THE RAM-LER 75th ANNIVERSARY EDITION WESTLAKE HIGH WESTLAKE, LOUISIANA VOL. XXI 1891-1966: DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY I n August of 1891 one acre of land was donated to the Calcasieu Parish School Board for the purpose of erecting a building to serve as the public school in Westlake, Louisiana. It is believed that the land was donated by Mr. Allen Perkins, but we were unable to confirm this report. The one-room school pictured at the bottom of this page was completed in time to begin classes in September of 1891, and this marks the beginning of the seventy five years of public education in Westlake that this edition of the Ram-Ler is commemorating. We would be lax, indeed, if we did not point out that prior to 1891 education was not completely lacking in this area. About 1875 Mr. William B. Pilley migrated to Sugartown from Alabama and, after a short stay, came on to Westlake. He was a preacher and a teacher and did both while he resided in the area. The very first school which Mr. Pilley helped to found was located halfway between John Stine Road and Bagdad. It was called the Sand Gully School and was about a quarter of a mile southwest of what is now the Hightower store building. It was a private school, with the students having to pay a tuition as well as buying all of their texts and supplies. Primarily the three R's with some literature thrown in were taught. The second private school was also a one-room structure and was located in the near vicinity of the present Liggio home. This building served as both a school and a church with all denominations taking turns in using it for their services. A third private school was located at Myrtle Springs and a fourth was located in the Perkins community and was called the Perkins’ Chapel School, because it, too, was used as both a church and a school. THE FIRST PUBLIC SCHOOL IN WESTLAKE AS IT APPEARED ON OPENING DAY IN SEPTEMBER 1891 OF PUBLIC EDUCATION IN WESTLAKE, LOUISIANA And finally, the last of the private schools was built in sucli a location that if it were standing today the Calcasieu River bridge would serve as a second roof. Researched and written by Maurice A. Burns PERKINS' CHAPEL SCHOOL - A DUPLICATE OF THE OTHER PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN THE AREA E.S. JENKINS An early teacher in the Perkins' School AT RIGHT IS MR. WILLIAM B. PILLEY, (seated) THE FIRST TEACHER IN THE AREA, AND HIS BROTHER GEORGE WHO WAS NOT A TEACHER. THE STUDENT BODY OF THE SCHOOL YEAR 1901-1902 T he new Westlake School of 1891 was sufficiently large to take care of the educational needs of the community, for that first year, but by the time school began in the fall of 1892 a partition had been constructed to divide the building into two rooms. In 1902 a new room had been added to take care of the enrollment increase. It was necessary for the students to pitch in and help with the chores associated with the running of a school. The boys assumed the task of gathering wood and keeping the old heaters going and the girls swept the building and dusted the furniture. Some of the teachers who were associated with this early phase of public education in Westlake were Mrs. W.P. Mamie Weber, Miss Letha Richards, Miss Mattie Sherrard, Miss Kate Harrop, Miss Lela Gray, Miss Annie Burgess, Mr. Robert Howell, Miss Lela Dickson, John Murry, Lorena Kearce, Maurice Stewart, Miss Lily Thurman and Prof. Waldon. In those days the students and teachers brought their lunches to school in syrup buckets and the meal usually consisted of cold biscuits, a piece of fried, home-cured bacon (sliced thick), and perhaps a baked sweet potato. On rare occasions there was a piece of homemade cake or a cookie. I n the year of 1882 a large ferry boat was built by Captain Fred Whert who named it Hazel for his only daughter. He operated it to convey passengers and freight between Westlake and Lake Charles. The old private schools and the new public school terminated a child's education at the end of the seventh grade and those who wished to pursue further education rode the Hazel (at a cost of $5.00 a month) to the ferry landing at the foot of Pujo Street in Lake Charles. This landing is pictured at the top of the facing page. Then the students walked over to Lake Charles High to continue until graduation. LCHS, as it appeared then is shown at the bottom of the facing page. Before the Hazel was put into operation there was a small boat called the Dinky. The ferry boat was the only way to get across the river without getting wet until the Southern Pacific Railroad came through the town in 1886 and the Kansas City Southern in 