THE 1964 Photograph courtesy of Bill Gabbert. RAM-LER Westlake High School Westlake, Louisiana Volume XIX Dedication The 1964 Ram-ler is proudly dedicated to the top beauty of the high school faculty. She graduated from Southwestern in 1952, taught at the Pineville High School for one year and after her marriage moved to Westlake. This year completes her eighth year with us. She has been invaluable to the Ram-ler Staff in helping with the subscriptions. Some of her many other activities are keeping six study halls, processing new books, making the book inventory, keeping a record of checked out and overdue books, aiding seniors in research, acting as full time audiovisual director, and preparing book orders for the elementary, junior and senior high schools. Even with all these duties she is usually found smiling and is regarded with fond affection by all of us. For these reasons we proudly dedicate this edition of the Ram-ler to Mrs. Martha Crick. MRS. MARTHA CRICK Guidance Services: I can't decide what I want to be, ” is a familiar cry Mrs. Pearle Hebert hears every day. Mrs. Hebert is a graduate of Northwestern and has done a marvelous job of testing and counseling for the past four years. MRS. PEARLE HEBERT Secretarial Services: There's always the paper work to be done and Miss Barbara McGuire does a terrific job in this department. For the past twelve years Miss McGuire has kept this work from piling up. MISS BARBARA McGUIRE The Spring Rally of 1963 brought immense pleasure to both the students and faculty members. Thirty-one contestants were entered, thirty placed. Twenty of these were firsts. Nine second places and one third completed the count for an all out victory. Shown above are Elaine Ebarb, Norma Briscoe, Carolyn Lowery, Larry Hoben, Rodger Phelps and Roy Dowden admiring the sweepstakes trophy. On this and the following pages are shown those who helped to bring it home. Literary Rally gave us a first place, Play-Day a first place. Speech Rally a second place, Music Festival a second place and the Track Team gave us a fourth. These honors made West-lake High number one in the district and awarded us the sweepstakes trophy. Below is shown the track team. BACK ROW: Roger Phelps, Sidney Ingles, J. C. Picard, Jim Daigle, Tommy Fletcher, Rod Creel. Tommy Ellender, Ronald Hoover, Mike Hollis, Jimmy Cureton, Eugene Byrd. The scene was beautifully decorated with gold-dusted musical instruments. Shown at left are Diana Foster and Jimmy Post. The slower numbers drew more people to the floor as evidenced in the picture below. Senior om 63 The music for this occasion was furnished by The Rhythm Dukes from Northwestern. Their repetoire was varied and everyone said it was the best band we ever had. Sponsors for this Junior function were Mr. Maurice Bums, Miss Patsy Sanders, Mr. Mike Beard, Mrs. Lajuanta Farley, Mrs. Jeanne Dunn, and Miss Edie Storer. Diana Nunez and Ann Laurence served as co-hostesses to the Seniors. Tim Harrison receives a cup of punch from each. Everybody relaxes after knocking themselves out after a fast twist number. . . . and the band too. Even the faculty gets into the act. In Memoriam Kathy Mitchell July 23, 1947 - March 19. 1964 The bright eyes and cheerful face of Kathy Mitchell will long be remembered by those of us who went to school with her and loved her. In her freshman year Kathy joined the Pep Club and served as cheerleader during her sophomore and junior years. She was also cheerleader during her two junior high years. Active in speech, she took a rating of excellent at the Speech Festival in 1963 with her excerpt from Evangeline. In 1964 she earned a “superior” rating for her interpretive reading of Death of Anon. Always pretty and pleasant, Kathy was selected as a beauty in junior high and during her freshman and sophomore years. Few can leave behind a memory so cheerful and bright and so filled with happy thoughts. In Memoriam Rose Guidry September 30, 1949 - January 23, 1964 We were all saddened early this year when Rose Marie Guidry died late in January of burns received earlier in the month. She was a sweet child with a quiet manner and a ready smile. She will long be missed by her teachers and classmates who knew and loved her. In Memoriam RICKY TUNKS October 13, 1949 - April 14, 1964 A third tragedy struck our student body when cancer took Ricky Tunks from us. He was a freshman who was appreciated for his winning smile and excellent character. His warm personality will long be remembered by those of us fortunate enough