4 FRESHMAN TENNIS TEAM. Firsi row: T. Phillips, T. Gronau, B. Lee, L. Tavelg Second row: R. Clark, M. Gorrell, J. Jay, Mr. Larry Benbow, S. Enkcma, M. Berger. Tennis The freshman tennis team, coached by Mr. Larry Benbovv, anticipated a demanding but rewarding 1963 season. The superior record of the 1962 team served as an inspiration, as the team and coach worked long hours. Under the watchful eyes of Mr. Benbow, who also participated in all warm-ups during practice, these boys spent much time after school and on weekends, preparing themselves for their full schedule of ten games. While the two leading players were Steve Enkerna and Bill Lee, each of the boys on the team repre- sented Westlane admirably. ix 1053345355 'Q Q 5 Ewa'-:Hel-A , Q. Q. U. .Q let. Golf The 1963 freshman golf team, coached by Mr. Webb, met the season with high hopes and much eagerness, their goal-to perpetuate the unequaled freshman golf record of only one defeat in six years. Mr. Webb also coached a spirited, determined, and capable group of eighth grade golfers. These boys, of course, performed well, but they too are eager to continue, as freshmen, Westlane's long series of golf victories. When preparing for a match, the team members play nine holes three days a Week, on their home course, Greentree. Since a golf match is rarely post- poned because of weather, a successful player must possess not only skill but also strength and endurance. Greentree, the longest course in the state, enables the golfers to develop and perfect all of these attributes.

ASEB LL Enthusiastic Westlane seventh and eighth graders turned out in great numbers, eager to make Mr. Hudson's 1963 baseball team. The abilities displayed by pitchers, infielders, and outfielders were outstanding and made the coach's job of selection and elimination most difficult. Mr. Clayton, freshman coach, also met many eager players, several of whom were members of last year's successful seventh and eighth grade team. Therefore, with some experience, plus the memory of last year's freshman record of nine victories and one defeat as a goal to better, the members worked industriously. Mr. Clayton was pleased, not only by the interest shown, but also by the varied talents and abilities displayed by his players. Some of the teams that the freshman team chal- lenged were Eastwood, Perry East, Ben Davis, Wood- view, and Fulton. The seventh and eighth grade team met the expert competition of Noblesville, Perry Central, Eastwood, and Lawrence Central. Both teams had practiced con- tinually and were ready for the challengers.
