Text from Pages 1 - 240 of the 1976 volume:

We Celebrate the Past the spirit of seventy There was an enormous force which strengthened the colonies, which exists today, and which has carried America through its great history. That force is know n to us all to be the Spirit of 76.” It is a SPIRIT OF LIBERTY and the knowledge that one man’s freedom is more important than anything else on earth. It is the SPIRIT OF OPTIMISM of knowing that we can always make things better — of working only for the best, and expecting only the best. It i the SPIRIT OF FRONTIER — of not fearing to go where man has not reached. George Washington Alexander Hamilton Janies Madison John Haneoek It is the SPIRIT OF IISDIVIDl ALISM — acknowledging a birthright of opportunity and freedom drawn from the strength of our fathers. Indeed the SPIRIT OF ’76” was, and is, many things, eaeh of whieh has been a building block of our national greatness. Our country grew on that spirit and prospered on that spirit. When all else fails it is that spirit that will he there to guide us and keep us strong. Ram-Ler 1976 ► Volume XXXI r Westlake High School Westlake, Louisiana 1 Editor - Jamie Query Asst. After attending Louisiana Tech for a semester he continued his education at USL where he graduated in 1970. He received his Master's from McNeese in 1973 and his Master's +30 in 1975. His first year of teaching was at Academy in Villeplatte where he taught for one year. He then came to help better the students of West-lake High School where he is in his fifth year of teaching here. He was married in 1967 to JoAnn Fontenot. He is the father of four children, three boys and one girl. They are Scott, Lance, Casey, and Carmen. He has continually and without hesitation given his time and talent in preparing photographers for the yearbook staff. For these reasons we of the 1976 Ram-Ler staff are privileged to dedicate this annual to you . . . Mr. Steve O'Pry. 22 23 50 bright stars saluting a navy blue sky represent the long struggle for union. Red stripes represent courage in the face of death, and the white stripes represent purity from corruption. 1 pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible , with liberty and justice for all. 27 Education has come far from the ”3 r's. It is typically American in its emphasis on the development of the students instead of on the subject matter. 28 30 33 35 Let me congratulate the students and faculty who worked so diligently to put together this 1975-'76 Ram-ler. ” Traditionally, the passing out of annuals is one of the highlights of your school year. Not only is this day important to you now, but through the years this annual will become more valuable as you reminisce about your high school days. These pages reflect a way of life that you experienced in 1975-'76. Enjoy the book and may your memories of Westlake High School be among the fondest remembrances that you ever experienced. Each class participated in a contest by decorating a section of the school. Everyone was busy making preparations for the parade that was scheduled for Thursday afternoon. There were almost a hundred entries. The parade route ended at Caraway’s Pharmacy where a mass pep rally was held. After the pep rally Ram fans gathered at the school for a bonfire. Open nominations and an election were held for selection of a court of ten girls. They were presented during an assembly held Friday afternoon. Dr. 172 Herring led the choir in a series of songs for entertainment. For pre-game activities the girls were driven around the track in corvettes. At halftime they were escorted across the field through an honor guard. The Queen, Cheryl Ann Walker, was crowned by Mrs. Grace Ousley Ryan, a member of the graduating class of 1925.
