Most Westlaners say the best part of school is seeing our friends. There are also many favorite spots that We have discovered. Who can forget the frantic get-togethers around lockers as we paused briefly between classes? We carried our enthusiasm to our after-school games Where we vented our excess energy stored up after a full day at school. Our busy life continued as getting to the buses proved to be a challenge when we maneuvered our way past friends invariably trying to go in the opposite direction. We even found time to get to know each other better as We Worked together in the classrooms. Whether in class or in the halls, during school or after, friends and faces played an important role in our lives at Westlane. Means Familiar Friends and Faces Don't let it loose! What makes these places special to us? The quietude of the library? The beckoning of friends in the cafeteria? The bustling in the halls? Or is it that all these are crowded places-crowded with smiling friends and happy faces? This year Westlane is more crowded than it has ever been, or may ever be. The traffic jams at the ends of the halls are almost unavoidable, and the noise during the passing time is contagious. Especially agonizing to those who dine in E lunch period are the aromas from the kitchen when the cafeteria is used as a study hall. The library is well put to use by the many who do research, compose book reports, or are just plain bookworms. Yet, we cheerfully bear these conditions, for we know that these crowds are made up of our friends. Page seven ef-r3'e'i511?'8GE:i's7l33'aTz'? '.'HWifii '9: '-- QJ ' '-1-:.2..--1-1-:-. Time spent in the classrooms plays the major role in our lives at Westlane. Among the many inter- esting classes is the music class, which every seventh grader takes. During this semester, they learn about composers and the instruments of the various musical groups along with their study of music appreciation and daily singing. Seventh grade students especially enjoy such things as drawing their impressions as they listen to famous artists. Eighth grade history classes study the events lead- ing from medieval history to present day society. Their study involves American history, including the Revolution to World War Il. They learn of our countryls governmental structure and vast heritage. Their activities include making maps, giving reports, and seeing films. Page ten Classroom tudies - This year the biology teachers have adopted a mod- ified BSCS course. The freshmen have studied the struc- ture of a living cell, the three kingdoms, plant, animal, and protist, and spent the remainder of the year studying genetics, heredity, and embryology. 'The Growth Curve of a Leaff' Dissection of a Live Frog,', and 'tThe Study of Genetics in Fruit Flies were some of the labs that proved to be challenging to the biology students. Ninth graders who are taking biology, along with the seventh grade general science students, are eligible to apply to Experiences Un- limitedv and other shorter studies involving field trips. These classes are representative of the many such Varied, interesting courses from which we gain more understanding of the world in which we live and ourselves. fr'-Y -.4 A'f'v'-'.-'--- -17 -'. ff,-. ,..,- ---1 ---greg '. ,.'.-31.--:fs ,,-.'.:..-, . .'--.- .-..,.--J,-r-.'..'. 1,-r - V, 1 .- , . , -HV... --.e r ,, ,,. . ., .. . , . . . . .... . .. These popular convocations reveal surprising abilities to convey ideas and feelings to an audience. The Christmas convocation also displayed our artistic talents. This time musical gifts were exhibited -both vocally and instrumentally. Westlaners' talents, however, are not limited to artistic areas. Intellectual endowments too receive attention. One way these talents are developed is through our advanced science program. With modern equipment and an opportunity for individual study, we are enabled, through the science fair, to reveal effectively these skills to objective viewers. Another intellectual area in which our talents expressed themselves was Latin. Competing against many other schools, primarily high schools, we brought home from the regional contest the three highest scores. Yes, we have talent, which is demonstrated, recog- nized, and appreciated through activities at Westlane. The Spurr Team, assisted by freshman Pete Kurlis, gave us a show of music and magic with a touch of seriousness. Another popular convocation was given by the Percussion Trio. Not only did We learn the fundamentals of jazz, but we found the music to be very enjoyable and entertaining. The talent of the young drummer, who played a solo, Was particularly fascinating. The freshman team placed eighth in the