DETERMINATION AND WORK The 1964 edition of Westmar College’s Fighting Eagle football team was one of success. It included the school’s first Tri-state conference football title. The 1965 edition is no less spectacular. The Eagle team repeated as champs of the Tri-state confer- ence by tying Midland’s conference record of 5—1. The Eagles overall record is 7—1—1. Never before had there been a repeat champion in the Tri-state conference. The 1965 season provided a chance for the Eagle football team! 146 The enthusiasm and desire were present when head coach Jack Scott and his assistants began conditioning the squad for the coming season. As the season drew nearer the spirit increased. The Eagles wanted that championship for the second consecutive year. The first test for the Eagles was a non-conference game against Graceland. Westmar came shining through with a 21—0 victory. ROW 1—Bob Strouse, Bob Shaw, Dennis Eckhoff, Don Huggins, Bob Ferguson, and Ed Anstey; ROW 2 —Brian Maxwell, Dave Peterson, Nick Alexander, Mervin Heitritter, and Don Wagner; ROW 3—Lowell Baerenwald, Dick Gruber, Jim Galyen, Lyle Bracken, Randy Heath, Christensen, Dave Chittenden, Lowell Ensey, Jim Van Pelt, Curt Houston, and Bob Taylor; ROW 5—Joe Sa- mojedny, Bud Smith, John Giroski, Hal Kuck, Don Aus- tin, and Rich Wendt. and Keith Krueger; BRING CHAMPIONSHIP In the next three conference games against Sioux Falls, Northwestern, and Concordia victories were in the offering for the Eagles. Then came a close defeat by Midland in a hard fought contest, the final outcome being 12—7. There still remained a good chance for Westmar to gain that championship. Seriously hampered by injuries the Eagles traveled to Bethel for a non-conference game and returned with a 13—13 tie. The following week the Westmar Eagles went up against Dana and pulled out a 14—0 win giving the Eagles a 4—1 record. This set the stage for Westmar’s contest against Yankton, who had pre- 147 viously beaten Midland. In order to get their lions share of the conference title, the Eagles needed a victory here. But first Westmar warmed up for Yankton by de- feating Tarkio 46—26 in a non-conference game. The game against Yankton was. the most exciting game of the season. With only a few minutes left to play Westmar scored the final touchdown and extra point to come away with a 14—13 victory. Westmar’s conference championship for the second consecutive year was a first for the conference. Thus the 1965 edition of Westmar’s fighting Eagle football tearn closed with a victory ride for the coach and a second straight gold football. ROW 4—Terry a gain for Strouse. Repeats from last year’s selections were Hal Kuck and Bob Ferguson. Kuck is on the conference team for the third time, while Ferguson has been chosen to the team twice in as many years. Joining Kuck and Ferguson on the offensive unit was guard Phalen Schuler. Schuler was on the honorable mention list last year but made all conference this year. Kuck this year snagged 28 passes good for 327 yards and seven touchdowns. ‘Fergy’” broke the school rushing record pounding out 1,107 yards. Defensively the Eagles were represented by Larry Smrcka. Smrcka played middle guard for the Eagles. Larry made numerous tackles and intercepted passes to lead the defensive unit this year. Eight more Eagles received honorable mention: Dave Hantke, tackle; Dave Else, halfback; Carl Ades, kick- er; Terry Christensen, quarterback; John Schoolen, guard; Bob Strouse, halfback; Dave Chittenden, half- back; and Gary Hoffman, end. NAIA HONORS Individually football laurels did not end with Tri- state conference honors. Three Westmar players were voted to the District 15 NAIA team (Iowa Division). Hal Kuck placed for the third year on the team. Not only an outstanding offensive end, Kuck did the punting for the Eagles and averaged 39 yards a punt for 31 punts. Bob Ferguson not only broke the school rushing rec- ord for the second straight year, but also led the squad in scoring crossing “pay dirt” for eight TD’s. Gary Hoffman, a defensive end, gave the Eagles a big boost this year in stopping the end sweeps. Gary was also named most valuable player by his team- mates. Westmar opened its season with a victory over Ne- braska State, North Dakota State, and Northern State in a quadrangular meet. Westmar next easily handled Southern State, 47— 0, with State claiming only four points in the in- dividual matches. The Eagle Grapplers next handled Drake easily by a 41—5 score. Dakota Wesleyan found Westmar too strong. West- mar’s wrestlers came out on top, 43—3. Huron also fell to the Westmar Eagles. The West- mar wrestlers won easily by a 34—3 score. The list of wrestling talent assembled at Westmar this year is excellent. Don Huggins, a senior from Maxwell, Iowa, has thus far compiled a 4—1—1 record. The basketball squad entered Tri-State conference play against Midland with a victory. The squad then traveled to Concordia and another victory. Westmar hosted North- eastern and won giving the squad a 6—5 overall record. Westmar is led this year by numerous outstanding athletes. Jim Sutherland, the single season record holder, is off to his best start averaging 29.4 points a game through 10 contests. Orval Biever is again playing expertly after missing part of last season. Biever is averaging 14.2 points a game. 168 Roger Moller controls the boards at Morning- side. Ron Wiltgen, starting where he left off last year, is again scoring in double figures. He is averaging 12.6 points a game. Art Ashley again is a team leader. Besides being a good scorer, Ashley snags his share of rebounds. Roger Moller, the big center, is a valuable asset to the Westmar squad. Moller is averaging 7.1 points a game. He is also leading in rebounds with an average of 10.3. Eagle bench strength is playing an important part in the success of Westmar’s basketball team. Ron Schroeder, Art Oordt, and Paul Frerking were assets to the back court.
