There were flashing lights and booming music to set the atmosphere of gaiety. A wonderful time was had by all except the chaperones, who found the music a bit too loud. Many students will long remember the narrow escape when Coach Kuehn almost caught the elbow benders in the kitchen. Judges for the event were Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Toomer and Mrs. Pat Milford. Following the tea the girls changed into evening gowns and were presented to the student body at an assembly in the auditorium. Winners were announced and tears and cheers signaled the end of this phase of the yearly activity. From left to right the nominees are: Darnell Richmond, Kina Loftin (runner-up), Priscilla Compton, Kristy Henson, Janice Pousson, Billie Jo Picard, Pam Hodges, Sandra Red den, Dora Lee Quinn, Williann Gibson, Mary Carver, Judy Fuselier, Golden Tradewell, Sadie Bertrand, Betty Carver, Debbie Broussard, Fannie Dowden, Cynthia Landon ■’nd Janis Hicks. 10 BeiJiratinn This year it was the unanimous decision of the Ram-Ler staff to dedicate the 1969 edition to a faculty member who has been with us for only two years, but has gained the respect and admiration of the entire community in this short time - Coach Charles E. Kuehn. He graduated from high school in Tom Ball, Texas in 1949 and entered McNeese State College where he earned his B. S. degree in 1953. It was in Tampa, Florida in 1952 when one of the most colorful stories about him came into being. One of the Tampa players had the ball and was headed for the goal line when Charlie Kuehn tackled him from the bench at the side line. At McNeese, Coach Kuehn met and married Billie Crochet of Baton Rouge and Lake Charles in 1954. They now have eight children, two boys and six girls, and Mrs. Kuehn hopes that when you receive this book the number will still be eight. After coaching at La Grange for three years the coach moved to McNeese where he was head track coach and assisted with football. He earned his M.E. degree from McNeese in 1965. In the fall of 1967 Coach Kuehn joined us here at Westlake High School and distinguished himself with a winning team for the 1968 football season. We are all pleased, proud and delighted and are looking forward to even greater records in the future. It is with distinct pleasure that we of the Ram-Ler staff dedicate this 1969 edition to you - Coach Charles E. Kuehn. The senior receiving the highest number of votes was to be crowned as queen. The identity of the winner remained a secret until the moment of the crowning. David Hebert Janice Pousson Mike Henson Fannie Dowden At a full assembly on that October morning each of the nominees was escorted in by the athlete who had nominated her. Very few colleges present such a program and Westlake High is the only high school in the nation to undertake such a monumental task. From the very beginning of the day there was strong evidence of a tremendous amount of planning and work. Everything went like clockwork and Mr. Moon and the members of his organization are to be commended on their splendid cooperation which is a necessary element for any event so large to work smoothly. To begin with, a date had to be chosen for the symposium. Next the twenty-eight authorities who spoke had to be contacted and asked to attend. Then a ' schedule was set up and rooms chosen in which the speakers would present their topics. Invitations were sent out to high schools all over the area with a list of the speakers and their topics. Interested students chose those whom they would like to hear with a couple of alternates in case of a conflict in hours of presentation. These acceptances and choices were returned to the FSA and a schedule was made for each of them. Then on Saturday morning the students picked up their schedules from tables set up in the lobby. Friends of the school and of Mr. Moon were pressed into service to help with this task. The scene on this page was the main office as it attempted to fulfill the late registrations and sell tickets to the banquet luncheon. The crush of teenagers and their chaperones in the office and front lobby was unbelievable. At a general assembly at 8:30 last minute instructions were given to the visiting students and the first lectures got underway. Workers heaved a sigh of relief. A count revealed that there were over 450 students from 23 different schools attending. Speakers and the topics on which they spoke were as follows: Dr. Donald Bardwell of Nicholls State College - Combinatorial Design and the Ramsey Number. Dr. Benny D. Barridge - McNeese - Viruses Dr. Clark E. Bricker - University of Kansas - The World's Energy Needs. Dr. William Brinkley and Dr. Elton Stubblefield -University of Texas, M. D. Anderson - Biochemical and Morphological Aspects of the Mammalian Cell Replication Cycle. Dr. Henry F. Coffer - vice president in charge of engineering and research for CER Geonuclear Corporation - Commercial Application of Nuclear Explosives. Mr. Moon poses with two of the giants in the field of science. Dr. C. A. Vanderwerf of Hope College in Holland, Michigan and Dr. Clark E. Bricker of the University of Kansas. Dr. Bricker is one of the world's foremost analytical chemists and helped to set up the chemistry department in India last year. Dr. Ronald D.