1898. Although it had nothing to do with educational progress in Westlake a familiar sight to residents of the area was the boat called the Borealis Rex. It carried freight between Lake Charles and Leesburg and on Sunday afternoons there were excursions, usually down to Big Lake and back. THE WAGONETTE OF 1914 Left to right above are Mrs. J.F. Spearing, Lillie Jackson, Era Jackson and Alma Deshotel. The horses that pulled the vehicle were Prince, Maggie and Cricket. BOREALIS REX THE ENTIRE STUDENT BODY AND FACULTY WITH THE PRINCIPAL, MR. S. P. ARNETT ABOUT 1909 0 f all the names appearing in the list of principals mere is one which shines just a little brighter than the others. It is that of Mr. S. P. Arnett, who served from 1909 - 1922. He was instrumental in getting the wood-frame building replaced with a more modern brick structure. Also, he is credited with having founded the first high school in Westlake. The building pictured at the bottom of the facing page served the educational needs of the community until a new three story brick building was completed in 1914, the first of the permanent buildings still in use. It was constructed just south of the wooden building and is usually referred to as the yellow brick building, although it is actually made of red bricks which have since been painted. Upon completion of this fine new building the old wooden one was torn down and was used to build the Negro school called the Westlake Colored Elementary School on Harrison Street across from the Ram Stadium. The lumber must have been excellent, because the building is not only still standing, but is in use. Principal Arnett was most anxious to have the new building open as a high school rather than end with the seventh grade, because this would end the ferry rides across the river and the long walk to Lake Charles High, both of which were hardships, especially in cold rainy weather. It seems, however, that there was a regulation that there must be a minimum of 40 students enrolled in order for an institution of learning to be recognized as a high school. Consequently, Mr. Arnett spent many hours rounding up those who planned to continue in Lake Charles and those who had quit at the end of the seventh grade and got them to agree to attend the new school if enough students could be obtained. When every conceivable possibility had been exhausted the total numbered only 38. A study was made of the records of the seventh grade students and the two smartest ones were promoted to raise the number to 40. Thus we became a high school in 1914. T ransportation was needed to get the students to and from school, so a team of horses was hitched to a covered wagon, as shown at the top of the facing page, and it made the rounds transporting a full load from Bagdad through Myrtle Springs over to Emile Guillory's house and on over to Westlake High. One such wagonette, as it was called was operated by Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Spearing. SAMUEL PAUL ARNETT In 1922 Mr. Clarence Sutherland bought a Ford, Model T , bus and drove it for two years to Gillis. In 1924 he got the contract to drive for Westlake High and, so the old horse drawn wagonette was retired. Mr, Sutherland drove for four years, covering the same area as the wagonette and, at the same time, Mr. Tom Newell drove a similar bus from Lockport and Bayou D’Inde to Westlake High. In 1928 Mr. George Smith got the contract with a larger bus more on the order of today’s models and replaced Mr. Sutherland. MR. CLARENCE SUTHERLAND AND THE MODEL T BUS Mr. Lee Wing obtained a new bus and replaced Mr. Newell on the Lockport - Bayou D'Inde route. Mr. Smith and Mr. Wing continued to drive until 1942, when Mr. Smith retired and WHS got its first lady bus driver--Mrs. Mabel Carver. Mrs. Carver continued to drive until her retirement in 1959. During the war a third bus was obtained from the government and it was driven by one of the teachers who was paid by the parish to drive it. Today our bus fleet numbers 10 in the Westlake area. Those who drive for the high school are Mrs. Bernice Shipp, Mrs. Jane Gaines, Miss Sis Hawkins, Mr. R.D. Franklin, Brother C.D. Miles, Mr. Hardy Ellis, Mr. Doylin Kyle, Mrs. Bob Bowman, Mr. Bill Morgan, and Mr. Kilpatrick. G teat progress was made in 1936 when a new building was added to the WHS campus which boasted an auditor! um with a stage and a narrow balcony around three sides of the auditorium so that it could double as a gymnasium. The spectators at the basketball games stood around this balcony and cheered the Rams to victory. This building is known today as the Red Brick Building. The back and