The value and status of a school is determined by the students who attend and the following pages will show why our school is the greatest. Spirit is the life of a school. We have many activities which students can participate in such as basketball, football. Ra-mettes. Annual Staff, Band and other clubs. By taking part in these, the students show their pride, dedication, and spirit for their school. Preparing for the next year begins during the summer for many Westlake High students. Many students attended summer camps, summer practices, and workshops at McNeese. During the summer the students received their yearbooks. Looking at the pages brought many happy memories of the year before. Students at Westlake High are a sriident body that stands together and supports each and every group that goes out to represent our school. They can be proud no matter if they win or lose because they do so as an entire unit and not just individual groups. Westlake High, We’re Proud of You.” Westlake High students enjoy a pep rally. Opening 3 Principals Provide Leadership . . . The 1984 RAM-LER is a priceless item because it preserves the look and feel of a very special time in the lives of all our students. Thanks to your competent efforts, students of our school can renew and relive those memories again in the years to come. You are obviously a group with a strong sense of organization, and I am sure that each of you must have viewed the ideas of others with respect and a willingness to cooperate. I am particularly impressed that you were able to maintain such a highly respected position on campus while spending countless hours on the yearbook. On behalf of all the students, faculty and administration. I thank you for this fine publication. Billy R. Callens, Principal 4 Student Life . . . Co-Workers Assist Gary Anderson. Assistant Principal Barbara McGuire, office clerk Mary Jones, counselor Dorothy Watson, office clerk Student Life 5 A Very Special Friend By unanimous decision, the Ram-ler Staff is proud to announce the dedication of the 1984 edition to one who has given six years of her personal touch to Westlake High School. A special sense of pride grows throughout the school and much of this we owe to the many hours of special communication and guidance from our counselor. There is never a hesitation to help or just to sit and listen. We appreciate the help and special care she gives the students. With this we announce our dedication to Mrs. Mary Jane Jones. Mrs. Jones is a native of Opelou-sesus. La. and graduated from Holy Ghost High School. She received her B.A. degree in 1963 from Southern University and furthered her education at McNeese State University. There she received her Masters + 30. Jim and Johnny think Boy's State was a great experience. Boy s and Girl's State is a once in a lifetime experience each year for four juniors. This year selected juniors were Susan Watson, Joanna Kile, Johnny Johnson, and Jim Farley. The program is held in Baton Rouge. Louisiana on the campus of L.S.U. Girl's State was held August 3-10 and Boy’s State was August 4-11. These eight days were very strenuous days filled with hard work and determination. Much was learned from this experience for all the juniors that attended. The Westlake American Legion sponsors Boy’s and Girl's State for the Westlake students and a banquet was held January 14 to present the participants. When the students arrive at the campus there is much confusion and excitement as they find themselves around so many strange faces. Each Westlake student was placed in a room with a total stranger from another school. Many new friends were made throughout the eight days of the program. When the week came to an end there was a sadness among the newly made friends. The students from Westlake were united only once, the night of the Boy's and Girl’s State Dance which was August 9. A few steps gained on the ladder to success. I4 Student Life f The participants that attended Boy's and Girl’s State were Susan Watson, It was an exciting experience for me. At first you get scared because you don’t know anyone, but things start happening so that you make new friends. I had little sleep and missed home, but I enjoyed myself alot. Joanne Kile. Girl's State was anything but boring. Adjustment comes quickly though, you learn to eat quickly and live without any sleep. Jim Farley, Boy’s State was an enlightening experience, teaching patience, trust, and the ability to work with others. The entire week was filled with work, but this was enjoyable work. The dance with Girl s State was the most pleasurable memory of the week. Johnny Johnson, Boy’s State was one of the best experiences of my life. Besides learning how the government works, I learned to work with people.” New heights were reached at Boy's and Girl's State. Nearly everyone is trying to get into shape and stay in shape and aerobicise is the answer. From health food to exercising to the beat of the music, many people are getting with it.” Olivia Newton-John was among the first to generate interest with her hit song Let's Get Physical.” After that, many people fell into step as they wanted to be slender and look like Christi Brinkley. Now when one walks into a store, he looks for something new to wear to exercise class instead of something new to wear to school. Aerobicise is not only exercising, but also its own little corner of fashion. John Nordberg weight lift during football practice. Stacy Byrd shows deep concentration while working out. Weight-lifting is another way of exercising. There are a number of places that weight-lifting can be done. One is the school weight room, another is the privacy of one's own home, and just recently the Genesis Spa has opened. Many students are spending countless hours shaping and toning their bodies. Team roping is the event I went to finals in last year. I didn't make it in bull riding because of an injury. Saddle broncing is a challenging event where you ride some wild and crazy horse, and their not as easy to ride as a bull. Bull riding is the most challenging event in rodeo, because you never know what a bull might do. He may jump out there and spin like a top, or he may buck straight down the pen. I have a few people to give thanks to for me being in rodeoes. First I want to thank God for healing me and helping me to ride again. The second are my uncles Mark Thornton and Ray Sonnier. Mark being state champion bull rider for two years in a row can help me ride as best possible. Ray helps me with my roping. Without these two men. my horse and I couldn't do anything. I also must thank my mother and father for staying with me through injuries and winning rides. 72 Sports by Russell Maddox Future Business Leaders Of America Sheryl Sudduth- President Brigette Brown- Vice President Westlake High School’s Mock-Wedding Joyce and Donald get the taste of marriage life first hand.
