This fact is undoubtedly what makes them wel1-rounded individuals, adaptable to situations besides the ivor towers of academia y . Several of our teachers have their own businesses. Mrs. Joyce BeMiller, for example , owns a boutique shop. Mr. Penwell operates a carpentery business during summer months, and4'Mr, Gascho's television shop is busy all year long. Mr. Glore does special decorating jobs for lucky customers, and Mr. Kubit entertains for groups with his magic Shows, Mrs, I-1, Miller and her husband own a music store. Several of our teachers had former professions. Miss Doyle was a nurse, and Mrs. Thomas was a buyer for Ayres. Mr. Payton began his athletic career playing for the Philadelphia Warriors and the Indian- apolis Olympians. Another former pro athlete was our new teacher Mr. Sparks, who played baseball for the New York Giants and the Chicago White Sox. 72 Some of our teachers have changed their teaching areas. Mr. Mertz was a principal, Mrs. I-laflich taught music at Nora, and Mrs. Hess taught music and English. Mrs. Taylor was once a kindergarten teacher, and Mrs. B. Miller, a former gyrnnast, was a physical education teacher. Our teachers also extend themselves to other areas involving the teaching of young people. Mr. Ufkes is active in 4-H work, and Mr. Peterson meets with Young Life groups. Mr. Van Sickle acts as chaperon.. guide on treks through New Mexico with groups during the summers. Many teachers' summer jobs reflect their interest in teaching. Mrs. Hall worked at Grandview's play- ground last summer, while Mrs. Morfordworked on a youth-tutoring prograi-n,and Mrs. Alley on a math curriculum study. Perhaps some of the diversity of our staff stems nom varied backgrounds of the members. Mrs Crawley, for example, comes to us hom New York, while Mrs. Sagalowsky is recently arrived from Denmark. All of these individuals combine their talents to make up a fine staff at Westlane.