the front views of this structure are shown at the right and at the bottom of this page. In January of 1949 we moved into the present high school building. In 1952 the latest building to be added to our school plant was completed. It was called the Elementary Wing, but a part of it has been taken over by the high school, because of our rapid expansion. This building is shown above. A new elementary building was erected on Sampson Street in 1955 and Mr. W.J. Whiteard, a teacher at WHS, became its first principal. The school is called West- WESTWOOD ELEMENTARY WESTERN HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY wood Elementary and Mr. Whiteard remained its principal until 1959 when a second school was built at 1100 Elizabeth Street called Western Heights Elementary. Mr. Whiteard moved over to the new school and Mr. Marion Benson, a social studies teacher from WHS, became principal at Westwood. At this writing, a new million dollar high school is being erected at the corner of Garden Drive and Guillory Street. It is planned that we shall move into it by the opening of school in August of 1966. w hen the depression came, after the market crash of 1929, many people were hard-pressed to keep their families fed. It soon became apparent that some of the children were going hungry, because they came to school without lunches. Mrs. Harry Shattuck, Mrs. Anna Oliver Barrow, Mrs. Ellen Mims, and Mrs. Dye approached the local grocers (primarily Anderson's Grocery, K M Grocery, and Merle Ravia's Grocery,) and obtained donations of soup bones, stew meat and vegetables which were taken to the home of Mrs. Bailey Coleman who cooked the food into a stew or soup for a fee of $2.50 a week. Mrs. Gus Mack talked Kelly-Weber out of potatoes and onions. Borden’s donated some milk and the Butter Nut Bakery gave bread and this food was served free to those children who had nothing. Mrs. Gus Anderson brought the prepared food from Mrs. Coleman's kitchen to the school and Brother Carpenter, the Baptist preacher, managed for some tables and benches to serve these children on. On Fridays, Mrs. Mack made gingerbread to serve to these children as a treat. All of these people worked at obtaining the food and serving the children with no pay. Eventually the lower south side of the yellow brick building was set aside for preparing the food and serving the students. It was called the soup kitchen. The first stove was a kerosene one, and the workers began to be paid for their services. In 1933 Mantie Goss, Marguerite Gibson, and Thelma Ousley were each paid $1.50 a week. Later in the thirties Mrs. Mabel Carver and Mrs. Wetzel helped with the project. In the fall of 1942 Mrs. T.L. Gilchrist and her sister Mrs. Bickham were hired as managers of the kitchen. They worked for two years and Mrs. Thelma Hawkins took the job as manager at a beginning salary of $3.00 a week in 1944 and worked for fifteen years until her retirement in 1958. Mrs. Vera Barrentine joined Mrs. Hawkins' work force in 1950 and became manager upon Mrs. Hawkins' retirement. We're happy to report that Mrs. Barrentine is still with us in a modern kitchen and a beautiful dining room. T he oldest PTA in Calcasieu Parish is boasted by Westlake High School. The organizational meeting was held in the old frame Baptist church, because it had a bigger area in which to meet. There was no auditorium in the old school building when this PTA unit was organized in 1909. Mrs. Gandy was elected the first president. In later years the PTA became inactive for a few years, but was reorganized in 1922 when Mrs. T.S. Megason was elected president. She served for several terms. Others who have served as president of the organization are: Mrs. Mabel Carver, Mrs. William Ripley, Mrs. T.S. Miller, Mrs. Lynn Owens, Mrs. Herman Fleming, Mrs. Helen Rue, Mrs. L.A. A delicious meal was served and topped off with the thrill of seeing the boys receive their awards. At left is J. C. Picard -best back, Ricky Broussard - highest scholastic average, Henry O'Kelley - best lineman and James Cragar -player with the most desire to win. Charles Benoit took the honors as best trackman of the year and Tommy Fletcher copped the best fieldman trophy. Winning the award for best sportsmanship was Skippy Chisholm, best defensive player in basketball was taken by Jimmy Anderson and Butch Greenslade took the best offensive trophy. BANQUET 1965 The Junior High boys winning awards in sports were Bobby Walsh, Wayne Miller and Glynn Trouille who are shown in the picture at the right. J. C. Picard and Tommy Fletcher were double winners in the field of sports. Picard not only won for best