fl 'gl 1? ,gf Mr. Hobson, Westlane's outstanding principal, is a native Hoosier who came to lndianapolis from Hartford City. After graduating from Shortridge High School, he entered Indiana University. While at l.U. , he received his Bachelor's Degree of Science. He went on to Stanford University and earned his Master's Degree of Science. While at Stanford, he was the assistant basketball coach. After completion of pro- ductive and rewarding college years, Mr. Hobson played two years of professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals' organization. His military years were spent in the Air Force. Mr. Hobson then entered the teaching profession, beginning his career at Carmel in Cal- ifornia. Mr. Hobson is married and has four children. His hobbies, reflecting his love of action, are golf and skiing. He sees skiing as an excellent way to enjoy family to getherness, and his whole family enjoys the sport in Northern Michigan. When asked about West- lane's strongest points, Mr. Hobson said he thought the school had one of the finest pro- fessional staffs in Indiana. He also added that he thought the broad ethnic experience, which Westlane students have, is a definite plus as a cultural opportunity, and a good intro- duction to the real world be- yond the school walls. Principal Hobsong Vice-Principals Cleveland and Ogle, Head Westlane. Mr, Cleveland has been at Westlane for eleven years. He graduated from Thornton Fractional Township High School, which is in a suburb of Chicago, where he was born. He then attended Butler University, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in English and Science, He also has a Master of Science degree in Educational Guidance and Counseling. During college Mr. Cleveland was outstanding in drama. He also served as editor of the BUTLER COLLEGIAN, was on the yearbook staff, and was quite accomplished in writing poetry. After beginning his teaching career at Orchard Elementary School, Mr, Cleveland came to Westlane where he taught special education. He spent his summers in swimming pool management and lifesaving. Mr. Cleveland is married and has two boys, a seventh grader and an eighth grader, He spends his evenings working with his sons and pursuing his hobby of near-professional ex- pertise in working with stereo equipment. Mr. Cleveland says he en- joys the challenge of counseling and working with students in all kinds of roles and relationships, and that he finds his job at Westlane challenging and re- warding. S 1. J - -1 Kids! was the answer Mr. Ogle, Westlane's Student Co.. ordinator, gave when asked, What is Westlane's strongest point? Westlane is one of the outstanding junior highs in the township, continued Mr. Ogle. I hope we can achieve both academically and socially. Mr. Ogle, known to some as T.O. , was born in Richmond, Indiana, and there attended Richmond High School Active in sports and particularly menacing to visiting school's football teams, Mr. Ogle won a football scholarship to Moore.. II head State College in Kentucky. He later attended Indiana State College on a football scholar- ship and coached baclcfield there. Mr. Ogle obviously answer- ed, Sports! when asked about his hobbies. However, music is a big item with him, as well, particularly modern rock. Another interest our versatile administrator has is his favorite pastime of watching and part- icipating in dragster racing. Mr. Ogle is married and has a two year old daughter named CaRen. He began his teaching career at North Central where he taught physical education and health in 1970-71. The following year Westlane was the lucky recipient of his tal- lents in working with students.

This fact is undoubtedly what makes them wel1-rounded individuals, adaptable to situations besides the ivor towers of academia y . Several of our teachers have their own businesses. Mrs. Joyce BeMiller, for example , owns a boutique shop. Mr. Penwell operates a carpentery business during summer months, and4'Mr, Gascho's television shop is busy all year long. Mr. Glore does special decorating jobs for lucky customers, and Mr. Kubit entertains for groups with his magic Shows, Mrs, I-1, Miller and her husband own a music store. Several of our teachers had former professions. Miss Doyle was a nurse, and Mrs. Thomas was a buyer for Ayres. Mr. Payton began his athletic career playing for the Philadelphia Warriors and the Indian- apolis Olympians. Another former pro athlete was our new teacher Mr. Sparks, who played baseball for the New York Giants and the Chicago White Sox. 72 Some of our teachers have changed their teaching areas. Mr. Mertz was a principal, Mrs. I-laflich taught music at Nora, and Mrs. Hess taught music and English. Mrs. Taylor was once a kindergarten teacher, and Mrs. B. Miller, a former gyrnnast, was a physical education teacher. Our teachers also extend themselves to other areas involving the teaching of young people. Mr. Ufkes is active in 4-H work, and Mr. Peterson meets with Young Life groups. Mr. Van Sickle acts as chaperon.. guide on treks through New Mexico with groups during the summers. Many teachers' summer jobs reflect their interest in teaching. Mrs. Hall worked at Grandview's play- ground last summer, while Mrs. Morfordworked on a youth-tutoring prograi-n,and Mrs. Alley on a math curriculum study. Perhaps some of the diversity of our staff stems nom varied backgrounds of the members. Mrs Crawley, for example, comes to us hom New York, while Mrs. Sagalowsky is recently arrived from Denmark. All of these individuals combine their talents to make up a fine staff at Westlane.