county meet out of thirteen teams, and our outstanding wrestler was Pete Reilly. Their record, however, proves that the entire team performed well on all occasions. ASEB LL Enthusiastic Westlane seventh and eighth graders turned out in great numbers, eager to make Mr. Hudson's 1963 baseball team. The abilities displayed by pitchers, infielders, and outfielders were outstanding and made the coach's job of selection and elimination most difficult. Mr. Clayton, freshman coach, also met many eager players, several of whom were members of last year's successful seventh and eighth grade team. Therefore, with some experience, plus the memory of last year's freshman record of nine victories and one defeat as a goal to better, the members worked industriously. Mr. Clayton was pleased, not only by the interest shown, but also by the varied talents and abilities displayed by his players. Some of the teams that the freshman team chal- lenged were Eastwood, Perry East, Ben Davis, Wood- view, and Fulton. The seventh and eighth grade team met the expert competition of Noblesville, Perry Central, Eastwood, and Lawrence Central. Both teams had practiced con- tinually and were ready for the challengers. The superior record of the 1962 team served as an inspiration, as the team and coach worked long hours. Under the watchful eyes of Mr. Benbow, who also participated in all warm-ups during practice, these boys spent much time after school and on weekends, preparing themselves for their full schedule of ten games. While the two leading players were Steve Enkerna and Bill Lee, each of the boys on the team repre- sented Westlane admirably. ix 1053345355 'Q Q 5 Ewa'-:Hel-A , Q. Q. U. .Q let. Golf The 1963 freshman golf team, coached by Mr. Webb, met the season with high hopes and much eagerness, their goal-to perpetuate the unequaled freshman golf record of only one defeat in six years. Mr. Webb also coached a spirited, determined, and capable group of eighth grade golfers. These boys, of course, performed well, but they too are eager to continue, as freshmen, Westlane's long series of golf victories. When preparing for a match, the team members play nine holes three days a Week, on their home course, Greentree. Since a golf match is rarely post- poned because of weather, a successful player must possess not only skill but also strength and endurance. Greentree, the longest course in the state, enables the golfers to develop and perfect all of these attributes. Mr. Russell Abel, Principal In his fourth year as principal of Westlane Mr. Russell Abel has been successful solving the problems of our temporarily over-crowded school. Mr. Abel's many exacting tasks include organizing the curriculum, reviewing textbooks, planning teachers, meetings, and working with the Triangle Club. These administrative responsibilities he performs with a great deal of ef- fectiveness, striving always to improve Westlane wherever possible. However, he has one regret. While his interest is always directed toward the students, his busy schedule prevents him from establishing the close, friendly relationship with the student body he would like to have. Nevertheless, we know that his sincere smile and dignified appearance will always be associated with our memories of Westlane. Administrators Work Success all to Make Westlane Run rnoothl Mr. Arnold Spilly, Vice-Principal Mr. Arnold Spilly is occupying the position of Vice- Principal of Westlane for his fourth consecutive year. Both students and teachers come in contact with Mr. Spilly every day. If we donit come to him for ad- mission passes in the mornings or meet with him in the cafeteria, we can always find Mr. Spilly smiling in the halls. Besides being responsible for attendance, discipline, and part of our curriculum, Mr. Spilly schedules classes for both teachers and students and directs our club programs. Mr. Spillyis fine super- vision and hard work certainly deserve our gratitude. Page fifty-eight offer.. as e -..,M,..-...QM ,. Not only did we broaden our field of knowledge, but we also gained valuable experiences that we will probably never forget. In making the WC'.YfIb'i'l7lZ we have tried to touch upon the highlights of this year. We would like to express our thanks to Ropkey Engraving Company, Inc., and Benton Review Publish- ing Company for their fine assistance. We would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the Photography Club, the faculty, the administrators, and all of you, who helped to make this yearbook possible. We hope that this WCSflUi7Zll will serve as a permanent record of memories we hold so dear- our victories and our defeats, our work and our fun, our friends, our dreams, and ourselves.