back, but also as the most valuable player. Fletcher added to his best fieldman trophy the honor of best all-around athlete. Kernie Briscoe won the athletic award from Western Heights and Mike Walsh took the honor for Westwood Elementary School. MARY MARGARET CARVER JUNIOR HIGH CHORAL BANQUET Springtime brings with it many fun events, but none is more outstanding than the banquet held for the chorus students. This year it was in the McNeese Room at the Ramada Inn and was sponsored by the Choral Boosters Club. Mary Margaret Carver was crowned Junior Miss Melody of 1965. Below she is shown after receiving the crown and bouquet. Below is Susie Johnston who was first runner-up in the Miss Melody competition. The girls were chosen by popular vote of the chorus members. SUSIE JOHNSTON Mrs. J. B. Johnson, co-president of the Choral Boosters Club pins the orchid corsage on Mrs. Phillip Chapman, the director of the chorus. 28 Co-president of the club with Mrs. J. B. JOHN MILTON LE TARD PRINCIPAL PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE: This 75th Anniversary Edition of the Ram-Ler is in keeping with the highest standards of accomplishment for which we are all striving. It should serve as an inspiration to aspirants in journalism as well as being a priceless keepsake. The many pictures which help to tell the story of the development of WHS date back to 1891 and will be treasured in future years more than they are at the present moment. Never again will such a collection of past events be obtainable. As you hurriedly look through the Ram-Ler today, I'm sure you will be thrilled by the memories the pictures recall. When you give it a more leisurely study, you will agree that this Diamond Anniversary Edition is the finest Ram-Ler yet. Sincerely, 9 . John M. LeTard 34 MRS. PEA RLE S. Ten lovely and telented young ladies entered the competition and were interviewed at a beautiful tea held in the home of Mrs. Wm. J. Smith. Sally Creasy Sahndra Bennett WESTLAKE PAGEANT 1965 The day filled with entertainment for all ages, including a band concert and a parade the likes of which Westlake had never seen before. Dr. Melvin Eastman is to be complimented on his terrific organizing. The evening was climaxed by the most colorful part of all - the pageant. Judges for the event were Mr. and Mrs. Claude Morgan of Alexandria and Mayor Hayes of Port Arthur. A capacity crowd watched and cheered as the young ladies performed their talents. All seemed delighted with their choices. The style show which preceded the pageant was top notch in beauty and performance. The uniforms were military jackets of white gabardine with maroon gabardine skirts. The white overseas caps were piped in maroon, and the service stripes were maroon and white. The first sponsor and organizer of the group was Mrs. Minnie Watley. an English teacher at WHS. Miss Christine Saloom took over about 1946 and Mrs. Flossie Perkins was very active in its work. The first officers in the marching group were: M ay Day and the May Day queen and court began in 1935 as a way of raising money for the school. Several girls were nominated and at one penny a vote, one of them was chosen as queen. The very first queen was Shirley Carver and the king was Bue-nice Boyett. Miss Vera Gillson, the first grade teacher, was in charge of the event, and put on a beautiful ceremony each year. The May Day ceremonies held sway until football was introduced at Westlake High and then the homecoming activities assumed this posifion of importance. The May Day queens are: 1935 - Shirley Carver - Mrs. Frank Boudreaux 1936 - Eloise Luts - Mrs. Cecil McBride 1937 - Cyleen Carver - Mrs. F.L. Larue, Jr. 1938 - Iva Marie Pumpelly - Mrs. C.W. The top King: Alvin Benoit beauty that year was Joy Ray Blume, who was called The Belle. She was chosen Queen: Iva Marie Pumpelly by John Robert Powers. In 1947 the title of the annual was changed to THE RAM-LER, and was dedicated to Mrs. L.V. Manning who was also its sponsor. The sponsorship of the Ram-Ler passed through many hands in the years that followed until Maurice A. Burns took it over in 1959. Carolyn Geheb was the editor and Mrs. Martha Crick assumed the responsibility of handling the money. In this edition the WHO'S WHO IN ACADEMICS became an integral part of the yearbook, Annette Blanchard was top beauty and Rodney Martin was top beau. Rodney was alsostudent body president that year. Something new was added to the Ram-Ler in 1964 when the staff picked its first sweetheart. She was Charlene Henry. The 1965 sweetheart was Dana Fisher and this year's choice is Susie Core. 118 L a Grange and Sulphur were the only schools