SBr , , HM VU0U1 Westlake High School 1000 Garden Drive Westlake, Louisiana Volume 40 Unity Is Our Key To Success WHS is more than just a place where people meet to attend classes. Our school extends beyond the walls of a building. It goes out into the community of Westlake. A variety of people, each with their own particular talents and roles make up WHS. These people are what make us number one. The principals, secretaries, counselor, teachers, students, football players, basketball players, tennis players, baseball players, track members, cheerleaders, band members, club members, newspaper staff, and yearbook staff each have their own contribution to WHS's unity and success. Guidance and support to the students are the contributions that the principals, secretaries, counselor, and teachers make to WHS. The students contribute their efforts to do their best in their classes. The football players, basketball players, tennis players, baseball players, track members, cheerleaders, and band members show their dedication to WHS by practicing long, hard hours to be the best representatives of WHS they can possibly be. The members of the organizations at WHS try to add variety to our school by keeping their clubs active. The newspaper staff keeps the student body aware of what is going on at WHS. The yearbook staff records the school year to provide the students with memories of their high school days. All these people and their efforts at unity are what make WHS number one. For the past eleven years he has been at Westlake High School, and is currently head football coach of the Westlake Rams. Coach Caldarera is married to Wanda Lejeune and they have two children, Kimberly and Little Max. He and his family attend St. John Bosco Catholic Church, and reside in Westlake. He enjoys all outdoor sports, especially hunting and fishing! To many, Coach Max is known as the best crawfish cook in Southwest Louisiana. Student Life 15 Boy’s And Girl’s State I had a great time at Boy's State even though it was one of the most strenuous activities that I've ever participated in. I really had to put out a lot of effort, but it was worth it. When it was over, I felt a great sense of accomplishment and pride in myself. It was also a chance to make new friends and learn a lot about government. Eric Strahan Boy's State was a great experience. I learned about the different levels of government and how the government works at the different levels. I learned about the duties of the state and local officials. Chuck Cochran Eric Srrahan, Jenny Landry, and Chuck Cochran Girl’s State was a great educational experience. I learned a great deal about how the government works and also the jobs different local and state officials perform. Jenny Landry Girl's State was a great experience. I would recommend it to anybody who is interested in learning about government or in seeing how much sleep they can go without. I really enjoyed meeting girls from all over Louisiana and working with them in my city and parish. During the week of Girl's State, our motto was Go for it , and that's what we did. Is what Coach Max could have said to many of his driver's Ed. students this year. Driver's Ed plays an important part in many of the Freshmen and Sophomores lives at WHS. For the past three years most our coaches at WHS have taken their time and effort to teach the students better driving abilities through this course. Although the cost of Driver's Education has risen these past few years, many students still feel as though this course would help them to be better drivers. Insurance cost for the students decreases if Driver's Ed. is taken, and a half a credit is gained for graduation. Each student that took this course met every morning at 7:15 for six weeks during the school year. At this time, the written part was given. When the summer finally arrived, the biggest test was upon them, driving. Each student was given a score on how well they did. I feel all high school students should take Driver's Ed. to make them safer drivers. Also the fact that it saves their parents money on the insurance , says Coach Max. We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to Coach Max and all the coaches who took their time to make the students at WHS better drivers. This year the sophomores were required to take the Louisiana State Assessment Test. The test was basically composed of minimum standards on reading, mathematics, and English skills. Since the test is on national standards, it should not be difficult for the students to pass , says Mrs. Jones. The students weren't given a study booklet. Everyday ciasswork prepared each person for the test. The test was given to see how much the students comphrehended during the school year. A high test score always looks good on a student's grade card. Hopefully, each student put out his best effort to accomplish only the best test scores. CPR. Is taught in all of the physical education classes in Westlake High School. This idea is very important and useful to our students. CPR can save lives, so our faculty decided if our students knew CPR maybe someone could be saved from death. The students overall enjoyed CPR. It was a break from routine, exercising and then some type of sport. Some Students did not study this process just to break routine. They were real interested and now have ideas about their fu tures. For some it's only just begun. For others, it's probably the last time they will see all of their classmates at the same time until a class reunion. For all, though, we made our own memories for ourselves. Good memories don't necessarily mean that all final scores were in our favor, that we made perfect report cards, or that we won every competition we entered. What really makes good memories is that every student, faculty member, and staff member made an effort to improve WHS in one way or another; and that we all stuck together in good and bad times. jOSTtNS 200 Oosing
