Kneeling from left to right are: Randy Smith, Fcrrel Perron, Robert Venable, Gary Morrison, Travis McManemin, Van Hathorn. Standing: Allan Dennis, David Kidd, Danny Tradewell, Clifford Johnson, Donnie Fittz, Mike Robinson, and Keith Hardesty. Members of the Rams state championship 440 and 880 yard relay teams are left to right: Randy Smith, David Kidd, Ferrell Perron and Keith Hardesty. David Kidd and Randy Smith snap through a smooth exchange to pace Westlake to victory in the 440 yard relay before a partisan crowd at Rams Stadium. The mile relay team of Randy Smith, Donnie Fittz, Ferrell Perron, and David Kidd created a major sensation in 1969 when they raced to victory in the state meet to earn West-lake the state championship. This glorious moment was short-lived, however, as an official's decision, one that will be disputed from now on, had them disqualified. Gritty little Robert Venable strides to finish the mile run before the home fans in spite of injured legs. One of the many vaults that eventually earned Donnie Fittz a track scholarship to McNeese State. From the expression on his face, Clifford appears to have gotten off one of his better tosses in the discus. 3 7lt ifejic J)anyuet 1969 Perhaps the most deserving award winners at the annual athletic banquet were the coaches whose many hours of time and toil paid off in an 11-1-1 record in football, the best in the history of the school, and a berth in the state semifinals. From left to right are: Coach Charles Vicknair, Coach Mickey Benham, Coach Charles Kuehn, and Coach Wilridge Doucet. Pics by Harry Lancon Allan Dennis was named winner of the school’s highest athletic award when he was presented with the school's third annual Jimmy Jinky Elliott Award during the banquet's festivities. The trophy is given each year to the school's best all-around athlete. To qualify for this most distinguished honor an athlete must compete in each of the school's three major sports. During his high school career, Allan was an all-state quarterback in football, and an All-District 4-AA selection in basketball as well as a letterman in track. 4 Football awards went to(L-R) Frank Martarona, Most Desire; Gerald Cryer, Best Back; Mark Powers, Best Lineman; and Allan Dennis, Most Valuable Player. Winning basketball awards were left to right: Mike Walsh, Best Offensive Player; Keith Hardesty, Best Defensive Player; Mike Robinson, Sportsmanship; and Allan Dennis, Outstanding Player. Donnie Fittz, co-winner of the Best Fieldman Award in track. Taking honors in track were left to right: Randy Smith, Best Trackman; David Kidd, Most Valuable; and Keith Hardesty, who tied with Donnie Fittz for Best Fieldman. 5 , Junior Senior JJrom 1969 Pics by GABBERT-CARLILE 6 MRS. PEARLE HEBERT MISS BARBARA McGUIRE 0 It is with great pleasure thatthe Ram-ler staff dedicates the 1970 yearbook to Mrs. RuthKennedy. . . our English teacher. Mrs. Kennedy was born Ruth Marie Waltrip in San Antonio, Tex. From there she moved to Lake Arthur, and later to Jennings, where she was graduated from Jennings High School. She completed her work towards the Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1951. On July 24, 1952, our Ruthie married Arch Burton Kennedy, Jr. Theyhave three children - Burt, Terry and Susie. Mrs. Kennedy began her teaching career at Iowa High School, teaching there for two years before coming to Westlake in 1957. Although a very demanding teacher and a confirmed disciplinarian in the classroom, those who know Mrs. Kennedy wellcan truthfully say that she is one of the warmest, most dedicated teachers in our school. When classes are over she becomes an avid sports fan, especially when the Rams are playing, and disclaims housekeeping as being a chore but one of her fondest hobbies. Thus, it is the feeling of each and every member of this year's Ram-ler staff that the highest tribute that we can bestow upon you, Mrs. Kennedy, is to dedicate this, the 1970 edition, to you. And, thus, we proudly do so. II ( ]afeteria L acfies MRS. VERA BARRENTINE MRS. VALLIE BARRILLEAUX MRS. MARY LOU HOBEN MRS. ETHEL TRADEWELL 12 cS cBoof Be ciders 7lttencf Summer (Conferences Janet Lowery and Don Brown were chosen following a series of tests to represent Westlake High at a two-month science seminar at LSU. During their stay on the Baton Rouge campus they attended classes in astronomy, mathematics and chemistry. April Miller prepared for her duties as editor of the Ram-ler by a six-day leadership conference at LSU. The conference offered studies in year book, journalism, leadership and speech. Elected by their classmates to represent Westlake High at Pelican State were Williann Gibson and John Roderique. The annual nine-day session held during the summer at LSU attempts to teach each participant the proceedings of the state's government. The girls met in the teachers' lounge and were interviewed by judges not associated with the school. The winner was picked from a group of 22 nominations. Pictured above are the three judges represented and the girls receiving the most votes in their respective classes. From left to right are: Mrs. Sally Hayes, Mrs. Virginia White, Mrs. Marylin Dunn, Wanda Carter (Jr.), Judy Koonce (Soph.) and Carolyn Mitterlehner (Sr.). Lowery of West-lake. The happiest months of Debbie's life probably began in April, 1969, when she was named the winner of the West-lake pageant. Her biggest thrill came two months later when she was named winner of the state pageant, and earned the right to compete in the national event. Although Debbie was not a winner in the nationwide contest held in September, she did have the grand experience of competing against and meeting girls from the other 49 states. Debbie was judged in such categories as poise, personality, beauty, charm, scholastic achievement and civic participation in each of the three pageants. 16 SENIORS President........................BOBBY LeTARD Vice President------HELEN SCHWARTZENBURG Secretary-Treasurer - -----WILLI ANN GIBSON Reporter - --------------------SADIE BERTRAND CHARLOTTE MclNNIS VICTOR BRUBAKER BURG MARTARONA GOLDEN M.