in the area to boast a band, other than Lake Charles High, in 1950. The Calcasieu Parish School Board began a program of music expansion in that year and tlie smaller schools of Vinton, Marion, Iowa and Westlake began to be filled with the first sounds of a band being born. Our first band director was Mr. John L. Babb, a former student at WHS and a graduate of 43. Mr. Babb attended McNeese and matriculated to LSU where he received his degree in 1950. The first uniforms of the Ram Band were white sailor britches, white shirts, and a black tie. The first drum major was Alice Adams Fanta, and she led the band through its paces in parades and at football games. Mr. John Wiley Brewer, a graduate of De Ridder High School in 1948, and of McNeese in 1954, joined the WHS faculty as band director in the fall of 1954. There were approximately 45 members in the band when Mr. Brewer first started, but with the years the Ram Band has grown and at present its members number 92. Since the inception of the Sweepstakes Award, which is given for superior ratings in marching, stage performance, and sight reading, the Ram Band has monopolized the honor by stacking up 14 superiors and 12 excellents, to take the trophy in 1959 and again in 1962, the only two years the trophy has been won in Calcasieu Parish. A tip of the Ram-Ler hat to Mr. John Brewer and the Ram Band. One amusing aspect of all this is the fact that Mr. Babb was also the director of music at Vinton High School and when Westlake and Vinton played each other in football, Mr. Babb would conduct one quarter on the Westlake side and then one quarter on the Vinton side. This phenomena occurred twice in that year because Westlake and Vinton played each other twice with Vinton winning the first game and West-lake taking the second one. By 1953 the citizens of Westlake had grown quite proud of the fact that they had a band, so they got together and passed a bond issue to buy uniforms more befitting such a fine group of youngsters. MR. JOHN L. BABB AND DRUM MAJOR ALICE ADAMS MR. JOHN W. BREWER AND THE 1965-66 DRUM MAJOR SHIRLEY BOWMAN DUDLEY DIXON IN THE FIRST BAND UNIFORM OF THE '40'S 'Phe advent of football in 1946, brought a new activity to WHS--HOMECOMING. At left is a scene that just about describes the whole game. There was plenty of defensive action by both teams and the crowd was kept cheering from the edges of their seats. In the small picture at right is Mike Laurence for a 48 yard touchdown in the game with De Ridder. Below, two De Ridder Dragons give Tommy Fletcher a rough time in his attempt at more yardage. David Van Winkle comes in to help. At the half the game was in the Ram's favor but the dragons came back to win 19 to 13. At left and below are two scenes from our second win of the season. The Rams beat Oakdale 13 to 0. Tommy Arabie and George Hollis lead in the blocking. At center of pages, Val Widcamp stops one of the Landry tigers in the close game with an old rival. At left Steve Myers picks up yardage going around right end. Below, Tommy Fletcher makes a 68 yard run for a touchdown. Mike Greenslade assists his team mate in bringing down another tiger as the Rams come out with their fourth victory of the season with the 7 to 0 victory over Landry. We were unable to get any pictures of the Jennings game, but thought we should note the results. It was a 21 to 9 loss for the Rams. 145 We recognize Norman Areno as one of the Rams taking out this tiger, but we don't know who the other player is. At bottom of the left page is a scene from the Eunice game. Val Widcamp goes around right end as David Van Winkle follows. At right James Duhon gets off a pass as a bob-cat come up from behind. The final score was Eunice 7 - Westlake 0. At the bottom of this page is a scence from the last game of the season. The Rams beat the Marion Chargers 20 - 0. In the picture is David Van Winkle kicking one of the extra points. Pootball was begun at WHS in the fall of 1946. FHA TALENT SHOW One of the biggest events before Christmas is the annual FHA Talent Show. Everybody with any talent gets an opportunity to perform before the public and a panel of judges picks the winners. At right is the first place winner in High School. A musical group which calls itself The Avantis , composed of Howard Elliott. Gary Darnsteadt, Shirley Bowman. Harley Dupuis, and Greg El-lion. Second place winner in High School was Sandy Bennett with her rendition of the reading, The Spun Glass Ship. Below is Carlyn Dupin who took third place with her singing of The Girl From Impenema. At bottom right is Judy Fuselier who took third place with her acrobatic dance number.
