THE DANCE THAT ALMOST WASN’T Suppose we had a dance and nobody came. Such was almost the case at the annual Christmas Dance held on December 12, 1987 The dance hours were from eight o’clock p.m to twelve o’clock a m. At eight o’clock a few early birds came in for pictures only five chaperones, three people from the photography studio, and one lonesome deejay. Sepulchral quietness prevailed at nine o 'clock, for no dancers had arrived, thus, no need for music four chaperones, five people for the studio, and one lonesome deejay. At nine-thirty three couples ventured onto the dance floor and the sounds of dance music vibrated through the halls. An occasional couple trickled in — some for pictures, others came to dance! At the most populous time of the evening, eight couples were on the dance floor. The final attendance at the gala was thirty-six. Of that number, ten came for pictures only. Students were polled the week after the dance with the following question: “for what reason did you not attend the Christmas Dance?’’ The results are as follows: Reason % I just didn’t want to 23 Too many chaperones 12 Dances are boring 10 Didn’t want to come stag 7 Conflict in schedule 6 Expense 5 Kind of Music 0 Other 17 Did not respond 20 What is the future of dances at WHS when people do not want to come? What can be done to make the dances more enjoyable and have the student body participate? Or, is the root of the problem apathy? Sabra Bray, Darla Duhon, and Amy Picard ponder the question Where’s the party?” Kelly Stoddard and Kent Bullet are all dressed up and ready to go, but where? The Christmas dance “crowd”. 18 Around School

PROM ’88: THE WAY This year’s prom theme was “The Way We Were, ” but things weren't actually the way they always were since WHS participated in Operation Prom Night. Sponsored by the Junior Class, the prom was held April 16, 1988, in the school cafeteria. Music u as provided by the KBIU Sound Factory. Prior to the coronation, seniors were recognized by their participating in the Senior Walk. An additional highlight was the traditional garter ceremony. Wen-dee Duhon and Kevin Banks were crowned as Mr. and Miss Westlake High School by a vote of the entire student body. Another special feature of prom night was the valet parking service provided by parents and faculty. Following the prom, the Cage Club sponsored a breakfast at the Chateau Charles for all juniors, seniors, and chaperones. Cash door prizes were awarded to 5 lucky students. WE WERE The students shown demonstrate the different phases of producing a successful prom night. 20 Academics
