marches. Despite the cold weather our Disneyland Fantasia was a great success and our Junior May Court attendant, Karen Urquhart, didn’t freeze to death after all. We packed our robes for the summer for the last time after graduation this year. Senior year! Was anything ever so traumatic? In between papers for Dr. Duba, orchestration assignments, and Mar- tinology, the robes found time to sing the Messiah in New York with Sir Malcolm Sargent and the Missa Solemnis” with Steinberg. Our Christmas week was a memorable experience for all of us, as the senior girls lined the stairway in their red robes, singing carols. The stars” of the festivities were Beth Barkley and Michael Stairs, who were Mary and Joseph in the manger scene on the quadrangle. All year long, first floor of North Hall trembled and the red robes crashed and burned as weighty matters thundered overhead! The robes made their final journey in the spring to sing with Stokowski once again, this time Beethoven’s Ninth, Lynn’s Gettysburg Address,” and Gabrieli’s In Ecclesiis.” It was a great final Brtinnhilde for the red robes, before we exchanged them for black ones at Commencement. Where will our red robes go now? To some church choir? To graduate school? Or will some of them return again with other freshmen to begin new adventures? 131 PlOill A Post 133 The band played on. The growing acceptance of the “Arlington” Carillon is good news for organists! Schulmerich is the world’s ONLY producer of modern bell instruments with both English and Flemish type tuning, as well as chimes, thus providing percussion in¬ struments to meet the requirements of any church or institution. Both bell instru¬ ments have all the traditional partials, including the rich, colorful minor third distin¬ guishing a true bell tone from chimes which lack this quality. The Schulmerich “Arlington” Carillon is the ONLY modern instrument having the sub-octave hum tone which together with its other partials identifies the Flem¬ ish type tuning. All types of harmony, major, minor, augmented, or diminished chords or any other type of chord, arpeggio or trill, can be played without restric¬ tion. With its 61 bells, 5-octave chromatic range, played from one key- % board, all types of carillonistic effects are possible. Individual expression pedal controls for bass and treble bells provide wide dynamic range for solo and accom¬ paniment so necessary to true carillon music. Truly, the “Arlington” is the 20th Century carillon embodying the tradition and color of the finest cast bell instrument. While retaining all the desirable features of cast bell carillons, weight, huge tower construction, keyboard limitations, complex automatic operation and enormous cost are eliminated. If you’ve dreamed of the unfettered use of bells from the tower or with the organ, investigate the “Arlington” Carillon now! Write to: SCHULMERICH CARILLONS, INC. Montgomery St. Allentown, Pa. 18103 ZURILGEN, DIANA 2901 Crestwater Dr. Topeka, Kansas 66603 165 The job of compiling a yearbook is an enormous one, and cannot be accomplished by one or two people. This book holds within its covers the imagination and hard work of a great many people. It is at this time that we would like to express our appreciation to all those who gave of their time and talent so freely. The yearbook staff worked faithfully and long, and deserve a deep vote of thanks. Par¬ ticular thanks go to Donna Yamaji, the art and layout editor, who spend long hours in artistic labor; thanks are also due Kathy Ruof, assistant editor; Karin Gustafson, typing editor; and photography editors Richard Ratcliffe and Allan Ontko; and our freshman representative, Sarah Miller. Staff members also deserve much praise for their efforts: Ray Weidner, whose art work is something special, and Kathy Mickel of the art staff, and Karen Clinton of the literary staff. We are indebted to Miss Maud Thomas, our advisor, and to the entire Senior class for their collective and individual help. Special thanks to Beth Barkley who wrote our In Appreciation” to Dr. Lynn, and to Margaret Hansen for her help with the class history. To the entire student body goes our gratitude for their cooperation. We are grateful to Taylor Publishing Company and Mr. Norris Ashe for their valuable help, and to all our patrons and advertisers, without whom this book would not be possible. It has been a great pleasure and a most rewarding experience working on the yearbook, and it is our sincere hope that it will be as meaningful to you as it is to us.
