Classes — 21 Faculty — 69 Organizations Activities — 121 Royalties — 135 Sports — 157 Ads — 199 School was out and WHS students settled down “For the Good Times” of summer. Some of us worked, some of us played, and some of us did both, but some of us even went to school. We all hoped that the 1977-78 school year would turn out as planned for it to be. As for all the fun and games, everyone was ready. No one just sat around and let the fun pass them by. They even put themselves to work helping get things ready For the Good Times” of the following year. School began earlier than August 23 for a large number of Westlake High Students. The Cheerleaders busily started making signs “greeting the new students.” Football season began early for the cheerleaders for they had to also make signs chee.ing the boys toward victory. The Ramettes and the band carefully created shows and practiced them over and over until everything was just about perfect and ready to be performed on the field. Some of us who started early were just trying to get in some early work in order to get ahead For the Good Times’’ of the fall. Early planning was needed in order to not have to cram everything in all at one time. Once the school year starts there is no stopping or slowing down in your work, you must stay one step ahead of yourself. August 23 rolled around and school started. Most of us were ready to come back and get in the swing of things. The Freshmen were nervous but excited, often a little lost. The Seniors were a little uneasy because they couldn’t believe they had arrived at the top of the ladder at last. But once they got the hang of it, it was better than ever. They finally realized they were the “tops.” The counselors and office staff were busy answering questions which had filled the students’ heads. Schedules were being fixed so that everyone would be able to enjoy and be ready “For the Good Times” ahead of them. It didn’t take us long to get back into the school routine. The new students fit right in with the others. They were made to feel at ease. Schedules were worked out, textbooks were assigned, and everyone was issued a locker. It wasn’t long afterwards, until everyone was losing their locker keys. A dollar was paid here and there for new keys and a promise was made not to lose them again. Don’t get the idea that it was all work and no play. We were also ready “For the Good Times” of 1977-78. Football season started once more and we had even higher hopes than last year. Pep rallies inspired not only the football players, but the students and faculty also. Dances were held after some of the games and “pizza” was the main food eaten after each football game was played. Football led to the big one, “Homecoming.” School became the center of all our activities and attractions. We worked in the classrooms and played hard out of them. All this time, we were changing, growing, maturing, seeking, and wondering how everything would turn out. But, everything turned out just great. If everything wasn’t in tip-top shape, it was at the best, far better than expected. The 1977-78 school year at Westlake High School was hopefully a truly remembered and satisfying one. Dear Students, Through the years this book will be looked at many times by many different people. It is nice to know that you have at your finger tips the fond memories of your life at Westlake High School. Some of these memories may be a little sad but the majority will be happy memories. As the time goes on you will cherish your days and years that yon pent in high school. To the seniors, let me add a personal word. Your gr4 iation leaves me with mixed feelings — pride in your accomplishments and yet sorrow over your leaving. Through your years at Westlake High School, I have come to know and love you. You will not be forgotten. May I congratulate the Ram-ler staff and sponsor for the hard work that it has taken to make this yearbook successful. Sincerely, y y!CUuxwJ Oj Marion A. Two of our boys made it all the way to the Louisiana State Finals. Jimbo Barrentine, competitor in the 120 yard high hurdles, placed 5th overall. Also winning at the finals was Fred Williams. Fred placed 6th overall in the discus. We are all very proud of the accomplishments made by the Westlake High Track Team and their coaches. I feel in the season of '77-78 the Rams have the potential to take district, regionals, and state. The returning members who will achieve this goal are Jimbo Barrentine, Scott Ortego, Otis Jones, James Stevens, Nathan Reynolds, Richard Wagner, Greg Horton, Mike Deaton, and Gary Fontenot. The students, faculty, coaches, and fans are with you all they. Coach LaSalle Williams Track Coach Etta Dunn Track is a growing sport for girls. Track offers girls an opportunity to excel both in team events and in individual events. Girls win trophies, medals, and ribbons individually and win points for Westlake High School. Track is not only good in developing true athletes but it develops leadership and competitive spirit that does not diminish later in life. Coaching track doesn't stop at the close of a workout. Coaches have to deal with the girl not only as an athlete but as an individual. Girls compete in events that are of interest to them. They set their own goals and work hard to accomplish it. They may not always win, but the competition strengthens them, thus creating a stronger more competitive girl for the next track meet or the next year. I was especially pleased with all the girls, but there are a few who won in the various meets. Cindy Dixon, Charlene Adams, Julie Vincent, and Rhonda Courtney all lettered in track. Special recognition should be given to Rhonda Courtney for placing third place in state — the high jump. Some girls never won in the track meets, but really are to be considered winners in that they accomplished their own personal goals for this year. (From: Westlake Moss Bluff News) BARRENTINE LEADS RAMS TO VICTORY BY: PETE GAMMACE Jimbo Barrentine put on a show Friday night of how to catch passes and run pass patterns as he led the Rams to a 25-7 victory over the Washington Indians. )imbo caught two TD passes and set up another with a spectacular catch on the one yard line. He returned a punt 52 yards to score. The second quarter got the Rams on the scoreboard after a bad snap from center. Bob Bertrand tackled the punter on the seven as he tried to run the ball out. Barrentine scored the first TD on a good throw from Turnage. The PAT was blocked with 7:48 in the second quarter. The third quarter started with fumbles by both teams and james Stephens and the defense doing a great job containing the Indians running attack. Brian Racca intercepted a Washington pass to start the Rams on their last TD drive. Barrentine made a great catch between two defenders on the two yard line to set the stage for David Craig to score on the next play. The conversion attempt failed, leaving the score 25-7.
