For example, our classes were sprinkled with lighter moments. Shown here is one of Mrs. Haflichlg seventh grade English classes. During the 1963- 1964 school year this class, like many others at Westlane, participated in many debates, discus- sions, and panels, all of which stimulated the average Westlaner's interest in his mother tongue The eighth grade art classes were a welcome relief from formal learning and encouraged creativity among Westlane students. The new lan- guage labs for the freshman were both enjoyable and educational. Needless to say, everyone en- joyed his lunch period, where such weighty Sub- jects such as hairdos, clothes, sports, Beatles Qlj, and teachers were discussed. These and other di- versions helped to retain our interest and made this year at 'Westlane memorable. One of the most coveted awards, presidency of the student council, was earned by Jim Brom- ley. This accomplishment required both academic and social achievement. A position on the high honor roll or honor roll could be obtained without any extracur- ricular work. An average of 3.5 or above was required to make the high honor roll, and an average of 3.2 to 3.49 was needed to make the honor roll. This year a new plaque accented the trophy case. It was earned by the 1963 Hi-Lights staff for winning second place in the Scholastical Press Association competition of Columbia Uni- versity. Another entry has been made, and weire sure the results will be successful. t SCIENCE FAIR WIN . R0w1:Lmda Bernstorf Debby Reed CaItl1ERCl k B 11 Dorothy Feiblcm B vb . The trees in the hall, as well as the decorations in the library, office, and cafeteria, Were all products of this industrious group. The all school dance on March 20, one of the most well remembered of all student council activities, was organized by the club's sponSQf, Mr. Mount, the officers, and planning commlt- tees. '-...NNE Eighth Grade Class After the customary week of orientation, the eighth-graders of Westlane began a strenuous program of study which will be the basis for all their later learning. Among other things, the eighth-graders struggled through the basics of chemistry, delved into the mystery of axz + bx Ji- c I 0, and fought in the trenches of numerous Wars. During this year they also had their first taste of responsibility-they were permitted to choose their freshmen elective courses. This not only gave them the heady sense of freedom, but also forced them to realize the importance of a well- rounded education. The eighth-graders were the middle children of Westlane and, just like the middle childl' at home, were an important part of the 1963-1964 school year. No longer were their lunches selected for them, the students were now responsible for their own nutritional needs. How- ever, their coach, Mr. Hudson, believed the team could have Won more meets if all the boys who had started the season had continued through- out the year. A team,s placement among other competition was determined by the sum of the top five boys' scores. The lowest of these added scores decided the Winning team. The boys practiced long and hard and came in third in the Washington In- vitational. They also placed third and seventh in two other invitationals. Fogle, Mr. Hudson, coach, T. Sutton, V. Bareither. Baker, Student Manager, A. Fasola, F. Bodwell, J. Jefferies, T. Scott, T. Sutton, M. Aycock. Row 2: Mr. Clayton, coach, B. Shook, J. Hickey, FRESHMAN BASEBALL Many freshman boys eagerly turned out this spring to try out for the baseball team which was coached by Mr. Clayton. The first of his many jobs was to choose the boys who would become the most successful, well-rounded players. Having satisfactorily completed this duty, Mr. Clayton and his newly formed team enthusias- tically started practicing and perfecting their baseball skills. Throughout the season the boys competed against numerous rivals such as East- wood, Carmel, and Noblesville. 7TH AND 8TH GRADE BASEBALL-Row 1: S. Smith, H. DeFord, S. Love, G. Linder, R. Lash, S. With Mr. Teboe as coach, the boys marched on towards victory. There were many things considered before this year's seventh and eighth grade players were chosen. The boys had to be capable of throwing, hitting, and running. XV e feel that Westlane has good cause to be proud of her Seventh and Eighth Grade Base- ball Team. A Fisk, K. Undercoffer. CCACHES-Mr Weesner, Mr Hudson, Mr Goff, Mr. Teboe, Mr. Clayton, MY- Webb, MF- H0b50n' As you all know by now, the theme of the V47esfwi1zrl this year was Captured Memories on Micro-film. Therefore, the yearbook staff included some of the more outstanding events of the 1963-64 school year. Obvious occurences, such as dances and parties, were included, of course, but the emphasis was shifted from the lighter side of school life to other things, such as the presentation of awards, installation of student council members and officers, various club activities, and sports events. This was done in an attempt to select occasions that were an integral part of our school year. Although we may hate to admit it, learning was the main reason we were here. Fortunately, the shock of receiving knowledge was softened by our surroundings. The freshmen in particular appreciated the new language lab, an excellent place to do unfinished homework, the seventh graders enjoyed their first taste of biology- 5, ci the eighth-graders impressed us all i D creations in art. with their Although the annual language and maths matics competitions with students from other schools were omitted this year, Westlane Stu dents distinguished themselves with - the Science Fair and for their various clubs This year has been a fruitful one for Westlane and her students, and one we are not forget. Next year a new circle will start. The freshmen, top dogsv this year, will again be low men on the totem pole at North Central and the eighth and seventh graders will move up to a position of higher rank.
