Our path is one of beginning, search, devotion, and accomplishment. This path of growth should not only be a striving for knowledge, but also a devoting of our entire lives. As our path here at Westminster ends, we do not end our path of growth, but strive on for fuller and richer lives. 2 •f 7 X0 Administration and Faculty Freshmen..4. f i Jr ' ! i founders: DR. AND MRS. J. F. WILLIAMSON 4 7 2 UTemoriam There was a man sent from God, whose name was John, whose preparation, purpose, persistence and persuasion combined to give this world a new sense of choral sound. With priest-like devotion to and confidence in the best in humanity he set about attracting people from all walks of life to the vocal approach to choral music. To this man John each tomorrow was a day in which one or more of these people from previous walks of life would find a new expression,—a new height in his choral art. One will never fully fathom the magnetic at¬ traction of this great Christian. However, one facet is clear and is one we should emulate, no one has ever been more available to humankind. His avail ability was not limited to the Winter School and Alumni, but to the many years of Summer School and its constituents, the clinics, the master classes, just anywhere along his busy way he could be found helping someone discover something that was not evidence before. This great servant knew that there would be no maximum effort unless there was JOHN FINLEY WILLIAMSON 1887-1964 in positive direction. Dr. Williamson’s ability to project his imaginative powers into another being was the basis of his conducting technique. Also, he knew the myriad music approaches necessary to prepare the young musician as he learned to use empathy. He knew that knowledgeability alone did not make a con¬ ductor and with this in mind he set about creating and inaugurating departments that would give the student more musical information in order to approach the mysterious world of choral conducting. Along with availability and the ability to teach the very essence of choral conducting, Dr. Wil¬ liamson has left with us a facet of his personality that says, “Face the future with confidence.” Never was he known to want the “pasture” and freedom from creative labor. To spend a “day off” with him was to spend a day speculating on tomorrow’s possibilities and its rewards. Years ago a chapel speaker referred to Dr. Williamson as the one with “Faith to move mountains.” Taken from a speech by Dr. George Lynn 5 Dedication We, the first class of 1965, being in part the first full class of public school music educators to graduate from the Westminster Choir College, feel it fitting and proper to dedicate this edition of the Quadrangle to Dr. Edward Eicher. Because of Dr. Eicher’s devotion, sincere dedication, and loyalty to the college, he has given much of his time and ability to development of the music education program on our campus. Dr. Eicher has shown a sincere interest in every student and has himself exemplified the life and work of a dedicated teacher and musician. In recognition of these qualities and his outstanding leadership ability Dr. Eicher has been appointed acting dean of the college. Through his hard work and effort we carry with us a sense of dedication, patience, sincerity and loyalty to the cause of promoting good music in public schools. 6 Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2 5uicfa ance 7 Uo f ie Gtracfuating Glass: As you who are graduating seniors go out to positions of musical leadership across the country, we watch the launching of your new career with pardonable pride, for the Class of 1965 seems wonderfully representa¬ tive of what this college stands for. “Music not for self-exploitation but the service of others” has been a watchword for this in¬ stitution. May it ever be yours wherever you go in your work in the days to come. —LEE HASTING BRISTOL, JR. President 8 I DJhe Dean We are extremely grateful to Dr. Edward Eicher for assuming the role of acting Dean. His long career as teacher and administrator has given him a sound foundation for such a task and he has readily accepted the re¬ sponsibilities which it entails. Especially rewarding in his capacity as Dean of the College will be the opportunity in June for Dr. Eicher to distribute the diplomas to the first class to graduate under the teach¬ er education program which he helped initiate four years ago. DJPe TJice President Jerold Panas keeps up a busy schedule traveling and making talks in the interest of the college in addition to serving in close association with the President on important administrative matters. We are indebted to him for his wealth of enthusiasm and dedication to the purpose of Westminster. DR. GEORGE LYNN, B.M., M.F.A., L.L.D. Psalm 64:6 enior Gfass Jfistorij Now this is a brief exposition Of a strange and unique coalition. They came from all parts, To study the arts, And bring their desires to fruition. And so began our first year, A mixture of joy and of fear. But soon we were righted, Were orientated, And were off to pursue our career. In search of that choral mystique, We strengthened our vocal physique. We grunted and groaned. But all was condoned. In pursuing Westminster technique. Now some thought it purely sedition When we added the Education partition. But all became clear, By the end of the year— We could all improve human condition. Our second year task was specific. In Czech, we became quite prolific. We “Slave tvo ye’d” What had to be said, And conquered the Mass Glagolithic. The next year, as would be our luck, We had a new leader to buck. But we soon were won over, Just like “Red Rover”, And were just like a great sitting duck. The last year our concerts came quickly— Yes, monthly, daily, and weekly. We made such great haste, No one could keep pace, But there just wasn’t time to be sickly. And so as we end this endeavor Of living and working