November 20. the seniors were honored at the graduates' dinner. At eight o'clock the music started and the seniors marched down the stairs through an arch of gold and white floral rings held by the juniors. This entrance marked the opening of Senior Ring Ceremony. one of Westlakes most memorable traditions. The girls in their soft pastel gowns made a beautiful picture. Miss Mills greeted the parents. friends. and faculty. and read the tradtional passage from the Bible. Miss Mills and Miss Temple gave in- spirational talks. The guest speaker was Mrs. Lawrence L. Bird ijoan Davey l. class of '-17. who welcomed the seniors into the Alumnae Associa- tion. Tassie Wheelon. senior class president. ex- pressed the appreciation of the seniors for the guidance and encouragement given by the teach- ers and parents. The program was climaxed by the presentation of the ring to each senior. The seniors arose and recited the Ring Pledge of loyalty. Hap- pily and proudly the seniors sang the senior ring song written by Sonya Gancz and Lynne Meyer. This was followed by the singing of the Alma Mater. A reception followed at which friends were greeted and pictures of the seniors and their juniors were taken. The evening was completed with the seniors entertaining their juniors at Blunrs. These rings shall remind us always to encircle our thoughts and our actions with a band of gold: the gold of beauty. of truth. and of service to others. This evening. upon receiving these rings engraved with the seal of Westlake. the linal realization that we are seniors has come to us and. I believe. to our par- ents and teachers. For we have not achieved this goal on our own: it has been accomplished through the help of you, our parents. always there to give an en- couraging word and hearing our moans and groans of studiesg and to you. our teachers. who have helped us to understand that education is not just the process of completing assignments and passing tests. but the whole act of broadening our minds and a constant quest for knowledge. With these rings. we shall forever remember and cherish one of the most important experiences in our lives. the experience of Westlake. For some of us. there have been twelve yearsg for others this is the first. But for all. I know that there will be an everlasting devo- tion to our school. For it is here that we have matured our minds. enabling us to become aware of ourselves and of the world about us: and it is here also that we have formed the multitude of our friendships. We thank you. our parents: and to you. Miss Mills. Miss Temple. and all our teachers. we extend our deepest gratitude. . We have tried to pre- pare ourselves for the future, not just for the eighth grade, learning to be prompt and careful in our work and building the qualities that will make us better citizens: self- control, cooperation, and honesty. This year we elected our first two seventh grade officers to the newly-formed Junior Council. Our school activities included assembly programs, class meetings, our first life-saving course, swimming practice for the aquacade and dances for the May Fete. Projects for art, science, social studies, and music appreciation classes and frequent letters to and from our Belgian orphan, Mia, broadened the range of our knowledge, trips to the Huntington Library, the County Museum, and the opera Madame But- terfly carried our interests from the classroom out into the world. n I - ' - W U as ff? Our principal aim as sixth graders has been to promote Westlake's ideals for develop- mg good American citizens ideals of honesty dependability, courtesy, cleanliness of body and thought cooperation and leadership. Our projects for the year that have been fun and full of satisfaction have included the soft warm blanket we knit for a needy eighty-two year old Havasupai woman, and gifts of warm clothing and toys for the Havasupai Indian children for Christmas, and our Christmas tree for wild birds boughs heavy with goodies that the birds enjoy. Through our study of conservation of our natural resources, we have learned to better understand and protect and appreciate Nature's wonderful gifts to us. To this end, we plant and care for a sixth grade garden. Plant, don't pick the wild flowers is our motto. FIFTH GRADE 5 uv .iff 'WL f . 1 GU ' 1 e e l 1 Second row: K. Hayward, B. Wright, L. Our aim has been to make our classroom activities contribute to a well balanced in- dividual, an individual who practices self-control, thoughtfulness of others, and perseverance. We were very enthusiastic about presenting our six assembly programs, especially the Thanksgiving play. This year we made maps of the United States, North and South America. We also enjoyed making booklets of the poems we memorized. In arithmetic we learned how to do thought problems, long division by three numbers, and fractions. In geography and history we covered the Western Hemisphere. Reading has been a special joy. All year we have worked hard to achieve a high standard of spelling, vocabulary build- ing. and penmanship. ln the fifth grade we have been a happy group working and playing together. The object of teaching a child is to enable him to get along without his teacher. ELBERT HUBBARD 'sr -.J FOURTH GRADE f I E . 4 I :ll 74? . ,V 75 'vi B' . In fourth grade we learn that all our subjects are related. We discover from experience that we need arithmetic in science, history, and geography. We must know how to read maps to find the places about which we read in stories, newspapers, and in his- tory. Learning to read well helps us to understand thought problems in arithmetic. We begin to see a purpose in going to school. In social studies we learn how people make a living in various kinds of places in our own country and in similar places in other parts of the world. ln history we study about the people from many countries who helped to discover and settle the United States of America. We read many books for fun, for information. and to develop our skill in reading. We learn how to choose books. discussing our reasons for choosing them. We'll remember our assembly programs. especially Animals in the News. and George Washington as a Boy. THIRD GRADE ' '59 ...' Hngruy f--qi Z' 'E 4 x Q if K 'X it k ,A 1 ik ef, ik N ,J M Second row: A. Along with these skills we have learned about phonics to help us in our reading and spelling. And in one year our work in numbers has been completed. This has not been all work and no fun. There was keen competition in the Gold-White 84 games this year and the season was one of great excitement. The teams were closely matched but the Whites proved themselves to be the better team and emerged victorious for the season. lnterclass competition is always filled with great eagerness and spirit. Both teams Nl Vkrtther Cf Crawford turned out for enthusiastic cheering and it was fun for everyone. The Golds surged ahead in the last few minutes to win the meet. This year for the first time the seniors were invited to take part in the festivities. In a dining room gaily decorated with pine. holly and Christmas candles we en- joyed a wonderful holiday dinner and sang traditional Christmas carols. After dinner the drama class. under the direction of Miss Gertrude Millard. pre- sented Stephen Benet's A Child Is Born. Imaginative portrayals and excellent stag- ing gave us a beautiful reminder of the meaning of Christmas. We then assembled in the drawing room. When all was quiet we heard the jingling of sleigh bells from the roof and Santa slid down the chimney into the room. He seated himself in an overstuffed chair in front of the hreplace and told a charming story of Christmas to a wide-eyed audience. He then amused us by telling the deepest secrets of our lives. reading from his little black book. This happy evening was concluded by the ex- change of gifts, stacked high under the beautifully decorated Christmas tree. MAY FETE Drama Personified N1ilI'li Hmxxning: M115 Ouccn 'l'l1irfl mum' Vulc.
