Varsity Cheerleaders: Jan Davolt, Lois Vix, Kerry Hubin, Conney Rau, and Ruth Knickman. CHEERLEADERS RADIATE PEP The Eagle cheerleaders swing to the rhythm of the Westmar school song. 158 Enthusiasm ... Energy . . . Spirit . . . Bounce . . . At each football and basketball game, the Westmar cheerleaders lead the school in their enthusiastic yells for victory. These five girls— Jan Davolt, Kerry Hubin, Ruth Knickman, Conney Rau, and Lois Vix—were chosen in the spring of 1965. Ruth Knickman was se- lected as head cheerleader. Working just as hard as the athletes, these girls created new cheers and promoted the school spirit at games. At a special assembly in the fall, four fresh- man were chosen as “B” squad cheerleaders. Jan Brown, Diane Hazel, Jan Pankonin and Sherry Rochholz radiantly lead the spectators in school cheers at wrestling matches and B-squad basketball games.

CROSS COUNTRY For coach Wayne Marty and his “fighting eleven,’ it was primarily a rebuilding year, although outstanding per- formances were turned out by certain team members. Distance aces, David Leaming, and Ron Barr—6th and 4th place conference medalists respectively—proved to be outstanding harriers with John LaRoque, Richard Stein, Bill Dennler, Greg Juenemann, and Gary Deniston form- ing most of the team nucleus. Bill Oliver, Donald Trost, Chuck Harris, and Denny Fry also pushed for team posi- tions. The team finished with a 1—3 dual meet record. Westmar outran Graceland, but fell short to Concordia, Midland and Augustana. Two third place and one second place finishes in triangular meets, a fourth place showing in a quadrangular and a third place finish in the conference meet brought an end to the season. Dave Leaming leads the Eagles over rugged cross country terrain. Run faster! Try harder! The pressure is on even at the beginning of a practice run. 157