together. May the truth be revealed, That whatever our field, We must all remain students forever. D. Cft 7ri()uie In the twenty-five years since he succeeded Carl Weinrich as head of our organ department, Dr. Alexander McCurdy has been such a devoted and faithful member of the Westminster family that we all feel a sense of loss at his retirement from our campus this year. The entire student body has been inspired and encouraged by this great personality and realizes that Dr. McCurdy has brought to Westminster something very special that will endure long after he leaves. First and foremost Dr. McCurdy is a dedicated Churchman, having served as a Church musician for nearly fifty years. For more than thirty-five of those years he has directed the music of the First Presbyterian Church (formerly the Second Presbyterian Church) of Philadelphia, where for many years major choral works were performed each Sunday. His dedication to the Church has been the foundation for his life work. Dr. McCurdy is recognized far and wide as a master teacher and is highly re¬ spected both by his colleagues and his students. In this capacity, he has been the head of the organ department of Curtis Institute in Philadelphia since 1930. His students, who have attained high positions all over the country, include David Craighead, Donald McDonald, George Markey, Richard Purvis, and Thomas Schippers—to name only a few. It should also be mentioned here that Dr. McCurdy has served as consultant for the building of many fine organs all over the nation. Since his New York debut in Town Hall in 1926, Dr. McCurdy has been recognized as a recitalist of great stature and has toured regularly. His recitals with his wife, harpist Flora Greenwood, have been enjoyed throughout the country. When many of us think of Dr. McCurdy, however, we consider him above all a warm and genuine person, vitally interested in each of us and eager to give help and guidance in any way, be it professional or personal. His tireless energy and de¬ votion to his work among us, despite his many other responsibilities, are a living example for all of us who aspire to serve through the ministry of music. We are deeply grateful to Dr. McCurdy for his service among us here at West¬ minster and pray that God will continue to prosper his work wherever he is. 1964 u j fere CTlm S7 jBorcC Sencf JlCt e S ra duafion CAcfcfr f ress Sr. CRoy Jfarris GhapeJ Choir The Chapel Choir, under the direction of Robert Simpson, is composed of Freshmen and transfer students. J. The growing acceptance of the Arlington” Carillon good news for organists! Schulmerich is the world’s ONLY producer of modern bell instru¬ ments with both English and Flemish type tuning, as well as chimes, thus providing percussion instruments meet¬ ing the requirements of any church or institution. Both bell instruments have all the traditional partials, including the rich, colorful minor third distin¬ guishing a true bell tone from chimes which lack this quality. The Schulmerich Arlington” Carillon is the ONLY modern instrument hav¬ ing the sub-octave hum tone which together with its other partials iden¬ tifies the Flemish type tuning. All types of harmony—major, minor, aug¬ mented, and diminished chords or any other type of chord, arpeggio or trill, can be played without restriction. With its 61 bells, 5 octave chromatic range, played from one keyboard, all types of carillonistic effects are possible. Indi¬ vidual expression pedal controls for bass and treble bells provide wide dynamic range for solo and accom¬ paniment so necessary to true caril¬ lon music. Truly, The Arlington” is the 20th Century carillon embodying the tradi¬ tion and color of the finest cast bell instrument. While retaining all the desirable features of cast bell carillons, undesirable factors such as tremendous weight, huge tower const ruction, key¬ board limitations, complex automatic operation and enormous cost are eliminated. If you’ve dreamed of the unfettered use of bells from the tower or with the organ, investigate The Arlington” Carillon now! Write to: SCHULMERICH CARILLONS, INC. Bristol, Jr. CHcAn owledgmenis The compilation of a yearbook is a complicated process involving many people much time, co-operation and responsibility. I would like on this final page of copy to express my deep gratitude to the many people who have helped in this endeavor. My staff deserves much credit for the work accomplished. This staff was made up by Frances Ann Cave, Assistant Editor; Irene Szabo, Business Manager; Claudia Harvey, Layout Editor; Judy Salveson, Literary Editor; Robert Turner, Photography Editor. In view of the fact that members of our staff were student teaching, some responsibilities were taken over by other members of the staff. Laudella Foulkes and John Tuttle carried on with the business of advertising and Sue Holland, Pat Krause, Carolyn Ryder, Joan Clark, Beverly Gutshall and Cindy Jones were of great help to me. I would also like to thank Dr. Bristol, Dr. Lynn, Mrs. Wetherson, and Mrs. Holt for the help and advice they have offered so graciously. Dr. Eicher, our advisor deserves a special thanks for his unfailing kindness and his untiring help and advice. I would also like to thank all other students, faculty members, parents and advertisers who helped to make this book possible. Mr. Norris Ashe of Taylor Publishing Company worked with the staff from beginning to completion. Merin Studios Inc. of Philadelphia provided the class pictures. Orren Jack Turner photographed Westminster Choir and Chapel Choir. The Senior Class provided some of its members to write such outstanding re¬ membrances as the Class History, Lyn Ricker and Carol Thornhill; the Dedication, Jesse Coston; “A Tribute”, Dawn Woodward; and “In Memoriam” paraphrased by Anne Paul. We hope this book will restore the academic years and will bring fond remem¬ brances in the years to come. J.