to have known him. FACULTY MR. The first touchdown of the year for the Rams as they score in the first game of the year against Hackberry. It was rough going in the intense heat, but we came out victorious with a final score of WESTLAKE - 22, HACKBERRY -0. Isn’t that a nice way to get the season started off? Le Bouef checks with the coach on what the next play should be. The victorious Rams are escorted off the field by some of the co-eds after the tilt with the Hackberry Mustangs. The rams maintain possession in a full team pile up in the match between South Cameron and Westlake. It's anybody's ball as the South Cameron Tarpons wrestle the Westlake Rams for possession. Don’t just stand there. J. C., cover it! FINAL SCORE: Westlake - 7 South Cameron - 14 LeBouef drops back to pass as Westlake loses a rough one to Leesville. Final Score: Leesville - 34, Westlake - 7. Below: It's another heartbreaker as the hard driving Rams lose another one 28 to 14 against DeRidder. In the next picture, J. C. picks up 6 yards in the drive for the second touchdown. At Bottom, the backfield gives plenty of protection. Above: The cheerleaders form an honor guard as the Rams charge onto the field for the homecoming game with Vinton. Tommy Goleman is coming through the hoop. Dalton Langford, 22, has just taken a pass from Quarterback Le Bouef and heads for the goal. Coming up to assist on the play Is 81. Jerry Thornton. The day of homecoming activities was made complete with a walloping win for the Rams. Final Score: Westlake - 41, Vinton - 0. Westlake halfback J. C. Picard is about to be tackled from behind by an unidentified DeQuincy player. Picard was stopped but there was an appreciable yardage gain. A downed Westlake Ram is quickly surrounded by a host of DeQuincy Tigers. Coming up to assist is Eugene Byrd and Henry O'Kelley, but it is too late. The Ram forward line clears the field making a beautiful opening for the ball carrier. It's too bad nobody was able to stop 42 from DeQuincy. The final score in this hard fought game was Westlake - 6, DeQuincy - 27 Left: Quarterback Robert Le Bouef makes a hand-off to fullback Rodger Phelps. Rodger picked short yardage on the muddy, rain soaked Landry field. The rams, although playing on a strange field rambled to a 13 - 0 victory over the Landry Tigers. Below: Westlake quarterback Butch Greenslade fakes a hand-off to fullback Rodger Phelps and scampers around right end for a nice gain against the Tigers. The rams gave a good account of themselves in their victory over the Tigers. Cheerleaders, band and pep squad do their part in livening up the atmosphere at the game. Below: Quarterback Robert Le Bouef prepares to lead interference for halfback J. C. Picard as the Rams rolled to a 26 - 14 victory over the Sam Houston Broncos. ENDS: Johnny Culpepper, Mike Greenslade, Rod Creel, Robert Farrow, Reggie Fleming. i QUARTERBACKS: Robert Le Bouef, Butch Greenslade, James Duhon. HALFBACKS: BACK ROW: Mike Hollis, Carl Anderson and J. C. Picard. FRONT ROW: Dalton Langford, Tommy Fletcher, and Sonny Thornton. At left Robert Farrow goes in for a layup during the Ram-Landry game. Final Score: Westlake - -- - — ----------37 Landry - - — - -- -- -.48 Lower left: Butch Greenslade gets by Rusty Irwin of De Quincy to take two points in the all important district game. Below: Tim Harrison gains possession of the ball on the rebound as Farrow and Butch stand ready to give their assistance. Interesting note: This game was attended by a capacity crowd even with extra chairs moved into the gymnasium. Over 200 cars were turned away at the parking lots because of the inability to provide them with seats. At right Butch Greenslade loses his balance in the District 4-A Championship Game against the De Quincy Tigers as teammate Robert Farrow looks on. Final Score: Westlake - -- -- -- 72 De Quincy — - - - - 57 We're Number One in the district again 1 In the back row below is the varsity team from left to right: Mike Colosky, Rod Creel. Robert Farrow, Butch Greenslade, Tim Harrison and Dalton Langford. In the front row Coach Doucet, Skippy Chisholm, Jimmy Anderson and Coach Benham complete the picture. Bi-District Championship Game At left Dalton Langford gets the rebound away from Basile in the game which made Westlake Number One once again. It was a thriller of a game with the Rams coming out victorious 66-48. Below: Wha Hoppen? says Dalton as Tim Harrison engages in a few football tactics and gets pinned on the bottom of the pile as Butch Greenslade looks on.
